Post subject:  The Triplets Have Another Birthday

Years ago I wrote a rather insane drabble called The Triplets Birthday. (Archived Here)This is not exactly a follow up, but recalling that is the closest I can come to an introduction because I haven't decided how this is going to end yet! It will be much shorter than the original though. Happy Birthday Vikki and Chelsea.

The triplets all got exciting mail on their birthdays. This was not unusual, postmen are used to bringing unusual and exciting mail and the triplets postmen more so than usual. One of them had received fairy cakes in the post not that long ago, and jaffa cakes a while before that. Another regularly received mail from outside the country, from England in all sorts of odd shaped parcels. As for the third, well her postman had declared himself unshockable, so various of her friends were putting this statement to the test. This didn't bother the youngest triplet who had a reputation she wished to live up to.

Three postmen struggled under the loads they carried. Three postmen rang a doorbell (or knocked on the door in the case of the one visiting the eldest triplet.) Three triplets eagerly opened their doors and took bundles and packages off the postmen. Three doors banged shut. Three bundles were examined for clues as to their contents and senders.

The eldest looked around the room. The kitchen had been cleaned already, as the children were eating their breakfast, and the bathroom was passable thanks to lashings of bleach. There was washing on, but there was always washing on. The living room needed hoovering and the dining room....well the curtain at the archway could always be pulled to cover the mess in the dining room. She believed in the existence of the floor in the dining room, but this was a matter of faith. She just thanked her lucky stars that Matey would never see it. There was no way she could live up to Chalet School standards now, not in the real world. Stepping over the children's toys and smiling as she caught sight of a photograph of them, she grabbed some milky coffee and sat down to open the post.

The middle triplet was wearing a woolly hat and a pair of gloves. She wasn't sure why, but then again she often did things without being exactly sure why. Like dancing in the middle of the street or climbing trees. Those who didn't know her very well would often say she was dreamy. Those who knew her thought otherwise. The middle triplet was unique. She did what seemed to be a good idea at the time. Today it was a good idea to be wearing a woolly hat and gloves, so she did. Considering the noises coming from one of her parcels it was in actuality a sensible precaution. She started very gingerly to open her post.

The youngest grinned at her postman, he was looking slightly embarrassed, but determinedly met her eye and wished her a Happy Birthday.
'Almost got him.' she thought and wondered what had been included in today's post to get the best reaction yet. The possibilities that crossed her mind made her hide under a chair for a moment, then she realised that she couldn't open her post under there and she could smell chocolate. She climbed up onto the chair and stroked the post, took a couple of dozen photographs of it and began to open her birthday post.

Intermission

Three parcels oozed.

Three parcels ticked and squeaked.

Three parcels were wrapped in brown paper.

In three separate locations men in black suits dashed in through the window, grabbed the ticking, squeaking parcel and carried it away before flashing a light in the triplets eyes.

Three triplets shook their heads, laughed and wondered how often they could get the men to do that before they twigged it was a set up.

The eldest triplet opened the official mail first and put aside the bills, they could be dealt with at some unspecified later date. They slid off the pile and got buried under numerous school newsletters. Then she turned to the junk mail. No, she didn't want a loan. No she didn't want to learn criminology at home, she had learned enough about that at school. No, she didn't want to donate to save the lesser-spotted tree hugger. No, she didn't want to read about the community policing or the green and labours attempts to win her vote at the upcoming local elections. (these being the only parties that bothered to canvass locally) She sighed, glancing on-line she also cleared her junk mail there as well. No, she didn't want to extend an body part she didn't actually posses. No she didn't want to buy various chemicals and pharmaceuticals on-line at cheap prices. No, she didn't want to give her bank details to various Africans and Easter Europeans. DELETE, DELETE, DELETE, just like the cybermen. Then she turned to the proper mail.

Her twitching nose had already smelled the chocolate. She knew it would be there. Birthdays always brought chocolate, but this year she was amazed at just how much. Chocolate, money, chocolate, craft stuff, chocolate, ER dvd, chocolate and a bit more chocolate. She smiled. Books would have been nice, but the money and chocolate would deal with that. Chocolate would deal with anything, even holes in the knitting and broken knitting needles. She missed the small formal looking letter, it lay on the mat.

The middle triplet also smelt chocolate. Unfortunately that was what was oozing. Chocolate sauce had not made it through customs and the package had been well and truly mangled before it reached her. The chocolate sauce covered model of the Swallow now resembled the results of the eldest siblings knitting, well it would have done if said knitting was covered in chocolate sauce which was ten allowed to drip off. 'Oh well,' thought the middle triplet, it will come in handy for feeding the moose at least. Dancing through the house she dropped the package straight into the moose pen. Then she settled down to look at the rest of her post. Running shoes, books, and lots of knitwear along with one or two odder items that had come from various 'friends' in the uk. A lime green sledge was the strangest of these, but the trilingual version of monopoly based around Switzerland run it a close second. The postman had a small envelope for her as well, but didn't realise until he got back to base and found it in his van, but being a very nice man, a very, very nice man, he made an extra trip and delivered it seperately on his way home.

The youngest triplet saw her small envelope first, but thought it looked boring so she dropped it onto her bed underneath the hair brush, teddies, blanket, teddies, shoes, teddies, parachutes, teddies, books, teddies and cute pj's. The other packages looked interesting. The one which had made the postman blush was from a plastic surgery clinic. The youngest triplet frowned and opened the envelope which promised all sorts of intimate surgery on it's cover. She read the letter within with a frown. She knew they were testing out the postman, but some of her friends had rather an 'interesting' sense of humour. This particular letter informed her that an annonymouse (spelled like that on purpose) friend had paid for her to have surgery to implant 6 Brests. The letter went on to inform her that not only was this misspelled but was also inadvisable as the weight of the silicone would be too great for her height, although if she actually wanted the surgery they could also increase her height to 5'9 to enable her to cope. She carefully put this letter where she would find it again and turned to the rest of her birthday post. A 183rd full set of CS books, a few teddies and some camera accessories and some chocolate. She stroked the books for a few hours and then turned back to the letter about plastic surgery. Her face under the hair was grim. She didn't know who had booked the surgery, but when she found out they would have an appointment with her bookend. She knew what a well aimed bookend could do.

It was evening before any of the triplets opened their letters. When they did their shouts caused minor earthquakes across the world and what they posted on the CBB caused such a flurry of posts that they broke the board.

Liss cursed them all soundly as she was dragged out of bed by the phone. She had looked at the date and knew she should have expected this, she still hadn't forgotten the London Marathon of 2004. She went to the computer via the kitchen where she baked some rather delicious cake (priorities in the right place) and whilst telling Katie what they had done to her board now, she fixed it once more.

Liz was sure it was toothpaste in the envelopes, Auntie Pat thought it was an invitation to a CS reunion and wanted to know why she hadn't got one, having been a founding member. Kate thought it may be Matey and was already trembling in alternate relief that she didn't have an envelope and fear she may still receive one. Auntie Pat had a second guess and wondered if it was proof that Lesley had really killed Hilda in the original RCS. Kate had the follow up idea that maybe the envelopes con tained small cardboard cut-outs of the Lime Green Woman with a handy string that meant they could be used as air-fresheners in cars.

None of them were right.

In case you hadn't guessed, this is being posted as I write it!!

Author's note: I suppose at some point I should decide what was in the envelopes shouldn't I. Or should I finish this without telling you? Lets see how this bit goes.

Once the board was back up the triplets were left to discuss their plans. They wondered who would be involved. They wondered if someone had set them up. They wondered how many photographs they could take and whether the chocolate ration would hold out. They also discussed how to get rid of the toothpaste stains. The oldest triplet was interrupted a number of times by knots in neckers, children's itchy feet and chocolate breaks, the middle one had to leave part way though the conversation to put a torque on a moose. The youngest took some random photographs while she waited. And she looked suspiciously at the postmarks on the small, official envelopes.

I did wear mittens and a toque today! It is unseasonably cold here (though likely we did escape the snow).

Those sound like lovely presents - I am at a conference today and tomorrow (luckily in Toronto) so my gifts are waiting until later.

Maybe the Squeen is sending the toothpaste in the envelopes instead of the 100 birthday telegram. Maybe she thought toothpaste would be more useful in enabling them to keep their remaining teeth.
*thinks this is quite a brainwave* Why hasn't someone pointed this out at Buckingham Palace? It's so obvious!

The triplets had been worried when they saw the contents of their envelopes, they refused to be frightened, but it was scary. They knew it wasn't the witchy one, this wasn't quite her style. It was lime green, but they didn't think it was The Lime Green Woman, after all she had never been away. The youngest triplet thought she had spotted a clue. The stamp was peeling off and underneath it was a doodle of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup, executed in lime green and gold pen. When the elder two returned they hurriedly checked their own stamps, and found a similar drawing underneath each of them. The middle triplet could make nothing of the postmark on hers, it being covered in a unique mixture of chocolate sauce and toothpaste, but the eldest triplet could make out some odd letters in hers, a B then later a LF and finally a ST. They put two and two together and not being totally lacking came up with 4, or as an alternative 22, or 0, any are good. Then leaving the maths aside turned back to the small lime green cards that had fallen out of the postcard sized envelopes. They had said merely 'I'm back' and for some odd reason had been covered in toothpaste. They finally knew now who it must refer to, what they were uncertain of, and still are, was this.

Was it a threat or a promise?

The toothpaste was because I asked a group on msn what could be in the envelope and Liz suggested toothpaste, it was such an off the wall suggestion that I had to use it. Their other ideas were mentioned somewhere.

None of them suggested Lisa T! That was my idea after exchanging PM's with her...but she didn't know.

Now I have a question.

Lisa, Why toothpaste?

You're better asking the person who came up with it. Ummmm.... ... Query: is it loose toothpaste, or tubes?

Author:  Carolyn P [ Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:42 am ]

It must be loose toothpaste because it got all over everything, so even if it didn't start that way it was delivered loose.
