The morning ramble

“Yoo-Hoo”

“We ought to sing it”
“Go on then”
“You first”

The clear voices, many off key or flat, or simply too out of breath to sing all piped up,
“Where hast that bin since ah saw thee
Where hast that bin since ah saw thee (without thi trousers on)
On Ilkley moor ba’tat
On Ilkley moor ba’tat
On Ilkley moor ba’tat (where the ducks play footaball)”

There being no ducks in sight to terrorise the girls ran swiftly over the heather. The wind blowing through their hair, because they had, of course, left off their hats as was traditional on this particular walk. They had climbed up the very steep hill with some varied degree of skill. They each remembered to bend their knees, but that didn’t help you breath, and for some of them it didn’t even help stop their knees from going rather wobbly.

“The hills are alive…” sang one as she swirled around.

Another paddled through a cold stream. Fortunately she had removed her shoes earlier in the ramble, finding that they hampered her enjoyment of the moors.

A few took photos. This was a good way to get a rest without having to say that you wanted one, after all it took time to focus and hold a camera steady in the wind.

A famous five moment was enjoyed when the qualities of heather as a mattress were explored. Prickly and lumpy was the consensus, although two or three of them did wonder out loud if they should try it out overnight. This was giggled over but quickly ruled against by the more staid members of the group.

They finally reached the rocks that were their destination and stood, enjoying the views and resisting all temptation to quote psalms about help and hills. Eventually they laid down across the top of the rocks, peering out over the precipiece.

“It’s a long way down” muttered the one with the plaits.
“I could touch your hair now and you couldn’t kill me” added another one, looking at her intently.
“Don’t be too sure,” grinned a third.

That was really all the encouragement they needed and soon about half a dozen of them were dangling over the edge, holding on with various body parts, and still without their hats. This made for some good photo opportunities and several people stood at the bottom of the cliff, craning their heads upwards. There was a manic laugh.
An almost evil laugh.
A laugh from a person who was obviously enjoying herself.

Or about to.

You could believe there was an ominous silence. There would have been if the earth had responded to the events that were about to unfold.

Auntie stood on the top of the precipice and slowly walked along looking down at the people hanging.

“You really should be more careful” she said as she stepped very carefully onto their fingers. “Leaving things lying around only leads to accidents”

There was an “Argh”, followed by a splat.

Soon each hanging person had fallen to their doom, landing on the unfortunate photographers below.

The remaining member of the party walked slowly down to the bottom of the cliff. She looked at the rather messy results of her stroll on the moor.
“Mmmmmm”

A short while later, in a hillside hut, a bell was rung, very loudly.
A young baby cried, took a look at Auntie standing there and very quickly stopped, her unfreckled lower lip trembling.

“Anyone for strawberry jam?” asked Auntie.
