It was nearly finished, the sink sat gleaming in the new worktop, next to it the shiny new dog shower, the kennel runs, still silver stood empty, waiting for the door and window to be knocked in the wall before the dogs could use the kennels.

Louise looked round with satisfaction, she had worked hard all weekend at this, just the last few bits to take down the drive to the skip should see it finished as far as was possible.

Slowly, she started to clear the last few things, when at last she came to a box she didn’t remember seeing before. Turning it round she groaned.

“Another one Kate must have packed! No label.”

Stomping into the house she slammed the box down on the kitchen side.

“Now what,” Kate turned from the cooker and her face drained of colour.

“I assume this is yours?” Louise snapped pointing at the box.

“I erm, yes, well, possibly,” Kate replied, trying to sound evasive and unsure.

“What’s in it?” Louise started to undo the tape.

“No!!!” Kate gasped, pulling the box from the side into her chest, “what ever you don’t open it.”

“Oh come on,” Louise raised her eyebrows as she spoke, she reached forward a tried to pull the box away.

“No really, please, don’t open it.” As they pushed and pulled the box splits began to show in the side. Suddenly both clearly heard something from the box, a kind of yawning, followed by a strange brushing sound, like whiskers being groomed.

Looking down at the box their expressions couldn’t have been more different, Kate, with eyes wide, horror etched across her face and Louise, startled and perplexed but still curious. They both looked further down, around their feet rent a mob stood in a circle, six pairs of eyes resolutely fixed on the box.

“Kate, what is in there” Louise said as Kate desperately tried to keep the box closed.

“Bunnies,” Kate whispered.

“What?”

“Bunnies, you know, Rupert, Esmerelda, the little one with no name. I packed them before we went on holiday.”

“What? Hang on, we don’t have any rabbits!”

“You don’t, no, but then you have always made it plain you only write reports and documents.”

“So,” Louise shook her head, “what do these rabbits have to do with you, or the fact i only write reports, are they real rabbits, no, they can’t be, stuffed rabbits, we can just put them with the rest of the soft toys.”

“They’re not toys they’re, well, plot bunnies, you know, when I used to disappear off to the computer for hours no end and stay up late and stuff, they are why.” Grammar had clearly deserted Kate along with the last remaining shred of hope as Louise pulled at the tape again.

“No please,” Kate begged, “we aren’t ready yet, when the house is more organised, when we’ve got more time, after Christmas maybe.” Hope lit in Kate’s eyes.

“You can’t leave bunnies in a box till after Christmas!” Louise said crossly.

“Nooo, well, I suppose.”

“What about one of your other school girl book club friends won’t they look after them for you?”

“They might,” Kate replied evasively thinking that if Louise sent them to one of the other CBB’ers Kate would never be welcome on line again.

“I know,” said Louise taking the box firmly out of Kate’s hand and carrying over to the table.

Kate watched as she picked up a marker pen and started writing. She watched her finish writing and pick up the box.

“I’ll drop this down the post office now, then you won’t have to worry, you can ask for them back after Christmas.”

“Er, where are you sending them?” Kate said anxiously, whilst she didn’t need them right now she did want them back, and some CBB’ers weren’t known to take too much care of their bunnies.

“Oh, the only address I could find in your address book,” she stared down at the parcel, “I am sure Rachel the Witch isn’t her proper name, but I am sure it will get there ok.”

With that she turned and raced out the door leaving Kate staring after her, wondering whether she would ever see her bunnies, alive, dead or strangely altered again.

They do have to get there . . .perhaps they will gnaw their way out of the box en route and wreak havoc on a world that is simply Not Ready. Laughing

Rabbit Pie is traditionally served on Christmas Eve, but is a hearty dish on any autumn night.

Ingredients
4 pr. rabbits (dressed/skinned and cleaned)
2 pounds beef (stew beef/round steak), cubed
2 pounds pork (steak/chops), cubed
salt and pepper
8 cups flour
1/2 pound lard or shortening

Wash and quarter rabbits, cover with water, and cook until tender. Brown beef and pork while rabbit is cooking. Remove rabbit from pot, saving the water. Remove bones and combine beef and pork into same pot. Season to taste with salt and pepper and continue cooking slowly for 2 to 3 hours, or until meat is extra tender. Pour off 2 cups (more if needed) of juice and allow to cool (just long enough to comfortably handle) to make the crust for the meat pie. Combine in large bowl 8 cups flour, salt and 1/2 pound lard/shortening; cut into flour thoroughly. Make well/hole in center, adding juice and mixing after each addition until dough leaves sides of bowl; turn onto floured surface and roll out, adding flour each turn to prevent sticking. Line bottom of desired size pans and ladle meat mixture in along with juice. Roll out top for pie, cutting designs to allow moisture to escape. Press edges together and walk a fork around to create a design and ensure seal. Bake in 350-degree oven or until crust is golden brown.

To serve: steam in colander/double boiler until heated thoroughly; sweetened black tea is the traditional beverage served with this delicious meat pie.

That is a very meaty pie.

I prefer rabbit with carrots, muchrooms, onions and a rich red wine gravy.
