Post subject:  The Gather: or wishful thinking

Joey Bettany sat on the fence near the Chalet School, whistling like a blackbird. School would start in a few days, but she would not be there. She had left school. Much to her regret, and was only here now to help with preparations for the new term. As she sat looking out over the blue lake, something extraordinary happened. A car suddenly appeared on the road, but like no car she had ever seen before. It stooped on the side of the road and two women got out and looked around in a bemused way. As Jo watched another car appeared, closely followed by another - all the same odd shape. All the women in the cars gathered together talking, and as Jo moved over to greet them she heard what they were saying.
“It looks like the Achensee, but it isn’t. I was there only a couple of weeks ago. This is subtly different, smaller. And this fence shouldn’t be there.” And the woman pointed to the fence around the school. “That’s where the Alpenhof should be!”
They ran over to look over the gate.
“It’s a group of chalets, and there’s a statue over the door of the big one,” said the first woman. “It couldn’t be, could it?”
At that point Jo reached them. “Hello,” she said. “I’m Jo Bettany, and that’s the Chalet School.”
There was a chorus of gasps at this, but before anyone could say anything another car pulled up behind the others. This looked as if it had been stuffed as full as it was possible for a car to get. Boxes and bags filled the back to the roof, and Jo could swear she could see the sides bulging. Another woman got out, short, with long hair that flew around her face, which amazed Jo for she was clearly old enough to have put it up.
“Vikki! Come here. This is Jo Bettany, and this... is the Chalet School!”
For once Jo found that she couldn’t get a word in edgeways. She stood feeling like a landed cod as the women all exclaimed and commented. Two things stood out clearly; they had been going to somewhere in England and had no idea how they had got here, and they though that the Chalet School was fictional. More cars appeared, and then a group of women who had obviously come up by train came hurryi9ng round the lake. The noise sounded to Jo like a group of Middles meeting again at the beginning of term.
“Excuse me,” she said, raising her voice. “What are you going to do?”
“We do need to make a decision,” said one of the later arrivals.
“What do you think Lesley? Should we try and find somewhere here?” asked the woman with the long hair.
“We can’t stay out here all night, or sleep in the cars can we?” replied Lesley. “And there’s no room in yours for that anyway Vikki.”
There was an outbreak of laughter, and comments about a ‘Tardis’, but then the group fell silent.
“I say,” said Jo, “You could use the school you know. It’s all ready, and the girls won’t be back till Monday. You’re just here for the weekend aren’t you?”
“That would be great,” said Dawn, who Jo found was the first to arrive. “We’d clear up after ourselves too.”
Jo led the way into the school, and grinned at the exclamations that came from the women. Really, she thought, Middles was an accurate description of them! They settled into the dormitories in the main house, and Jo showed them the kitchen and classrooms, before returning to the Sonnalpe, utterly bemused and wondering exactly where all the strange women had come from. They seemed reliable however, and she was quite happy about leaving them the run of the school.
After the odd beginning, the weekend went as planned. When they departed on Sunday, they found to their relief that they could reverse their journey’s with no trouble, cars disappearing as they had come, and the train travellers finding themselves on the right train home. And when the Gather diary was posted on the CBB, no one believed them, quite naturally, but they all agreed that it was the best Gather ever.
