See Frogize's "Oh Mother!" in COT for the reason behind this. The account given in Exploits of the lesson was merely a cover-up: this is what really happened...

In a secluded corner of the Art room, Joey paused in her rubbings-out. It had suddenly struck her that this man was not, after all, some kind of god. And anyway, she'd never been any good at Art. After all, how would being able to draw a vase of flowers help her in her ambition to become the best-loved Chaletian ever? She set her pencil down.
“Herr Laubach,” she began formally, “it is over.”
“Vot?” The gruff Austrian looked round from contemplation of the mountains.
“It is over. What we had –”
“Vot?! You cannot be serious! After all zis time – Jo – ah, Miss Bettany – vot vill I do?”
“You can’t have expected it to last forever,” she pointed out. “After all, you’re thirty years older than me.”
“But – but – but zat was never a problem before! I vill not accept zis!”
“Look, why don’t we speak in German? Mine’s better than your English. Besides, then only Frieda and Marie will understand properly, and they know everything anyway.”
“Everything?” The infuriated man swapped to his native language. “You mean –”
“Oh yes, they’ve known since the beginning,” she assured him cheerfully.
“And you have told your friends about all our secret assignations?”
“Who do you think distracted Miss Leslie so I could sneak out of Maths?”
“And our trip to Innsbruck?”
“Certainly – in fact, Marie was quite keen to join us until Bill snaffled her for an extra Science coaching.”
“And –” he gulped, “and the mountain hut last Friday?”
“Yes, even that.”
Herr Laubach’s scream of – rage? Indignation? Heartbreak? Who could tell? – could be heard throughout the school. He gathered up Joey’s art equipment and flung it at her head.
“Out! Out, I say!”

Ignoring the shocked gasps of her friends, Jo sedately left the Art room. She had just spotted that new young doctor from the Sanatorium out on his morning stroll.
