The first of the new stories my bunny has been telling me over the last few weeks. Hopefully if I get it written and posted she will tell me what's happening in my other drabbles!

"When do the first of the new girls arrive?" Rosalie Dene asked, looking anxiously at a piece of paper in her hand. "And where do we fit them in?"

"They should arrive about tea time today." the Head replied. "I know it's a day early, but Mrs. Walker has to get to the south coast to see her husband, and she was bringing the luggage, so she suggested that the girls should come too. And since Bride and co are here already, I agreed."

"Did Mollie say why they were coming today?" Rosalie asked.

"She and Dick are getting the house decorated, so she sent her girls, Tom and Rosalie back a day early so that they wouldn't be in the way." Hilda explained. "The new girls are coming by boat, apparently. Mrs. Walker said that they only agreed to come if they could bring their sailing boat with them. They are all very experienced sailors, so I agreed. And as for where we put them, I've put six beds into that little dorm on the top floor that we didn't use before. They are all to go together, all three mothers have asked me."

"I see." the school secretary replied, making a note. "So we have Ruth and Margaret Blackett, Susan and Mavis Walker, and Dorothea Callum. You don't have a dormitory prefect in there."

"Tom Gay will be in there too." Miss Annersley replied. "I don't think she'll mind, and from what Mrs. Blackett told me she and Ruth should get on very well. They seem to be a similar type of girl." Rosalie nodded her agreement, and began to fill in the names on the dormitory lists.

I wonder how long Ruth will be called Ruth? And is Titty's name really Mavis?

(I take it we're at St Briavels now?)

Thanks for all your comments. The discussion about Titty/Mavis is in Inspire and Challenge called "A Question (well, two)". This is nearly all written, and I just have to post it, so here's the next bit.

Meanwhile, the three Bettany girls, with Tom Gay and Rosalie Way, were on the small ferry crossing from Carnbach. They were standing on deck, looking towards the island, when they heard a faint shout.

"Ferry to port!" followed by another voice calling,

"Ready about!" They looked around, and saw a small sailing boat full of girls come flying up the channel.

"Tourists." said Bride, disgustedly, as the boat came near the ferry.

"Where will we land, Captain?" asked the girl who was steering.

"We'll head into that cove,” replied the biggest girl, wrestling with a rope.

"Cheek!" Tom exclaimed. "They'll go and spoil our Kittiwake cove with all their rubbish. I vote we go and see what they're up to, once we're off the ferry." Peggy Bettany looked doubtful, but Bride, Maeve and Rosalie agreed, so as soon as the ferry docked the four girls jumped off and ran around the path towards the cliffs above Kittiwake cove. When they got there, the five girls were pulling their sailing boat up onto the sand.

"All safe, Able-seamen!" called the biggest. "Mate Susan, shall we have a chocolate ration before we go any further?" One of the other girls looked up.

"I suppose so,” she said, doubtfully. "Shouldn't we get on, though?"

"Oh, we have plenty of time." the smallest girl said, glancing at her watch. "Let's sit down."

"It's not anywhere near as nice as Wild Cat island, is it?" one of them demanded. The others seemed to agree.

"What cheek!" Tom exclaimed, on the top of the cliff. Her clear voice floated down to the girls sitting below, and they all looked up.

"Natives!" one of them exclaimed, gleefully. "What fun!"

I'm not so sure about this bit. I can't write Nancy very well, but I've had a go.

"Natives!" one of them exclaimed, gleefully. "What fun!" The five Chalet School girls, throwing caution to the winds, ran down the cliff path.

"Look here!" Tom began angrily "What do you mean by saying things like that? This is a jolly fine island, better than most! Who are you to come here and say things about it?"

"We're the Amazons,” said the biggest girl.

"And the Swallows." One of the smaller one put in. "And Dot, who isn't either, but belongs to us just the same."

"And this isn't a patch on our island." the biggest girl finished again, with a glare at the smaller one. "And shiver my timbers, Able-seaman Titty, don't be such a galoot. When there are natives about, it's the Captain who speaks."

"Sorry, Captain Nancy." the younger girl replied, moving backwards towards the others.

"Look here!" Tom began again, thinking it was time that she got this rather bizarre conversation back under control. "The point is that this is our cove. It belongs to the school." The remaining girl opened her mouth, but Captain Nancy stood firmly on her toes. "And you are not allowed to be here, let alone cover it with rubbish from your picnic."

"As if we would..." began the smaller girl, but was interrupted.

"Jib-booms and bobstays, first mate, will you stop talking!" demanded the "Captain". "We will picnic where ever we choose and do whatever we like until someone in authority comes to tell us otherwise. And you four are not someone in authority. Just because you come from some stupid school, which is probably a load of nonsense, doesn't give you the right to tell us what to do. We won't do any harm to this beach so you can go away and leave us alone."

"How dare you call the school a load of nonsense?" Bride demanded "And we're older than you all, and we live here, so of course we have authority!"

"That may be. It doesn't mean I'm going to listen to you." "Captain Nancy" replied. And with that, turning her back on them, she marched off across the sand, followed by the other girl.

As they walked away, a piece of chocolate wrapping blew out of Nancy's pocket and down towards the sea. Titty spotted it and was after it like a shot, but Nancy remained oblivious, and Titty took enough time that Tom was able to shout

"Hey!" The Blackett's turned to face her. "Look!" she exclaimed. "You did that on purpose! I said you would litter up our beach!" Nancy stared at her in astonishment, convinced that she was mad.

"I did what?" she demanded. Bride waved a hand towards Titty, who had caught the paper at the water's edge and was waving it triumphantly.

"Shiver my timbers, you don't mean to say that you think I did that on purpose?" Nancy said, laughing. "As if I would!" Her laughter was at the triviality of the incident, but to the angry Tom it seemed mocking, and, her temper snapping, she flew at the other girl and shook her violently.

Nancy tried to retaliate, but, tall and strong though she was, Tom was bigger and stronger and she stood no chance. Peggy, after her first moment of shock, launched herself on Tom, and between them the two sisters managed to send her sprawling on her back in the soft sand. Bride headed towards them, but Peggy Bettany, who was horrified at the turn events had taken, called her back.

"Bride! What are you thinking?" she demanded. "Help Tom up and come on. I'm ashamed of both of you! And we're going to be late!" she exclaimed, with a glance at her watch. "Even though we got the early ferry. We need to run. And we don't tell anyone at school about this, do you hear? The last thing we need is to be in a row before term even starts." Much chastened, Bride helped Tom to her feet and brushed the sand off her. Maeve and Rosalie stood staring in disbelief at Tom, and Peggy looked angrier than anyone had ever seen her. Agreeing to keep silent about what had happened, the little group took to their heels and fled back to school.

#43:  Author: EilidhLocation: Macclesfield PostPosted: Tue Nov 22, 2005 8:21 am

Thanks for all the comments. I get the Peggy's confused myself at times, but I'm doing my best to make it plain which is which, without reffering to them as Peggy Blackett and Peggy Bettany all the time. This bit is all Peggy Blackett.

Meanwhile, the girls on the beach were unpacking night cases from the bottom of the sailing boat.

"We should get changed." Susan said, firmly, finishing her chocolate. "You might have been a bit nicer, Nancy. They looked about your age. You might have to be in a class with them and then what would you do?"

"Have a war." Nancy replied, rather muffled as she dragged her jumper over her head.

"Nancy! We can't, we're at school!" Susan said, shocked, as she shook out the skirt of her brown and white checked gingham dress. Nancy regarded hers with distaste before replying,

"Of course we can. How dare she shake me? We're all in the same room, aren't we? It'll be easy. We've never been at school together before and I intend to have fun now. That horrid girl deserves it! Anyone else agree? Able-seaman Titty?" Titty thought for a few minutes, and then considered how much easier French verbs would be to cope with if she was having a war at the same time. And indeed, how dare the Tom-girl shake Captain Nancy?

"Agreed." she said.

"Mate Peggy?"

"Agreed." Peggy didn't even stop to think.

"Able-seaman Dot?"

"Will we get into trouble?" Dorothea asked.

"Of course not!" Peggy assured her, ignoring Susan's glance.

"Agreed, then."

"Good." Nancy said. "Now, Mate Susan? Are you agreed?" Susan thought. The mistresses at the school weren't likely to let Nancy carry on a full-scale war under their noses, and the girls might not even have been at the same school as they would be.

"Agreed." she said, finally.

"Good for you!" Nancy exclaimed. "Now, what do we need to do to get ourselves looking presentable to go and introduce ourselves?" Susan looked round at them all.

"Dot needs to re-do her plait." she said, "And you need to take of those red hats." she added with a grin to the Amazons. They pulled them off, while Dorothea, the only one of the group to have long hair, untangled it and began to re-plait it. Susan pulled Titty's dress straight, and when they all passed her inspection they headed up the cliff towards the top path.

"It's the way those other girls went" Nancy said, "So it must go to somewhere, and then we can find a native to tell us where our school is."

A short while later she was found to be correct, as five neat and proper looking schoolgirls stood on the rug in Miss Annersley's study.

"Now," she said, glancing at them all "who is who?" Nancy spoke up.

"I'm Nancy Blackett,” she said, "and this is my sister, Peggy. These are Susan and Titty Walker, and Dorothea Callum." Miss Annersley smiled round at them all.

"Nancy and Peggy?" she asked "Not Ruth and Margaret?" she bit her lips as both girls made identical faces. "That will be fine. And Titty?" she asked, looking at that young lady. Titty came to earth with a jump. She had been watching a seagull on the window ledge, and imagining being a seagull herself. She had been wondering if Peter Duck had ever wanted to be a seagull, and then wondered if a girls boarding school was the correct place for Peter Duck to be. Maybe she should have left him in his cave in Swallowdale while she came to school. It was at this point that Miss Annersley spoke to her, and she had jumped.

"Yes?" she said, nervously.

"They call you Titty, then, not Mavis." Miss Annersley said, kindly.

"Yes, Miss Annersley." Titty replied.

"And if I can check your ages?" the Head continued. "Nancy?"

"I'm 16." that young lady replied. "Peggy is 15, Susan is 13, and Titty and Dot are 11."

"Thank you." the head replied. "Now, we split forms by ability here, not by age. You may find yourselves in a lower form than you would like to start with, maybe because of your languages, or because you've missed something at your last school. You will find out tomorrow what form you are in. Your dormitory is at the top of the house; you are all together, with one other girl as your dormitory prefect. She has also arrived, but is out for a walk at the moment. Tea will be in an hour, so you will have time to get settled in first. Your trunks are here already, and Matron will have you for unpacking after tea. I think that is all for just now. I'll take you up to your dormitory." and rising, she led them through the house, thinking as she did what a well mannered girl Nancy Blackett was.

When they had been left in their dormitory to unpack their night things, Nancy took command.

"It's a lot nicer than where we were before, isn't it?" she asked, rapidly removing things from her case.

"Yes." Peggy replied, distantly. "Listen, Nancy, do you think one of those girls from the beach might be our prefect?"

"No!" Nancy exclaimed, tidying things into drawers, and trying to pretend that the same thought had not occurred to her. "Come on, First Mate, make things shipshape. Lets have this dorm as tidy as Amazon."

Susan and Dorothea were already putting their things away tidily, but at her words both Titty and Peggy began to re-sort the jumble of things on their beds and put them neatly folded into the drawers, which were marked with what each should contain.

"So, when for the war, Captain Nancy?" Peggy demanded, when they were more or less organised.

"We'll give it a few days. After all, like Susan said, they might not even be here!"

"Oh!" Dorothea exclaimed suddenly. "Our names are on these curtains!" she displayed a neatly printed label, which read 'D. Callum'. At her words, Nancy leaped across the room to the cubicle opposite hers, which was the dormitory prefect's.

"L.M. Gay." she read. "Well, that girl was called Tom, and the other one was Bride, and I don't see how you can get either of them from L.M. Gay."

"Don't see haw you get Nancy from Ruth either though! Although they just said 'school'." Peggy pointed out, stretching out on her now clear bed. "And the didn't have any uniforms on, so they could be at another one, like you said. Mmm... comfortable." she added. At that moment there come the sound of sharp heels clicking in the corridor. Nancy hastily dropped the curtain she was holding and Peggy jumped off the bed as the door swung open and a small woman, not much bigger than Titty and dwarfed by tall Nancy came bustling in.

"I'm Matron." she said, glancing round and pulling the cover on Peggy's bed tidy. "Who's who here? And who's been on this bed? Bed's are for night time and illness, and if I catch anyone on one at any other time we'll see how you like a few days there." Peggy flushed, and Susan stepped forward.

"I'm Susan Walker," she said, "and this is my sister, Titty. These are Dorothea Callum and Peggy and Nancy Blackett." Matron looked sharply at them all, then made a few notes on her clipboard.

"More nicknames." she said, smiling. "What a dorm this is going to be for names! Now, I came to tell you that if you want you can go for a run round the gardens, or you can go to the middle common room until tea. Which would you rather?"

"The garden, I think." Nancy replied, after a quick glance at her followers. Matron gave them directions, reminded them to put on their coats, and left them to it.

I'm really enjoying this Eilidh, thank you.

Clare - Peter Duck is Titty's imaginary friend, I suppose is the best way to put it. He appears in 'Peter Duck' and 'Swallowdale', and possibly some of the others that I haven't read yet. Robin, another spelling of my name is Ailie.

Meanwhile, the Bettany's and their friends were returning along the cliff path, discussing the girls they had seen that morning.

"You had no right to behave as you did. That girl dod nothing to warrant the shaking you gave her! It would serve you right if her people reported you to the head!" Peggy wound up.

"They were very rude." Rosalie observed, trying to smooth things over. Maeve nodded her agreement, but wasa too scared of her new angry sister to say anything else.

"They would be terrible at school. It's just as well they're only trippers." Bride said. "Look, they've left their boat. They must be on the island somewhere."

"We should cast it off." Tom said, still angry.

"Tom, you can't!" Rosalie exclaimed, but the impulsive Tom was already tearing down the cliff path to the beach. After a curt instruction to Rosalie and Maeve to stay where they were, Peggy took off after her, pulling Bride. They were too late to catch Tom, however, and she was already pushing Amazon with all her strength by the time the Bettany sister's reached her and pulled her back. Luckily the tide had gone out since Nancy had left her ship, and a boat which needs at least two to pull it out the water needed more than just Tom's strength to push it back in. The little boat rocked in the sand, but refused to move.

"Tom! You can't do that!" Peggy said, now even angrier than she had been before. "That's an expensive boat, and you would have wrecked it if you'd managed to cast it off. What are you thinking? Miss Annersley would have been so furious, and I would have been in as much trouble as you! I'm supposed to be in charge! Now get back up the path!" It was so rare for quiet Peggy to lose her temper so thoroughly Tom obeyed her without thinking, and obediently ran back up to where Rosalie and Maeve were waiting, while Peggy and Bride followed behind.

"I wonder where those girls are." Maeve said, when they were walking again.

"Well, I don't know, but I'm glad that we didn't meet them." Peggy said, firmly. "And we're going to stop talking about them as well. Tom, well done on getting to be a dormy pree." Tom smiled.

"Thanks." she said. "As long as the new girls are ok."

"How many do you have?" Bride demanded.

"Five!" Tom replied. "All but me. The Abbess said that they're a group of friends from home whose mothers wanted them to be together. Their names are Ruth and Margaret Blackett, Susan and Mavis Walker, and Dorothea Callum."

"Not the girls from the beach then?" Rosalie said. "They had a Peggy, who could be your Margaret, but you can't get Nancy out of any of those names."

"You can't get Tom out of Lucinda either." Bride pointed out with a grin, then added. "Race you all back to school!" before tearing along the road. Her sisters and friends were quick to follow her, and they all tore back down the path and into the school gardens, where they rushed to the splasheries and headed to the Speisesaal for tea.

On entering, Tom stopped short so suddenly that Bride crashed into her back, before seeing what her friend had seconds before.

On entering, Tom stopped short so suddenly that Bride crashed into her back, before seeing what her friend had seconds before. Seated at a table with Miss Annersley, Matron, and Miss Dene were their rude acquaintances from earlier that day. In addition, each was dressed in immaculate Chalet School uniform. She had just had time to notice this when Miss Annersley glanced up.

"What are you standing there for, Tom?" she demanded. "You're already late. Come in and sit down. These are our new girls. Nancy, Peggy, Susan, Titty, and Dorothea. Girls, these are Peggy, Tom, Bride, Maeve and Rosalie."

The new girls smiled politely, as did Peggy and Rosalie, while Tom and Bride managed grimaces that could have passed for smiles, and small Maeve stalked in without looking at them. Luckily, Miss Annersley was looking away at that point, and so they escaped the lecture that their rudeness deserved.

The meal passed more or less in silence, and then the girls were dismissed to the middle common room, as there were ominous dark clouds on the horizon. They immediately split into two group, neither keen to mix, and while the old girls occupied one end of the room, the new girls wandered around and examined things, before settling down with books from the many shelves which ran around the walls. Nancy, sitting with her book, barely took in a word of it. She was intent on plotting a campaign against Tom and her friends, which was interrupted as Peggy Bettany came over and sat down beside her.

"Hello." Peggy began, hesitantly. Nancy smiled back at her. Peggy had had nothing to do with the argument in Kittiwake cove, and Nancy Blackett was not an unfair girl.

"I'm Peggy Bettany." she said, reassured by the smile. "Over there are my sisters Bride and Maeve, and Brides friends Tom Gay and Rosalie Way. I thought I would welcome you to the Chalet School."

"Thank you." Nancy replied. "I'm Nancy Blackett, and there are my sister Peggy, Susan and Titty Walker, and Dorothea Callum." Peggy smiled at the others, and turned back to Nancy.

"Where are you all from?"

"Peggy and I come from the North West." Nancy replied. "Susan and Titty live mainly in the South, because their father's in the navy, but they're at school all year and they spend their holidays at a farm near us, so they're hardly ever there. And Dorothea spends her holidays near us too." Peggy nodded.

"We live in Devon now, but we were born in India, then we lived in Austria, the Guernsey, than in a little village near Armiford."

"You have moved about!" Peggy Blackett put in. "That must be exciting." Peggy Bettany shrugged.

"Dad was in the forests when we were born, and India doesn't have a good climate for children, so they sent Bride and I, and my twin Rix and our younger brother Jackie to Austria to live with Aunt Madge. She lived there because that's where the school was to start with, and she started it. Then when the war came and we had to leave, we went to Guernsey. Then when the war got there we moved to Howells Village, just outside Armiford, and lived there with Auntie Madge until Mother and Dad came home a few years ago."

"Traitor." Tom said at this point, loudly enough to be heard.

Good for Peggy for trying to be friends. Tom is definitely the one to blame for the feud. I bet she feels angry with herself when she realises that she won't be able to learn to sail in the Blacketts' boat.

#82:  Author: EilidhLocation: Macclesfield PostPosted: Tue Nov 29, 2005 10:32 am

"Traitor." Tom said at this point, loudly enough to be heard. Peggy flushed.

"I'm not." she replied, calmly. "I'm welcoming new puils to Auntie Madge's school like she would if she was here. You should know that, Bride." Her sister looked away and ignored her.

"They insulted the school, the island, and us. You shouldn't have anything to do with them." Tom retorted.

"Shiver my timbers!" Nancy replied, shocked. "We didn't know this was the school you went to! We would hardly mean to insult our own school!"

"How many schools did you think there were on the island?" Bride asked. "You can hardly expect us to believe that!" At that, no less a person than Dorothea took a hand.

"Captain Nancy isn't lying!" she exclaimed. "How should we have known how many schools were on the island? We didn't know you had just got off the boat, you could have lived here and gone to the village school or anything!"

"Hold your tongue, Able-seaman Dot." Nancy snapped. Pleased though she was that the younger girl was supporting her, she didn't want any more trouble for Titty and Dot from their new classmates than was necessary. She imagined that they were about the same age as Maeve, and that young lady hadn't even looked at them yet. Their time at school could be made unpleasant enough without any additional problems.

At this point the Bride, Tom, Rosalie and Maeve got up and went out. They stalked past Peggy without looking at her, and she gave small smile.

"They'll get over it,” she said It's Tom's fault, I don't know what's got into her. She must have gone off her head. I'll make sure that the rest of the girls know that, too." At this point a bell rang, and Peggy looked round.

"That's bed for anyone under 13." she explained. Titty and Dorothea exchanged a look, but before they had time to say anything, Matron had arrived to collect them and show them where to go. When they left, Susan pulled her chair over to the other three, and they chatted quietly until the bell rang summoning Susan and Peggy Blackett to bed. They went gratefully, both being tired by the morning's sailing and their new experiences.

Hope this bit doesn't disappoint anybody!

When they were alone, Peggy Bettany turned to Nancy.

"I know that you upset Tom and Bride this afternoon." she began. "I don't want to say anything about it, other than that I think they were as much to blame as you were and if they try to make problems for you all with the other girls I'll tell them that. OK?" Nancy nodded gratefully. Talking to this calm, poised young woman she forgot she was Captain Nancy Blackett, Pirate and Terror of the Seas, and forgot that she had declared war on the Chalet group.

"Thank you." she replied. "I appreciate that." Before she could say anything else, Miss Annersley burst into the room, looking unaccustomedly flustered.

"Peggy, your mother has just phoned." she said. "The boy's school has just phoned her to say that Maurice has German measles. You haven't had it, and neither has Maeve, so I have to isolate you. Nancy, dear, I'm afraid that I also have to isolate anyone from your group who hasn't had it. Who will that be?" Nancy thought.

"I haven't had it,” she said. "Peggy has, though. I don't know about the rest. You'd have to ask Susan, probably."

"Thank you." The headmistress replied, distractedly. "I will go and ask them immediately. You will all have to move to the San tonight, I'm afraid. We can't risk infection in the dorms with the rest of the school arriving tomorrow. You can both go to your dorms and pack your belongings to move to the san." Late though it was, the school burst into a hive of activity, and within a surprisingly short time only Tom, Bride, and Peggy Blackett were left in their dorms. Peggy felt the uncomfortable silence as Matron turned out the light, and wished desperately that she had been sent to San with everyone else. Anything rather than be left alone with the two girls who seemed to hate them more than any of the others.

My apologies if Peggy Bettany has already had German Measles in Gay. I can't remember and it suits my purpose to give her them just now!

The following morning, after a breakfast where Tom and Bride reminisced about their classmates and events from previous terms, while Peggy listened politely, they were called to do last minute jobs. Tom spent the morning in the gym, sorting through the sports equipment, while Bride sorted through a pile of library books and Peggy helped Miss Dane with the stationary order. After lunch they were told to get into uniform, and sent down to meet the other girls off the ferry. Miss Annersley watched them go, Tom and Bride chatting together again while Peggy listened.

"They're not making much effort to include her,” she observed to Rosalie. "That's not like Tom and Bride."

"They can't get on with everybody, though." Rosalie pointed out, then rushed to answer the 'phone, leaving the Head watching the girls until they were out of sight with a worried expression on her face.

#103:  Author: EilidhLocation: Macclesfield PostPosted: Fri Dec 02, 2005 11:30 am

As soon as the girls disembarked from the ferry, Peggy, standing on the outskirts of the crowd, watched Tom and Bride circulate among girls of their own age, talking urgently to them and then moving on. The result was that when the large group moved away from the ferry landing, the senior middles moved off in a clump, leaving their newest member standing alone by the side of the road.

The following few weeks of term followed in a similar fashion. Peggy found herself placed in Upper Fourth, while Nancy was to grace Lower Fifth with Bride and Tom. Susan would be a member of Lower Fourth, and Titty and Dot had been placed in Lower Third. Upper Fourth contained such redoubtable young ladies as Clem Barrass, Betsy Lucy, the Ozanne twins, and Primula Venables, and before a week of the term was over, these were split into two camps.

Clem and Betsy had taken a liking to Peggy from the start, accepting her explanation that they hadn't known who the girls or the school they referred to were, and, in addition, realising that it was Nancy who most deserved their dislike. The rest of the form, however, followed Primula Venables, who had heard the full story from her cousin and held that none of the girls should be spoken too until they had apologised for saying such horrible things about the school and the island.

Tom, meanwhile, was not having a nice time over the first few weeks. Not allowing even quarentine to stop their war, the girls crept out of the san in the evening, and abstracted one of Tom's belongings each night. The second morning of the new term, she got up to find her hairbrush missing. The day after that, it turned up under her bed, but her Guide badge had gone. The following day again, the badge was found on top of her clean blouses, but her towel had vanished without trace. Tom would have suspected Peggy, but, after a hasty semaphore discussion with her sister, that young lady made sure she was within full view of Tom or Bride each evening between changing and bedtime. It never occured to them to think of the girls in quarentine, and Tom was therefore thouroughly confused.

In the San, the new girls found time passing slowly. The Bettany girls and Rosalie had developed German Measles, although the other four remained clear. They could sit on the broad windowsills and watch the rest of the school outside during their walks and games, and Nancy had been relived to see her sister firmly flanked by Clem and Betsy every time she appeared in sight. However, other than their nightly excursions to Tom's cubicle, the girls had little in the way of excitement.

"I'm bored!" Nancy complained, one day in the last week. "I've read all those books, I've done all the jigsaw's, and I don't know what to do next. I wish Captain Flint was here, he always has good ideas."

"Captain Flint would hardly be in a girls school!" Dorothea pointed out. She had suffered less than the others because she had been scribbling away at a new novel all the wihle. "What about Peter Duck, Titty?"

"Peter Duck is outside." Tiity replied absently. "He didn't like being in here, with all the girls. He's camping at the cove with Amazon."

Nancy and Susan exchanged glances at this. They, Peggy, and John, had had a discussion at the end of the last holidays, and had come to the conclusion that Peter Duck was far to real to Titty.

"Peter Duck is a story, Titty." Susan pointed out. There was no response. Shrugging her shoulders, she decided to leave it until another time.

Very sorry Rachel! I shall do my best to remedy that! Laughing

As the last days of quarantine passed by, the feud was escalating. The staff was aware of the problem, but not it's cause, and discussed it one evening in the staffroom.

"There's something going on." Hilary Burn stated, during a lull in the conversation. "I had Upper Fourth for gym today, and they're hardly speaking!"

"It's the same with all the forms." Pam Slater said. "There seems to be a large group and a small one in every form, and I don't know what it's about."

"It could have something to do with that group of new girls who came at the start of term," the Head said.

"Nonsense!" Nell Wilson replied. "They've been in quarantine since the evening they got here! They didn't have time to fall out with anyone."

"I'm not so sure." Hilda replied, and briefly told them what she had observed from the study window.

"That’s not like Tom and Bride." Hilary said. "They can be a lot of things, but never rude!"

"Tom has become extremely careless." Matron said, suddenly. "Every day there is something else missing, and the day after it re-appears! That's not like her either!"

"When we got off the boat, all the middles and the fifth form moved off in a group, and left Peggy Blackett standing at the side of the road. I remember thinking it was strange at the time, but put it down to excitement over being back together." Jeanne de Lachenaise added, thoughtfully.

"I'll make some enquiries on Monday." Hilda promised, thinking that by that time quarantine would be over and hopefully she would be able to get to the bottom of it.

The following day, after asking permission of Nancy and the Head, Peggy invited her new friends to see Amazon. Clem and Betsy accepted eagerly, since both had done a lot of sailing, Clem at the many seaside locations where her parents had set up home, and Betsy in the seas around Guernsey. They were delighted with the little sailing boat drawn up in Kittiwake Cove, and eagerly helped Peggy to launch her before they all climbed in. They spent a few hours sailing around the bay, although mindful of Nancy's instructions, Peggy refused to allow Clem to steer further out. She had no wish to be shipwrecked on any unknown rocks, but she would rather even that than face Nancy if Amazon was injured while she was in charge. She remembered the day when John had wrecked Swallow, and shuddered. Betsy noticed.

"What is it?" she demanded. "Are you cold?" Peggy shook her head, although the wind had risen and it was getting colder. Clem had spotted this, and glancing around spied a heave bank of dark cloud on the horizon.

"We'd better go in.,” she advised, waving her hand towards it. "It looks like we're in for a storm." Peggy glanced up and paled, although her voice was steady as she issued her instructions, and they reached the shore safely, where they made Amazon safe and hurried up the beach.

Miss Annersley was setting out to look for them as they hurried up the drive, and she waved them inside thankfully.

"Hurry up, girls, please! It looks like a bad storm coming up, and I was just coming to make sure you were on your way back. Go and change, and get ready for Kaffee, please."

In the dormitory, Peggy found Tom, brushing her short hair violently before the mirror. The two girls had more or less ignored each other since the rest of the dormitory had gone to the san, and despite her fear of the approaching storm, Peggy felt the familiar angry sensations when she saw the girl who had made her first few weeks so difficult. She had no illusions about the fact that Tom and Bride had told most of the Fourth and Fifth forms not to speak to them, and being a friendly young person had felt this keenly. She changed quickly and silently, and was ready when Tom held the door open for her to tail on to the next dormitory.

Through out the evening's entertainment (a series of tableaux provided by the joint Third forms) Peggy listened to the rain beating on the windows with growing dread. When the display was finished, Miss Annersley stepped up to the dais.

"We are sending you all to bed now, girls, because there are reports that the storm will worsen overnight. Should any of you awaken in the night please stay in your dormitories. Dormitory prefect, please act responsibly." Peggy shivered at the thought of the approaching storm, and was slow in following the rest of the form out of the hall.

"Hurry up!" snapped Nella Ozanne, who was behind her. Peggy jumped to her feet and hurried on, grateful that the tapping of so many feet drowned out the noise of the rain temporarily. As she climbed the stairs, she suddenly realised that someone would be in the dormitory already, collecting something else belonging to Tom and replacing her toothpaste somewhere she would find it easily. Sure enough, Dorothea stood in Tom's cubicle, helping herself to the clean stockings that young lady had left out for the following day.

"Hide!" Peggy gasped, aware that Lower V were following close behind her. Without asking any questions, Dorothea dived across the room and under Peggy's bed, pushing the stockings into the pocket of her dress. It just goes to show, Peggy thought, how much she's changed since we met her.

In the San, Nancy sat curled in an armchair, listening to the rain beating down. She had a book in her hands, but she wasn't reading it. She was thinking about Peggy, and how scared she would be, alone in the dormitory with just Tom. At that moment nurse came in, to order them off to bed, and she went to the little isolation room she shared with Susan in silence, still thinking. Distracted by the approaching storm, Nurse didn't notice the missing Dorothea, who was still curled up under Peggy's bed. Tom, however, did notice her missing stockings, and, marching over, threw Peggy's curtains open.

"Turn out your pockets." she demanded. Peggy stared at her.

"I beg your pardon?" she asked, quietly. Tom repeated her demand. Peggy shrugged her shoulders, and pulled out the lingings of her pockets. Only her handkerchief fluttered to the floor, and Tom returned to her own cubicle, puzzled. After a few minutes she left for the bathroom, and Dorothea wriggled snakelike out from under the bed, before taking off like a shot back towards the san. By a miracle she got there unseen, and clambered into be in the room she and Tiity shared gratefully, pushing the stolen stockings under her pillow.

It was the early hours of the morning when the school was awoken by a crash of thunder. Peggy sat bolt upright, and then realised what was happening and dived headfirst under the blankets where she lay sobbing. Tom jumped out of bed and ran to the window which was hers by virtue of being dormitory prefect, where she pulled back the curtains and stared out at the storm. She was entranced by the sight, until a lull in the thunder brought the sound of a muffled sob to her ears. Pulling on her dressing gown, she pushed back the cubicle curtains and crossed the passageway to Peggy's cubicle. Forgetting her dislike for the girl, and the feud with her sister, she pulled back the covers firmly and set to work to calm the terrified Peggy.

Meanwhile in the San, Nancy was pacing up and down the length of their room.

"Shiver my timbers!" she exclaimed to Susan, who sat curled on her bed watching her. "I should get out of here! That mate of mine is going to be a mess, and only That Girl in the dorm with her!" Susan, who had heard this all already, sighed, got up, and threw Nancy her dressing gown.

"Go then!" she exclaimed, "If it makes you happy, go and see her! But if you get caugh roaming about the school, Miss Annersley is not going to be pleased!"

"Jib-booms and bobstays, Mate Susan, I won't get caught!"

"Jib-booms and bobstays, Mate Susan, I won't get caught!" Nancy exclaimed, holding her arms out and twirling around as if this guaranteed it. "Now, where's that nurse." she muttered to herself, peering around the door. Having satisfied herself that Nurse was with the invalids, Nancy wrapped her dressing gown around her and hurried off, out of the san, and through the long confusiong corridors. She knew the way to her dorm, as she had taken part in enough raids on Tom's cubicle, and she ran lightly through the dark passages. She could hear movement in the dorms as she passed, and on one occasion had to leap onto the nearest window ledge when matron's voice was heard. That efficient lady was too preoccupied with hysterical girls to notice a slightly odd looking curtain, and passed by Nancy without even a glance. As soon as she was gone, Nancy removed herself from her perch and hurried along to her dormitory, where she rushed in and threw back the curtains around her sister's cubicle. She stopped short in shock to see Tom sitting on the edge of Peggy's bed, and Peggy herself far calmer than Nancy had expected.

"What are you doing here?" Tom demanded. "You're supposed to be in isolation!"

"I came to see how Peggy was." Nany replied, bemused.

"I'm fine." Peggy herself replied. "Tom is going to stay here until the thunder passes."

"I should report you for this!" Tom snapped. Nancy ignored her, and concentrated on Peggy.

"Are you sure you're ok?" she asked, doubtfully. Peggy nodded.

"Thanks for coming to see, but you shouldn't really be here. What will Matey say?"

"Matey won't catch me!" Nancy snorted "I'm an Amazon Pirate! Now, so long as you're sure?" Peggy nodded, and puzzled, Nancy let herself back out the room.

The following morning the dormitory had returned to it's customary silence. Tom was trying to decide whether or not to report Nancy, and Peggy found herself longing for the following day when her friends would be released. The Sunday passed quietly, and on the Monday morning the Swallows, Captain Nancy, and Dorothea made their debut to the rest of the school.

It was unfortunate for Nancy that Peggy Bettany was still in San, and she found herself in difficulties. More or less without exception, the senior school refused to speak to her until she had apologised for her rudeness, and, as she didn't believe she had been rude, she refused to do so. She got her revenge by throwing herself into her school work and both amazed and outraged the class by going straight to the top of the form and staying there.

Susan, being a quieter personality, found herself seated beside one Verity-Anne Carey. Verity-Anne liked what she knew of the new girl, and as even Tom had nothing bed to say about Susan, the two girls developed something approaching friendship.

Among the junior middles, Con Maynard had amazed everyone by taking an instant liking to Tiity and Dorothea and refusing to be swayed by anyone. Her sister supported Maeve thoroughly, but Con enjoyed the company of Dorothea the Writer and Titty the Dreamer. The three little girls were often seen together, discussing a plot line in either Con or Dorothea's stories, or the adventures of Peter Duck, whom Con was fascinated by. She would listen for hours to Titty's tales of his adventures, and indeed did, when they had the time.

By the time half term approached, the feud had reached a stalemate. MIss Annersley had interviewed as mant people as she could think off, and all were adament that there was no problem. Tom and Bride kept silent because they knew they behaviour was anything but what the school would expect of them. The new girls kept quiet on Nancy's orders. Nancy herself was desperatly miserable, and had vowed on more than one occasion that she was going to ask her mother to remove her at the end of term. The others, having found a few supporters, were not so unhappy, but as Titty said, it wasn't right not to have Captian Nancy Shivering Timbers and calling people Galoots. Dorothea agreed with her, but they didn't see what they could do.

The one bright spot was that they were to be allowed to sail Amazon as often as they could over the half term weekend, and on the Saturday Morning they rose early, dressed in their old sailing clothes, and headed out.

To Nancy it was just like the old times, as she shouted orders, gave instructions, and generally organised her crew to get the boat under sail. They were to sail her to the next island, where they were allowed to picnic, and then return in the evening. The monks who lived on the island would not let them return if there was danger from the weather, so Miss Annersley felt quite happy to let them go.

Shortly afterwards, Tom and Bride pulled away from the school landing point in Ste Therese, bound on a similar day as the girls in Amazon. They both rowed and swam well, and set off at good speed over the water.

As the day drew to a close, Nancy, with an anxious eye on the weather, got her crew back on the water again. They were sailing swiftly back towards St Briavels, when Dot, who was crouched before the mast, shouted

"Boat ahead!" Peggy glanced up from the tiller, and spotted the School rowing boat. She was tempted to stay on course, as Amazon would almost certainly come off better in a collision, but the thought of Nancy's wrath over ruled this and she swung the boat to the side.

Tom and Bride were struggling. A long row, followed by a day's swimming had tired them out, and they were finding it harder and harder to row against the tide. Nancy could see this, and, all bad feeling aside, called out,

"Ahoy!" Tom glanced up, saw Amazon pulling up nearby and looked away again, but Nancy persevered.

"We can help you back to school!" she shouted, brandishing a length of rope and leaning precariously over the side of the boat.

"Nancy!" Susan shrieked, grabbing her belt. Nancy ignored her. She was watching the little rowing boat anxiously, and could see that the two girls were making no headway at all against the tide. Eventually Tom looked at her, and nodded reluctantly.

Nancy passed the rope forward and Dot threw it to the boat with an aim that did credit to Nancy's hours of patient teaching. Unfortunatly the boat spun slightly as she threw, and it fell just short. Tom, forgetting where she was, made a dive forward to catch it, and Bride couldn't move quickly enough to balance the boat. To the accompaniment of their shrieks, the two girls were tossed out of the boat into the water, and the boat, righting itself, bobbed away on the tide.

"Titty! Lifebelt! Susan! Tiller! Peggy! With me! Dot! Get that rope in and stand ready!" She had barely finished the last word when she left the boat in a perfect swallow dive, followed within seconds by her sister. Susan scrambled across and grabbed the tiller, bringing the boat hard round, and narrowly missing the school rowing boat which was still drifting.Titty siezed the lifebelt from the bottom of the boat and knelt ready to throw it. Dorothea dragged the heavy, wet rope into the boat and held the end, watching the Amazon's anxiously.

Nancy and Peggy meanwhile, had found the other two girls and were helping them as well as they could. Nancy struggled with Tom, who had banged her head and was rather bemused, while Peggy helped Bride to swim towards Amazon. Titty, watching Nancy's struggles, threw the Amazon life belt towards her, and the Captain grabbed it gratefully. Dorothea followed suit with the rope, and Nancy, treading water frantically, managed to knot it aound Tom's waist. Titty, seeing what was happening, grabbed hold of Dorothea's rope and the two little girls pulled toegther, gradually drawing the two seniors nearer to Amazon. Peggy and Bride, meanwhile, had reached the sailing boat successfully, and were hanging on, too tired to pull themselves in. Nancy, supporting Tom, reached them a few minutes later. Susan handed the tiller over the Dorothea, and she and Titty between them helped the four older girls in.

Amazon had never been built to hold seven, Susan realised, as Dorothea gave the tiller to Peggy and scrambled back to her position before the mast. She curled up in as small a space as she could, and Titty squeezed in beside her. Susan sat on the bottom of the boat, and the others squeezed in as best they could. Peggy sailed them carefully back to the island, and they tied up at the school landing place. Nancy, Peggy, Bride, and Tom climbed out carefully.

"Dorothea too." Susan instructed. "Titty and I can manage her round to Kittiwake cove, and she's exhausted." Dorothea shook her head.

"I'm fine." she replied, although she was feeling tired out by her long day, swimming, sailing, and excitement. Nancy took a step forward.

"Come on, then." Tom said, beginning to walk towards the Big House. Peggy shook her head.

"Wait for Dot."

"She's not coming, she said so." Bride said. Peggy smiled.

"She'll come when Captain Nancy tells her to!" Sure enough, Dorothea joined them a few seconds later, and Peggy and Bride led the way to the school, with Tom and Nancy helping Dorothea up behind them.

"Will you tell me something?" Bride asked.

"What?" Peggy said, shortly. She had an unpraisworhty tendancy to hold a grudge, and hadn't forgotten how miserable these two girls had made herself and her sister.

"Why do you call your sister Captain?" Bride asked. She had been curios about this for a long time. And so, for the rest of the walk up to school, Peggy told her about Wild Cat Island, Swallow, and the Amazon Pirates, about Swallowdale, and Peter Duck, and Captain Flint, and the Houseboat. She talked about the natives in Rio, and the charcoal burners, and Bride listened entranced, and forgot how cold and wet she was.

As Peggy prepared to move on to the subject of the Winter holidays, and tell Bride about the skating on the tarn and Nancy's mumps, they reached the school. Ignoring rules, Tom and Nancy marched the exhausted Dorothea through the front door and Peggy and Bride followed. The noise brought Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, Miss Dene, and Matron from the study, where they had been having coffee, and they exclaimed aloud at the four shivering, dripping creatures in the entrance hall. Without waiting for any explanations, Matron herded the for older girls upstairs to hot baths, leaving Dorothea to face her colleagues. Dorothea, finding herself left alone, promptly sat down on the floor and burst into tears, so Miss Wilson picked her up and took her up to bed, where she stayed with her until she fell asleep.

By the time she returned to the study, Susan and Titty had been found in the Splashery, putting their shoes away, and were now standing in front of Miss Annersley's desk. Susan was finishing up the tale of the afternoon, and Titty was staring dreamily out of the window.

"And so we all squeezed into Amazon and came back to school." Susan wound up.

"I see." Miss Annersley said, thoughtfully. "It seems that we owe Nancy and Peggy some thanks. But I didn't think that Nancy and Tom were on such good terms that Nancy would offer to tow her back to school?"

"Captain Nancy would never leave anyone in trouble on the water." Titty said, distantly. Miss Annersley suppressed a smile.

"Glad to hear it." she responded gravely. "Now, I feel it is time that both of you went to bed. You look very tired, and I think you should be much better in the morning." Susan and Titty dropped their curtsies and left the study, inwardly annoyed that they wouldn't see the end of the feud, but not daring to show that before the Heads.

I believe I found the term in a Malory Towers book a long time ago.

This is the end. I hope you've all enjoyed it. Thanks very much for your comments while I've been writing.

Meanwhile, in the san, Nancy, Peggy, Bride and Tom were seated ropund the roaring fire, rubbing their hair with towels. No one would meet anyone elses eyes, and Peggy, who's short hair was rather fine, had been rubbing for ten minutes after it was dry. She looked for a sign from her sister, but Captain Nancy appeared to be sunk in thought as she stared into the fire, looking as dreamy as the Able-seaman normally did. Eventually, taking her courage in both hands, Bride spoke, rather nervously.

"Peggy?" the Amazon first mate looked up, glad of a distraction.

"What is it?" she asked.

"Will you tell me the rest of the stories you were telling me on the way here?"

So Peggy began to tell her again. Nancy was jerked out of her trance to put in a few words as well, and both Tom and Bride listened enthralled to the scenes the girls described.

"I'd love to do that." Bride breathed, as Nancy told them about indianing through Swallowdale, and climbing Kachenjunga. Even Tom had smiled as Nancy had explained about the problems of indianing wearing bright red hats.

"Well, why don't you come and stay with us in the hols, and do it?" Nancy asked, surprising everybody. Peggy stared at her.

"We don't really deserve to, do we?" Tom said. "We've been beastly."

"We've hardly been little ladies!" Nancy grinned. "We'll call it a truce. And then we'll teach you to be a pirate, and you can teach us to be gentlemen!" Tom laughed.

"Shouldn't we sign something, then?" Nancy considered.

"We'll do it tomorrow, whan the rest of the crew are here. The mate and the able-seamen have to sign as well! Will you take the word of a pirate in the menatime?"

Tom held out her hand as a reply, and the Gentleman and the Amazon Pirate shook hands, ending the most awkward half term any of them could remember.

BTW to perform a Swallow Dive, you take a running start from a high board, preferably a springboard and, as you go down, you spread your arms out at each side and slightly back, only bringing them together over your head just before you reach the water.

Thanks, Eilidh. I'm glad everyone was rescued and that the feud is over. I'm sorry to see this drabble end - it has been really great to read.

Thank you Eilidh - I've just caught up with the Amazons, Swallows and Chaletians after my Chrissy holidays. Glad to see the feud so satisfactorily squashed and pirates and gentlemen becoming allies.
