Sue was disturbed by a noise, it sounded like a thud on the roof. She couldn’t understand it, the storms from two or three weeks ago were over now. She must be imagining things. She felt chilly and stiff, she must have nodded off for a minute. She looked at the clock, she would make a cup of hot chocolate to drink while she read about the Christmas happenings at Lesley’s RCS, then she would go to bed. While she waited for the kettle to boil she thought she heard more noises – footsteps in the next room and bells jingling somewhere. Definitely an over-active imagination! She had locked up hours ago – nobody could get in. And bells - well that was just ridiculous! Drink in hand, she went back to the computer. What was that propped in front of it? It looked like a Christmas stocking. All thoughts of the RCS were forgotten, as she set to work to investigate the contents.

A bottle of Bucks Fizz – that would make breakfast a very festive meal. Some champagne truffles – Sue was sure that she could find a good home for those after dinner! A book – always a welcome present, and a new Chalet School book was even better. A fleecy scarf, with matching hat and gloves – just the thing for the chilly weather. Another book, a slim, spiral-bound volume; Sue looked closely at the cover – “To help while away the hours on your long journeys next year, with love from your Secret Santa”. That was different – she peeked inside. “Book quizzes by Róisín and others” – she might manage some of those. “Who Am I? from the CBB” – she remembered seeing the answers to some of those. “Dawn Quizzes from Gathers” – Sue suppressed a groan. “Answers” – that was all right then! She looked at the last page; “The answers will be provided in next years stocking”! Sue put that aside hastily, and went back to unpacking her stocking.

A plastic folder containing maps of the Tiernsee, Guernsey, the Golden Valley and the Swiss Alps - they would be very useful for her holidays next year. A box of delicious looking glacé fruits, very like the ones she had seen on the market the other week – she might have just one now with her hot chocolate. Was that everything? Santa had been very kind – now she knew that she hadn’t imagined the noises she had heard. There was just one little thing tucked into the toe of the stocking – it was about the right size for a tangerine. Sue felt it carefully – it wasn’t completely round so it wasn’t fruit. Sue reached down and felt something soft and slightly furry with bits sticking out – perhaps it was some kind of animal. She pulled it out and read the label – “my first elephant”. Well that was true enough – she had never had an elephant before! But the elephant looked at her in such a winsome way that Sue knew she would have to give it a good home; and she did need a companion for all her holidays next year!

Sue turned off the computer and went up to bed, with her elephant and her new book. This had certainly been a Christmas to remember.

I've already been to Australia, Miranda. Didn't you like what I left there for you?

I haven't looked yet Santa (the rest of my family is still sleeping), but I have this funny feeling that there probably won't be a fleecy scarf, Chalet quizzes, maps of Austria OR an elephant Wink Wink

Dearest Santa,

Thank you so much. You have certainly made this a Christmas to remember, and helped me through a bad couple of weeks.

Thank you so much for the drabble and all the pressies, I have loved them all.

Love

Sue
