Apologies for Joey-bashing  .

Stir-up Sunday

Joey Maynard was often referred to as “a champion butter-in”, and that was sometimes even with complete strangers. When it came to her own children her involvement was certainly most pronounced: she’d decided their personalities for them from the moment of their respective births, after all. Of course, she didn’t want to force them into anything; but if she could just give them a gentle push in the directions in which their lives were destined to go … well, what could possibly be wrong with that? She’d only be giving fate a helping hand, after all. It was too soon yet to worry about what the younger children were going to do when they went out into the big wide world, but the six eldest … ah, well now, she had a cunning plan where they were concerned; and closely involved in it was the annual making of the family Christmas pudding.

Feeding such a large family necessitated the production of a very substantial-sized pudding indeed; and on this particular year this took place, as it did in every year, on the last Sunday before Advent, with each of the many members of the Maynard clan taking their turn at stirring the mixture. That part of the proceedings over, Joey shooed everyone from the kitchen but herself and her long-time factotum Anna, whom she’d leave to finish making the pudding in a couple of minutes – but what a crucial couple of minutes they’d be! “Now,” she declared, “now for the important part. It’s time for my extra-special plan, Anna! It’s time to put my little helpers in!”

And she produced from a drawer six tiny silver items, and placed each of them carefully into the vast basin before her, smiling to herself as she so did. The ring, promising marriage within the year, was for Len. Now that should help her to make up her mind about that nice Reg Entwistle. She’d messed the poor boy about for far too long. Let her marry him and settle down on the Platz as the wife of a doctor and mother of a long family. It was what she’d been born to do, like her mother before her. Visions of a string of grandchildren danced before Joey’s eyes, and she beamed with delight.

Now the wishbone, for good luck, was for Con. Well, she was going to need it: the quiet, dreamy member of the family, she was never going to amount to very much without luck, was she? Joey doubted that Con was even able to look after herself, and wondered how on earth the middle triplet would manage once she was away from the Chalet School. Oh well, surely there wouldn’t be too much trouble that she could get into in the academic world of Oxford, would there? Anyway, that was Con sorted out. And then there was the thimble, which symbolised that the recipient would never marry. Well, of course Margot would marry in a way, but not in the conventional way. For life as a nun, in some distant part of the world, surely beckoned for the youngest and most difficult of the triplets, and hopefully this would prove it to her once and for all.

Well, that was the girls - and now for the boys! Well, first of all there was the silver coin, the finder of which would become wealthy. That was for Stephen, of course - designed to encourage him to work hard and make a success of his life. Rix and David were already both doctors, princes amongst young men, and she couldn’t run the risk of her own eldest son failing to meet expectations. That wouldn’t do at all. The fifth of the six items, the button which stood for bachelorhood, was for Charles, for she was sure that her second son was destined for the priesthood and this seemed like as good a way as any of at least starting to turn his thoughts in that direction. And, finally, the boot, representing travel, was for Mike, whom she hoped to see follow his cousin John into the Navy. Regrettably she couldn’t envision Mike as a doctor, but many naval men had already made good husbands for Chalet School girls, and she would dearly love to see her third son do the same. Maybe Lucy Peters would do for him, or perhaps Jean Morrison. She smiled at the thought. Everything was going to turn out just the way she planned.

All she had to do now was make sure that, when the pudding was served up on Christmas Day, the right person got the right charm.

Christmas Day

“Now make sure that you don’t get these bowls mixed up,” Joey instructed Anna firmly. “I’ve checked them all carefully, and it’s very important that the right person gets the right portion, remember.” She sighed happily. “Just think! As soon as Len sees that ring, she’ll know that she’s meant to say yes to Reg, and before you know it you’ll have half a dozen little Entwistles to look after! That’ll stop you from getting bored once Geoff and Phil and Claire are all at school full time!”

And, with that, she departed from the kitchen, retook her seat at the table, and waited triumphantly for her faithful handmaiden to carry the bowls into the dining room and her six eldest children to accept what fate had in store for them.

And that was when it all went wrong.

“Oh look!” Len exclaimed, as she tucked into the delicious fruity concoction with gusto. “There’s a thimble in my bit of pudding! That means I’m not going to get married, doesn’t it?” She sat up straight in her chair and spoke thoughtfully. “Well, I’ve always intended to be a languages mistress, as you all know; and this just proves that I’m destined to devote my life to teaching, just like Auntie Nell and Auntie Hilda have. I’ve been having some doubts lately, but now … well, now I’m sure! It’s obviously what’s meant to be. And I’m not going to be distracted from it. By anyone. Ever.”

I’ve got a ring,” Margot announced excitedly. “That means I’m going to get married within a year, doesn’t it! Well, so much for any ideas I might have had about …well, it just goes to show, doesn’t it!” She blushed. “You know, I haven’t wanted to say anything, but I’m sure that Hansi – you know, the odd-job man at the San -’s been looking at me a lot lately … well, after this, next time I see him I’m going to drop some heavy hints about him taking me into Interlaken to the pictures, and … are you all right, Mamma? You sound like you’re choking? You haven’t got a coin or anything from the pudding stuck in your throat, have you?”

“She can’t have – I’ve got the coin!” Charles informed the rest of the family. “And up till now I’d been thinking that maybe I was intended to do something that involved … er … in manner of speaking … poverty… oh well, never mind that now! Obviously I’m meant for a career in high finance! Who’d ever have thought it?” He looked round happily at his brothers and sisters. “How about you, Con? Have you got anything in your portion of pudding?”

“I’ve got a boot!” Con held it up in delight. “I must be going to travel! And I thought that I was the one who wouldn’t do anything very exciting with her life … well, how wrong can you be? That’s made my mind up! I’m not going straight to Oxford: not me! I’m going to take a year out and travel round the world. I can’t wait!” She laughed. “And I thought you might be the one doing that, Mike – you’ve always said you wanted to travel!”

“Oh, I still do – and I’m going to be able to do exactly what I want because I’m only ever going to have myself to worry about,” Mike said delightedly. “Look – I’ve got the button. That means I’m going to be a bachelor boy, doesn’t it? Hooray!! I’m never going to get married! That suits me down to the ground! Girls are just silly. I mean, look what Flixy’s friends are like!”

“Don’t be rude, Mike,” Stephen ordered. “And I think I’ve done the best of all. I’ve got the wishbone, and that means that I’m going to be lucky, and that’s the best thing that anyone can be. Trying hard at things is all very well, but no-one ever gets anywhere without luck, do they? You can slog your guts out and end up getting nowhere. Well, from now on I’m just going to sit back and let things happen. That’s the best way to live life, isn’t it? Don’t try to influence anything; just let it happen. What will be will be.”

Joey’s choking grew worse, and Jack sprang to his feet anxiously, rushing to her side and thumping her hard on the back. “Anna!” he called urgently. “Anna, would you bring a glass of water in here, please. Frau Doktor Maynard seems to be choking! I can’t think what the matter can be. It’s certainly nothing to do with the Christmas pudding: that’s absolutely delicious and we’ve all thoroughly enjoyed it. You did an excellent job there.”

“Oh I know,” Anna murmured to herself. “I know. It’s amazing what a little stirring can do!”
