"Uncle Jem! Uncle Jem!"

Jem Russell steadied himself just in time to avoid being knocked over by the solid, pigtailed girl who threw herself at him. "Oof! Careful, Mary-Lou, or you'll have me over! You're far too old to be throwing yourself at people."

Mary-Lou giggled, playing with one of her plaits. "Sorry, Uncle Jem! Only I was running to catch you and wasn't able to slow down in time. I didn't hurt you, did I?" she added anxiously. Jem chortled.

"Not me, my child! Now, what was it you wanted? You shouldn't be out in this cold, you know."

"I know," Mary-Lou replied airily. "I'm willing to take the- the responsibility for my actions. But truly, Uncle Jem, I wanted to ask you something about Verity-Anne. Mummy and Dad won't tell me, and when I asked Gran she just shook her head and said that it was something for grown-ups to worry about." Mary-Lou frowned. "I just wish someone would tell me what was wrong with her! She's always been so stubborn, you know, and even though she's my best friend, apart from Clem, of course, we fight sometimes. Only now she just sort of moons all the time."

Jem sighed. They'd done their best to hide what was happening from Mary-Lou, but she was an inquisitive and intelligent youngster and he wasn't surprised that he'd noticed the difference. "I think I know what's happening to her," he said slowly. "It's very rare, but I have seen one or two cases of it in my time."

Mary-Lou's eyes were very round. "Is it serious? Is she going to..."

"No! In Verity-Anne's case it's not serious at all. It's a mildish case of what we call Robin Flu."

"Robin Flu? Is that some kind of Bird Flu?"

Jem snorted. "No, you ninny! The concept of Bird Flu won't even exist for another six decades or so. No, this is something quite different. It was first discovered in Robin Humphries, although it presented very differently in her than it does in young Verity-Anne."

"In Rob?" Mary-Lou stood in wholesome awe of that young woman. "Did she moon too?"

"No; like I said it was very different for her. She was a healthy wee thing when she first arrived at the school; then, suddenly, she became quite frail and delicate. For a long time we thought she'd contracted TB, like her mother had done; there was nothing we could do to return her to her old strength. It was your Uncle Jack who finally realised it was something else entirely. He called it Authorial Character Rebranding Disorder, and we thought it might be unique to Robin."

Mary-Lou was quiet for a long moment, considering the doctor's words. "You said you thought it might be unique to Robin. Do you mean it wasn't?"

Jem nodded. "Yes. Madame de Bersac, who used to teach at the school, was very emotional as a young girl with a tendency to romanticise life; but when she grew up, she suddenly became a sensible, unimaginative person. I quickly diagnosed her with the same Disorder - it was your Auntie Jo who nicknamed it 'Robin Flu', but the name caught on."

"And now Verity-Anne has it too," Mary-Lou said thoughtfully. "Can you fix her, Uncle Jem?"

"I'm afraid not, my child." Jem sighed. "She seems to have an especially bad case. The best we can hope for is that there will be some kind of large event to make her, er, wake-up. Perhaps an avalanche, or a flood. Or it would be even better if she ran away-"

"I don't see that happening," Mary-Lou replied. "OK, Uncle Jem! I'll just have to wait patiently for her to get better. And in the mean time - I'll look after her!" She gave him a hug and quickly skipped back to her house, where she was caught by Gran and soundly scolded for leaving without permission.

For his part, Jem thought furiously as he walked briskly back home. Perhaps Mary-Lou's involvement would help to right Verity-Anne, but he had a dreadful feeling that despite her best intentions she would only make things worse.

Joey's case came on a lot more gradually, so perhaps they never did!

Thanks, this eerily makes a lot of sense. Wonder if the characters recovered once they left the books :D
