“Does anyone else feel… different this term?” asked Mary-Lou, looking around the prefect’s room.
“How do you mean?” questioned Lesley Malcolm.
“Yes, what do you mean, Mary-Lou? Different?” Hilary was just as confused as Lesley by Mary-Lou’s sudden outburst.
“Yes, yes I feel it too,” ventured Verity, “Sort of changed…”
“It’s almost as if we’re looking at people in different ways,” added Vi Lucy, “You know, seeing them differently.”
The five prefects sat in silence, contemplating their thoughts.
All of a sudden, Hilary remarked, “Did you see that new doctor at the San?”
“Oh, the one that arrived here a few days after us?” asked Vi.
“That’s the one- a rather jolly looking chap,” said Hilary.
Lesley alone was looking puzzled. “Who on earth do you mean?”
“Oh Lesley, haven’t you noticed him?” they all chorused, except Mary-Lou who was still deep in thought.
“He’s got the deepest blue eyes you could possibly imagine!” dreamt Verity, staring into mid-air.
“And thick, wavy locks of chestnut brown hair,” Hilary mused.
“And don’t forget his charming smile!” Vi was thrilled by the memory of it.
“Oh him!” Lesley realised, “Why didn’t you say so before. He’s such a dashing young man…”
“That’s exactly what I meant,” Mary-Lou declared in her bell-like tones, “It’s the doctors. That’s it, the doctors. They aren’t just for rescuing people after all!”

Thanks, Willow and Em. That was a great start. I wonder how the girls are going to get the doctors to notice them.

Over the next few weeks, the prefects changed their attitudes towards the male species. They seemed to care a little more about their appearance than usual, and were a little more accident prone.
For example, Verity was mooning along the corridor one day, perhaps thinking of the new doctor at the San, and was not paying attention to where she was going in the slightest.
“Verity, watch-” Verity walked straight into the wall. “out…” The passing girl quickly ran to fetch Matey.
Verity was knocked out cold and, because she lay still, grey and to all appearances dead, Matey was a little worried and called for a doctor.
Spurred on by Verity’s actions, the prefects, one by one, had their own ‘accidents’.
Lesley Malcolm put her feet in a bucket of ice, stood outside the door before breakfast and, in a final act of desperation, threw a bucket of cold water over head in an attempt to catch a cold. Vi Lucy planned to pull down the stationary cupboard ladder whilst Hilary was at the top carrying a large box of paper weights to attract attention. Mary-Lou meanwhile tried a much more direct approach. She took a walk outside the San, and fainted clean away in plain view of the windows. Unfortunately, none of them were successful in their attempts.

“It’s not fair!” cried Mary-Lou, “I was right outside the San as well.”
Vi, just back from the hospital wing, was not sure of the full story. “How did you get home in the end?” she asked.
“Got driven home by that beastly female receptionist,” grumbled Mary-Lou.
“Well that’s nothing!” exclaimed Hilary indignantly, “I fell from the a great height, bruised my spine and still didn’t get a doctor!”
“Yes, how did you two not get killed?” Verity pondered.
“Well, the ladder got caught on a shelf, the paper weights fell to one side and Hilary didn’t even land directly on top of me,” moaned Vi Lucy.
“And I just got a dose of the worst medicine Matey owns!” Lesley complained, “How on earth did you get a doctor, Verity? Your mishap wasn’t even planned.”
Verity fell into an idyllic daze. “He was so handsome, leaning over me like… like-”
“You didn’t even see him.”
Regardless, Verity carried on. “It was the most romantic-”
“Verity, you were out cold!”
“Well, it would have been the most the romantic moment of my life!” sighed Verity dreamily.

You are cordially invited to the Sanatorium’s Christmas ball.
Gentleman, please wear dinner jackets and cravats. Ladies, please wear evening dresses.
From 1830 hours to 0000 hours in the Main Hall, on the 12th December.
RSVP- Dr Jack Maynard, Freudesheim
We hope to see you there.

“Ooooooooh,” squealed Lesley, “A ball!”
“A ball, with doctors!” expressed Vi Lucy, in pure delight.
“Oh won’t it be so exciting!” spoke Mary-Lou, “But what are we to wear?”
Hilary sighed, “Our brown velveteens of course.”
“We will be irresistible to those dashing doctors dressed in them,” said Vi.
“Verity, as sisters-by-marriage, shall we do each others hair?” queried Mary-Lou, “It’s going to be so lovely isn’t it? Verity? Verity?”
Everyone gasped as they turned around to see Verity lying on the floor in a dead faint.

On the 12th December, the prefects’ excitement was incontrollable and they didn’t stop talking all day. However, when they walked into the Main hall, which was decked out in splendid finery with holly and mistletoe, and saw many handsome young doctors dressed in suave jackets and ties, they were speechless.
“Oh my word!” breathed Hilary, “Am I dreaming?”
“I don’t think so,” put in Vi.
Lesley said, “I hardly know where to start,” as she looked around the room in awe.
“Well come on, pull yourselves together,” came Mary-Lou’s business like tones, “Vi, you Lesley and Hilary go that way, while Verity and I go-“ she gasped in disbelieve as she caught sight of Verity chatting away to the new doctor that they had all noticed at the beginning of term. Without another word, all four sped off to join them.
“Hello there, I see you’ve been acquainted with my sister-by-marriage already, I’m Mary-Lou, head girl of the Chalet School” spoke that girl, holding out her hand to the doctor.
“And I’m Vi Lucy, second prefect. Pleased to meet you,” added Vi.
“Excuse me bu-,” Verity was not impressed with this interruption.
“And I’m Lesley Malcolm,” squawked Lesley, as she flung herself in front of the doctor.
“Girls, look over there, come on!” yelled Mary-Lou and with that they were gone, apart from Verity.
“Sorry about my friends, they’re acting so childishly,” apologised Verity, with a slight smile up at the darkly handsome doctor.
He flashed his charming smile at her. “Never mind about them, Verity.”
Verity was lost in his gaze and the room seemed to fall silent around them.

The last part! We hope you all enjoyed it! Very Happy

Hilda Annersley and Rosalie Dene were standing at the edge of the Main Hall, sipping on a light fruit punch and watching the antics of their prefects with interest.
“They seem to be enjoying their little treat, don’t they?” asked Hilda, smiling as five of the prefects stood stock still at the entrance, dumbstruck by the impact of the hall.
“Yes, I’m so glad that the staff here at the San decided to extend the invitation to our prefects for once,” agreed Rosalie, “Especially as they are all fine, mature young women.”
“Hmmm,” mused Hilda, “I’m not sure the invitation was really on those grounds, but I know that the girls will be able to resist the doctors’ advances and- Rosalie!” The Head had turned slightly pale.
“Yes Hilda?” Rosalie looked in the direction of the Head’s wavering arm. “It’s just five of them talking to that new doctor, don’t worry darling!”
Miss Annersley shook her head in disbelieve. “Why,” she murmured, “They are almost touching him… And look, they seem so, so eager and and…” For once, words failed the Head of the Chalet school.
“So grown-up Hilda?” ventured her secretary, only to find that Hilda was resting her head in her hands and wouldn’t reply. Rosalie’s eyes followed, not Mary-Lou and her giggling gang, but Verity and the handsome, gentle doctor standing with her. “Yes, that’s it, I do believe they are growing up!”
