Phil Craven’s Revenge

After the Impertinent Questions episode where Phil accuses Ruth of cheating leading to a fight with Mary-Lou and Vi.

Finally when the door closed on them, the Head dealt with Phil. Phil never told anyone what was said to her but she left the study weeping like a waterspout and had to be left at home when the rest went to church.

- The Chalet School and the Island

“I am very disappointed in you Phil,” Miss Annersley ended with. “I hope you will remember what I have said and make an effort to check your temper. You may go.”

Phil left the study without bothering to curtsey. She knew the Head would excuse her and put it down to her being distraught at being scolded.

Oh Phil was crying all right - but from sheer rage.

She couldn’t BELIEVE how the Head had blithely believed everything Mary-Lou and that silly Ruth had to say and then ignored her when she tried to speak up for herself. So much for the Head being fair.

Phil found her way to her dormitory and lay down. When Matey came to scold her she started the waterworks again and cried so piteously that Matey left her to have her cry out.

The minute she left Phil rolled over and stared at the ceiling. Her ability to cry and stop at will was a talent she was rather proud of. In fact, in years to come Phil was to go to Hollywood to teach aspiring young starlets just how it was done.

But back to the Chalet School, Phil made a decision. Mary Lou and that silly Ruth needed to be taught a lesson.

The question was how. Mary-Lou and her little gang of friends were always together and it would be difficult to get one in trouble without being seen.

Phil thought of a few ideas and dismissed them as too complicated to execute or too easy to be discovered. It had to be subtle and impossible to trace back to her.

She suddenly sat up and looked around the dormitory. Phil’s bed was second in the room next to Mary-Lou who was closest the bathroom. Ruth was on Phil’s other side. Phil normally hated having Mary-Lou so close to her – she was just SO BOSSY! But just this once it could prove useful.

Phil folded her arms behind her head and gazed at the ceiling as a gerem of an idea formed in her mind.

The next few days were quiet as the girls recovered from the big fight and Phil was properly subdued as she went from class to class. A few of her form spoke to her and she was careful to sound quiet and contrite in order not to draw too much attention to herself.

The following week the fun began.

“First bathers out!” The sound of the dormitory prefect’s strident tones cut across the room. She swept the curtains back from Phil’s little domain and was astonished to find that Phil was already gone.

“Well, that’s nice to see for a change,” she thought returning to stripping down her own bed.

Phil raced through her bath and ran back to the dorm.

Mary-Lou was taken by surprise but nonetheless raced off towards the bathroom. Ruth was third bather and as was her habit she stood by the bathroom door waiting for Mary-Lou to come out.

Phil had ten seconds. “Quickly, quickly” she muttered to herself. “Someone will see.”

***

“Where is my hair ribbon?” Mary-Lou was slightly frantic. “Vi, lend me one?”

“We aren’t supposed to borrow,” Vi said crushingly. “You know that.”

“Yes I know,” Mary-Lou said. “But I have looked everywhere. C’mon be a pal.”

“Mary-Lou, what is it?” the dorm prefect asked. “You have to hurry. Everyone else is ready.”

Mary-Lou looked round frantically. It was her last ribbon and definitely gone. In the end the dorm prefect lent her a ribbon, subjected her to a lecture and told her to go to Matey for a new one by the end of the day. Mary-Lou groaned – she knew what Matey would say.

Suddenly though standing in line behind Ruth she looked closer at her hair. “That’s my ribbon!” Mary-Lou shouted. “Why do you have my ribbon?”

Being Mary-Lou she grabbed at it. Ruth yelled and pulled back “What do you mean your ribbon? This is mine.”

“It’s mine. See the teeth marks. I chew my ribbons.” Mary-Lou said still tugging.

“Uhgg! That’s disgusting,” the dorm prefect said sternly. “And stop pulling Ruth’s hair. Why would she have your ribbon anyway?”

For once Mary-Lou was silenced. Indeed, why would Ruth have her ribbon?

For the rest of the day, Mary-Lou looked at Ruth suspiciously while Ruth attempted to ignore her and tried not to feel hurt.

Phil grinned to see them.

During the ten seconds that morning she had managed to go slip through the curtains into Mary-Lou’s cubey, grab the ribbon, slide back into her cubey and then race over to Ruth’s domain. She knew that Ruth’s drawers were always such a mess she would have no idea what was or wasn’t there.

The plan was to transfer small things of Mary-Lou’s during the morning bathing rush, using the general rush and the long thick curtains to shield her. Sooner or later she knew that Mary-Lou would recognize something of hers and ask for it back. Maybe even search Ruth’s things and find all her other stuff. And then what would she say?

The fact that Mary-Lou had somehow recognized her ribbon so quickly was a bit of a bummer but her overreaction was well worth seeing.

For the rest of the term every now and again something of Mary-Lou’s would reappear in Ruth’s domain. Each time Ruth would swear her innocence but as noone saw anyone else going into either girl’s cubey it was hard to know what to think.

Every girl in the dormitory (except one!) secretly thought that somehow Ruth went into Mary-Lou’s cubey in the morning while waiting by the bathroom doors and grabbed whatever was handy. Could it be kleptomania, they wondered.

Eventually the ‘thefts’ ended and peace came back to the dorm.

But suspicion remained. And it lasted. Even though Ruth was nominally a member of the gang, she was always in the background and said very little.

And every time something went missing, the other girls automatically went to her cubey to check first.

Even on Mary-Lou’s last day when her Head Girl badge went missing. Actually that time Ruth did it – but that’s another story.

Phil Craven’s revenge was complete.

The End

I like the idea of Phil in Hollywood, teaching starlets to cry! I'm glad she got her revenge on M-L. Will we hear about Ruth taking the Head Girl's badge?

Thanks Joyce.
