Pets Prefect at the Chalet School

Margi Winterton flounced into her chair in the prefects room and kicked the table in front of her until the other prefects looked at her.

“What’s up, Margi?” Asked the Head Girl, Minerva Carrington.

Margi huffed out a breath. “I wish pets’ passports had never been invented!”

The other prefects suppressed smiles, having heard Margi on the evils of pets’ passports many times the previous term. It was not that Margi objected to pets, indeed had someone else been appointed Pets Prefect, even she would probably have thought pets passports a good idea. But some of the younger girls had brought pets to school which had taxed even her ingenuity, and it seemed this term would be no different.

Mandy Rosomon passed the biscuit tin to Margi with the request that she “Calm down and tell us what specimens of zoology the little dears have brought us this time.”

Margi took a bourbon with thanks and ate it swiftly before beginning her tale. “It’s those new girls in the Lower Fifth, Jessie and I can’t remember the other one... Well Jessie’s got a cat and Minette the Tenth hates it! Hisses and swears like anything every time she sees it. So I asked Gaudenz-the-Younger to build a nice enclosure for Jessie’s cat, but now Gaudenz-the-Younger won’t go near the cat.”

“Why not?” Melanie Embury passed the coffee as she asked the question.

Margi looked embarrassed. “Look, this is what Gaudenz-the-Younger says, not me, right? He says it… keeps talking to him.”

“He’s gone barmy.” Asserted Meggie-Jo Bettany-Maynard-Russell. “It’s all the in-breeding. Not good, you know.”

As a rudimentary knowledge of genetics was had by all the girls there present, they did know. Which is why they looked at the prime example of in-breeding in their midst in disbelief. Being polite young ladies, they refrained from saying ‘where does that leave you then?’

“So now that other new girl, can’t remember her name, something beginning with ‘M’, she’s decided she needs a special enclosure for her duck. I ask you, whoever brought a duck to school?”

There was silence as the prefects remembered last terms Spot Supper, featuring duck a l’orange.

“Well, I suppose Gaudenz-the-Younger won’t build it though?” Offered Melanie.

“Oh no,” returned Margi, “he can’t do enough for that duck of hers. It’s as though it had hypnotised him.”

As the bell for Abendessen rang at that point, they had to postpone their conversation for a more propitious moment.

Can you name the other new girl?

Embarassed I had pictures of her with a shot glass - serves me right for skimming at work.

The only 'M' I could think of with a duck is Milly Molly Mandy...

A good giggly start to the day Laughing

Yup, I reckon it's young Millicent Margaret Amanda.

Did you know that Joyce Lankester Brisley, who wrote and illustrated the M-M-M books, was the sister of Nina K. Brisley, who illustrated all the early Chalet books?

This made me laugh so much my sides ache, Lyanne - please write more of it!

Laughing That was fun.
Something is nagging at my brain re a duck that hypnotises people, but I am never going to recall what it is. I may even be getting it confused with the penguin in The Wrong Trousers.

Oh, post them here (er, 'cause there's no prize...)

I am shocked at you Miss Di! It was a bourbon biscuit. Not being a whiskey drinker, I didn't even think of hard liqour. Though I did picture her with Louis the somethingth in her hand...

Sorry Bookwormsarah, Meerium and Joey, its not Milly Molly Mandy. I love Milly Molly Mandy too much to put her in this drabble! Joey wrote

No, I didn't know that! See, the educational side of the CBB strikes again.

Mallory Pike is from the Babysitters' Club, but I don't remember the duck in the series. She was the oldest of eight children.

The only pet duck I remember is Mortimer in The Dooleys Play Ball (Marion Renick, 1949). But Mortimer's person's name was Linda....

*suspects Matey would have been less diplomatic than Mrs. Dooley when Linda explained that Mortimer always slept on her bed....*

More, please, Lyanne.

What have ducks got to do with Pokemon? I'm completely confused.
