I don't, of course, condone the drinking of alcohol in large quantities, and I especially don't condone the drinking of large quantities of vodka and lemon through a funnel in order to impress the guy you like, as he will undoubtedly not be impressed when you are sick all over him.

'Der Kreis des Totes' was the closest translation I could get to 'Circle of Death' which is something else I don't condone... But perhaps that's a story for another day.

It had been obvious, at dinner, when Joey's eyes were gleaming and her mouth had twitched into a mischievous smile, that she had something special planned for tonight, but it was not until they were all seated in the big Salon and Joey entered with a heavy tray laden with bottles of gin that Juliet realised what exactly that plan was.

"Oh Joey," she said, with a half-laugh half-groan, "You really are taking us back to our school days now!"

"Please tell me we are not going to be play der Kries des Totes," Wanda begged. "I promised myself I'd never play it again, not after that terrible mix of beer and bourbon we drank one night - Bernhilda, you remember?"

"I do," Bernhilda shuddered, "And to this day I cannot drink schnapps! But I think Joey has something else up her sleeve." All eyes turned again to their hostess, who was grinning broadly.

"It's a new game tonight," she said, "given that this is such an - er - auspicious occasion! Our one and only Mary-Lou taught it to me - I believe it was all the rage when she was Head Girl."

"Then we must be playing 'Never Have I Ever'," Matey said smartly. "It's not new to Rosalie, either." And Rosalie was suddenly very carefully not catching her ex-Headmistress' eye.

"So what is this game, exactly?" Juliet asked hurriedly.

"That is easy." It was Marie who stepped in to explain. "You say something you have not done, and everyone who has done it drinks. So if I said, 'I have never dyed myself green', Joey would have to drink."

"Marie, you terror!" Jo exclaimed, as most of the room turned to stare at her once more. "No, I'm not going to tell you all about it! Still, I imagine there'll be all kinds of skeletons falling from cupboards as we play! Now then, ladies - who needs a drink?"

Juliet soon found herself sitting with everyone else in a rough circle, sipping a drink that was rather more gin than it was tonic - it always was, when Joey was pouring! - and slyly saying, "Never have I ever had a crush on Dr Jack." There were giggles all around as Grizel, Marie and Frieda sipped their drinks, and out right chuckles as Bill took a large gulp of hers.

"Gracious!" Joey said. "I can see I'll be keeping my husband under lock and key from now on! Now then - never have I ever brewed cider in my school locker."

Cornelia sighed loudly before taking a drink. "That sure was good cider, too," she said, "until you raided my locker, Matey."

"It was good cider even after," Matron said primly, and added quickly, "Never have I ever been caught outside after dark sans clothes." To nobody's surprise Cornelia took another drink; then, to everyone's surprise Miss Annersley went bright red, and lifted her glass to her lips.

As the game wore on Juliet managed to empty three glasses and start on a third. She'd actually quite forgotten that she and Deira O'Hagan had played spin the bottle by themselves one quiet evening in her first term as Head Girl, and she certainly had no idea how Sophie had found out about it. But as things got increasingly fuzzy-looking she couldn't help feeling like there was something... wrong. Something in Simone's movements, maybe; or something in the way Jo was talking. But she couldn't put her finger on it. Maybe if she just had another glass of something she'd be... able to... figure... it...

Juliet awoke some time later on the floor of one of Freudesheim's many bathrooms. Gosh, she'd certainly forgotten about that part of the deal! Thank Goodness Donal wasn't there to laugh at her - and, she thought as she slowly sat up, thank Goodness she'd retained her ability to sober up entirely free of hangovers. Judging by the roaring sound she could hear, Sophie had never lost her habit of snoring like a motorboat when she'd had a little too much.

Juliet made her way quietly back to the Salon and saw that everything was more or less as she had expected. Grizel was lying in the most unladylike fashion on a sofa, with Stacey inexplicably lying on top of her; the others were mostly lying flat on the floor, or propped up against a wall or armchair. Hilda, Nell, Matey, Mlle Lachenais and Rosalie were all gone - Juliet thought she dimly remembered saying goodbye to them last night, so they must have all headed back to the school. But there were four more missing bodies, and Juliet suddenly clicked as to what had been bothering her the night before.

Leaving the sleepers to her dreams, she walked softly through the pension to the kitchen. Sure enough, there they were, drinking coffee and eating crusty bread rolls. Juliet leaned against the doorframe for a moment, watching them, before opening her mouth and saying, "Never have I ever cheated at Never Have I Ever." The four in the room looked at each other and burst into laughter.

"I told you Juliet would figure out something was wrong," Simone said triumphantly. "She was always very quick."

"But I don't understand," Juliet said, addressing Joey. "Why suggest playing a drinking game if you weren't going to drink?"

"That was my idea," Frieda put in in her quiet voice. "It would not be a reunion without a proper 'night in', after all."

"As for drinking, I don't know about the others, but I haven't touched a drop since I was fourteen." Joey screwed up her face, remembering something unpleasant. "Frieda brought a bottle of her mother's rum to school-"

"-and the four of us finished it between us in one night," Marie finished. "After that we all swore we'd never drink again."

"Mais les autres wouldn't take no for an answer, sometimes, not when we were Middles," Simone sighed. "So we became very good at pretending we were drinking. That is why Joey always mixes the drinks."

"And that's why you four always had such good memories for old stories," Juliet realised. "You were actually sober through most of them."

"You won't tell anyone, will you Ju?" Joey begged. "It's such a good joke for it to have lasted this long." Juliet shook her head.

"You babies! No, I won't give you away, I promise." The four breathed a group sigh of relief, and Frieda carefully changed the subject. They chattered for a while longer about inconsequential matters before Juliet excused herself to go and find what she'd done with her handbag the night before.

Back in the Salon, everyone was still asleep, although Sophie had stopped snoring. Juliet found her handbag on top of the coffee table, and next to it was her half-empty glass from the night before. On an impulse, she picked it up and raised it in a toast. "Never have I ever broken a promise," she whispered, and drained the drink.

I must know what Miss Annersley was doing outside sans clothes. You can't leave such things up to my imagination!

This was absolutely spiffing! Trust it to be Corney who was brewing cider *and* got caught (I bet they never caught Evadne...)
