Alic Halford Smith was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford 1954-57.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I should like to convey to you the good news that two girls from the Chalet School will be joining you at the start of the Michaelmas Term. You will be as delighted with Helena and Constance Maynard as I know you were with Mary-Lou Trelawney. I remember your words after the first few weeks of term that Mary-Lou was 'the closest thing to the perfect student that the University of Oxford has ever seen'. I think you will find that Helena and Constance are superior even to Mary-Lou!

Helena (who is always known as Len - as you know, we prefer never to use a girl's given name if it can be avoided) wishes to study History and Constance (Con) will be a student of English Literature. I am sure that you will, as always, ensure that they are given the best tutors. With your famous tact, I am confident that you will be happy to aid the girls in any way possible.

As far as the practicalities are concerned, neither girl has indicated her preferred choice of college and, as you will agree, one can hardly expect them to decide without inspecting the colleges themselves! I believe they plan to come to England a few days before the start of term, so you will hear in plenty of time.

If you would like any further information about either girl, please do not hesitate to contact me or, if you prefer, Mary-Lou Trelawney who knows all about Len and Con and will be only too happy to help you in any way she can.

Yours sincerely,

Hilda Annersley

The scary thing is I was wondering if Mr Smith was being serious when he told Hilda Mary Lou was the most perfect student Oxford had ever seen or not. I wonder what he really thought of the references given and the girls themselves.

Oh to be a CS girl and to be able to choose the university you preferred and know that there wasn't a chance your application would be rejected   !!

Well, Ariel, I believe it may have been your idea in the first place  .

;) Ah, but only after you gave me the idea. If you're going to hand plot bunnies around, expect them back again!

Maybe he courted her in her youth, and has always retained a soft spot for her.
