Responses to the Maynard’s advert flooded in. It seemed that scores of highly qualified and very experienced British applicants wanted the opportunity to work with such a high profile family in a luxurious location, even though the agency had warned Joey the job was a little on the strenuous side. Apparently the mention of a nursery maid made all the difference though, and Rosa didn’t seem to mind her new title. In fact, Joey reflected, it was considerably nicer than Coadjutor.

“This one looks very promising,” Joey said, waving a letter at Jack across the Saal. “Would you like to see?”

Jack merely grunted and reached out for the letter. Joey swiftly formed a paper aeroplane and chucked it at him.

“But our children aren’t troublesome, so I don’t see why we need Nanny McPhee,” Jack muttered.

“This lady - Jo Frost….she sounds lovely too! Very experienced, been on television….” Joey enthused, completely ignoring Jack’s doubts. “Although she only seems to do short term contracts, and wants to bring a Channel 4 filming crew with her…This one’s no good, wrote a book about her former employers, we can’t have that. And she doesn’t seem to have a name either - just “Nanny”.”

Jack allowed Joey’s chatter to pass over him and concentrated on his cup of coffee. This nanny business was getting far too complicated for his liking. When he had suggested that Anna and Rosa might like some extra help he hadn’t meant it to go this far but Biddy and Hilary had employed a lovely British nanny to help them out and Joey had refused to be outdone. She had initially wanted a Norland nanny but apparently there was a waiting list, and that was only for a probationer so that plan had had to be scrapped.

“I don’t know HOW we’re going to manage for interview,” Joey said. “I can’t fly, I’m far too busy, and you simply can’t leave the San. I did ask Hilda whether she would mind, but she’s so tied up in the school, and I don’t like to ask Madge or Mollie….”

A knock at the front door interrupted her.

“Oh bother,” she exclaimed, rising from her chair. “I’ll have to get that myself.”

She fixed a smile on her face and opened the door.

“I am responding to your advertisement for a nanny,” the lady standing there said, folding her umbrella away.

“I see…..” Joey replied, looking the visitor up and down. She noted neat black hair, bright eyes and a pink and white complexion. “We did ask applicants to write to us and send their CVs as a matter of fact.”

“Nonsense,” the lady responded. “Your advert specifically requested me so here I am. Are you going to let me in or not?”

Sorry to have neglected this! Will try to finish it over Christmas.

"Oh," Joey said, somewhat taken aback. "Well do come in..."

It should be noted that this invitation was somewhat redundant as the visitor had already made her way into the hall and was peering up the stairs.

"Well, where are they?" she enquired sharply.

"Who?" Joey replied blankly.

"The children, of course," the lady replied, fixing Joey with her very blue eyes. "My charges."

"I'd really rather we started with some basic information," Joey gasped helplessly. "Perhaps your name? A brief career history? Some references? How long do you plan to stay?"

"I don't believe in giving references," the lady sniffed. "So very old-fashioned, don't you think? Quite out of date. I intend to stay until the wind changes, my name is Mary Poppins and that is all you need to know. Now, where are the children? Upstairs in the nursery I presume?"

"Er yes...." Joey responded rather faintly. "If you'd like to follow me?"

Joey started up the stairs trying to make sense of the rather extraordinary events of the past 10 minutes and hoping devoutly that the nursery was in some sort of order. Mary Poppins struck her as the sort of person who would sniff in a very meaningful manner if there was even one speck of dust on the mantel. So preoccupied was she with these thoughts that she completely failed to notice her new nanny calmly seat herself on the bannister and slide up the rail calmly behind her. Dr Maynard, crossing the hall, did notice briefly, but his mind was elsewhere and he quite forgot to mention it to his wife later that evening.

"Children!" Joey called upon reaching the top of the stairs, her golden tones echoing throughout the large house. "Come along to the nursery for a moment!"

The Maynard children were well trained to instant obedience and in no time at all were all gathered in the nursery. Mary Poppins looked at the large brood, then at Joey's still small but perfectly obvious bump and finally around the nursery.

Watched by the Maynards she proceeded to open every cupboard door, lifted the rug and finally inspected the night nursery before turning to Joey and announcing: "This will do."

Joey let out a breath she was unaware she had been holding. "Excellent. These are my three eldest girls - Len, Con and Margot."

The triplets smiled prettily at Mary Poppins, but she ignored them completely.

"Next our three singleton boys - Stephen, Charles and Michael," Joey continued.

"I hope you're an improvement on the last Michael I had charge of," Mary Poppins sniffed. "He was a terribly naughty boy."

Joey's smile became rather strained - "Mike's a bit old for childish mischief now," she said hastily. "Next our first twins - Felix and Felicity, and our singleton girl Cecily."

Mary Poppins eyed this last named suspiciously but transferred her gaze to the two small people introduced as 'the second twins, Phil and Geoff.'

Finally Joey turned to the two girls standing to one side of the Maynard brood. "Finally our 2 wards who live with us full-time - Erica, and little Claire."

Erica smiled rather nervously but Claire held out her arms and beamed a welcoming grin. Mary Poppins allowed her expression to unbend far enough that her mouth turned up at the corners.

"Now, shall I leave you to get to know each other?" Joey said brightly. "Children - I'm sure I can trust you to help Mary Poppins settle in!"

With that Joey turned, left the nursery and headed downstairs to gloat to Hilary and Biddy that her new nanny was so up to date that she didn't believe in giving references.*

"How was the journey?" Len enquired solicitously.

"Much as I expected," was Mary Poppins cryptic reply, taking off her hat and unwinding her scarf before looking around. "I shall sleep in the night nursery," she announced before picking up the bag she had placed on the floor at her feet.

"That's a very unusual bag," Con said, eyeing it warily.

"Carpet," came the reply. "Made of, not for carrying."

"I see," Con replied in a subdued tone.

Mary Poppins swept through to the night nursery trailed by Cecily, the second twins and Claire who seemed to have rather taken a fancy to her. Len glanced around the elder children left in the day nursery and sighed, before following the brood into the night nursery. Once inside Mary Poppins opened her bag.

"Why there's nothing in it!" exclaimed Cecily.

Len sprang into action at once. "I'm sure Mamma will be able to..."

"What do you mean nothing in it?" Mary Poppins exclaimed, extracting a hat stand which she stood in the corner of the room before removing her hat and hanging it up. The children watched open mouthed as she proceeded to remove a cake of soap, one starched aprons which she tied around her waist, two flannel nightgowns and one cotton one, a mirror, a toothbrush, a packet of hair pins, a bottle of scent, a small folding armchair, a box of throat lozenges, a pair of skis, a hip-flask containing a quantity of very good quality brandy, a box of handkerchief, a tape measure and a large bottle of medicine with a label bearing the legend "ONE SPOON TO BE TAKEN AT BED-TIME".

In the day nursery the elder children exchanged very meaningful looks and stole towards the door, only to hear Mary Poppins call after them.

"You weren't planning on going anywhere, were you?"

"No....of course not," Margot called back, blushing to the roots of her red-gold curls.

"Good," Mary Poppins said, emerging from the night nursery with a tape measure, "because I need to measure you all."

"But there's no need to measure us," Margot burst out. "I'm five-nine in stockinged feet, Len's five-eight, Con's a bit shorter...." she trailed off under Mary's stern gaze.

"Indeed," Mary Poppins said icily. "Helena - you are the eldest. Turn around please and stand up straight."

Mystified Len did as she was told.

"And while I measure Helena, the rest of you will line up in age order," Mary Poppins ordered. "Now...let me see. Far too responsible. Doesn't put things away. Really, Helena!"

"Let me see," Margot said, pushing Con out the way. "Tape measures don't have words!"

"Oh don't they," Mary Poppins replied. "There we are then. Read aloud."

Margot's eyes widened as she read. "HELENA MAYNARD: Far too responsible. Doesn't put things away."

"Now," Mary Poppins continued. "Constance please. Rather dreamy. Lacks tact. Margaret next I think. Nasty temper. Listens to her devil"

"But I don't anymore!" Margot interrupted.

"Extremely argumentative," Mary Poppins continued calmly.

"Now spit-spot into bed, all of you. Come on!" Mary Poppins said briskly after supper in the nursery.

"All of us?" Charles queried, the elder folk having joined the tinies in the nursery making the most of the school holidays.

"All of you. You all need sleep -we'll be having a very exciting day tomorrow. Come along now."

"Shall we tub Claire for you?" Margot asked. She had, upon reflection, decided that arguing against the enforced bedtime would be a bad idea and she had every intention of proving that tape measure wrong.

"No thank you," Mary answered. "Get yourselves ready for bed and come into the night nursery for your medicine."

"Medicine?" Margot queried before she could stop herself. "But only Papa or one of the doctors at the San every gives us medicine. Or Matey if we're at school. What is it?"

In response Mary Poppins produced a large black bottle around the neck of which was a large label bearing the legend "ONE SPOONFUL TO BE TAKEN AT BEDTIME".

"Why do I have to have medicine?" little Geoff asked. "I not ill, I not got wet today."

"Because prevention is better than cure," Mary Poppins replied. "And you should know better than t argue," she added meaningfully.

Reluctantly the children went to get undressed and were soon arrayed in the night nursery ready for their dose.

Mary Poppins held up the bottle to the light and shook it vigorously. From the pocket of her apron she produced a large spoon and proceeded to pour the thick brown liquid from the bottle.

"Claire first I think," she smiled. Claire stared back, dark eyes large in her pale face, but she obediently opened her mouth wide as Mary Poppins popped the spoon in.

"Mmmmm, lemonade!"

"Phil?"

"Treacle, yummy, yummy!"

"Geoff, next"

"Chocolate sauce! Please, please can I have some more?"

"No you may not, Geoffrey. Cecily, your turn."

"Anna's lemonade,"

"Felix,"

"Oooh. Lemon sherbert."

"Felicity,"

"Aniseed balls"

"Michael,"

"Liquorice," he said licking his lips.

"Charles,"

"Nice, ripe gooseberries,"

"Steven,"

"Blackcurrant cordial,"

"Margaret,"

"Gin...ger beer" Margot said hastily, avoiding her eldest sister's gaze.

"Constance,"

"Ooooh raspberries," Con breathed.

"Helena,"

"Whipped cream," Len blushed.

"What about you, Mary?" Margot asked saucily. "Won't you have any medicine?"

Smiling, Mary Poppins poured herself a spoonful, swallowed the mixture, licked her lips and pronounced - "rum punch".
