As promised, here is my entry for CBB's Got Talent at the recent Summer Gather. As you may or may not be aware, there are CBBers mad enough to undertake any knitting challenge. On the raffle tables alone, more ordinary offerings were joined by extermiknitting daleks, adiposes (spelling?), a knitted llama, and a Matey doll. You may also know about the exploits of the Lime Green Woman. So it wasn't entirely surprising that one of this year's gatherers had taken a dare to knit bright red woolly underpants, complete with devil's tail....

The tune is sort of a mutated version of 'The Grey Goose Has Gotten Out and Eaten All the Corn.' For the sheet music version, see MargotsDevil&theMadKnitters.jpg. The music is what was playing in my head while I was singing. It's in standard highland bagpipe scale. No idea how to transpose the written form to the key I jumped down to after verse #1.

Margot's Devil and the Mad Knitters

(Verse 1: Primly and with baroque trills)
Oh, Miss Wilson had a cello, with which she couldn't part,
'Til she gave it to a lover of great art,
Who played Telemann and Mozart with precision and with grace,
And a wondrous perspicacity of heart. (Tra, la)

(Verses 2-5: Convert to folk mode, in a key less likely to break my voice.)
Then one dark and stormy evening, when the sleet began to splat,
And a blizzard blew great drifts upon the Platz,
Margot's devil got fed up with the everlasting chill,
When he hadn't even woolly underpants. (Dah- DUM)

He could get the naughty middles to put petrol in the ink,
And ensure that Grizel's matches missed the sink,
But that kind of conflagration would be over in a wink,
With no one left to make a proper stink. (Dah- DUM)

Then he stopped short at the practice room -- recalled an evil chant,
By a demon who could make a fiddle dance.
He'd corrupt that wretched cello to play proper fiddle tunes,
'Til the knitters knit him woolly underpants. (Dah- DUM)

When the fiddle fiddled hornpipes they'd cry "Arrrr!" and swig their rum,
Whiskey for the jigs and vodka for the rants.
There'd be alcoholic fumes enough for pleasant warmth & sin,
'Til the knitters knit him wooly underpants. (Dah- DUM)

Thanks so much for posting this Kathy. I couldn't hear parts of it when you performed, so this is great!

Thanks for posting that for the benefit of those of us who couldn't make it to the gather.

Any chance of some more gather gems?

*looks hopeful*

Great to see this in its full glory and be able to pick up on all the words without background noise. I had to stifle a chortle as I'm at work!

Yes, please. Mind you, the one I have actual duplicates for has only words, though I do have some official published songbooks in my Girl Scout collection, if there are specific songs you'd like.

Glad to hear some are enjoying the nonsense. I do love Gather insanity. :D Also singalongs. Too bad Cestina's group isn't visible hereabouts.
