Margia and Joey: a reunion

#1: Margia and Joey: a reunion Author: francesnLocation: away with the faeries PostPosted: Sat Jan 22, 2005 9:12 pm

Margia puffed as she struggled up the path to Freudesheim. She was looking forward to visiting the school and Joey Maynard had volunteered to show her round. Following Margia was her husband Terence, who Margia had met touring America. A former concert pianist Margia was now a full time housewife and mother. Joey, seeing them coming up the path flung the front door wide and holding out her hands, cried, “Welcome to Freudesheim!”

Margia looked up recognising the voice. Joey’s voice had not changed in the least, but she was a little plumper than she had been and her formerly short hair was coiled over her ears in great shell-like plaits. Margia was considerably fatter, and her brown curls were cut short and streaked with grey.

“How does she do it?” Margia thought enviously. “She still doesn’t look a day over twenty-five, and that’s after having eleven children.” Joey ran lightly down the path and tucked a chummy hand though Margia’s arm.

“Come in and have some tea,” she said warmly. “Anna’s been busy making luscious cream cakes. After we’ve had a good gossip we’ll go and view the school. You must be simply dying to see it.”

She looked back over her shoulder to Terence, whose shoulders were bowed at the prospect of spending more time with his wife’s friends.

“My husband is in his study,” Joey trilled. “He’s not working today, thankfully, and I’m sure the two of you will get on wonderfully together.”

Terence perked up at hearing this. From what Margia had said Jack Maynard was an eminently sensible chap, although he may have changed after thirty years of marriage to this creature.

Settled in a comfortable chair in the salon Margia sighed. Joey rang the silver bell before taking her own seat.

“One of the children will be along with the trolley shortly,” she said airily.

“How are the all?” Margia said. “You know, Joey, you are the most hopeless correspondent.”
Joey looked affronted. “I like that!” she said in mock indignation. “You never used to reply to my letters so I stopped sending, you lazy creature.” Her face softened as she began to recount the exploits of her children.

“Len is married to Reg Enwhistle, one of the doctors here at the San, they’ve been married three years and she’s expecting her first any day now. I’m terribly excited, the first grandchild you know! She was teaching part-time at the school but once the baby’s born that will change of course. Con’s working for a newspaper in London, she’s engaged to Roger Richardson and the wedding will come off in about a year. Margot’s a nun, she read medicine at Edinburgh and took her vows three years ago. I know she plans to become a medical missionary to Africa. Stephen’s an engineer, he’s in Australia working on a big project in Queensland. He’s met a lovely girl out there and will be coming home with her for Christmas. I’m looking forward to meeting her. Charles is married and living in Manchester. He’s an accountant, goodness knows where he got his mathematical mind from!”

Margia sat back, allowing this tide of information to flow over her. “Mike’s in the Navy,” Joey continued.

“I knew he would, ever since we went to Canada on the boat and he was so fascinated by everything. Felix is training to be a doctor in London, he plans to come out to the San here once he’d finished training. Felicity’s a ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet, first season last year. Jack and I went to see her dance even though she’s only in the corps. They were doing Les Sylphides and she does look picture in white. Cecil and Phillipa are still at school here, of course and Geoff is at school in England. Cecil will be head girl or so Nancy Wilmot tells me. Hilda Annersley retired last year, as I’m sure you know and Nancy Wilmot took over. She’s been doing an absolutely splendid job.”

The trolley entered, pushed by Marie-Claire, one of the Maynard wards.

“Thank you, Marie-Claire,” Joey said. “Tell Anna we’ll bring it along to the kitchen when we’re finished.”

Marie-Claire withdrew and Margia looked at Joey questioningly.

“One of yours?” she said. “Oh, no. Well she’s a ward of ours. Only eleven of our own, but I’m still beating everyone else by miles.”

Margia smiled to herself as she sipped the tea her hostess offered. Little did Jo know.

Conversation in the study, as requested.

“So, Jack, enjoying life out here?” Terence said, awkwardly.

“Mmmm,” said Jack non-committally.

“I suppose you have to work hard,” Terence continued.

“Well large families are expensive,” Jack said.

“Tell me about it,” Terence groaned. “How many do you have?”

“Eleven. Jo likes to do things wholesale.” Jack groaned. “She’s been hinting at a twelfth, or maybe more, what with our history of multiples.”

Terence nodded sympathetically.

“Still,” Jack brightened up, “it keeps her quiet and happy. So how many do you have, old chap?”

Terence looked out the window fixedly.

“Just the fifteen,” he said nonchalantly.

“Now let’s pop over to the school. We can go through the garden and slip through the side gate, it’s so tiresome going round by the road.” Joey said, after returning the tea trolley to Anna in the kitchen.

Margia heaved herself out of the chair and followed Joey through the French windows into the garden. She gazed at the view enviously. Joey came back to join her and for a few moments both women admired the scenery. Eventually Margia started off towards the hedge that divided the school grounds from Freudesheim.

“Oh, what a lovely rose garden!” she exclaimed.

“Oh yes,” Joey laughed. “That, my dear, was once a cabbage patch.”

“No!” Margia said in surprise.

“Oh yes,” Joey nodded vigourously. “We turned it into a rose garden the year after we arrived. Of course in the winter they need to be bundled up in sacking and straw to protect them from the frost. They look like a bunch of little old women.”

Margia giggled at the thought. They continued their walk in silence, although Margia’s eyes grew round as she gazed at the extent of the Chalet School buildings. Recent years had seen the extension of the science facilities to a brand new purpose built science block. The art block had been rebuilt and the swimming pool covered over. Wooden passages linked the buildings to allow access in the winter when snow isolated the school and blizzards were common. Joey entered through the front door and drew Margia into the spacious front hall with the grand staircase. Standing in the middle she planted her hands on her hips and demanded, “Now where would you like to see first?”

Margia stared round in amazement. “I don’t know,” she said. “Wherever you think is best to start I suppose.”

“OK,” Jo said cheerfully, “we’ll start with the Hall. You’ll love the piano.”

“Oh,” Margia said, blushing. “I don’t play anymore.” “Whyever not?!” Joey exclaimed in surprise. “In all the history of the school we only ever had one girl to touch you and that was Nina Rutherford.”

“I don’t have the time,” Margia sighed. “I’d love to play again but life is just so frantic. You just can’t get the help these days.”

“Oh I know,” Joey said, sypathetically. “I’m so lucky to have Anna and Rosli, and of course the children are trained to be helpful.”

“Terence and I simply can’t afford a nanny, much as we would like one, and our house isn’t big enough as it is, unlike Freudesheim.”

Joey gurgled in delight. “My dear, Freudesheim was a very select pension!” Margia gaped at her in amazement.

“It’s true,” Jo said. “When we arrived it had twelve bathrooms.”

“Good heavens,” Mariga said, thunderstruck.

“Anyway,” Joey said, “here’s the hall. The Honours Boards are at the far end. We’ll have a dekko at those and then go to the Speisaal.”

“Do you still have French, German and English days?” Margia asked as they crossed the hall. “

Oh yes,” Joey said. “We still take large numbers of continental girls. Of course the daughters of Old Girls come to us well-trained but we still have struggles with new girls.”

Margia thought guiltily of her own girls who certainly weren’t trilingual, then banished the thought from her mind.

this is holiday time so jo can't find out in front of the entire school - but if it wasn't jo couldn't meet the family Smile

Having viewed the lower floors Margia and Joey climbed the stairs to look at the dormitories.

“This is Gentian,” Joey said, ushering Margia in.

Margia exlaimed in delight as she saw at the pretty white curtains sprinkled with blue flowers. She peered into one of the little cubicles and like what she saw. The bed was covered in a counterpane that matched the curtains. By the side of the bed was a bureau with numerous drawers and a pretty rug decorated the floor. At the end of the bed was a wicker chair.

“Oh this takes me back,” she sighed. “Amy and Elisaveta would love this.”

“Your girls?” enquired Joey.“Errr….yes,” Margia said.

“Well, two of them,” she added mentally.
“Are you going to send them here?” Jo said, delightedly.

“If Nancy has space for them I certainly would like them to come here.”

“Oh I’m sure we can find room for them,” Joey said airily.

Margia, however, was not so sure athough she said nothing for the time being and followed Joey downstairs.

Joey ushered Margia outside. “We’ll go and see the art and design rooms next, then the swimming pool before we go up to see the chapels we built for the Coming-of-Age. After that we’ll pop over and see Nancy Wilmot. I’m sure she’ll have room for your girls next term.”

Margia acquiesced and they set out to finish their tour of the school. She was very impressed by the facilities offered by the school and this made up her mind to send the girls here as soon as she could.

Three days later, Jo and Nancy made the promised visit to Margia. She met them on the steps of the rented chalet.

“Come along,” she said cheerfully. “Terence has taken the kids down to the lake.”

The three ladies walked slowly down to the crowded shore of the lake. Margia waved to Terence who was reclining under a sunshade.

“Oh goody, he’s reserved some deckchairs for us,” Margia said. “It’s so busy down here, not like the Tiernsee.”

“Very busy,” Nancy agreed. “We bring the school down for boating in the summer but only in the evenings when it’s cooler and less crowded.”

“Oh, of course, you have the swimming pool now!” Margia said. “You can swim all year round. The girls must enjoy it.”

“Oh they do,” Nancy laughed. “Although some do grumble at swimming in the winter!”

“Brrrrrr,” Joey said. “The very thought makes me feel chilly.”

“In this heat?” Nancy said. They had reached the shore by this time and were weaving their way through deck chairs to join Margia’s husband. They saw a baby in a sunsuit lying on a mat and two toddlers playing in the sand.

“Girls,” Margia said, with a twinkle in her eye. “It’s time to meet the rest of the family.” She produced a whistle from her bag and blew a short shrill blast. At once children from all areas of the beach got up and ran towards her. They gathered round Margia who smiled at her friends. Nancy looked shocked. Joey looked furious.

“Margia,” she said stonily. “Are all these yours?”

“Why yes, Jo,” Margia said innocently.

Joey looked around at the tanned smiling faces. She did a quick headcount and turned to Margia.

“Fifteen?” she asked.

“That would be right,” Margia agreed. “Let me introduce them all.”

By now Nancy had recovered herself sufficiently to say in a dignified manner, “That would be lovely, Margia.”

Margia went round, pointing to her children as she named them. “Steven….. Amy….. Daniel….. Trevor… Elisaveta …. Richard….. Alice and Alan….. James….Evadne, Cornelia, Elsie and Illonka…Margaret... and baby Violet.”

“Quads?” Joey choked. “Fifteen?” She crumpled onto the sand and lay still, grey and to all appearances……

I can just see Margia introducing them in dribs and drabs till Jo loses count.

I may be loosing my ability to count beyond 10, but I'm sure that there are only 14 children there...has Joey purloined one? Very Happy I love this, it's great that none of them are called Josephine, would love to find out that they have Marie, Simone and Frieda for some of the middle names!! Laughing Margia is soooo good at getting one over on Joey.

“I should have prepared her,” Margia sobbed. “It’s all my fault.”

“Not at all, old girl,” Terence said. “You weren’t to know she had a heart condition.”

“But she was always delicate,” Margia howled. “I should have remembered. I only wanted to give her a little surprise.”

“There, there,” he said, rubbing her back in an attempt to calm her.

“Oh it’s just so awful,” Margia said, lowering herself gently into the chair. “All her children, motherless.”

“Well if you go on like this, ours will be too,” Terence said. “You mustn’t be upset. Remember….”

“Yes, I know,” Margia sighed, looking down at her rounded stomach. “We’ll call it Josephine. She would have liked that.”
