Madge Russell was angry. Jem could see all the early warning signs with the way she was slamming cups on the table, muttering under her breath.
“That women,” she hissed. “That woman has a lot to answer for. Writers,” Madge sniffed with derision. “I could write far more realistically than she could. I don’t know where she gets off. Defaming perfectly respectable people the way she did. Making us out to being these awful horrible people. I told her no one would agree with what she said. But do you think she would listen to me. I don’t think so and now. And now…” Madge seem to choke on the last words, “They say we are the worse parents out of everyone. Can you believe it.”
Jem grinned, “I take it you’ve been reading it again.”

Madge’s annoyance started to slip away. She had loved Jem from the start. His cheeky grin and sense of humour had made her laugh. And they always had such fun together, more so than anyone ever acknowledge, if they even realized. She was always labelled the responsible one. The caretaker. That, 'Nice sweet woman Lady Russell'. And now this. Madge’s face darkened with the memory.
“Yes I have,” she admitted. “I can’t help myself. It’s not my fault, though,” she added in an injured voice, “That woman started it all.”
“That woman has been dead for well over 25 years now, don’t you think it’s time you dropped this vendetta asked Jem reasonably.
"I thought I had," said Madge, “but then I found this.” Madge tossed a parcel of papers over to Jem.
“Hmmm,” said Jem thoughtfully, “A recovering alcoholic. Well if you don’t stop insisting on hiding the vodka bottle in the cereal box Madge," said Jem humorously pulling a half empty vodka bottle from the cereal box.
“Jem,” said Madge half laughing.
“Well, if fictional characters can’t do what they want when they want who can. I think this writer is a bit too presumptuous in calling you a recovering alcoholic. If she could see you now,” teased Jem with a cheeky look.
“Hmph,” snorted Madge, who was starting to relax, “You should see what they say about you. They think your cross dresser, who only married me cos you liked the uniform.”
“Well I do like a bit of fresh air blowing around my privates,” said Jem with twinkle in his eye.
Madge didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, for there was Jem wearing the old flame and brown uniform.
"Jem," said Madge scandalized. "Will you take that thing off? What will the children say?"
"Say about what?" asked a fresh voice.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm having a lot fun writing this
"Say about what?" asked a fresh voice.
"Me in a dress,” said Jem with a grin as he reverted back to his usual clothes. David sat down,
“Been reading it again Mum,” he asked. “I wouldn’t worry about it to much.”
“How can you say that,” asked Madge almost in tears. “Nobody likes me because of it and I’m nothing like how they portray me.”
“No,” laughed David, “She certainly made the mistake in giving Margot your temper. You’re the one that likes throwing things around not her.” David ducked as his Mother started throwing pieces of toast at him.
“Get that into you. You always did come out with rot when you’re hungry.”
David chuckled, and starting eating. “Well, she is the most unathletic, shy retiring person I’ve met and look how she was portrayed. A thoroughly nasty character who bullied, blackmailed and finally nearly killed someone and then just because she didn’t know how to end her character she turned her into a Nun and she she’s not even a Catholic.”
“I know,” nodded his Mother with sympathy, ”I had Margot in tears over all that several times. The poor girl and she gets vilified all the time because of it. The whole ‘you only got to stay at the Chalet School because your Joey Maynard’s daughter.’ Anyway, you’re trying to distract me.”
David grinned. It was the same grin his father had. “Well, I hardly rated a mention with her,” said David cheerfully, “and then later others only wrote about me if I fell in love with a Chalet School girl or if I was gay and you had issues with it. How would like those storylines?”
“Well, at least everyone loves you for it and you gain so much sympathy over it all,” said his mother persuasively, “Think of all those girls making you the object of their dreams and sympathies.”
“What use is that to me when they have me batting for the other side.” exclaimed David. “It would be nice to be described as this sexy hunk who half the girls chase after,” and David gave a roguish grin.
“Don’t be ridiculous dear,” said his Mother smiling, "That role always falls to your father and Jack Maynard, much to Joey’s disgust.” She added with obvious pleasure and the three shrieked with laughter.

All of them had suffered at different time with Joey’s hero worship of ‘that writer, EBD.’ And Joey held everything of EBD with such reverence. She insisted of having a shrine to her and was personally affronted when anyone deviated from EBD’s writings.
“She’s the author,” she would say scandalized at the mere suggestion that anyone would adre change what EBD wrote.
“Anyway, why didn’t you take your case to EBD instead of just moaning about?” asked David curiously. Jem rolled his eyes to the heavens and started changing his outfit into a beautiful saxe blue dress.
“I did,” said Madge with a sigh, “for all the good it did me. Jem, gentian blue not Saxe.”
“I like Saxe better,” grumbled Jem
“I know dear but EBD insisted. Just be grateful it wasn’t lime green and cream like Joey wanted. Madge chuckled and the conversation was momentarily diverted. “It’s the only time I’ve ever seen Joey upset with EBD.” She lapsed into the memory before giving herself a mental shake.
“She only made me worse. When I pointed out it would be nice for Jem and I to run the Swiss San and live near the school as we had in Tyrol and Guernsey and England, as I was the owner, she got really snooty with me and said 'Joey Maynard was the more popular character and she would not cut Jo out of the story.' In vain I argued, that Joey did not need to be cut out that I only wanted more storylines. Well she finally she got her revenge and sent your father and I to Australia and if that wasn’t injury enough we were forced to take Sybil and Josette with us and deny their long term dreams. The fans were not happy and they’ve complained about it ever since.”

“I wouldn’t worry about it,” said Sybil walking into the room with a smile. “You did save me from doing that ghastly embroidery course EBD wanted me to do. ‘Such a ladylike profession,’” mimicked Sybil. Sybil sat down. “Pass the toast Dave.
"Still having trouble with the colour Dad,” she inquired.
“I’m protesting,” said Jem said shortly. Sybil smothered a grin. The uniform colour was a sore point with her Dad. The only thing that upset his equilibrium. A Fashion Designer by trade, EBD had turned him into a doctor, ‘So much more respectable’, but she did have a point it did keep Jem in the story far longer than being a fashion designer would have done. Really how often could you change the style of uniform and you couldn’t set up the studio on the Sonnalpe the way you could a Hospital and make it sound remotely plausible.
"How’s the modelling going, dear?" asked Madge.
"Busy," sighed Sybil, "but I love doing it." Sybil was one of the most beautiful of girls ever to attend the Chalet School and had a lifelong dream to be a model. Her father had used her to model a lot of his designs, until she turned a professional once she left school.
“Why don’t you make a stand now?” asked David changing the topic. He had been reading the latest stories from websites. "State your argument. Fight back. Tell the world your story."
“Hmm,” said Madge with that light in her eyes, showing she was ready to do battle, “that’s not a bad idea.”
“You could get all the others involved," added Jem mischievously, “I’m sure Mary Lou would love to have someone make a stand on her behalf.” The four shrieked with laughter. The said Mary Lou was a shy girl, terrified of everything. EBD has pushed her forward admittedly it was to help her to overcome her fears of people and enable her to stand up for herself, but it only made her worse and the worse she got at standing up for herself the more EBD pushed her. She spent most her time pottering around in her garden in the most remote part of Yorkshire, refusing to have anything to do with anyone remotely related to the Chalet School.
“Maybe not,” said Madge with an irrepressible twinkle in her eye, “but we can do the whole thing on line so she doesn’t have to see anyone at all.”
“Who else would you get?” asked Sybil curiously.

“Well, there’s Grizel for a start,” began Madge, “EBD had the gall to give her the unfortunate name, Grizel and then refused to explain how the name was pronounced until the 50th book. She had to put up with being known as Grizzle for years. And her poor parents, especially her step mother, just because EBD had been reading too many Grimm fairy tales, her step mother was turned into the wicked step mother. And Grizel all she wanted to do was just have a little fun, EBD started to make her worse. She needed a ‘bad’ girl and poor Grizel copped it. It couldn’t be the Germans cos of the whole war thing and people would say she was prejudice. But do you think she could ever truly reform. That poor girl just when she had thought she was allowed to, she had to be the teacher no one liked, well mistress then,” said Madge at Sybil’s aside,
“There all called mistresses mum.”
“And even when she promised she would come back reformed EBD broke her promise,” continued Madge, “She did everything to stop her from having a good life. Not allowed to do games, like she wanted and was never allowed to be a strong character that made the best of it, no she had to be turned into the weak, nasty one. Poor girl,” sighed Madge.

“Its not all bad,” said Grizel suddenly appearing at the breakfast. “A few have written some really good stories about me since. They’re a lot more sympathetic than some of the ones about Joey.” She smiled, “Though it’s nice seeing you raise the flag in my defence Madge.”
She turned to Jem, “Still protesting Jem,” she asked, “No white flag yet?”
Jem shook his head. “Never,” he said. “It’ll be Saxe blue to the bitter end.”
“Well at least you got more of a story line than I ever did and your own book or two,” said an angry voice from beside Grizel. “The most I ever got was a few lines here or there and then to top it all off that woman kicked me out of the series completely. First she refused to write a book the term I was Head Girl and then she made me leave school and wouldn’t give a reason. Everyone was asking why. And the reason she gave me was she had changed her mind and wanted to put you as Head Girl. Then to top it all off she killed off my husband and sent me off to Canada, where no one hears from me again. How would you like that and at least people still write about you. There's only been the odd story or two about me.” And a tear slid down her cheek.

“But your still a much loved character Bette,” said Madge persuasively. “I don’t think I’ve ever read a bad word about you or about any of the other continental girls.”
“You should hear Marie on the subject,” laughed Grizel, “She was always described as being as great a favourite as Joey and as strong a leader and yet rarely rate a mention. No wonder Simone always acted the way she did. It was the only way EBD would keep her in the book. She was the polar opposite to Jo and wasn’t ‘Joey wonderful with her,’” mimicked Grizel.
“Well, she did get a lot of fun playing that role,” laughed Madge.
“What do you mean,” asked Sybil curiously.
“Simone never took the role seriously,” explained Jem. “She would ham it up, playing it the most melodramatic way possible. I don’t think EBD knew quite how to take it all. She had all of us in hysterics, wiping away imaginary tears, falling into hysteric at Joey’s feet, saying ‘Joey you’re my life, my one true friend etc,’ until Jo didn’t know where to look or how to act. In the end EBD couldn’t take it so she turned her into someone so sensible and unimaginative. From thinking ‘Plato looked romantic’ to being told she was so unimaginative that only she could see if Frank really was in love with Phoebe; it was one extreme to the other. And of course it was all due to THE CHALET SCHOOL.” Jem’s inflection at that had them all laughing.
“Well it could have been worse,” said Simone. “I had a lot of fun playing that and it was a lot better than the whole ‘You’re too sweet to stay single’ or ‘You don’t have a real family because you only have one child thing.’ That really got my goat. I finally gave EBD a piece of my mind after that and of course she tended to drop me out of the story after that and Tessa didn’t really rate much of a mention either,” she added reflectively.

“Well, that were more than my children got,” said Marie Von Eschenau. “Josefa rated even less of a mention than Tessa. She started off on holidays in Yorkshire with us and then was mentioned as being in Mary Lou’s form when she first started and then got completely ignored, and I was the only one of the quartet not to be visited when Joey moved to Switzerland.”
“Well she couldn’t visit everyone on the way. It wouldn’t have been realistic,” pointed out Simone.
“I know that,” said Marie, “but how many times did they go to Tyrol for holiday. We lived there,” she almost yelled.
“By the way how’s the modelling going Sybs?” asked Marie conversationally. Everyone cracked up laughing. Marie’s sudden mood swings got every one laughing. Joey’s continual hogging of the limelight or EBD’s intent focus of her to the detriment almost of ever other character had never impressed her. And it was always funny watching Marie on her soapbox about it.
“Its good thanks,” said Sybs grinning. Marie had been the one to suggest modelling to her, as she and her elder sister Wanda had been huge on the European catwalk circuit. It had always been a bone of contention with EBD.
“Didn’t anyone succeed in subduing EBD?” questioned Bette.
"Only two that I can recall said Madge thinking about it. “What about you Jem?”
“Possibly a third, though EBD left enough innuendos that have plagued her ever since,” said Jem after some thought. “Who were they?” Asked David curiously.

I'm so excited I have just worked out how to say I'm doing an update. Yay!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

“I would like to announce it once and for all, I am not GAY,” roared Nancy Wilmont walking into the room.
Kathie Ferrars trailed in after.
“But Nancy,” she said in mock seriousness. “You are my beloved, myone true love. You’re my life. Whom else can I be ‘great friends’ with?” Nancy sighed. “Being described as ‘great friends’ does not me I like you romantically Kathie."
"But you were so upset when I had appendicitis said Kathie gently.
“Kathie,” said Nancy, her tone of voice showing her patience was wearing thin, “and I have been over this a million times. Please, stop following me around like this. People are getting ideas.”
“I know,” said David with a grin. “You have reams of stories written about this.”
“I know,” said Kathie, with a mock theatrical sigh, “and I’m the one always described as the neurotic one. Hi David.”
Kathie sat down at the table next to David. It was an ill concealed secret that David Russell and Kathie Ferrars had fallen for each other from the word go but EBD was horrified,
“He’s a year younger than she is,” she said scandalized and when Nancy tried to become head of the Chalet School, and oust Hilda Annersley, EBD got her revenge on both of them. Nancy a quiet, serious girl was devastated by it all whereas Kathie always had a sense of humour and all she would say was,
“You’ve got to roll with the punches. In the meantime have a bit of fun and set those plot bunnies loose.”
“I certainly will,” said David with a suggestive wink. “Maybe a threesome or two.”
Everyone was convulsed at Nancy’s face at that. She was always tended to take everything seriously.
“David,” said Kathie shaking her head, “it’s not going to happen, I don’t believe in sharing.”
“It doesn't always work," warned Marie, "I know Eigen and I certainly tried setting those plot bunnies loose. But it backfired and someone ended up pairing him with Joey. And he can't stand her. Everyone has me nicely married off to the local Baron and he thinks he’s God’s gift to women and if that’s not enough nobody thinks it creepy that he falls in love with me at 16 and I’m stuck getting married at 18, but poor Len. That’s just too terrible for words.”
“I know,” soothed Madge, “but according to EBD that was the best compliment she could give anyone, that they find a nice respectable man and marry them off.”
“Couldn’t she have chosen better? Eigen was gorgeous, all those rippling muscles, that bronzed tan,” said Marie.
She was still madly in love with her husband Eigen despite the fact EBD didn’t believe it would work due to the class differences and almost completely wrote her out of the books after that. Even when she was in a book she barely rated a mention.
“I don’t think she liked the fact you stood up to Joey,” said Jem with a smile. “You were almost as popular as she was, and she couldn’t handle it.”

“So if Nancy was the possible third who were the other two,” asked Simone interested.
“Have a guess,” said Madge with a smile. “Who’s role was Nancy given?”
“Miss Annersley,” replied Bette; “she managed to stay Head far longer than anyone else.”
“You were pushed to the outskirts, she killed off Mademoiselle LePattre and Hilda took over and held on despite being nearly written out of the book not once but twice.”
“Miss Bubb?” asked Sybil.
Madge nodded. “Hilda and EBD had a huge argument back during the war. Jeanne de Lachenais, Nell Wilson and Dollie Edwards were all involved and EBD got her revenge on all four. They had thought that if they banded together and stood up to EBD united then EBD would have to do what they asked, but EBD refused to listen and turned around and wrote one of her more popular book in the series. She won. Nell Wilson capitulated first and Dollie and Jeanne soon followed. Only Hilda held out and she garnered EBD’s respect, so much so she held onto being Head, even though it did mean she and Nell ended up sharing the role. Dollie was later made Head of Glendower House and Jeanne Senior Mistress, but,” added Madge softly, “none of them really won although they were allowed to come back EBD had the upper hand. Dollie and Jeanne rarely rated a mention after that. Dollie was pretty effectively written out, shunted off to Glendower House. EBD promised to write a book about it but everyone knew she wouldn’t. Jeanne was rarely mentioned except when they started talking about foundation stones and Nell was put in charge of St Mildred’s. She came off slightly better than the others, but that was her reward for capitulating first. Initially it did look like she had been reinstated but Nell soon realized that EBD was lulling her into a false sense of security.”
“St Mildred’s,” said Grizel, snapping her fingers. “EBD moved it back next to the school proper but it still remained separate.”
Madge nodded, “That’s when Nell knew EBD had never really forgiven her and she had been played for a fool. She felt awful. The others only capitulated because she led and she let Hilda down. Their relationship was never the same after that.”

“How did Hilda win though?” asked Sybil.
She couldn’t imagine Hilda not beating EBD. She was too much in awe of that lady.
“EBD realized she was right and Miss Bubb let her down. EBD soon realized very early on that Miss Bubb would never be as popular as Hilda. Matey helped there.”
“Matey!” exclaimed Marie.
“Yes,” said Jem taking up the tale. “Matey had been gently disapproving of her. She and Madge insinuated that Miss Bubb wasn’t all she could be and the others all soon started to imagine the worst and reacted accordingly.”
“Sheep,” said Madge with a smile. Her smile faded, "The problem was EBD soon learnt that herself. With Miss Bubb she made all the changes she wanted, all the changes Hilda and the others refused to do. But it backfired,” continued Madge, “Everyone revolted, she kept me well out, first by ensuring I was pregnant with Ailie-she knew I was unimpressed by not being brought back-and secondly with the accident with Josette and ensured I could never leave Josette, by making her life hang in the balance. Jo had never really like Sybil. I think she saw Sybil could usurp her role in the books and she would be forced to fade to the background and so she started whispering in EBD’s ear. EBD of course listened to Joey. Joey idolised her. And EBD ensured Joey played the hero and got Nell Wilson back.”
The others looked stunned.
“Oh she’s very clever. She manipulated everyone beautifully that term and made all the changes she wanted after that very subtly. The school remained extremely conservative, which was especially noticed in the later books. In Mystery the girls got to go to the cinema. That was unheard of in the latter books. Country dancing or paper games was all they were allowed to do. They seemed to do a lot more in the earlier ones.”
“We did,” said Grizel with a smile.
“EBD’s response to the revolt was that thorough nobody had the heart to stand up to her, punishment for it was too swift and brutal. And she ensured she brought in whole new characters rather than use any others. I know Hilda appreciated you never took over role as Head,” said Jem kindly, “even though you were offered and you had helped run the Annexe, and were in charge of music so it would have been believable.”
“She got her revenge though,” said Grizel ruefully. “After I refused Hilda’s role she turned me into a nasty Mistress and finally got rid of me. At least Hilda helped. Made sure I was written out better than I could have been.”
"So did Biddy," added Simone, "she really pushed EBD to write that you were changed and a better person. Jo was all for a huge fight, but Biddy was pretty persuasive.”
"I know," said Grizel, "It was pretty nice of her. It helped that EBD really liked her, despite Jo’s nose being out of joint and kept her as a popular Mistress for years and kept her on even when she was married.”

“So how did Hilda win? And why did Nell capitulate? She always seemed to be such a strong character,” asked Sybil frustrated.
"Firstly, Nell Wilson always struggled with Hilda being made Head before her and EBD could give her that with Hilda in hors de combat. Even the fans have all commented on that. EBD had never seen Nell Wilson as a Head type person; strong character and very popular but never had it in her as the Head. I think EBD liked to use her in all the adventure scenarios and could never picture as the sympathetic problem solver. Nell Wilson disagreed and remained disgruntled about her ever since. EBD offered the one thing Nell Wilson would capitulate for: Headship,” explained Madge.
“The problem with Hilda, she was too popular," continued Jem, "the fans were heartbroken over her potential demise. Please bring her back they cried. Eventually she had no choice."
"I think also she was a little scared of her sarcastic tongue.” Madge started giggling. “After making her that way to subdue the girls, Hilda used it on every one.”
“She could take the skin off you,” said Sybil feelingly, having been a victim of Hilda’s tongue in her early school years.
"Well she used it on EBD too and completely intimidated her at times too. I almost felt sorry for EBD. When Hilda got going, nobody was safe,” said Madge reflectively.

"Now Madge," said a gentle sarcastic voice.
“Hilda you can come in only if you sit down and stop being sarcastic,” ordered Madge.
Hilda closed her eyes and reopened them
“Madge,” she said, “it not Can”
“it’s May,” chorused everyone in the room, and they all cracked up laughing.
Nancy started slinking out of the room. She had been a proud, ambitious girl who had thought EBD was truly going to make her Head. She was never truly accepted by the older staff. First Matey and then Joey had pulled her aside, showing her how much she couldn’t cut it. She had never forgiven EBD for using her like that.
“Nancy,” said Madge gently, “it’s time you got past all of it. You are one of the most popular characters.”
"Humph," snorted Nancy.
“Nancy, what do you expect, only if we united did we succeed against EBD and when you turned, you lose trust on both sides.”
Nancy stalked out of the room nose in the air.
“Oh well you can’t win them all,” said Madge with a sigh.
“So if Hilda won,” questioned Kathie, “why make Nancy Head for a term.”
“It was to show me that she still had the power,” explained Hilda, “but it didn’t quite work. She had bought in a whole new group of Mistresses and no one really cared the way we did in the old days. The fans had a lot more say. They had started a Fan Club. Now they write new stories and all have different favourite characters. Back in the Dark Ages, all the Mistresses were described as sarcastic or with peppery tempers, but now almost everyone is described as being sports, easy going, but you can’t take liberties with. It’s different," said Hilda, "She still plays favourites and you and Nancy were and still are with fans."
Kathie nodded, “I guess that’s why she never wrote me out of the series,” she said reflectively, “I know she didn’t like David and I being together.”
“She lost a lot her fight towards the end,” said Madge softly, “but a lot of the fans drabbles are based on innuendos she wrote, or punishments she gave out, like you and Nancy and Jem and I taking the girls to Australia and Sybil not doing her embroidery course. EBD did make a lot of mistakes in her books but these are usually brushed aside as EBDisms or drabbles are written about them.”
"So," said David, "If Nancy was potentially the third, not that I can see it Dad, and Hilda was the second one then who was the first?"
"Can’t you guess David," said Kathie, "Even I know this one."

“Madge Bettany,” said a woman stalking into the room her eyes glinting. "What do you think your doing? Joey is heartbroken over this meeting. She said EBD would be horrified.”
“Oh dry up,” said Madge impatiently, “you may have subdued EBD but that doesn’t work with me.”
Matey started laughing, “but it’s such fun playing that role,” she guffawed.
“Matey,” said David stunned.
“Oh yes,” said Madge, “it caused one of the most notorious EBDisms, in the entire series. There were at least two Matrons in the Dark Ages that were interchangeably called Matey: Matron Gould and Matron Lloyd. Both Matrons wanted to reign supreme and both fought for the role. After the previous Matron EBD wrote about in Princess, she knew she had to write a stronger Matron and these two came along. Both wanted to become the ‘beloved Matey’ and Matron Lloyd won. She could glint with the best of them. Even EBD was intimidated. Too intimidated to write her out, especially as Joey loved and adored her. I’ve always wondered why she did,” said Madge curiously.
“Sybil, Simone, Bette, Grizel and Kathie all started giggling wildly. They all knew Matey’s secret. It was one of the best kept secrets at the school.
Madge, Jem and David stared at them,
“what is it?” asked Jem.
“It’s her patent doses,” explained Sybil still giggling madly.
"What getting dosed every time you’re a bit excited?" asked Madge flabbergasted. “Stop giggling like a hyena Sybil and talk sense.”
"Matey put chocolate in the milk, that’s why everyone liked them so much," she explained, "You know what a sweet tooth Auntie Jo has, she adored Matey, that’s why she collapsed as often as she did, she got chocolate flavoured milk out of it. Margot and Len weren’t much better.”
“Matey,” exclaimed Madge swinging to look at the woman. “Did EBD ever work it out?”
She asked scarcely believing what she was hearing. Matey smiled complacently,
“Not at all and when Joey threatened to tell, I told her she would never get another dose again in milk, but would end up with cod liver oil instead. That was the downfall of Matron Gould. When Jo came back to teach that first term after leaving school, the staff egged Matron Gould on to dose Jo with something nasty and she complained bitterly to EBD and so I ended up winning. I always knew Jo was the secret to EBD. Get her on your side, and your laughing.”
“But couldn’t Jo get rid of you after that?” asked Kathie.
Matey shook her head. “She couldn’t get hold of Belgium chocolate the way I could and certainly not during the War.”
“How did you?” asked Hilda stunned at what she was hearing.
“I have my ways,” said Matey smiling sweetly.
“No wonder so many girls needed the dentist,” said Jem.

“I am baffled by one thing,” announced Kathie quietly, “If getting Jo on your side was a way of getting EBD on your side and if Jo was jealous of anyone who would usurp her place in the books, how come Mary Lou was such a huge character?”
“Ah that’s the question,” said Hilda, “I never did find the answer to that. Madge?” She asked turning.
“Do you know?” Madge nodded. “I think it’s partly because she never wanted the role. She was so shy and retiring. You remember Grizel what she was like her first term at the school. You could hardly get her to say boo to a goose. Her Gran had intimidated her into submission and pushed her into the story. She was an old crony of EBD and wanted EBD to help her become more outgoing. It was also a way to make Joey look good. Think of all those caring scenes she was in.”
Grizel nodded. “That was also why Joey didn’t like Verity,” she said, “she failed miserably with her. Verity would always go her own way, do what she wanted and that really annoyed Jo.”
“Well Gran got involved, told EBD she would sort her out,” said Madge resuming the story, “but she failed too. EBD was unforgiving to the extreme. Gran was killed off; old you know and Verity seemed to change magically from a self-possessed child to being described as a ‘broken reed’. If anyone was a broken reed, it was Mary Lou. She hated being in those books. Refuses point blank to have anything to do with the Chalet School. She’s happy pottering around in her garden in the remotest part of Yorkshire.”
“That still doesn’t explain why Jo tolerated it,” said Simone.
“Oh that’s easy,” said Madge. “It gave Jo a way into the school, helped her to look wise and caring. Jack managed to upset the applecart once or twice and butted in, but usually it was Jo dispensing all the advice and helping all these troubled misfit girls. No one else was allowed to.”
“Why didn’t any of the other girls stand up and fight for a role in the books?” asked Kathie quietly. “You never seem to hear about any of them after their first term at school.”
“Oh there’s an easy explanation for that,” said a sleepy voice.

“Hi Auntie Madge, Mama is very disgruntled with you for doing this.”
“Con Maynard,” exclaimed Madge. “I don’t care what your Mother thinks.”
“Oh I know,” assured Con, It's hilarious watching Mama getting hysterical over it all. Len's trying to calm her down. She's throwing a tantrum like Margot did when she was a kid."
“Well why didn’t they fight?” asked Kathie impatiently.
Con’s grin widened when she saw Bette. “It’s all Bette’s fault, hers and Gertrude Steinbruckes.”
“What is she talking about Bette?” demmanded Hilda.
Bette started to laugh seeing where Con was going with this.
“You joined?” she asked incredulously.
“Oh yes,” said Con. “I found out early on in the piece. Why do you think I was always described as the quiet moony one?”
Marie started laughing and she clapped her hands. “Oh this is too marvellous for words,” she cried. “I can’t believe you joined.”
“It was a lot more fun,” said Con with a grin, “though EBD nearly found out more than once. Vi Lucy told me about it. She saw I was always overlooked, like she had been so mentioned it to me. I got Joan, Ricki and Odette involved. I know most of the gang were.”
“What are you people talking about? Bette?” Demanded Madge.
Bette turned to her with shinning eyes. “I’d forgotten about it. You lost membership once you were permanently written out of the books.”
“What was it?” Asked Madge frustrated.
Bette started explaining. “Some of us lesser characters started a secret society. You weren’t allowed to be a main character, which is why, you, Hilda, Matey, Kathie, Grizel, or Simone never found out about it.”
“You knew David?” asked Kathie incredulously.
David nodded. “Most the boys are in it,” he said. “We got up to all sort, secret night escapades, whatever we wanted. If you weren’t in a scene, you could do what ever you wanted."
"That’s partly why we convinced Joan to join,” explained Con, “She looked old enough to get us into places. That was partly a problem though because EBD didn’t quite trust Joan and tried to describe her as always being on the outer. The stupid thing is, she probably one of the more popular ones. EBD was such a snob and wanted to get rid of her after the first book. Why do you think Ricki stopped being such close friends with Len for? She caught us sneaking out one night and dropped Len like a hot potato after that and started hanging around with us. Mama inadvertently helped cos she said how nice it was I had a friend. Margot and Len couldn’t be in it. EBD kept tabs on them too well.”
“Carla, Sophie, Vanna, Bianca and I all joined in our day,” said Marie with shinning eyes, “Sophie and Berta Hamel knew Innsbruck like the back of their hands, so we always knew the best places to go to.”
Hilda, Madge and Jem stared at the girls stunned.
“I don’t believe it,” said Madge and Hilda flatly hardly able to believe this went on under their noses.
“It’s true,” reassured Con, “I don’t think EBD ever found out, though I know she suspected me towards the end, cos she started including me in more scenes.”

“So you didn’t fight because you were off doing your own thing?” Asked Hilda flatly.
Con nodded, "what was the point of arguing with EBD. She just wrote you out of the series. Margot tried. Don’t you remember that awful tantrum she threw about always having to play the ‘bad’ triplet. EBD sent her off to Canada for the next two years. It’s the only time I’ve seen Margot ever get angry or upset,” added Con reflectively, “She came back so quiet and shy after that. She loved being in the books. I didn’t care so much, so tended to do my own thing. But it certainly showed me that there was no point in fighting. And now,” said Con with a grin I get the best drabbles. People love me.”
Con said this with such a smirk, but as everyone in the room knew Con was definitely one of the more popular family members with the public.
“I just can’t believe you got away with it said Madge, breathless. No wonder no one fought in the latter years. Almost everyone would have been in it. Very few remained a main character for longer than the initial book they were in, whereas in Tyrol, there were so few characters and more was made of them.”

“Con Maynard I can’t believe my own daughter did something like that,” said a strident voice.
“Joey,” said Madge wincing.
Joey contrary to common belief did not have a golden, choirboy voice, but had one of the most strident tin-like tones. It sounded like nails running down a blackboard.
“I can’t believe your all in here, saying how terrible, poor EBD is,” said Joey scandalized. “You should all be ashamed of yourselves.”
Madge rolled her eyes.
“And I can’t believe your still so self centred Jo,” she said. “Do you think the entire series should be about you? Even when EBD tried to give you a smaller role by sending you to Canada pointing out it was a school story, you still kicked up such a stink.”
“I just liked being the main character,” said Joey in an injured voice. “All the fans loved me.”
Everyone groaned at this epitaph.
“They loved a lot of other characters too, not just you,” said Madge gently, “and not everyone loves you. You should look at some of these stories.”
“Those,” said Joey contemptuously, “they’re drabbles. Who takes them seriously and how dare they deviate from EBD,”
“cos ‘She’s the author, no one should change what the author writes. Her words are sacred’,” chanted Sybil, Simone and Grizel.
All three started laughing at Joey’s face. They had heard this particular statement more times than they could count.
“Well she is,” said Joey injured. “This was all her creation, what gives anyone the right to change it.”
“Look Joey,” said Madge patiently, “I don’t think EBD ever thought the series would last as long as it did or remain as popular as it does. Love or hate EBD she’s made an impact on all of us, the drabble writers included. Isn’t it better they keep us alive, than for us to remain, within the pages of some book on a dusty shelf somewhere? Come on Jo lighten up, EBD did not win the Pulitzer Prize for writing.”
“Imagine if she did,” said Jem in sotto voce to Sybil. “We’d never hear the end of it.”
Sybil nodded and rolled her eyes at the thought.
“She wrote a fun girls school books. That’s all. Some of it was good and some pretty awful," continued Madge, "Now Jo you can either, join us and have some fun or you can sit on someone’s dusty bookshelf.”
“I’ll join,” said Joey giving in.
“Good. Now I think we should send out some more plot bunnies,” said Madge wickedly, “let see if we can influence these people to write the stories we want.
“Plot Bunnies, Plot bunnies, make me a plot,” crooned Jem.

“What!” exclaimed Joey, “That’s not what EBD would write, How..”
“ ‘dare they deviate from EBD, cos she’s the author, no one should change what the author writes. Her words are sacred’,” chanted Con, Kathie and David. The three laughed at Joey’s face.
“Lighten up Joey, they’re not taking this seriously,” said Kathie.
“I certainly am,” said Jem solemnly, “I like wearing the school uniform,” as he changed back to the original flame and brown.
“I always said EBD should have gone lime green and cream,” began Joey
“But,” said Simone her eyes dancing, “ ‘she’s the author, no one should change what the author writes. Her words are sacred.’”
Everyone burst out laughing at Joey’s face on that.
“Me I like this one,” said Simone producing a drabble and handing it over to Joey. “What do you think Joey, dear?” She smiled sweetly.
‘I wonder what she’s up to,’ thought Hilda half guessing what drabble Simone was handing over.
Joey went darkly red as she red it. “I didn’t mean it quite the way she made it sound,” began Joey in an injured voice.
“But EBD’s ‘the author, no one should change what the author writes. Her words are sacred,’” said Simone laughing at Joey’s embarrassment.
"Joey I know what you meant she," added kindly.
“I guess I can see what you mean,” said Joey slowly. “It wasn’t particularly nice. I just loved being the main character in a book. I’m sorry.”
“I know ma cherie,” said Simone patting her hand

“Well,” said a voice from the door, “I wish someone would write a love story about me that doesn’t involve me falling in love with Kathie and not with meeting a doctor while out on a school trip.”
“Nancy,” said Kathie
“Well I’m tired of all of it and so if we’re sending out plot bunnies then I would like to send out plot bunnies about that.”
David winked at Kathie, “I can think of one,” he said in an innocent voice, “What about a threesome between Kathie me and you?”
Nancy threw a pillow at David. “You’re too old for me David,” said Nancy “If I’m going for a toy boy then I want someone younger, say Steven Maynard’s age.”
Everyone started laughing at David and Joey’s faces over that.
“Well you know how you get that,” said Jem solemnly, “you need,” and he started whispering the recipe to Nancy. Nancy nodded and started madly writing the recipe down. She soon left the room as was seen racing around the field outside after bunny rabbits.
“Jem what did you tell her?” asked Madge staring at Nancy running madly after the bunnies, wide eyed.
“Wait and see,” said Jem maddeningly. Nancy eventually came back in.
“Okay,” she said breathlessly, “that’s three plot bunnies.”
“Add in three roses, one pink, one white and one red, a pinch a lavender and a hint of pepper,” directed Jem.
“Pepper!” exclaimed Madge and Hilda.
“You need a touch of spice in romance, none of this solid lump of comfort rubbish, let’s get some passion,” said Jem impatiently. “Now repeat after me, Plot bunny, plot bunny, make me a plot.”
And Nancy started crooning the words.
“Jem,” whispered Madge, “You know it goes Plot bunny make me a stew.”
“It doesn’t matter,” said Jem waving away her concerns, “she’s happy.”
Madge looked and saw Nancy smiling beatifically.
"I guess," she said concerned.
“What I want to know is about Hilda," said Jem changing the subject

“Me,” said Hilda surprised.
“Yes,” said Jem, “that plot bunny look almost identical to you.”
Everyone looked at the bunny.
“Yes it does,” said Sybil scrutinising it. “It has your look about it, especially when we were called into the Study.”
Hilda positively smirked.
“Why do you think so many like me,” she purred. “Mini Me Hilda makes sure they all write what I want them too. I’m not going through it all again, not like EBD. I have them all under my thumb.”
And Madge could have sworn Mini Me Hilda had the same gentle, sarcastic smile as Hilda and gave a shiver, she could imagine some poor hapless girl hunched over a computer madly typing with Mini Me Hilda smiling like that at them, too terrified to type anything that the bunny would not like.
“Hilda,” she said scandalized “You can’t do that!”
Hilda smiled sweetly, gently and sarcastically,
“You should try it Madge,” she purred. “You’d be amazed how well it works.”
“She has a point there, Madge,” said Jem.
“Go for it Mum,” said David and Sybil.
Madge looked thoughtful, “Why not she said at last, Maybe it’s time to start getting the stories I want told.”

It was a few months later, and Jem came into the room.
“Madge, I have something to show you.”
He pulled back the curtain between reality and fantasy and there sitting on the top of a computer was a Mini Me Madge plot bunny smiling gently, and sarcastically. Sitting at the computer was a poor hapless girl, looking terrified as she madly typed her next drabble.
THE END
“Jem,” roared a voice, “It didn’t work, there are no love stories about me written yet.”
THE END AGAIN
