#1: Katie gets her SLOC Author: LizBLocation: Oxon, England PostPosted: Thu Aug 18, 2005 1:57 pm

Katie sat reading drabbles feeling crosser and crosser. It wasn’t fair. Why did all these Chalet School girls get the luffly SLOCs, leaving none over for her. It was just too greedy of them and that (as somebody should tell them) was not at all good chalet girl behaviour!

She flicked to another drabble – here was Mary-Lou with a lovely SLOC, another drabble – here was Evvy and Edgar, another drabble – even Dorothy who was only mentioned once had a wonderful SLOC. It just wasn’t fair!

She thought about the men she knew – no, none of them were up to standard. She read a few more drabbles, but finally had had enough, switched off the computer and decided to go for a walk in the park to clear her head.

Her thoughts continued along the same lines as she walked. It wasn’t even as if some of these drabblees had risked anything – either their life or someone else’s – to get their SLOC, which had at least been a time-honoured tradition in the books. No, they just saw one appear and nabbed them before anyone else had the chance! She started to imagine what her SLOC would be like and how she would meet him, but decided it was no use - someone else would probably get him first.

Just to add to her general disgruntlement it started to rain. Unfortunately, Katie had no coat and no umbrella with her and the rain was of the definitely wet, rather than the slightly moist, variety. She was just wondering why things always went from bad to worse when she heard a voice.

“Would you like to share my umbrella?”

Katie looked round. Tall (even by her standards) and handsome and distinguished looking – dark, melancholy, inscrutable eyes – melting, musical, sympathetic voice and, most importantly, carrying a large, lime-green umbrella.

"Thank you," she said.

"We'd better hurry to that little pavilion over there," suggested the unknown. "We can wait there until this shower is over. It is not likely to rain so heavily very long."

The words were very commonplace, but oh, the tone! And the smile that accompanied them! Katie felt her heart beating strangely.

Together they scurried to the pavilion and sat breathlessly down under its friendly roof. Katie laughed and being a friendly person, smiled up at him.

The raindrops sparkled on her shining hair; her cheeks were flushed, her eyes big and starry. Her companion looked down at her admiringly and realised his life would never be the same again.

“You haven’t got too wet I hope?” he asked politely.

“No, nothing that won’t dry,” answered Katie, although to be honest she wouldn't have noticed if the water was streaming off her, “I’m Katie,” she added with another smile.

“I’m Jonathan. Nice to meet you Katie.” He gave her a smile that warmed her from her head to her toes.

The rain came steadily down for the best part of an hour. But the time seemed really very short as they discussed books, films, music and life in general. When the clouds parted and a burst of pale sunshine fell across the park, Katie and her companion walked towards her home together.

“May I see you again?” asked Jonathan as they stopped to say goodbye.

A tiny part of Katie’s mind noticed and approved the correct use of may, the rest was busy agreeing that yes, she would like to see him again.

Jonathan was filled with relief when she said yes. Somehow during the day his world had changed, and he couldn’t remember what his life had been without her in it, he just knew it must have been incredibly dreary, something he instinctively knew would never be the case with Katie.

After he had gone, Katie sat in her room for a long time, looking at nothing, but with a small smile on her face. Eventually she turned to the CBB and read the drabbles, again smiling to herself. She didn’t mind the happiness of Evvy or Dorothy now. She knew she had met her own SLOC, and really, he cast all those drabble-SLOCs completely in the shade!

Right, I'm off to haunt Regent's Park sans umbrella and keep my eyes open for that tell tale flash of lime green. Well, I will when my dissertation magically writes itself to an excellent standard. What do you mean that's not going to happen?!! Shocked

ETA: P.S. I'm not that tall. Why oh why does no one ever believe me? *sob*

Lol!

Am quite jealous.... also am compelled to go and haunt a park somewhere in a torrential downpour (although that's not exactly a possibility at the moment!) without an umbrella... hmm.

Thanks Liz!

Hmmm, if it's all the same to you, I'd rather not take up that challenge!

Has visions of squadrons of CBB'ers, all wearing lime green neckers, haunting Regents Park in search of SLOCs.

Laughing Liz, excellent.

*also jealous*

Katie, when you meet him, can you ask if he has a brother? Or a friend? Or even a casual acquaintance?

*slopes off back to live vicariously through ,y drabble again while I wait for my own SLOC*

All these CBBers wandering around in the rain with no coats or umbrellas - you'll all catch pleuro-pneumonia!

....mind you, then you'd have to be treated by a doctor.... Very Happy

Well, I don't think he'd be up to my standards unless he had a Maynard-sized family of equally SLOC-y, single brothers for me to share out amongst you all *g*

I've just had an awful thought - the time we spend on here might just account for the lack of SLOCs in our lives.

Do you try looking for these SLOC's at gathers if you go out for a walk or something? Usually, the CB mistresses find their SLOC's when they're in a group of people.

Noooooooo!
How awful CBB or Sloc?
What a decision Sad

Hmm. But I am only on the CBB when I'm not out and can't get out (lack of transport in tiny village!) so I think it's ok!
