This was RuthB's suggestion after I asked about the cost of nose jobs, so blame her!

Joey Maynard sat in the waiting room of the exclusive Harley Street surgeon and silently blessed Jack's medical contacts. She clutched an airtight box closely to her, it was labelled "Biological specimen, do not open".

As she waited, she shut her eyes and leant back in chair, memories of Bruno flooded her brain, Bruno as a puppy being presented to her by the school, Bruno as a young dog, knocking visitors to the ground, Bruno running about the Platz, Bruno and that last fatal encounter with the escaped circus Lion. Joey opened her eyes and clutched the specimen box even closer.

“Well,” she said out loud, “I lost Rufus, and have nothing to really remember him by, this is not going to happen with Bruno.”

The door opened and a nurse stepped into the room, “Mrs Maynard, the surgeon is ready for you now.” Joey followed the nurse out of the room.

Three weeks later Joey emerged from the surgery, the bandages that had covered her face were gone, as were the black eyes and any swelling. She stepped out proudly, oblivious of the stares she was attracting. She sniffed the air, and then pulled out a mirror to admire her new nose, it was black, wet and shiny. Joey knew Bruno would never be forgotten.
