Jo sat down with a cup of Anna’s delicious coffee. She gave a pleasurable sigh as she contemplated the day in front of her.

Jack was away on a course, so the other doctors at the San were on call. Therefore, she did not need to worry about his phone line ringing in the night - as usual, he had arranged for his calls to be diverted.

The younger children were at school, even Phil, Geoff, and Marie-Claire were at St Nicholas’s house. The children had gone back 2 days ago, so all the unpacking had been done with the resultant phone calls about missing hankies and the wrong shoes. The elder children were at their colleges and now quite capable of taking care of themselves.

Rosli was taking the dogs for their morning walk. After Bruno had died of old age, Jack had put his foot down about huge enormous dogs that knocked visitors off their feet and were not taken for walks by their mistress. Nevertheless, he had agreed she could have a smaller dog, as long as she made sure it had enough exercise. Jo had interpreted this to mean that she could keep Rosli, now no longer needed as a nursery maid, as a dog maid. Also, that it would be much better to have more than one dog as they gave each other much more exercise than one dog would as they chased each other about. Jack realised that St Bernard’s were not so bad once he had been tripped up a few times by rioting English Springer Spaniels* chasing after biscuit crumbs.

Anna brought the post in and sat down at opposite Jo at the kitchen table. She pried open the tin of lemon biscuits.
“Fer arn man reff,” she said, mouth full of welsh cake.
“Sorry?” Said Jo blankly.
Anna finished chewing and swallowed. “There aren’t many left. I’ll have to make some more later. Ooh, see there are many biscuit recipes in the new Woman’s Weekly - mmm, apricot squares sound nice.”
“Let’s see,” Jo craned across the table to see the magazine. “Mmm, and look at these coconut wafers. Let’s have a baking session later - when Rosli gives the dogs their grooming. Then she can try out the biscuits while they’re warm and she’s built up an appetite.”
Anna hid her expression of distaste at the thought of coconut wafers, but agreed the baking session was a good idea. She passed the post to Jo. Jo browsed through the pile, separating her own mail from the rest. Anna had already retrieved her own and Rosli’s letters. The two women sat, eating and drinking and reading letters, magazines and the new Argos catalogue.

Suddenly, Jo let out a squeal of excitement.
“Ooh! I have to get them! Look, the most perfect dog beds! In just my favourite colour! Ooh, Anna, I think we’d better get one for every room the dogs sleep in!”
Into Anna’s face she thrust the catalogue, showing her the dog beds. Anna blinked. The beds were not to her taste. But she refused to allow the dogs to sleep in her room, have the run of the rest of the house as they might. Therefore, she phoned the order though to Argos and before many days had passed, the courier brought them a vanload of dog beds.

So when Jack got back from his course, he was greeted by lime green striped dog beds in virtually every room of the house. Unfortunately, Fabian, Florian, Franz and Fritz had taken delight in chewing some of them, strewing lime green and pink PVC throughout his dressing room.

*If you are offended by my stereotyping of English Springer Spaniels, I am sorry. My parents ended up having two plus one other dog plus (eventually) two young boys in the household… English Springer Spaniels are lovely dogs, I would have one if we had the room and I didn’t work and I had a car so I could get to good places for taking them for walks. But they don’t grow up.

Thanks, Lyanne. I love the way that Joey misinterprets the way that Jack says things. I also love the lime green dog baskets!

Yes. Don't you just want one? I was browsing through the new catalogue and saw it - Ii just knew Jo would want one - but they are too small for Bruno... Embarassed . I'm not saying they're the ideal size for an ESS either, though they are

Suitable for medium sized dogs

But then my Grandad's ESS Bonnie, who lived with my parents managed to squash herself into the cats' beds and my son's tiny shoeboxes, so I decided Jo could have them!

L ovely, Lyanne, but I'm sorry it's complete - I was looking forward to seeing what mayhem the dogs could create with all those batches of biscuits, remembering the time my ESS ate two dozen fairy cakes (and was VERY sick!).
Loved the lime green beds. Laughing

Very funny Lyanne.
