Post subject:  Jack's new car (short and complete)

Prompted by Sunglass's comment in the discussion about Joey and Co. in Tirol, a mini-drabble just popped into my head... Hope you enjoy!

Jack Maynard was jumpy and distracted at breakfast, so much so that even Joey, who was never very alert in the mornings, asked him what was wrong.

Jack turned a beatific smile to her, and said that there was nothing wrong and that it was a beautiful day, ignoring the fact that it was gloomy and overcast. Nothing, not even Felix’s whining and Cecil crying for Rosli, and Joey wondering idly but meaningfully what had happened to the children’s clothes, they just didn’t last five minutes and the children grew so fast, could distract him from the joy to come.

At last, there came a loud rumbling noise and then the sound of hydraulics operating. Jack glanced out of the window, and dashed outside, his heart racing. There it was, all his, not to be shared. He stroked its clean lines, and thanked the delivery man so fervently, as though he had been bringing Jack a great gift.

Joey stomped out of the house angrily, and yet consumed with curiosity. “What on earth is going on?” she asked. “What on earth’s that?”

“It’s my new car,” said Jack dreamily. “Want to come for a spin?” He had had enough of driving a minibus packed with children, and when he had last been in Bern, the Porsche dealership had seemed to beckon to him with mysterious and forbidden allure. Losing his heart to a beautiful silver sports car which could do 0-60 in seven seconds, he plonked down a cheque (which he had been intending to use to buy new clothes for all his children, wards and adoptees – and which more than covered the cost of the vehicle) and the car was his.

“How will we get the children in?” Joey asked, puzzled, looking at the space behind the two seats which could have accommodated a thin snake on a diet (but only if it had held its breath) and as if she thought there was a fold-out chair secreted within. “Is there some sort of dickey?”

Jack scowled at her. Stupid woman! Why on earth would you carry children in this chariot? They didn’t deserve the treat – and frankly he wasn’t sure that Joey did, either. Let her drive Minnie, that lime green monstrosity which could barely manage forty on the motorway and twenty up hill. He twisted the key in the ignition, and heard the roar of the eight cylinder engine. “Get in, if you’re coming,” he said.

Without waiting longer than five seconds for his wife to change her mind, leaving her looking after him as though she’d been handed a changeling, Jack roared off along the Platz, singing Born to be wild, which the salesman had kindly left playing in the cassette deck. This was the life!

 Can't Joey and Jack do something WITHOUT the children for once?

One presumes that they have done on at least seven occasions!

Wonders if SLOC could change his old MGB for Jack's car.... After all, we don't have any children's clothes to buy now!

Wonderful, Emma! :D

My friend's car is like that (not a porsche, but the description of the space in the back). I really suffered on a journey to Birmingham and back!

Good for Jack, I love the fact the car was cheaper than paying for clothes for all his children, wards and adoptees
