Thanks again to Ally for beta-ing

“Now, are you sure that’s everything?” Pim looked thoughtfully at the car. It didn’t look like anything else would fit in it, but just in case she decided to go back to her room for one last look.

Part of her was loath to leave the small room that had been her sanctuary for so long. The room looked bare, empty and so much bigger without all her belongings in it. So much had happened here. There was the desk that had proved to be such a safe hiding place, although it had got rather crowded with wibbling CBBers at one time. She gave le sigh and checked under it to make sure nobody had left anything behind, but decided the m&m squashed into the carpet just wasn’t worth salvaging. “Goodbye room, don’t be too lonely without me. Be nice to your next tenant” Pim softly closed the door behind her and went back to the car, ready as she would ever be for her journey to the real world of pensions, taxes and other wibble-inducing things.

It was a shame she wasn’t as small as Vikki, she thought as she squeezed into the passenger seat, and had bags packed in around her.

Finally der vater manoeuvred himself into the driving seat, pulled the last box in and balanced it on his lap and shut the door. The key turned in the ignition, the car gathered all its strength and started to move. Pim managed to free a hand to wave a last goodbye to St Andrews and headed for the hills of home.

It was a long journey – laden down with all the paraphernalia Pim had crammed into the flat in Gatty, the car laboured along. Eventually der vater took pity on it and came off the motorway at a service station to give it a rest.

Pim extracted herself gradually from the passenger seat and stretched her cramped limbs gratefully. It being bank holiday weekend the car park was packed with cars, as people spent the weekend sitting in long queues of traffic only to arrive somewhere pouring with rain and the sit in long queues of traffic for the return journey.

Pim wandered across the carpark towards the amenities, pondering on the merits of the items offered on the menu of a well-known fast-food chain. In the end she settled for some fries and a brown watery liquid that claimed to be coke. She was just sucking up the last of the liquid through the straw, enjoying the noise it made, when she heard a commotion behind her.

“It’s a stupid book! I don’t want to read it.”

“Well I don’t want it either.”

Pim turned and looked to see what book they were arguing over. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw it. How could anybody not want it?

“Well you can’t MAKE me read it so there!”

“Can too!”

“Can’t ‘cos I’m going to throw it away!” and suiting the action to the word the girl flung the book away from her.

Pim’s reflexes sprang into action and she caught it just before it hit her on the nose. The sound of the arguing faded into the distance as her fingertips encountered the hard smoothness of the cover. The children, seeing the book had almost hit a grown up person (for so she appeared to them) scarpered.

Pim made her way dreamily back to the car, where der vater waited. All she had to do was to convince him they had room for another book, or if necessary she could discard that Occitan text book, and they would be on their way home to the hills. Pim and her shiny new hardback of A Chalet Girl From Kenya.

This (or the beginning of it at least - sadly not the CS from Kenya bit!) reminds me so much of my last day of uni. We had to do an emergency stop on the way back - it was not fun!!!

I haven't been able to walk properly since Saturday. Does that entitle me to some nice hbs?

...hey, if the leg's going to hurt anyway, I might as well try it!
