The enraged prefect ran from the door of her home like one of the hounds of hell, ready to tear her quarry apart. Long black curly hair seemed to flail with a life of its' own as if it belonged to Medusa the Gorgon. Her lungs heaved, greedily gasping in the nourishing oxygen she needed to maintain pursuit of the miscreant. Justice was swift and it was going to be lingering and painful if the prefect had her way. Strong limbs crashed upon the dry autumn twigs and leaves where the varmit was last seen. The prefect paused, to catch her breath, her nails as sharp as talons and her eyes wide with fury.

The convicted felon was close by! She could almost smell her!

"Aline! Enough is enough! C..come home! Let's talk this over!"

Silence.

The prefect frowned. Her plan wasn't working.

"I promise I won't hurt you."

This was said with an almost mournful note. The pree would dearly love to hurt her; and yet if the little brat appeared she would feel bound to keep her promise and not hurt her.

There was a snort of disbelief and a squeak of defiance.

"Pooh! If I believed that I would be as dumb as you!"

The prefect looked up to where the sound came.

"Aline! Come down from there at once, before you hurt yourself!"

"What and have you hurt me instead? No thanks!"

"You will ruin your dress, you young monkey!"

"Never mind! Mummy will give it to Sybs and order her to repair it!"

"HOW DARE YOU THINK YOUR SISTER IS SOME MAID TO DO YOUR MENDING FOR YOU!"

Ailie Russell nearly fell out of the tree at this reaction.

"Well, maybe if I asked Sybil nicely..."

The prefect was about to give an angry retort. A very angry retort, when she heard her father calling. With one final glare, Josette Russell turned on her heel to head home, her little sister sniggering in the trees as she went.

Josette heard that unwise snigger. With a roar that startled Ailie, she scaled the tree like a cat, only to miss her footing, fall and roll into a muddy ditch.

Ailie laughed hysterically! Only to fall out of the tree herself. Fortunately neither girl was hurt, but Madge Russell turned up, having been looking for her daughters for a good half hour. She was in time to see Ailie fall and catch her in good time, then she saw the mud spattered Josette.

At once, Ailie played the injured little girl, "Mummy! Josette's being a pig!"

"That's not true, mum! All...."

"Straight home! the pair of you! Now! No Ifs or buts, now!"

Madge glared at her retreating daughters.

"I so wanted just one sweet daughter!" she muttered to herself bitterly. Her only hope lay with Sybil, who had gone rock climbing with David for the weekend!

A disapproving Madge followed her two younger daughters into the house. As she enered, she heard the carefree laughter of her eldest daughter and the rich chuckle of her eldest son, David.

"That was exhausting Davie, but so exhilirating! I really stretched my muscles today! Same time time next week brother?"

"Yes I expect so, I'm sure Mum won't mind if you miss Auntie Joey's visit!"

Madge frowned as she heard this. Unluckily, David and Sybil had walked into their mother's presence as this ill chosen comment was uttered.

Neither the two eldest Russells saw their mother. The first thing they saw was the mud spattered Josette and a terrified looking Ailie.

"Oh what have you been up to now?" exclaimed David in a not very tolerant voice.

"You've been provoking Josette again. Haven't you Ailie?" There was a dangerous note to Sybil's voice.

Josette tried to flash a warning look at Sybil to indicate mother was on the warpath and within earshot, but it was too late.

"Don't blame Aline for everything Sybil! And as for you, David, I most certainly do mind if you and Sybil both miss your Aunt Josephine's visit. How often do you get to see such a lovely, caring Aunt?"

Sybil and David slunk onto the comfy chairs in the drawing room as Madge proceeded to investigate the latest family squall.

"Well?"

"Josette's been trying your make up on mummy! Without permish! That's pilfering!"

Josette blushed with embarrassment.

"Is this true, Josette?"

Josette nodded. She had only been experimenting. She wasn't allowed make up at the Chalet School, even as a prefect. She just wanted to feel older and more mature! She just wanted to take some pride in her appearance and be attractive. She didn't want to be a little girl anymore. It had felt so liberating and intimate to put her mother's make up on, she felt secure and adult sitting at her mother's dressing table. Then the brat had come and laughed at her, humiliated her! Why oh why was she lumbered with such a pest?

Aline fully expected fire and brimstone to rain down upon her big sister's head. That was something that would impress Janice and Judy! That she, Aline Russell had brought her prudish, priggish, bossy beast of a big sister down! Then the tears fell from Josette's eyes. Suddenly Aline's glory melted. She hadn't meant to make Josette cry. She really hadn't.

David was despatched to fetch fresh handkerchiefs and tissues.

Josette was tearfully explaining to Madge just why she was playing with the make up and jewellery. Madge could feel her daughter's pain. She felt a different pain as well. Her daughter Josette was fast becoming a woman. Time had flowed by at an immense rate. In the blink of an eye Josette had gone from babyhood to womanhood. Where had all the years gone?

A very guilty Ailie was in tears herself at the distress she had caused Josette. Periodically she bleated a choked little "I'm sorry Josette!" or "Please forgive me!" or "I won't do it again, I promise!" Initially these were met with glares from Sybil that seemed to speak volumes of "You WILL be sorry!" or "Wait till I get my hands on you!"

When the wailing had ceased and given way to laboured breathing and the odd sob, Madge sat back and thought. She looked at all three of her daughters. The hardy Sybil, who looked so pretty, but was as tough as an old boot. She would go on adventurous sports with her brother and adored games. Then Josette, who seemed to be born as a mature young woman. A no nonsense character with a short fuse when it came to pests and brats. She could give as good as she got in an argument! Then there was Aline. A feather headed tomboy, who loved fun and a bit of rough and tumble play. She would indulge her little brothers in mock battles and games of soldiers.

"Will I ever, ever, EVER have one sweet daughter?" Madge said out loud.

Her three ladies looked shocked at this. Of course they were sweet daughters! They loved their parents, Sybil had her embroidery, Josette was academically excellent and quiet and Ailie was very much Daddy's little girl, the apple of her father's eye! What more qualifications for femininity and sweetness were there?

It was Sybil who plucked up the courage to ask their mother,

"Mummy, exactly what makes a daughter sweet and were you a sweet little girl?"

Madge looked at Sybil, she was completely thrown by this question.

"Well....I...er...I mean, well. I...I..." stuttered Madge.

Three pairs of eyes gazed at her with varying degrees of incredulity. Could it be possible that their mother did not know the answer to everything?

"Well, I suppose I want someone very quiet and domesticated and to keep me company."

This opened up a whole can of worms!

"Don't you love us?"
"Don't we help around the home enough?"
"Are you bored with Daddy?"
"Don't you like the boys?"

"Of course I do! I'm not bored with your father! Oh dear this is getting worse and worse!"

"Allright girls! Please give me a moment to speak! Please! Then I wil answer any questions!"

"You see, the girls in the Bettany and Russell families have always been very adventurous and extrovert in one way or another. I was very much a games person, like you Sybs. I would sail through any schoolwork, like you Josette and I adored climbing trees, like you Ailie. Aunt Joey was a chip off the old block, Grandma Bettany would travel around India in some of the ost basic and frightful conditions.

As for your father's side of the family, well, Sybil you are most like your Auntie Margot. She absolutely adored you. Your father tells me she would fly off into passions but be deeply caring about her family underneath. He once said to me, 'Madge, I thank God I have a daughter like Sybil, it means Margot is alive and well, every time I look at her. I wouldn't want Sybs any other way.' Josette, you and Ailie are most like your Grandma Russell, plenty of energy!

I often wondered just what it would be like to have a daughter so different, so completely the opposite to what your father and I are used to in our families! I would love to know what a sweet daughter is!"

The Russell girls were struck dumb.

"Mummy, I think it would be very dull for you!" blurted out Josette.

More silence.

Ailie looked at her big sister in wonder. Josette never said things like that!

Madge nodded and smiled.

"Yes. Yes. I suppose it would be!"

That seemed to be an end to it until Joey in alll her glory and with assembled infants burst in.

"Joey! I thought you were coming next weekend!"

"Sorry old thing! got the dates mixed up! Don't mind do you? Goodo! Can't refuse your dear sister! Oh do hold Geoff Sybs! And Josette, here's Phil and Ailie, make yourself useful, Cecil needs the toilet!"

"Josephine." Madge said with a touch of ice in her voice.

"Be careful not to drop Geoff, Sybs! He's the world's worst wriggler! The only time he isn't out of mischief is when he is asleep! He's as bad as Mike and Felix! All imps of mischief!"

"Josephine!" Madge's voice was at danger level and if looks could kill...

"Now I know I can trust you of all your sisters with the babies Josette! Still, you're not really that motherly are you? Why can't one of you be a sweet, dainty daughter?"

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" The whole house shook. Outside, Jack was showing Jem his latest motor car, they both looked up in astonishment, David peeped out of his room where he was revising for exams, Kevin and Kester hardly dared to breathe and Sybil, Josette and Ailie immediately looked for the nearest exit!

"I am fed up to my back teeth of you blundering in, expecting everybody to wait on you hand and foot, with your 'I always know best' attitude. Is it any wonder you have problems with Mike and Felix if you keep referring to them as 'imps of mischief'? In that case they will always live up to that label. We've already seen that with your triplets and the labels you gae them! And whilst we are on the subject of labelling, how dare you speak about my daughters like that?"

Madge had been wanting to say this for years. Joey edged towards the door, but Madge slammed it shut.

"Oh no you don't!"

"M..M...Madge!"

"You've had this coming for years, young lady!"

"I..."

"You gave me sleepless nights as a baby and as a child, even now you give me sleepless nights, wondering whether you are going to die in childbirth or go off on some hare brained rescue attempt to pluck some child from the bottom of the deepest lake in Switzerland or something! And you have the nerve to criticise my daughters!"

"Sorry!"

"So I should hope! But it doesn't cut the ice this time! Now, you are going to elsewhere for the week and you will turn up here at the proper time we arranged, for next weekend. Is that clear?"

Joey nodded.

"Crystal clear, Madge."

"Good. Now go!"

Joey had never departed her sister's presence quicker.

Madge could hear the voices outside.

"Come on Jack! We're going! I got the dates mixed up, I know, let's all go and stay with Mary Lou!"

Jack's face looked strained and Joey decided to ignore the sigh of despondency that uttered from eleven children.

Madge breathed a sigh of relief and then she started to laugh hysterically. Her three daughters eyed her warily.

"What are you looking so worried about? I won! I finally won!"

More maniacal laughter followed.

"Hold on girls! I must show you something!"

A truly wonderful cousin's wedding! It has taken me a week to recover. I'm getting old for one thing and it was "mad person" week in the library throughout this week just gone! Sorry the update has been so long,

Madge Russell had spent some time rummaging in the spider infested, dark attic of the Round House. Photograph albums were thrown down to her waiting daughters, who were starting to wonder if Daddy should call the friendly men in white coats for Mummy. Their fears were confirmed when their mother practically jumped from the attic clutching a metal box and shrieking like a Middle who had just outwitted Matey.

Sybil, Josette and Ailie were press ganged into setting up their father's cine film projector.

"A bit of your past girls! And mine!"

Intrigued, the Russell girls were watching the original Chalet School. The person holding the camera appeared to duck behind a curtain, then focussed on a tall, middle aged lady who appeared to be giving Con Maynard a telling off!

"That's not Con! That's Auntie Joey!"

"Top of the class Ailie! Now for an extra point, who was the lady telling her off?"

"Mademoiselle! Mademoiselle Therese Lepattre!"

"That's my girl, Sybs! Guess who was the cameraman!"

"It was you wasn't it, mum?" Josette asked quietly.

Madge nodded, giggling away.

"When Therese found me! Oh the look on her face, but when Joey found out I filmed her! She never knew until she was married! Ha! Ha! ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!"

"Mum! I don't believe it!"
"You're joking!"
"What did Auntie Joey do?"

"She was so shocked! I pointed out that this tape would be shown at any Chalet School reunion if she didn't behave herself! I think she needs a little reminder!"

A wicked idea formed in Madge's head. Some of the old Chalet School girls were meeting at the Round House at Madge's invitation. Her thoughts went back to her daughters as she heard a stifled sob from Sybiil. Josette and Ailie did not recognise the frail lady cuddling a toddler Sybil.

"Auntie Margot!" croaked Sybil.

"Oh Auntie Margot, I do wish you were still with us! I remember you saying I was a proper Russell girl! Maybe you could have helped when...when..."

Madge comforted her eldest.

"Yes, Sybs. I think she would have been a great help to you in your younger years. Not just over the accident. You see girls, Josette, you take after me in looks and being academic. Oh I know Sybs and Ailie love games as I do, but both of you take after the Russell girls.

I remember Margot saying how Sybs used to remind her of herself in younger days, a lot of good within, but quite a wild thing! There's nothing wrong in that! Your father always says of Sybs and Ailie, 'Margot all over again!' He means that in a fond way. It's as if his own sister and mother are alive and well in his daughters! He loves you all equally, as I do."

"Could that be why Auntie Jo seems to have such difficulty in understanding Sybs and I?"

Madge looked at her youngest daughter in surprise.

"She does keep labelling you as bad or naughty or feather headed."

Josette agreed, somewhat mournfully, this was not a 'crush your sister' moment; more commiserations!

Madge was annoyed. Very annoyed. She was sick of this! Absolutely sick of it! It was as if Joey was saying Madge was a bad mother! It seemed as if Miss Joey had got too big for her boots! It looked like that cine film would be used after all!

The fateful weekend had arrived when Joey was meant to come round.

Joey let Jack enter the house first, she was still uncertain what to expect from her older sister. Madge was all welcoming and lovable. Even Sybil, Josette and Ailie were kissing and hugging everyone.

"Well, this a change for the better!" said Joey, putting her size 6 foot right in it as usual.

The three Russell girls just laughed.

"Mummy has a surprise for you Aunt Joey!" Ailie bounced with glee.

Joey basked in the apparent affection from her niece.

"Well, this makes a change from our last visit! I well remember the time you picked a row with my precious Steve, saying he was too much of a goody two shoes!"

The triplets laughed a most unpleasant laugh at this.

On a previous visit, Ailie had been eager for a playmate of her own age and picked upon her cousin Steve. That young man refused to sully his hands with Ailie's ideas of fun and she had accused him before the whole family of being a "goody two shoes" and a "pansy".

The triplets were however, laughing at Ailie as they remembered the violent telling off she had received from her "beloved" Uncle Jack. The triplets were as bad as their mother as they retailed a lengthy list of Ailie's misdeeds.

Josette and Sybil closed ranks around Ailie and got her out of the room.

"Right! Follow me everyone! I have a surprise for you and for Aunt Joey especially. Come along Joey Baba!"

Joey and her unholy trinity followed her, expecting more praise and pampering. Cecil and Philippa stayed behind with the boys and Felicity trotted after her mother and sisters.

To Joey's astonishment, the room was darkened. Madge directed them to seats and bid them not move a muscle.

Then Madge operated the cine film.

First up was the old scenes of Auntie Margot. Sybil wiped a tear away as she said,

"Auntie Margot said I was a Russell girl! I do miss her!"

Quite tactlessly, Con said, " Well, we never met her, so we can't feel anything! It's like Mamma and Grandpa And Grandma Bettany!"

Madge shot her niece an angry glare, one that Joey noticed. She knew how much her late parents were to Madge and Dick. Joey squirmed uncomfortably. She was about to rebuke Con, when Josette squashed that young lady for her.

"Well Sybil remembers her! So does Daisy! You would do well to remember that! And seeing as how I never met her, but I know Sybs did and she was my Dad's sister, I feel a lot of affection for her; finally, just be thankful one of you is named after her!"

Con wished she had never been born!

Next were shots of Auntie Rob, Auntie Grizel, Auntie Nell, Auntie Con and many many more! Then the piece de resistance arrived!

"Now ! I should like you to see what happens to bad girls at the Chalet School!"

Joey sat bolt upright!

A rude awakening took place in her mind as she saw herself get scolded by the late Mademoiselle Lepattre! Len, Con and Margot stared at their embarrassed mother, jaws open like codfish. Joey turned a shade of beetroot red! Madge smiled.

"Madge!" squeaked Joey.

Madge ignored her.

"Madge!"

Silence.

"Madge please make it stop!" a tearful note crept into Joey's voice.

Madge smiled.

"Madge, why are you doing this?" a note of childish anger this time.

The Joey of old on the cine film was not enjoying her lengthy scolding.

"I'm just showing your daughters how much of a nuisance you could be."

"What had you done Mama?" Len was shocked to the core.

"A little bit of everything she has ever accused Sybil and Ailie of doing! Shall I tell them, Josephine?"

Joey's eyes were glued to the floor in shame.

"Firstly. 'S' for Sybil, it also stands for 'spite' which is what you have accused Sybil of. Yes she was no angel to begin with, but you will keep stirring up the same old stories about her and labelling her!

Len, Con and Margot, do you know why Mlle Lepattre was scolding her? Because your mother intended to rag Grizel. I had sent Grizel with a message to fetch your Mama. Grizel interrupted her whilst she was planning a prank on Margia. So Grizel put a stop to that. What did your Mama do? She tried to get her own back on Grizel! She put a hefty paperweight above a room she knew Grizel was going to next. Had it succeeded, Grizel would have had a serious head injury, if not been killed! All through spite.

The very fact your mother was so full of pranks and that she started the original pranks in the Chalet School hardly gives her the right to take the moral high ground with Ailie! I rest my case!"

"Such wickedness!" exclaimed Len
"Such waywardness!" ejaculated Con
"Such wilfulness!" expostulated Margot

"Oh Mama, how could yuou do it? It's disobedience!" the three chorused, mortified at their mother's sins.

Joey nodded, agreeing with these comments.

"Josephine, stop criticising my girls. They are mine and I love them. Treat them with the love and kindness I treat your girls and as I have treated you. If you think I was a bad mother, how come I sacrificed my childhood to bring you up?"

Joey was defeated.

I made up the incident about Joey setting up a booby trap for Grizel with a paperweight. I just needed a plot. Hope I didn't mislead anybody.

"I know old habits die hard Josephine, but you must make a real effort not to criticise my children. Yours aren't perfect. I heard about Margot and Ted at Zermatt, even if you didn't!"

The triplets wished they had stayed in the other room!

"A report on everything is made to me as owner of the Chalet School. Everything. I have my sources everywhere. That includes when my children cross the line. I knew all about Ailie's exploit in the lost property cupboard and Sybil speaking Regency English, so don't insult my intelligence by thinking 'I shall deal with this, to keep it from Madge' I need to know what goes wrong, who does it and to do the unpleasant task of discipline! I am not the weak creature you seem to have taken me for in recent years!"

Madge was warming to her task now.

"Steve and Charles aren't angels either! Dick and I have had to attend meetings with their Housemasters because of their goings on!"

Joey wanted to sink through the floor. Her daughters moved to comfort her, but she looked angrily at them.

"What happened at Zermatt, Margot? The truth! Now!"

"But"

"This instant!"

Joey was told.

"Then it is no wonder Jack and Hilda didn't tell me, the state I was in after giving birth. I would have reacted exactly the same as I did when Mike went down that ravine! Instead of my illness being Mike's fault, it would have been yours!"

Margot descended into tears. Madge decided to act as peace maker.

"Forgive her Joey. Forgive her. She's your daughter, you must forgive her. I have, Jack has, you must. It just goes to show, none of us are perfect."

It was a subdued Joey and the triplets who returned to the family room and went to dinner that day.

Madge had a final quick word with Joey.

"I do forgive you, I still love you. I should like you to turn up to a Chalet School Reunion I am hosting here. I might play the cine film. If you like, I will cut that scene with you and Therese."

Joey pondered.

"Keep it in Madge. It's a valuable piece of history".
