Post subject:  I am responsible! Honest! 19/3/07 finished

Christmas term for Michael Maynard had finished earlier than his sisters over at the Chalet School.

At this moment, Mike was in two minds. He was looking forward to going home. The musty smell of his otter like form teacher had been too much for him and it was time for home! He had also finally finished that splendid wooden model boat in carpentry. That particular possession had been sent back to Freuedesheim well in advance of the journey. However there was one small problem.

Not for once the school report, exam marks and stories of rambanctious, unruly behaviour going home to Dr Maynard. Mike's preoccupation with his boat had seen to his keeping a low profile during the term. It was that he wouldn't be able to visit his good friends the Embury boys in Montreux. Nor were Steve or Chas around. That holiday they had elected to stay with friends in Scotland and Wales respectively.

Mke knew the implications for this. He would be doing the household chores of three boys, his own homework and be feeling very much in a male minority. Something that always made him feel awkward. Still, Mike reflected, if Margot tried to bait him, he could always go to Len; provided she hadn't gone off somewhere with Reg, Mike thought gloomily.

The ferry docked in Calais. He said farewell to his escort, his French teacher M. Courtois, and was passed to the hands of another escort, Tante Simone.

Was M. Courtois looking at Tante Simone in a funny way? No! He couldn't be! Anyway, Tante Simone was married and Mike was sure M. Courtois was too.

Interlaken, Switzerland at last! Mamma was wild with joy! She will never grow up and I wouldn't want her too! thought Mike. Optimistically he stressed all his good points and the good things he had done at school, taking part in the local charity walks and singing in the choir. Then little Phil ran over to him.

"Mama! She's running! Phil's running!"

Affection in the Maynard / Bettany / Russell clans was usually controlled, but Mike could not contain his joy. All concerns about hoping that Papa would hear about his good efforts at school were swept aside. He picked up his little sister.

After playing with her for half an hour, his father came home. All at once, Mike was worried. Despite his school report, behaviour and extra curricular activities, would Papa still find something to be angry about? In broken sentences he trotted after Jack highlighting how good he had been. He got the occasional non committal, "Yes Mike, Well done Mike, Not bad, Mike" Then a slightly irritated, "Just let Papa sit down for a moment!" Mike shrank back.

Jack Maynard had a few moments alone with his wife. He treasured those moments. It was evening before Mike dared approach his father again. He was crestfallen to see that they were going out. Mike knew that Anna would be looking after them. Until Anna had a most unfortunate accident.

Definitely feeling sorry for Mike - a boy shouldn't be so scared of his father. And what has happened to Anna? And what will it mean for this evening - will Mike be left in charge?

Yes, that was rather impatient of Jack, wasn't it? I know he's only just got home from work - but Mike's not been there for months, you'd think he'd be a little more enthusiastic. Now, if Anna is hurt that wuill mean someone else has to look after the children - how old is Mike here? 12? He will feel very keenly any attempt to give charge to someone else.

Thanks Phil

Unbeknown to his entire family and especially poor Anna, young Geoffrey Maynard had been helping himself to some bananas in the kitchen. He had hidden under the table and on Mike's arrival home had left a litter trail of banana skins.

The result was that the long suffering, kind and loyal Anna slipped on one of the wretched things in a move that would have done credit to any music hall panto and stage slapstick of the Victorian theatre. It was not very funny for Anna, who had to be carted off to the San in pain.

Joey and Jack were left with a dilemma. They could not cancel their night out. This was a personal invitation by the Mayor of Interlaken. Jack had recently treated his daughters. The Mayor easily took offence at the slightest thing and everyone had to tread carefully around him. So Jack and Joey had to attend.

There was every indication that extreme weather was forecast and Jack and Joey had to make a snap decision.

As fate would have it, the telephone lines were down. Why in the name of reason did they never work? Some enterprising Middle had managed to fuse the whole Chalet School switchboard. Thankfuly she did this without frying herself; although once The Abbess had finished with her, she wished she had fried herself.

"Oh why are Neil and Grizel on holiday? Why did Eugen and Biddy both have to fall sick and why did Phil and..."

"Never mind the Graves's or anyone else!" ordered Jack.

"But Jack who will look after the babes?" queried Joey.

It was Mike who piped up. "I can Mama! Honest! I promise!"

Jack looked at his son in astonishment.

"Oh come on Mike!"

"I'm twelve now Papa and I can be responsible!"

"Well, I..."

"You let Len, Con, Margot and Steve and Chas..."

"Allright! But you must do as I say and follow my instructions implicitly! Do you understand? Implicitly!"

"Yes Papa!"

Fifteen minutes later...

"And if Phil feels any cramp in her legs, I've told you what to do! Now there will be feeding, cleaning, bathing and putting the babies to bed!"

Finally, Jack and Joey left Freuedesheim, deep misgivings in their heart. Mike was elated. He was in charge now and he would show Mama, Papa, Len, Con, Margot, Steve and Chas just what a credit he was to them! They would be so happy with him and proud! In his mind's eye he pictured gushing praise from his family.

Sadly fate had other ideas.

"Hurrah! We can do what we like! Oh whacko!!!"

Felix was performing a dance of sheer glee and nearly tripped himself up. Mike grabbed him.

"It means nothing of the sort! We can enjoy ourselves, but the babies have to be looked after. There's no Anna or the trips to do it! Just us!"

Felix's eyes shone with impertinence. Mike did not like that expression on Felix's face. He felt a surge of anger, but with a remarkable effort controlled himself. Mama and Papa had only been gone five minutes.

"Oh well, if you want to be a square!" Felix sauntered away, hands deep in the pockets of his shorts.

Mike ignored this. If that was the best insult Felix could come up with, he could go and eat coke! Off to the kitchen Mike went.

Many were the times he had been shown how to cook for his younger siblings. Although he didn't quite have the patience for it, at least bread and jam was very simple. Other little treats were quite easy to make. Mike became quite absorbed in the kitchen.

He knew the routine of the nursery meals. He had often been sent back to the nursery from the family table to eat if he was being punished. It was strange to actually organise the meals.

"Is that everything?" Mike muttered to himself. Milk? Bread and Jam?

Out came the large nursery tray. Mike had not realised quite how heavy it was when fully laden.

"Felix? Can you get Cecil, Phil and Geoff ready? I've got their meal here!"

Answer came there none.

"Felix?"

Mike certainly felt some irritation and thought Felix was just sulking. He put the tray back in the kitchen and ran upstairs to find a tripwire tied to the top of the stairs. He steeled himself just in time!

As Mike steadied himself, he clumsily staggered to a dresser outside Margot's room. He grabbed at the dresser and nearly knocked an ornate Indian vase flying. Mike gasped in terror. He clutched the vase, a wedding anniversary gift from Uncle Dick and Auntie Mollie! The vase was safe. Quite apart from sentimental value, Mike remembered a Professor Fry visiting once and commenting on the priceless value of the item.

Mike went into Margot's empty room and thumped the bare mattress. He had to relieve his frustration! Felix was just being a pig!

He went to the nursery to get his youngest siblings ready. Felix was conspicious by his absence. "He's probably hiding from me! A wise move!" Mike thought crossly.

Geoff wanted to run round and wrestle and wriggle. He shrieked in protest as Mike washed his face. Little Phil was as good as gold. Cecil was rather trying.

"I want chocolate Mike!"

"Mama says 'I want never gets' Cecil."

"CHOCOLATE!"

Just this once? thought Mike. No! He had to follow Mama and Papa's instructions to the letter. Chocolate might upset her tummy!

"Play Red Indians Mike! Play Red Indians!" cried Geoff performing a small war dance of his own. Geoff's war dance would have had most Cherokees, Sioux, Iroquois and many other native Indians in stitches of laughter.

"Geoff be a good boy, I have to get your meal!"

"Bad Geoff!" said Phil quietly. Geoff looked moderately ashamed.

Mike ran back to where he had left the children's meal on the tray. He hurried back up to the nursery, where he met Felix.

"Duh! You forgot the milk!"

Mike looked at the tray, he was sure he had put it there. Felix poked a suspiciously milky coloured tongue at him.

"Ner ner! Ner ner!"

"Why you little!" Mike grabbed for Felix, but the young imp wriggled like an eel and ran like the wind. Mike stormed downstairs and angrily poured more milk. When he returned, Cecil had a large bar of Austrian chocolate, which she was happily demolishing.

"Felix gave me this! He's a nice brother! I shall tell Papa how nice he is! You're a pig! Maybe that's why Papa is so cross with you all the time!"

"Bad Cecil! Mama said no chocky wocky!" interjected Phil. Cecil gave her a withering "older sister" look.

Mike was now in a storming rage. Geoffrey elected to spit his food in Mike's face for a game, Phil needed slow, calm feeding, Cecil refused all other food, until Mike took the tray downstairs, slammed it into the kitchen and roared, "FELIX!"

It was then he spied a piece of paper saying "Sorry" in capital letters and some sandwiches. Were they smoked ham sandwiches, made with a homemade pickle the recipe of which Anna had not even revealed to Mama?

They were Mike's favourite! (And Jack's!) All anger quickly evaporated as Mike poured a tumbler of water, and sat down to the gorgeous sandwiches! That soft bread of such a texture only made on the continent! Mike missed the continental food of Europe when he was in England! How he missed the rich meats and sauces and sugary cakes!

Mike closed his eyes and was in seventh heaven, he sank his teeth into a sandwich only to discover it was utterly horrid!

Mike coughed and spluttered and spat out the revolting morsel in a manner which would have shocked his entire family. He looked inside the sandwich.

Shoe polish for butter, dog hair, and something that smellt very much like one of Anna's patent cleaning pastes used for the bathroom. What a waste of bread and meat!

"Felix, you pig!" he roared. "When I get hold of you!"

Mike saw his prey giggling at the top of the stairs.

"You little brat!"

Mike steamed towards his quarry. For a moment, Felix looked terrified.

Mike's hands were outstretched. Felix's head was going to look like a red cabbage soon!

Then Felix, Geoff and Cecil threw the water bombs.

Caught by surprise, Mike took a tumble down the stairs where he was drenched to the skin. He barely had time to recover before a hail of shoes descended on him. Papa's shoes, Mama's shoes, Len's shoes, Con's shoes, Margot's shoes, Steve's shoes, Chas's shoes and if that were not enough, his own shoes. He kept trying to raise his head but a fresh hail stopped this. He begged for mercy.

"Stop! Stop! I surrender! Have mercy! This is cruelty! Stop! Please! Stop!"

Felix, Geoff and Cecil laughed and released a wildly barking Bruno to lick Mike's face. Then the naughty threesome stole some cakes from the kitchen and barricaded themselves in the nursery.

"Stop! Stop!" protested Mike. Tears fell down his face now. This was not funny. Without thinking, he went straight to his Mama's writing table and pulled out her telephone book. Under the entry for "The Chalet School" he found: Hilda 863, Rosalie 862, Matey (Gwyneth) 500, Staff room 861.

Mike wanted Len. He just wanted Len. Even Con and Margot would be welcome! Still, Felix had been such a beast, he decided which form of nemesis his little brother should meet. He dialled 863.

Over at the Chalet School, Hilda Annersley ignored the telephone. She was delivering a lecture which she had never bettered to some wicked juniors who had been caught red handed by her out of bed! The iniquitous, weeping madams were sent bedward escorted by a strict and severe looking Matey; then Hilda answered the phone. But it had stopped ringing. Irritated, Miss Annersley turned back to her never ending correspondance.

Little Philippa Maynard had escaped. She tugged at Mike.

"Mike! Toilet! Help!"

Oh no! Poor little Phil had wet herself. Now Mike had to clean and change her. Mike put the telephone down. He groaned, but poor little Phil looked so distressed. Mike was worried what the other young monkeys were up to.

Phiippa was soon dried, changed and happy. Mike had been embarrassed and clumsy and Phil had had to tell him what to do. Even she wore a puzzled frown. "Now story and bed!" she said with determination.

"Lil grey rabbit!"

"Are you sure?"

"Lil grey rabbit Mike!"

The Little Grey Rabbit was read four times and Mike was still uneasy.

"Again!"

Phil was looking more active! A repeat story might stimulate her further!

Suddenly Mike had a brainwave! Mama always sang!

"No Phil, now I sing!"

Thank goodness Mama had coerced him to enter the school choir! Two beautiful lullabies later, Philippa Maynard entered the land of nod. Then Mike heard a splash and a scream!

He tore along to the furthest wing of the house where the bathrooms were! He wrenched the door open and was horrified to see....

Felix, Geoff and Cecil had gained entry to Auntie Stacie's wing of the house (she was at her cousin's wedding in Oxford) and the bathroom was a mess! In the bath in red water, Cecil lay still!

Mike let out a squawk of horror! Had his sister met a bloody end in a bath?

Cecil rose from the water and laughed maniacally.

"Only red dye!" She held up a bottle of dye.

Mike collapsed into tears there was nothing else to do.

"Len! Please come and stop them! Len! Len! Len!"

All Mike Maynard could think of was the comforting words of his eldest sister.

Sadly Len was not telepathic. At that moment she paying attention to a lecture by Miss Wilson on the Andes. Neither Con nor Margot were blessed with Extra Sensory Perception. Those two ladies were exchanging jokes in the prefects common room unaware of their brother's plight.

Cecil looked and felt guilty. When Geoff burst in laden with cream cakes, shouting, "Cakey! Cakey!" she paid no heed. She stared at her dripping wet, ruined pyjamas and mumbled her apologies. Head hung in shame, she wandered to her room to wash, change and go to bed.

Then Geoff had a tummy ache and he threw up over Mike. He didn't like this and was tired and wanted to go to bed.

Mike no longer cared, but with a superhuman effort, he dragged himself up and took Geoff to be washed and put to bed. He was wise enough to give Geoff a little dose of something to settle his tummy.

How he cleaned the mess in the bathroom, Cecil's little footprints and goodness knows what else, Mike never knew. He then went Felix hunting.

The little villain of the piece had gone to bed and locked the door of his bedroom. Mike banged the door with what strength he had left. Frightened his parents wouldn't believe him, he wanted someone with him to help explain the whole disaster. He couldn't take any more. All he thought of were his triplet sisters. Any one of them would do! He was too tired to phone the school, but oddly enough, he felt he could still walk the short distance from Freuedesheim to the Chalet School. Mike reached the door and collapsed.

It was half past two in the morning when Jack unlocked the door, opened it and bumped straight into his son. Mike was very cold from the draught. Unfortunately, Jack had indulged in the odd glass of red wine. So had Joey.

"Mike, get up! Stop being silly! You're too old to play Rufus now!" said Jack crossly.

"MIKE!" barked Jack.

"Jack, I think he's asleep! I'll get him a pillow and a blanket!" was Joey's useful contribution.

It was then that little Phil came running down the stairs. She shrieked as she saw Mike's comatose body.

"Oh poor Mike! Bad Felix must have killed him!"

Jack scooped Phil up in his arms.

"What do you mean my pet?"

What Jack and Joey Maynard heard next made their jaws drop with horror.

"And Geoff says Cecil had a red bath in Auntie Stacie's room and he ate cakey and got tummy ache and..."

Bruno had wandered over to Joey who was looming over Mike. Bruno licked his face. Mike started to come to. He saw the welcoming face of his mother and cried as if he were a baby once again. It took Joey and Jack a good ten minutes to calm him down.

"Now come on Mike...This isn't like you my little man! Tell us all about it son...Mama's here...It's all over lad...Don't cry."

Jack was about to eat a tasty looking ham sandwich, but offered it to his son, who recoiled in horror.

"Come on Mike! It's your favourite!"

"That's the thing Felix made! Don't eat it Papa!"

Jack was about to take a bite.

"I told him not to bite Mama! You heard me! Please Mama!" sobbed Mike as Jack raced to the toilet to spit out the awful sandwich.

Just then, Matey and Miss Annersley arrived in mighty wrath. Between them, they held a small, wriggling, uncomfortable, Felix.

"Caught sneaking into Felicity's dormitory to regale her with tales of wickedness as we understand!" growled Matey.

"Apparently this is not the first time Felix and Felicity have met up after dark!" This young scoundrel is an enterprising young criminal! He has a rope ladder which he escapes from his room and through a system of codes, Felicity opens her window and lets down another ladder to let him in!" Miss Annersley was beside herself with anger.

"Rope ladders? That Christmas present from Madge and Jem?" Joey said, light beginning to dawn on her red wine addled brain cells. Outrage soon sobered her up!

"Felix! How could you? Just wait until Auntie Madge hears of this! Hilda, I am so sorry! Once Felicity faces Madame..."

"We shall speak about this in the morning Josephine!"

"Just you wait until your Father gets here, young man!" Joey said coldly to Felix.

Jack stormed onto the scene. Looking at Felix he said in a voice quaking with anger.

"First we shall put Mike to bed. He will have a nasty cold in the morning thanks to you. Then you will go straight to bed and we shall deal with you in the morning!"

Mike was now delirious. As he was put to bed and drank one of his father's sleeping draughts, he kept muttering, "Tried to be responsible! Honest! I tried! Please believe me! Mama! Papa! Please bel..."

Felix started to feel guilty. What fate awaited him tomorrow?

Nemesis followed that morning. Mike had been coughing and sneezing during the night. Felix could not bear to look him in the eye. Felix was dressed in his formal school uniform. A sign of disgrace. He squirmed in his shorts. Mama eyed him coldly.

"Before your father and I deal with your disgraceful behaviour last night, we are due at Auntie Hilda's to explain this rope ladder business you and Felicity have been up to! Mike is coming too since he is the wronged party in this affair!"

Oh no! Thought Felix! To be scolded by Auntie Hilda was bad enough! But at the Chalet School! Hopefully it would be in the privacy of her office and not before the whole school! Felix goggled in horror. He had to be dragged through the gate and step by step. His courage failed him as he gradually got closer to the school and he saw the Annexe where Auntie Hilda lived and had her office. The triplets were waiting with a tearful Felicity. Margot held the evidence in her hands (Felicity's rope ladder), Con held onto Felicity and Len looked very severe. Joey knocked on the door.

"Herein!"

Hilda Annersley smiled as she greeted Mike, Joey and the triplets. The latter were not deceived by Miss Annersley's warm greeting, but Felix was! Maybe it would only be a light scolding after all...

"Now young man, what do you mean by trespassing on school property and disturbing the sleep of the girls in my care?" thundered Miss Annersley, steel grey eyes piercing into Felix's wicked mind.

Even the triplets jumped back, momentarily frightened by Auntie Hilda in full flow!

"I...I...I...I'm sorry, Auntie Hilda."

"MISS ANNERSLEY if you don't mind!"

"Sorry Miss Annersley."

"Well?"

"Well, Felicity and I are twins and our school terms don't begin and finish at the same time, so we like to keep in contact if I come home earlier than she does. Auntie Madge had given us some rope ladders for last Christmas and as Felicity's dormitory is on the first floor, we arranged she would have one and I would have the other. "

"I see. Margot did you find anything else in Felicity's dormitory?"

"Nothing except the rope ladder Miss Annersley. That was well hidden under the outside of the window sill, with some very convenient hooks! I instigated a thorough search as you ordered, but found nothing else."

"Thank you Margot. I suppose it is no coincidence, that last night I caught some juniors out of bed, well Felicity?"

Felicity broke down.

"It's that horrid new girl Emma Bayshaw! She found my rope ladder and started to gossip. I had to let her and her friends in on the secret! She's such a nosey parker!"

"Language, Felicity!"

Miss Annersley eyed the Maynard twins with displeasure.

"It seems you cannot be trusted. Either of you.You have let yourselves, your family, your school and me down. I am very disappointed in you both. Felix, you are banned from entering the Chalet School premises unless accompanied by a responsible adult. If this happens again, I shall call your father straight away. Felicity, you will spend the remainder of the term in the charge of the prefects. You also lose your privileges for that period. Be thankful I am not excluding you from the forthcoming Christmas production. Both of you, more Felix I suspect will have to face your father. I don't envy you young man."

By this stage, Felix and Felicity were weeping like waterspouts. Joey took the rope ladder from Margot.

"Now you two, listen to me! These are going straight back to Auntie Madge and Uncle Jem with a letter from you both explaining why you don't deserve them and how you abused these presents! Felix you can also explain to Auntie Madge why you were trespassing on her school! It may be the family own the school, but that does NOT give you the right to take liberties with it! It's your bad luck that Auntie Madge and Uncle Jem are coming to watch the Christmas show. They will have words with you then!"

Felix nearly collapsed with horror!

They were about to leave, when Mike asked Miss Annersley a question.

"Please Aunt...Miss Annersley, I tried to telephone last night, for help. I was having such a bad time with babysitting..."

Miss Annersley shot a look at the guilty Felix. So did the triplets, this was news to them!

"The phone only rang when I was dealing with those juniors...Mike, was it you? But what on earth was going on?"

Struggling against the tide of emotion, Mike said,

"I just wanted Len or Con or Margot to help! It was terrible what Felix was doing and he was getting Geoff and Cecil to misbehave. I was trying my best and..."

Joey gave a concise resume of what happened. The sandwich, the water bombs, the tripwire, the shoe throwing, the bath. The triplets stared at Felix goggle eyed and mouths open like fish. Even Felicity looked shocked.

"Felix! You little monster! How could you?"
"You utter beast!"
"How Mike kept his temper with you, you young scoundrel..."
"Oh Felix! You didn't really did you!"

Felix hung his head in shame. Mike took a deep breath. Con went over to him.

"Never mind Mike, It's not your fault, you've still got your model boat you made! You can sail that at..."

"The model boat!" Felix gasped. Something had happened to that boat!

"Felix! What have you done with Mike's boat?" Joey's voice took on a dangerous tone!

"I made that boat for Dad to be proud of me!"

Joey and daughters fixed Felix in their eyes like a predator unto its prey.

"Felix Nicholas Maynard!"

"WHERE is Michael's boat?"

"I...I...I...well Mike was coming back later than me, sorry later than I and I thought his boat was wasted in his room, so I took it to the flooded ditch at the bottom of the garden."

"That treacherously muddy area with deep water, which your father and I have expressly forbidden all of you to approach?"

Felix nodded.

"It only sank near the edge, I didn't meant to knock it over, I slipped and a rock hit it, then it capsized and I tried to get it, but it sank so quickly. I thought Mike would forget about it if I kept him busy and last night was too good an opportunity to miss for a bit of fun and...and...and..."

Felix faltered. He could not bear to meet the eyes of his mother and sisters.

"You horrid pig! I wish you weren't my twin brother! Ugh! Mama! I am so sorry I used the rope ladder to escape from school! Please forgive me! I shall take whatever punishment you say!"

Joey's attention turned to Felicity. "Miss Annersley's punishment is sufficient and I know for a fact your elder sisters will ensure you keep out of mischief!"

"Yes. You will be cleaning out the gym and games equipment for some time!" said Margot

"You will be making sure all the fiction and non-fiction in the school library is in the correct order under my supervision!" snapped Con

"And have I got a Head Girl's punishment for you!" was Len's only chilling comment.

The triplets would have dearly liked to deal with Felix, but had to be content to tell him what they thought of him. His forthcoming interview with Papa would be something very unpleasant!

As a rule, the triplets were very keen to see fair play amongst their younger siblings. In this they were backed by Steve and Chas, but as those two respectable young men were absent, they simply told Felix how disgusted they were with him. Hopefully this would shame him back to normality. Once the dreadful interview with Papa would be over, forgiveness would come like an angel from Heaven.

Once the location of Mike's precious boat was known, Gaudenz was sent on a top secret mission to rescue the stricken vessel. With some careful cleaning by members of the hobbies club and some skilled work in miniature railings, mast and rigging, Mike's boat looked as good as new, perhaps even better. With Matey's permission a bath was filled to see if the ship floated. All was well and more than one enterprising young middle became determined to build a model boat herself!

The search to find the boat had brought a hidden benefit to Miss Annersley, the development of a miniature pond and landscaped surround where the girls could enjoy painting or relax in the cool shade. The end result of future development was so attractive that when the ubiquitous Mary Lou turned up for one of her not infrequent "surprise" visits, she felt a stab of jealousy that she hadn't been involved with such a fascinating project.

But all this was to be in the days to come. Felix was escorted home and confined to his room to await Judge Jury and Executioner in the form of Papa. Meanwhile Mike had the pleasure of Mama's attention and little Phil fussing over him; whilst the bed ridden, tummy ache stricken, Cecil and Geoff made tearful apologies.

Jack's loving greeting to his wife brought a shiver down Felix's spine. That tone of voice would soon disappear once Papa came to visit! Jack took his time. The news of the lost boat hurt him more than it did Mike, he was besotted with his son's work when it had arrived! He had a good meal, talked calmly to Mike and Felix heard the heavy determined footfall of Papa on the stairs.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't send you straight back to school to spend your holidays there!" growled Jack as he eyed the miscreant.

"Why did you do it Felix? That's not good enough? What sort of excuse is that? Of all the stupid little boys? How could you be so babyish!"

Scorn was poured on the young Felix's head and once the painful punishment was over - it felt like eternity to Felix - Jack departed, leaving Felix in tears and weeping for mercy.

Mike had not enjoyed overhearing that punishment. He knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of Papa's discipline all too often.

He was astonished to hear his father's next words.

"Now we must make it up to you Mike, what about some sort of treat?"

Jack was thinking Mike might want a comic or some boy's latest craze toy or a visit to the cinema. He was astonished to hear his son's request.

"I want to go for a nice long walk with you and Bruno please Papa."

Jack Maynard rarely had time to spare. He felt he could never let go of his beloved San and doing God's work for the health of the people. His family life and love was Joey and only Joey. The only reason he was more accessible to his daughters was for the sole reason they went to the school next door and the school was a family enterprise. Had Len, Con, Margot and now Felicity gone to school in England or Australia or anywhere else, Jack would only have seen them during the holidays.

This did not mean that Jack Maynard did not love his children. His instilling obedience into them was to bring them up so they would not reach the same fate as tragic Rolf Maynard. An act of love on his part. He only ever mentioned to Joey his sheer terror of his children coming to harm. He had felt sick when Len nearly burned in her costume and he was mortally terrified that he could not relieve Charles' appendicitis, his mind was full of fears of worst case scenarios if anything bad happened. Jack had felt bitterly rejected by Margot and a failure when he heard of her bullying Ted Grantley and likewise when hearing of Mike's disobedience in climbing down a ravine, causing Joey to faint; Jack had felt a failure and rejection by his son. Even though he was a fully grown man, those feelings of hurt, rejection and fear did not go away. Jack's worst fear along with losing Joey, was the visit by a colleague or a policeman or a relative to say that one of his children had met a tragic end.

Jack decided to bite the bullet. Maybe each of his children would a like a solitary walk with him and Bruno discussing all their worries and hopes with him. Maybe that is just what they always wanted? Why not start with Mike? The San wouldn't fall down without him! Phil, Eugen, Neil and Reg were excellent colleagues! Good grief! They would probably be glad to be rid of him! The Chalet School will be quite allright without him; and if some silly middle decides to lose her marbles and run away in a fit of pique, then Mary Lou would always catch her.

Jack pondered this last thought. Did Mary Lou actually have an archaelogy course to go to? Did she ever do any work at St Mildred's? Or did she live in the trees like a woodland fairy? Forever on the lookout for naughty fallen Chalet School Girls, whom she could rescue and reform? Perhaps Mary Lou was one of those mythical trees that changed to human form? Jack banished these thoughts reprimanding himself to lay off the scotch.

His thoughts went back to the hopeful expression in Mike's face which was rapidly fading.

"Sorry Papa, I didn't mean to sound selfish, we can all go as a family if you like, I can wait until the weekend when the triplets are back, or I can have a chat with Len if you are working."

The drained tone of voice did not escape Dr Maynard.

"Wait Mike! Wait! I haven't said no, have I?"

Mike shook his head. But he was used to constant let downs.

"I think you have hit the nail right on the head my boy. How does a nice early morning walk sound? You, Bruno and I!"

Mike thought he had died and gone to heaven!

"In fact, I shall arrange to have walks with each of you individually! You shall be the first one!"

The big day dawned. Mike was washed, prepared and had Bruno and Bruno's lead attached. Bruno raised a quizzical canine eyebrow. Mike coming as well? Bruno knew how much Jack treasured those "doggy moments" when they would howl together and play "fetch". Oh well, if Mike was going to join in the howling and fetching, the more the merrier!

Jack Maynard as a man of his word arrived for the grand walk. He would have to try and remember to be adult in front of his son and not sing "doggy songs" in the "doggy" voice he knew Bruno loved. If Joey and the kids knew the silly voice in which Jack spoke to Bruno on his own, he would lose all respect from his family and everyone would know about it! The staff and pupils of the Chalet School, his work colleagues, his in-laws! No. Definitely no silly voices today, Jack Maynard.

The door was shut. Upstairs in her room, Len heard her father and Bruno depart. She looked out of the window and was astonished to see Mike accompanying Papa! How did he manage to wangle that?

"Mama? Where is Mike going? He's never up this early!"

Joey gave a knowing smile.

"It's a new tradition your father is implementing. He has recognised he doesn't get to speak to all of you as individuals. So, he's taking Mike for a walk and a chat. Don't worry, you and your sisters shall get your own individual Papa time!"

Len felt a warm glow of affection for her father!

Meanwhile, on the walk,

"So Mike! Ah, up this path, away from the schools. Don't want Mary Lou or someone to leap out upon us! It's just us and Bruno. No middles getting their silly ankles broken!"

"I like Mary Lou."

"That's good! She's been very kind to you and your sisters and brothers."

"She's like an older brother. She's not a Mama or Papa, but she even helps Len and Steve and she knows about boys, she knows Tony. Sometimes I think we are a bit of a mystery to even Len."

"Yes, I suppose Mary Lou knowing young Tony Barras would give her an insight to boys Len might not have. Len only knows her cousins and little brothers. It can be a tremendous strain being the eldest."

"Woof!"

Bruno broke into a run.

Apologies for late update. I have been as sick as a parrot.

"Papa. I do find it difficult at times, trying to make myself heard at home. I don't want to be selfish and I know it's bad, but sometimes, nobody can see how I think."

"Woof woof went the puppy wuppy one day, woof woof went the..."

"PAPA???"

"Sorry Mike. Yes. You were saying, Mr Meadows at school was very impressed with your maths test."

"That was ten minutes ago Papa! And Mr Meadows teaches History, he wouldn't be seen anywhere near a maths books than Con!"

"But we know little doggies sing tra la la la la la!"

Mike stopped dead in his tracks. Did Papa really want him on this walk? Was he listening? Did he really care? He felt a surge of disrespect for his father. He wanted to be rude, he wanted to say something silly, but that wold earn him more punishment and disgrace! Tears of frustration percolated down his cheeks. He kicked a nearby tree. And his father was still singing some stupid song about little doggies! He was even singing in a very silly voice!

"They said I would possibly make a middle school prefect!" His last appeal was strangulated to a squeak by his strong emotions.

"The doggy went over the mountain, the doggy went over the mountain.."

Suddenly, Mike couldn't take any more.

"OH WHAT DO YOU CARE! MARY LOU LISTENS TO US FAR MORE THAN YOU EVER DO! THAT'S WHY I LIKE HER SO MUCH! BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO KNOW! SHE WANTS TO HELP! I WISH SHE WERE MY MOTHER AND FATHER!"

Disgusted, Mike turned on his heel and stormed away. Yes, he had lost his temper, he would admit that to Mary Lou, but he would also explain why in his forthcoming epistle to her.

Jack Maynard had heard this last tirade of despair and was astonished. He hadn't been listening! He had been singing his silly dog songs! A surge of guilt ran through his body. Terrible guilt and shame.Jack was furious with himself. He had always felt he was an excellent father, but now his deficiencies were obvious. Had he been too strict in the past? Had he left Mary Lou to run the family whilst he kept Joey "busy"?

"Mike! Mike! Wait! Please! Michael! Let's sit down and talk! I promise I shall listen!"

Silence.

"Mike. I'm not cross. I'm very sorry I wasn't listening. Mike? Where are you?"

Silence.

Jack found his son sitting on a tree stump, his back to his father and looking the picture of loneliness. Bruno waddled beside Jack. Mike looked up at his father, his tear filled eyes shone bright blue, so like Margot in her moods of old. Mike's shock of curly yellow hair seemed to bristle with emotion.

"I'm sorry. I just got carried away. I always sing to Bruno on our special walks. Don't I old boy?"

Bruno licked Mike's face. Jack wiped it clean with his own handkerchief.

"I made a mistake my son. please forgive your daft Papa. Did you like the songs anyway?"

Mike smirked. "They were very silly Papa, but funny!"

"Here's another. Bruno and I howl like wolves at the end. WHy don't you join us?"

So, father, son and dog enjoyed ten minutes of singing and howling.

What Jack learnt from Mike in the next forty five minutes shocked him to the core.

Many thanks for all the good wishes. I'm much better, thanks!

Jack Maynard was given a thorough reading of his character. He was shocked to discover that even the most well meaning, strict but kind father makes mistakes. He was now listening to quite a lecture from his third son on the effect of his style of parenting!

"It's exams! Exams! Exams! All the time! I know they are important! I can do them standing on my head, that is why I get so bored in lessons! Horribly bored! But they aren't everything! I want to be sailing! I want to be with boats! I want to be learning about my future job! I want to experience the navy papa!"

Mike looked anxiously at Jack to see if he was listening and not signing silly dog songs. Thankfullly, Jack was all ears!

"Steve and Chas feel the same way, but they bottle everything up! Both of them! I have to let things out! That's why I do the things I do! I could never stay bottled up forever! There's never any time to talk! We can't even talk to Len or Con or Margot!"

"Why can't you talk to your sisters?"

Mike rolled his eyes. Patiently and quietly he said,

"Even though we know we must always help around the house and make ourselves useful, something always happens. Len is either out with a new friend or new adopted sister or brevet sister, Con is then given all the tinies to look after, you are away at work, Margot is doing the meding or laundry or house keeping, Steve is doing the garden and Chas is chopping up firewood or collecting coal and I have some task or other. There is never any time to relax and talk! meals are so formal we're afraid of upsetting you or Mama and then we all try and talk at once and it becomes a shouting match! It's not right!"

Jack gasped. Put like that, the family was dysfunctional. There was a new addition virtually every term. Usually it was the latest reformed bad girl from the Chalet School. Couldn't somebody else look after her? Then having eleven children was perhaps a bit too much? But Joey liked her fun! As for hearing that Mary Lou had become a surrogate parent or confidant to Mike, was too much for Dr Maynard. Were his two older sons really bottling things up? No wonder they seemed so reluctant to come home! They enjoyed staying with Uncle Dick. Apart from little Daphne Bettany, all the children had left home and Dick and Mollie were delighted to lavish attention on their nephews.

"The other night papa, when I was babysitting. I tried to show you I was responsible! That you could trust me! I wanted to show you at home the responsible things I had done at school! The stuff I told you in letters. You would then always write back going on about exams! I was being responsible that night, but Felix decided on other plans, He wanted to break free and be as naughty as he could! I can see why he did it! I wanted a chance to show how good I am and he wanted to play with no one to stop him!"

Jack shuddered with guilt. All he wrote about were quick cursory notes to his boys about exams. He merely skimmed their letters. He remembered now passing a lot for Mary Lou to read. She must have been writing to the boys! Thinking about them more than he did!

"Michael, I am so sorry! How on earth can I make it up to you?"

"Well, this walk was good. I think we should have lots more walks, we can tell you about the good things and we can even sing Bruno songs together."

Jack nodded. They reached Freuedesheim; Mike relating the livelier aspects of the term to his father. Mike made the school come alive with his narrative, not a far away place as it previously seemed! jack could almost smell the freshly mown grass of a school cricket square and the bleached chemistry labs and the ... well, never mind.

Len ran out to greet them.

"Hello you two! Had a good walk? What did you talk about?"

Jack and Mike looked at each other.

Jack caught sight of an ashen faced Felix at his bedroom window. Jack beckoned for the boy to come down!

This Felix did with much apprehension. He wasn't sure he was forgiven yet! He had already heard the opinions of his triplet sisters and twin sister on his wicked actions, and they were not opinions he cared to incur again!

The accused prisoner shuffled forwards to his father, not sure if he were going to be hanged or not. But Jack Maynard had had his eyes opened to his apparent neglect.

"Well, young man. That was quite a merry dance you led your brother the other night!"

"I'm so sorry Mike! I really am sorry!"

"I know. I forgive you. It's all over."

"Good boys!. Well, let me tell you something young Felix. Papa will be making more of an effort to talk to you all. Mike and I have had a lovely chat and I feel I understand him better. I hope I can do the same with all your brothers and sisters!"

A sparkle of hope glinted in Felix's eyes! Every cloud really did have a silver lining!

"Papa, does this mean we all get a chance to go for a walk with you?" asked the incredulous Len.

"Each of you, individually."

Jack's word was enough for his elated children. and it had come through Mike's valiant battle to prove he was responsible.
