This was written for the Derbyshire gather - the guidelines being that the drabble should include hills, sheep and well dressing.

“I know it’s here somewhere.” A voice muttered from the depths of the cupboard. There was a clatter and some banging, an ouch and a few words that were unfamiliar to the Chalet girls waiting outside the under-stage storage space.

“What did she say?”

“I’m not sure, I don’t think it was German though.”

There was a giggle “Shame mistresses don’t get to pay fines for not speaking German on a German day.”

The girls quietened as a rather dusty figure, with a smudge of grime on her left cheek and a rip in her sleeve emerged, dragging something covered in cobwebs behind her.

“Here you are girls. It’ll need a bit of cleaning up of course, and perhaps a bit of paint, but after that it should be good as new. Now is that all that you needed?”

“I think so. Thank you Miss Burnett.”

The girls manhandled the rather filthy object along to the art room, taking care not to get too much dirt on their uniforms, all too aware of what Matey would have to say if they did. Once there they put on their art overalls, nobody really bothered about the state that they were in, and set to work to clean up and then re-decorate.

“I can’t believe this has been kept from the first sale.”

“It was a fairytale one. Mamma said they had a wishing well.”

“Well it’s just as well it was well-made or it wouldn’t have lasted until now. Who’s going to be Pussy by the way, do you know?”

“I’m not sure – one of the Juniors. Miss Andrews will probably organise that.”

“What are we having for the other stalls?”

“We’ve got Little Jack Horner’s corner, which will have refreshments in it. Then there’s the Maid of Hearts’ stall for selling cakes and so on. Matey’s doubled her usual contribution of jam, I don’t know how she does it.”

“Apparently, when she’s in a jam-making spree she gets the naughty middles to peel/stone fruit for her instead of turning sheets side-to-middle.”

“If you could eat the fruit as well it would almost be worth it.”

“I don’t see Matey letting them get away with that. Anyway, speaking of Matey, she’s going to be manning the first-aid tent.”

“Where’s that going to be?”

“At the bottom of Jack and Jill’s hill of course. With Jack and Jill to help her.”

“Oh, of course. Then we’ve got the other hill for the Grand Old Duke of York. That’s going to be just through the gate to Freudesheim, so the men go up and down it to get to the clock golf and so on.”

“And don’t forget we’ve got Little Bo Peep and her sheep for the Lost Property table. And Baa Baa Black Sheep for the needlework and so on. Right, I think this is well is dressed, so-to-speak.” The group of girls stood back to admire their handiwork.

“We’ll leave it now to dry and by tomorrow morning it’ll be ready for Gaudenz to put into place.”

They left the artroom and returned to report their job done, all knowing that the Nursery Rhyme Sale was going to be the best one ever.
