#1: Gem Saves the Day Author: CBB Secret Santa PostPosted: Tue Dec 06, 2005 10:48 pm

It had been a long day for Gem. Work had been a nightmare, and all she wanted to do when she got home was to curl up in bed and go to sleep. But, her hunger had to be sated, and so whilst eating a light supper, she indulged herself by reading a few chapters of New Mistress (obtained from Betula), one of her favourite books.

As she read the book, a frown came to her lips. How did Mary-Lou know that something was going to happen? It made no sense. It was probably EBD's idea of a miracle or something. It was at this point that Gem yawned so hugely that she nearly swallowed the book, and thus decided it was time to sleep.

-----------------------

Gem shivered, it suddenly seemed to be a lot colder than it had been, and there was a queer sourish smell in the air. It was when she opened her eyes that she realised why. She wasn't in her bed anymore, she was fairly sure that she wasn't even in the same country anymore. But where was she?

Voices that seemed to be coming from a distance gave her a clue, and as she peered out from behind the rocks she'd somehow ended up near, her eyes widened.

"Do you think it's true?"

Gem heard the words, words that she'd read what seemed like minutes earlier. Her eyes took in the mass of girls in gentian blue ski-suits, along with the older woman in green (it didn't appear to be lime, but it was hard to make out the exact colour at this distance).

"Oh, bugger." she said to herself in a low voice (knowing that a whisper would carry further). "I've ended up in New Mistress - at least, I hope it's New Mistress." She paled a little (not quite still, grey and to all appearances, as she was still moving, but grey, definitely) as she remembered Uto punishing various CBBers for gloating, including getting caught in an avalanche of her own writing and getting shot. "But I haven't been gloating, well, not this year that I can remember, and I can't remember a drabble like this anyway."

While she'd been thinking, the party across the other side of the glacier were preparing to leave. "Ooooh!" thought Gem. "I wonder if it's as exciting as in the book. Maybe I can even see why Mary-Lou turned round.

She watched with wide eyes as the girls started to make their way back to the Gasthaus, and Kathie took her last look round the glacier. Then her ears caught an ominous creak, and she realised that it must be the sound of the earth starting to give way. But Mary-Lou wasn't turning, Kathie was going to be flung into the crevasse, to almost certain death, unless someone...

Instantly Gem reacted, putting two fingers in her mouth and giving a piercing whistle. Mary-Lou and Hilary turned to see where the sound was coming from, and realising the earth was failing, grabbed hold of Kathie just in the nick of time to save her from her grisly fate.

Gem felt strangely weak after that, and tired. But as she dozed off again, under her duvet (which was somehow still with her, she never did figure that out.), her last thought was "So that's how Mary-Lou knew. It was me all along." As with a satisfied sigh, she again slipped into her slumbers.

Hope you enjoy it Gem
Love Santa

That was very good!

how about this version: Gem's whistle causes or worsens the avalanche (thus making the problem worse) Mary-Lou looks around 'cause something's going to happen because she's scarily psychic with a crystal ball (thus saving the day anyway) Laughing Laughing
moral of the story: thou shalt not meddle or do not read when tired and stressed it causes hugely dangerous leaps of imagination Smile

that's a better explanation don't you think?

*posts with trepidation*
*hides behind the sofa before any retaliations* Confused
