Part 1 of 2 or 3

‘SQUEEEEEE!!!!!’ shrieked Sugarplum, bouncing around the office.
‘I’ve won, I’ve won!!’
‘What have you won? asked her colleague Alison. Alison shared the desk next door to her.
‘I’ve won a trip to Switzerland to have Christmas lunch with my favourite Author M. Constance Maynard!’

All work had stopped in the office to hear Sugarplum’s good news.

‘That is fantastic!!’
‘When do you go?’
‘What part of Switzerland?’

Over the sound of the babble a voice could be heard asking ‘What competition did you enter?’

Sugarplum turned to face the boss, Tony Rosomon, a dark handsome Mr Darcy look alike.
She blushed.
Long had she fancied him.
‘I bought her latest book ‘A Cavalier Maid’ and saw they were running a competition to win an audience with her. I thought they had drawn it long before now.’

Mary-Lou, the boss’s secretary, snatched the envelope.
‘Oh no wonder it took so long! Look at the postmarks. It’s been to Blackpool, Cheltenham, Australia and Wales!
Oh, come on! It can’t have been to Wales! The post office these days!
I’m surprised it didn’t get lost in the Christmas mail!’

The other office staff just looked at Mary-Lou with expressions of distaste. She was such a know- it –all!
If every office had a grapevine, Mary -Lou was theirs.

‘So when do you go?’
‘Next week if Tony will let me have the time off?’

Sugarplum looked at the boss. Tony Rosomon smiled. There was something in that smile that was just for her. ‘Of course you can, my dear. These chances come once in a lifetime don’t they?’

I can deliver many trillions of gifts in one night, but can't log on to one computer!! It told me secret santa was invalid! I ask you! Well if you don't believe in me, you don't get a christmas gift.

I'm sure Sugarplum believes...

It was snowing when Sugarplum got to the Platz. Real white powdery snow. Just right. And not a blizzard on the horizon. A large limousine had been waiting for her at the Station, full of all the little luxuries that radiated care and comfort, right down to the heated floor mats and chilled champagne with strawberries.

The car drew to a halt and the door was flung open to reveal an elderly woman with her grey hair arranged in flat shells above her ears.
‘Welcome to Freudesheim!! I am Joey Maynard, the first ever pupil of the chalet school. Better Known as J.M. Bettany. I’m sure you have read my books. What! You aren’t in uniform? Then you must be a new mistress, or a nurse for the San….’

Sugarplum looked dumfounded at this woman. Sure, she remembered all the books this woman claimed to have written. They were the ones that you never confessed to even to your best friend that you had read them as a child.

So this was M. Constance Maynard’s Mother? Good Lord!
‘Now now, Aunt Joey, come in and let Sugarplum warm up. I’ll arrange for tea to be brought immediately into the Saal. Please wait for us there’
the middle aged woman turned to Sugarplum.

‘Welcome my dear. I am Dr Daisy Venables. I’m sorry about Aunt Joey. She began to lose her marbles the day Con’s first book hit the number one best seller and has never been the same since. Aunt Joey only ever had a book in the top ten- at number ten for one week. I think it was fortunate that Uncle Jack spent so much of his later life at the San and didn’t see her at her worst. He tended to come home and spend just enough time to give Aunt Jo a dose to keep her quiet. Or to keep her 'busy'’

‘Anna, ANNA, Tea and Cakes please! And don’t forget to take Bruno for a walk’, the voice came from the Saal.

‘Both Anna and Bruno have been gone for 25 or more years now. Some days Joey remembers, but when she gets excited she gets worse. I can now understand why Uncle Jack relied so heavily on medication.’

‘CON!’ Daisy called, Sugarplum is here’

‘COMING!! Shrieked a voice from behind a heavy oak door. The door opened to reveal a woman whose dark hair was tied back in a long plait, soft dark brown eyes that were partially hidden by glasses. Her hands were covered in black streaks from re inking the printer cartridge.

‘Welcome Sugarplum!’ Connie thrust a rather inky hand out ‘Oh drat it! I can never get it right. Please don’t mind the ink. I’m a hopeless Klutz with anything practical’
Sugarplum returned the greeting, rather liking this unusual woman.
Connie turned to Daisy ‘Was that Mother I heard before?’
Daisy sighed. ‘Yes, I think her medication has worn off again. I’ll just go to see to it.’

Sugarplum and Connie were left alone ‘Come on. I’ll show you where your room is and leave you to get settled. Once Mother has gone to bed it will be easier to talk. We’ll be having Christmas Eve drinks tonight, with some of our friends and neighbours.
Tomorrow is Christmas Day and we will be having all of the family that live close for lunch. You look tired. It is a hard journey here in winter, and to have the first person you meet to be mother on a bad day… ' Connie's eyes twinkled like christmas lights 'I’ll leave you to rest shall I?
Drinks will be at 7 pm in the Saal’

Ho Ho! Nice to Know that Lesley believes in me!

Santa has worked out NOT to put caps lock on while attempting to enter password. It must be the alcohol floating round the board

Last post.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas Sugarplum and that 2006 is all you could hope for!

Sugarplum slept late- she needed it after meeting with Joey!

Most of the guests had arrived by the time she came down to the Saal that evening.
Connie introduced the rest of the guests to Sugarplum.

‘My sister Len and her husband Dr Reg Entwistle. Reg is now head of the San. Charles, Mike, Felix, Felicity, Cecil, Alice, Rose, John, Pierre, Paul and Albert.
Felix and John are doctors and Rose and Albert are nurses. You’ve met Daisy, this is her husband Laurie and these are Mary, Peter and Tony, who I believe you already know.’
Seated in the corner was Tony Rosomon. Sugarplum’s mouth fell open.

‘Yes, Sugarplum and I already know each other’, he said. ‘Champagne?’ Tony handed her a glass.

Seeing that everyone else was engaged in their own chatter Tony took her to one side.

'What are you doing here?'
‘Connie is my cousin by marriage and was always kind to us when we were children.
I heard you telling Alison in the office that you had entered the competition and how much you admired Connie’s writing.
I knew the competition ended months ago and I knew you hadn’t won so I asked Connie a favour.'
Tony continued in a rush 'I have to admit I had wanted to ask you out for ages, but didn’t have the courage to do it, especially as Mary- Lou would tell the entire world.'
'I thought I'd give you a Christmas to remember- particularly as you were the person I got as my Kris Kringle. I do hope you like it.’
Sugarplum smiled.
‘What are you thinking?’ asked Tony.
‘I think we are standing under the mistletoe’
