Post subject:  For King and Country - COMPLETED AT LAST 26/04

This is my first drabble and first ever attempt at writing Chalet School since I was about 9 and I'm a little nervous about posting it here. Feedback is greatly appreciated. It's silly and it's short (one or two more parts) but I hope you like it ~Emma

Josephine M. Bettany (or to use her married name which she was more commonly known by, Jo Maynard) was far from her home in the small village of Howells in Armishire. She would never have admitted to it but she was rather nervous at being in such a big city. Still, she told herself, you have to do what you have to do and she did have to do this.

Joey was dressed in her smartest clothes and for once separated from her many children and squads of other relatives and hangers-on she felt like she didn’t know who she was. She did have one relative with her – her brother in law Sir James Russell – but he wasn’t who she wanted there. For one thing, he didn’t understand her worries about leaving her precious triplets. He kept telling her that Madge and Robin were both perfectly capable of taking as good care of them as she did but just didn’t realise that it wasn’t the same as having your mother there. She should know – she had never had her own mother there and that was why she was so determined that her children would grow up needing her and knowing her. Madge had done her very best (as had Dick) and Joey had always felt secure and loved but there had been times when Madge hadn’t been enough and she had pined for the mother she had never known.

Turning slightly away from Jem she saw that they were fast approaching their destination and her nerves came back slightly more than they had been before. Still there was a war on and everyone had to do their duty. As much as she hated it, this was her turn to do her bit for King and Country.

Most definitely intriguing. And so sad the way Jo pined for the mother she couldn't remember.

Thanks Emma; I'm looking forward to more. :D

Sorry for the delay, things kept cropping up that weren't supposed to. Hopefully this should be finished tomorrow. Thank you for the feedback

It had always been her dream since she was 12 to be an authoress and she had longed to do things like she was about to do. But the reality was different to the fantasy she had imagined and now the opportunity was here she wished it wasn’t. Truthfully she couldn’t think of anything you wanted to do less – even a trip to the dreaded dentist would be better than this. Of course, she could never tell Jem that – he was a dear chap but it was another of those things he would never understand.

Her dear Jack, now he was a true lump of comfort and he would understand. However he was off serving in the navy as a medical officer and doing his duty for King and Country. Madge and Jem had tried to convince him not to go, tried to tell him that they could get an exemption for him but he had argued that he had to do this and Joey had backed him up 100%. Not to say that it wasn’t horrible being separated from him and she didn’t wish at times that he was there with her because she did. But she was proud that her husband was standing up for his principles and doing what he believed was right rather than what was easy.

A slight touch on her elbow from Jem bought Joey out of her thoughts once more and she realised they had reached their destination. Pulling away from him slightly, she took a deep breath and straightened her shoulders. With fear in her heart but a smile on her face Joey pushed open the door of the shop and walked inside.

I'm glad Joey backed Jack up when he joined the forces. If she hadn't have given her blessing I feel he may have chosen the easier option.

Sorry for the long delay, things haven't been fabulous and have just taken a turn for the downright nasty. But this is finally completed!

“Mrs Maynard, how lovely to see you again.” simpered the small rat like man who she recognised as one of her publishers. Slowly walking up to him she smiled tightly and he took her hand in a weak grip. For a moment she had been concerned he meant to kiss it but thankfully she was wrong and he simply shook it.

He wasn’t the sort of man who people easily gave their trust to so how he managed to become a publisher of children’s books she wasn’t sure. But she supposed that he must be a man of fine character because after all – he was the one who had selected her books for publication. If he could recognise true talent then it was obvious that he wasn’t as bad as his appearance and even his manners would at first seem to suggest.

“If you’ll just come this way we have a table set up for you over here – and there’s quite a crowd gathering already.”

Joey’s heart sank even further at that news – that meant an even longer ordeal than she had anticipated and she did want to get back to her girls. Knowing however that she had to do this she forced her smile a little brighter and nodded her agreement. It was her duty and as a proud Mamma she must set a good example. So she put her mind to it and went over to the table and the dreaded book signing.

 Typical Joey! Mind you, looking after her own children and doing house work wold have put her in an early grave, so I'm not surprised she counted book signings as 'war work'.

Thanks Emma.
