Kathie Ferrars stormed into the staffroom where her particular cronies were lounging with their feet up on the sofas, slowly inhaling the fine tobacco that they overindulged in during the holidays and draining the last dregs from their tumblers of gin.

'Shit! Shit! Shit!'

'What's gone wrong now?' lazily enquired Sharlie Andrews, who was feeling positively mellow.

'It's those bloody Maynards again!' came the stormy reply.

'We might have known. it's always them.' uttered Nancy, the third of their triumvirate. 'What do they want NOW?'

'Well, you know it's our turn on escort duty from Paris?'

'Yes, thank God.' drawled Nancy Wilmot. 'I'm on escort duty with a rich Arab the evening before. You know how well they pay. I'll have enough for that nice Georgian cottage I've had my eye on. And for furniture.'

Here she smirked knowingly at her companions.

They smiled back, they knew all about the 'Cottage' that Nancy had set her heart on. And the 'Escort Service' she was going to run from it.

'Well, you can forget about it this time!' came the reply. 'We've been lumbered with those bloody Maynard boys for our overnight stay in Paris. Just the very night that I was going to do my final performance at the Folies Bergere. My Benefit performance!'

A stunned silence was the only reaction.



Apart from the sound of wheels whirring in the heads of all three.

I just thought that Nell had realised that unpacking test tubes, then washing them and putting them away was not the most fun activity offered around here. She must be making some of that new drug, what do they call it, crystal meth, that's it.'

Kathie burst in, 'So that's why Hilda never said a word when Jo 'asked' me if we'd mind doing the job.'

'Probably accounts for the kids' snotty noses,' Sharlie interrupted. 'too much coke. The poor little devils won't have any noses left before long.'

'Well, if you ask me, Jack and Jo have cut themselves into the deal, probably looking to buy a big house somewhere with the proceeds.' sid Nancy slowly. 'But this doesn't help us.

'Tuesday evening is the big evening for Mamselle Rosetta La Nouche, and by golly, I'm not being done out of my new business by the Maynards.'

'Me neither,' said Kathie. 'Why, Miss Fifi le Fan's Benefit Finale has been advertised everywhere. It's not just the fee, you know that very well. It's all the high denomination notes that they tuck into my suspender belt and stocking tops. I don't have to pay tax on that money. I was counting on it.'

Sharlie was looking more peeved by the minute.

'You two know perfectly well that that was supposed to be the night I topped the bill at the Crazy Horse Saloon. All those stripteases at New Jimmy's were just an apprenticeship. Well, I for one am damned if I'm going to be done out of my big night. Besides, Henri is going to buy me a very nice apartment in the Third Arrondissement. You know his wife never leaves their country estate. Well, why should I be done out of a comfortable future so the Maynards can lord it over everyone in Wales?'

'What we really need,' replied Nancy slowly. 'is a plan.'

'What we really need to do is write everything down as a schedule,' said Nancy thoughtfully. 'then we can start thinking about how to solve each problem as it happens. I wonder if there's any chance that we can shove the boys off onto Simone for the night, but pretend that we've all made hotel bookings, which we have, and have also made arrangements to see friends and relatives who just happen to be in Paris at that time.'

The other two looked a little perkier at that. It might work.

'We'll have to start dropping hints now.' replied Sharlie thoughtfully. 'Hilda already knows that my sister is working in Paris, so that ought not to be a problem.'

'As long as they think that one of us is going to be there, it might not be as much trouble as it seems.' said Kathie in a pensive tone. 'I've got an idea.'

'In the meantime, I'll be letting Hilda know that we want some compensation for the extra work. Even one percent of their profits ought to give us a tidy little sum each.'

'Agreed' said Kathie. 'I'm looking to retire from teaching very soon. My Benefit night ought to bring in enough for that flat I've got my eye on. And anything extra would be good, I've got the furniture to think of as well.'

'I'll get on the phone this afternoon to a few contacts in Paris.' offered Sharlie. 'I know Hilda will be out having tea, so Rosalie will be taking the opportunity to have a nap, she had a heavy night last night down at the casino.'

Then she grinned wickedly. 'I'm also going to tell her, or at least make it plain that I think that she and Jack ought to be doing this job themselves.'

'No, No!' Nancy positively howled. 'If they go to Paris, they'll expect us to spend the evening with them, and I'm not wasting a single moment listening to Jo maundering on about the old days in Tyrol!'

Slowly the plan began to come together. Jo and Jack had been made to understand that other people had their futures to consider, and that their plans to buy the estate next to Madame's might have to be modified a little.

And Hilda and Nell had been given to understand that distribution of the latest consignment might be interrupted if the three women who were to spend the night in Paris were not allowed to spend the time with their own 'friends'.

Jo, of course, had been inclined to try to put a spanner in the works, but her objections had been firmly overruled by Jack, who had fond memories of the time when he had been a distinguished guest at a 'medical conference' in Paris.

Above all else, word had come from Winnie Embury that the women were in the right. They were entitled to a night off, especially in the French capital, and jack and Jo had better put a sock in it, or the new distribution network that She has spent so much time putting into place would not be made available to the entrepreneurs of the Gornetz Platz.
