Not sure if this is the right place for this. Feel free to move it if you think it necessary.

This is my first attempt at a drabble and so please be gentle with me. I apologise if it duplicates anything on the Board but, even though I want to, I can't read everything.

Dear Miss Liss,

I must firstly introduce myself. My name is Josephine Mary Maynard and, many years ago, I attended a school called the Chalet School. My great-grandson, Matthew Maynard, introduced me to the internet when he visited recently and suggested that I “google” myself. Whilst the majority of the websites that mentioned my name discussed my published works I did also find your website, the Chaletian.

As a schoolgirl my every move was chronicled, twisted and published. A Miss Elinor M Brent-Dyer, who today would write for a tabloid newspaper, said that she intended to study the day-to-day running of the school and publish her findings. Interest would be intense as the school was in Austria which, in the 1930s, was as remote as the moon to the majority of people living in England. I myself was never allowed to, and then never wanted to, read her books as she sensationalised our school activities and marketed her books as novels. Had my sister been aware of her intentions she would never have allowed her such access to our lives. Once she started however it was impossible to stop her as she threatened to expose the secrets of the school to the nazis. Once we returned to England her threats changed and she claimed that she would tell the English authorities of our “closeness” to the nazis if we did not continue to allow her access to our lives.

The attention that arose was such that, after the war, my sister was forced to move the school to Switzerland and my family and I were obliged to follow in our efforts to escape. Unfortunately she obviously had some contacts within the school as her novels continued.

In recent years the books have been published less and less and I have been able to live a quite life. However, on discovering your website I was disgusted to read your scurrilous lies and atrocities about the lives of my family and friends. I therefore write to you with the intention of putting the record straight.

Firstly - my family

I have heard from many that according to Miss Brent-Dyer I was the proud mother of 11 and that I had many adopted wards. This was not true. From friends, and your website, I gather that I was “mama” to: triplets, four singletons and two sets of twins in addition to Adrienne, Erica, Marie-Clare, Roger, Ruey and Roddy. I don’t think that I have missed any out.

I did indeed have children but was definitely not “mama” to any, "mummy" was good enough for me. My first born was a little girl. In common with many of my continental friends I gave my child a host of names. Mary Helena Constance Margaret was born when I was nearly 21. She was a lovely baby and I happily looked after her while my husband Jack, truthfully portrayed as a doctor, was working. Following on from little Mary we had three other children (Stephen Michael and my twins Felicity and Felix). In common with most children they had friends who visited during school holidays. It appears that each set of visitors was deemed to be “adopted” by me and if there was nothing else to write about I was deemed to have had another child.

In fact it was Simone who had a large family but Miss Brent-Dyer disliked the French and upon every conceivable occasion dismissed her as “sentimental” and, at times, vaguely stalker-ish. When Simone’s hair was bobbed I believe a tale was told that she had run away and cut it herself as I would not be as friendly with her as she wished. If only Simone had deigned to notice me. Simone was clever and French. How exciting that seemed to a girl who had failed to get into high school and who had never left England until her sister got a job teaching in an Austrian school!!!!

Jack wasn't a clever man and was not a great part of the children's lives. Indeed, his treatment of his patients and his willingness to drug anyone and everyone saw him struck off and imprisoned. Miss Brent-Dyer did not include this in her books as she believed that doctors were Gods and could do no wrong.

This was further illustrated when I was a child. I was having skating lessons with several other pupils and a man (Jem Russell) lost control of his skates and knocked me over. I fractured a wrist broke a couple of ribs. Miss Brent-Dyer portrayed this as me having run away from school to attend an Ice Carnival and being so inexperienced that I fell in front of Doctor Jem.

As an aside, Jem may have called himself "Doctor" but he had no qualifications and "Quack and charletan" would have been a better description.

Post subject:

I have decided just to ignore the fact that Joey has an encyclopedic knowledge of what happened in the books (as much as I can remember from the paperbacks anyway) and let her just rant away.

Secondly - the early years

I must apologise for my disjointed letter, I have had little opportunity for correspondence of late and find that my mind wanders,

I wish to address some of the more sensational stories of my youth:

Flight from Austria
We went by bus! Jack and I had married and decided to take our honeymoon in Switzerland (partly to get out of Austria, due to the political situation). Travel was still possible and so we packed our bags and passports and caught a train to Vienna followed by a bus into Switzerland. Robin came with us and, as it was the end of term, we escorted some of the school’s pupils to their parents.

There was some truth to Miss Brent-Dyer’s story (please excuse my referring to her as EBD from now on) as it was very foggy.

Rescuing Veta
Elisaveta really was the daughter of the Crown Prince of Belsornia, although with four brothers there was never really any question of her becoming Queen. Cosimo was the Crown Prince’s cousin and acted as his Aide. Veta was to go home during a half-term holiday to attend the wedding of her eldest brother and, naturally, Cosimo came to collect her. They began the journey back to Belsornia but had not travelled far when they had a puncture. They were walking to the nearest village for help (all of half a mile) when our form, out for a ramble, met them. Veta returned to the school with us while Cosimo and a local man mended the tyre. At no time did Cosimo seek to harm Veta and he most certainly did not fall down a crevice and break his neck (he did sprain an ankle when he tripped over a rock though).

Biddy
Bridget O’Ryan was on holiday in the Austrian Alps with her parents when she decided to sneak into the school boat-shed and borrow a boat. Unfortunately, the boat-shed door was caught by a gust of wind and she was locked in. she was found a couple of hours later by the school Guides. They took her to the school and, whilst waiting for her parents to collect her, she borrowed some clean clothes from them (hers were absolutely disgusting by this point) and had Kaffee und Kuchen.

Upon joining the school herself she helped the Guides care for the kittens that they had adopted.

Rescuing Rufus
Not much to say about this. Madge bought him for me as a birthday present.

Next - the San

Finally, a little bit more.

The San was indeed set up by my brother-in-law Jem Russell and did employ my husband. However, it never treated TB and would never have taken poor patients in a “free-ward”. The San’s initial purpose was to provide a home for the daughters of wealthy families who had “got themselves into trouble. They spent a few months being “busy” in Austria before returning home to their families, generally claiming to have been away at finishing school.

Sometimes Madge raised the children herself if no other home could be found. Despite EBD’s stories it would just not have been possible for Madge to have so many children without anyone realising that she was pregnant!!!

When the school moved to the UK Jem found work at a hospital in Wales treating wounded soldiers. Doctors were thin on the ground and even his little knowledge was useful. Jack was forced to join up as he had, by this time, been de-barred by the medical council for doping friends and family (and most of the school). Jack never rose above the rank of “private” throughout the war. Incidentally, when he was “lost feared drowned” he had fallen asleep on a pile of cloth in the bows of the ship.

After the war we moved to Switzerland as a friend of Jack’s offered him work in his cosmetic surgery clinic (apparently some of this work required little in the way of professional qualifications). This was a good move for us as it enabled us to get away from EBD and her lies and it enabled me to continue with my career as a romantic novelist (pen name Barbara Cartland).

Apologies for this taking so long. Unfortunately I fell down the stairs (it was just a stupid accident and I hadn’t been drinking) – luckily nothing was broken but my arm (and bottom) were sadly bruised. It’s only now that I can really type again. Having Matey, and even Jack’s little doses, would have been useful.

Mary-Lou

The first thing that you should be aware of is that Doris Carey (previously Doris Trelawney) did not exist. Mary-Lou’s real name (poor child) was Mary-Lou Brent-Dyer (please forgive me for referring to her as M-L B-D from now on). She was the secret love child of EBD and Sir James Russell. In order to avoid detection EBD gave M-L B-D the name Trelawney.

M-L B-D was a plain child who joined the school at the same time as Verity-Anne and Clem Barras. Both of these children soon outstripped M-L B-D in every conceivable way: they were more attractive, had more character and were much cleverer. In one of the earlier books in which she appears M-L B-D is described as having a “moon-face.” This was one of the only accurate descriptions of her. She had long mousy brown hair that was tied back in a messy plait and a colourless face. She was quiet and retiring but EBD’s daughter could not be portrayed in such a light and so the exaggerations and untruths began.

M-L B-D was never a “butter-in.” Indeed if you have read Miss Blyton’s excellent Malory Towers novels the character of Mary-Lou in those books was much closer to the description of M-L B-D.* M-L B-D was never head-girl, indeed despite remaining at the school until well past her 18th birthday she did not reach form Upper VIA. Verity-Anne was head-girl during those years.

On the occasion that M-L B-D was said to have been involved in a near fatal accident when the school was skiing and tobogganing, nothing could be further from the truth. I accept that EBD was shocked to find that her daughter had broken her finger when she caught it in her toboggan but to describe her as “still, grey and to all appearances dead” was very wrong.

In a similarly fictitious story M-L B-D was with Miss Ferrars when they went for a walk to a glacier but she did not rescue Miss Ferrars from certain death. Miss Ferrars had a terrible habit of kicking stones out of her path (if I may advise my dear Miss Liss, please do not do this as it is dreadful for your shoes) and merely kicked a stone a little vigorously. It bounced from the path onto the glacier nearby. I am aware that this is not an exciting story and would not have included it in one of my own excellent novels.

I also find it necessary to correct those who refer to M-L B-D as OOAO. On no occasion would M-L B-D have been described as such. She was so colourless that I would have been surprised had anyone actually noticed her.

Some of the other untruths relating to M-L B-D should also be corrected:

Ted Grantly and my beloved Mary Helena Constance Margaret were friends from the time that they were little girls, her mother was one of my closet friends. For the record, Ted had an exemplary school record and was never expelled.

M-L B-D did make Verity-Anne’s bed almost every day that they were at the school. This was a cause of great embarrassment to poor Verity who just wanted M-L B-D to leave her alone rather than constantly doing “little things” for her in an attempt to be friends.

In the early years M-L B-D was said to have made herself ill through over-work. Nonsense! Over-eating was the cause of her tummy-ache when she ate half a pound of chocolate in bed one night.

Jessica Wayne and Naomi Elton were never difficult pupils. They were, like the majority of Chalet School girls, normal and well adjusted. I did not know them well for although we lived near the school (not next door as the San and my house were about 10 miles away on a different mountain shelf) I seldom met those girls that weren’t close friends of my daughters.

Miss Liss, I apologise for having written such a comprehensive letter but felt that the record should be set straight. I have nearly finished my account…

*** Apologies if this should be St Clares rather than Malory Towers but it is years since I read them.
