“I disapprove of him going into such an insecure profession. I shall jolly soon put a stop to those ridiculous ideas of his!”

Thus Jack Maynard, Lord and Master of Freudesheim and the Gornetz Platz Sanatorium.

Joey could see her son Felix enjoyed acting, but he had to obey! “I quite agree my love, pass Papa’s cup Phil.”

Little Philippa Maynard did as she was bid, earning a kindly smile from her Papa.

As Philippa was dismissed to brush her teeth, Jack turned to his wife. “Such good little girls! Why is it always the boys who are trouble?”

Here Joey was not content to be submissive. “Jack! Have you forgotten the trouble we had with Margot? And don’t forget young Cecily has already been sailing close to the wind with her fine tantrums at school! And what about how good Steve and Chas have been over the years!”

Jack realised he was in the wrong and did not like it.

“Point taken” he growled. “I just don’t want Felix’s eyes dazzled by the promise of fame and fortune in the acting profession! He will be in for a very rude shock if he thinks he can make it!”

With that, Jack stormed off to work, where he forgot all about his family and where he could be worshipped by adoring staff and adoring patients and their relatives.

Back at Freuedesheim, the telephone rang. It was Miss Ferrars. Joey rolled her eyes as she heard how Cecily had just tipped a jar of yellow paint over her cousin Daphne Bettany. She was at present in the custody of Matey awaiting judgement. As she left Freuedesheim, Joey glanced at the portraits Peter Young, Gillian Linton’s husband, had painted of her children. She came to the one of Felix and Felicity and smiled.

“Don’t worry my little man. We’ll work something out!”

Joey blew the portraits a kiss and set off to deal with her truculent daughter.

Back at school, Felix was glowing with pride. He had been chosen to be the lead villain in “The Murder of Maria Marten”, the school production that year. His English teacher Mr Fenwick was directing and the Director of Music Mr Grove was composing a special score! Even the perpetually miserable Mr Walker, the art master was happy to make the set! Felix looked at the cast list. He was going to have a ball! He then looked at the list of stage management team and to his shock and horror saw that the stage manager and properties master, was his big brother Mike!

If there was a god of practical jokes, it was Mike Maynard. He could work brilliantly when he chose with only the slightest of effort. He was an all rounder in subjects, sports and extra curricular activities, but what had made his teachers tear their hair out from day one was his capacity for pranks!

Thrashing him did no good. Reprimands from home would do the trick, but they only lasted a week or a fortnight, depending on how scathing Jack’s angry letters to his son had been. Finally, the staff took a gamble and gave him some responsibility. Mike had tried protesting, he had tried pleading, he had even had a fit of pique, but much to his teachers’ laughter, he was stuck with the post of sub prefect!

He had decided to tackle the job head on and put himself down for everything; even the school play. He was just as horrified as Felix to find he was Stage Manager! How could he honestly be expected to have a laugh now? Where would the stink bombs go? What about the apple pie beds or stag beetles he was breeding in the Head’s toolshed?

Mike saw his brother looking in horror at the cast list.

“I’m not exactly pleased about this myself Felix!” he growled.

“But you’ll mess everything up! Everything you touch falls apart! Here’s a chance for me to do well, and you will mess it up!” Felix said anxiously.

Mike was offended.

“Have some faith in me!” he snapped, raising his voice. “Anyway, Ma and Pa will be coming to see this. They will be bringing Len, Con and Steve! So I daren’t mess it up even if I wanted to!”

Mike stormed off. He knew who would have the stag beetles in his bed tonight now!

Felix sulked. He had upset Mike, who would certainly retaliate. Now he knew Mama and Papa were coming! He was pleased about Mama coming, but he was not so sure about Papa. During the summer holidays, He had been over effusive with his love of the theatre. A friend had taken him to a theatre workshop for children, he had excelled in his English reports, a school visit to tour the local theatre and a visit to one of the big London ones had pulled on his heart strings! He had been to more theatre workshops with his friend and loved them! He had announced his attention to go into the acting profession! Papa had looked at him in shock, then the diatribe had begun!

An insecure income, travelling out of a suitcase, no guarantee of success, immoral people, cut throat competition, waste of money going to drama school and he should concentrate more on maths, maths and maths as his maths and science reports were appalling! He had a ready made profession waiting for him: medicine. All he had to do was obey his father. It was for his own good!

There had been tears and not even Felix’s twin, Felicity could console him. Indeed she made matters worse by reiterating the line of total obedience. The fact was, Felix had no aptitude for science, but Jack was too angry to see that, even though Mr Parr the Head of Science wrote a complimentary report saying,

“Felix does not have a real aptitude for the sciences, but his effort is the most commendable in class.”

Mike was just relieved the row wasn’t directed at him!

Felix wondered how Papa would react to the show.

Joey returned to Freuedesheim having reduced her daughter to tears and made her apologise to Daphne Bettany. Cecil then had to face the humiliation of cleaning Daphne’s dress and speaking to Uncle Dick and Auntie Mollie on Mama’s telephone to apologise for her behaviour. This was made worse by the disapproving presence of Auntie Madge who was there for a “flying visit”.

Joey read through Felix’s letter again. She could tell her son was delighted at being cast in the lead role, but reading between the lines as she could, she knew how nervous the boy was at the reception he would receive from his father.

She offered a little prayer of support for her son.

“Michael Maynard! Try and pay attention to the script! We are doing the forest scene where the three gypsies see the barn burning!”

“Sorry sir!”

Rehearsals were exasperating. Mike was trying his best, but he would get the wrong cue or put the wrong flats up for wrong scenes. He gave the murder weapon to the victim as a prop and then realised he was on the wrong side of the set and leapt to the other side in full view of the cast!

“Oh Mike, use your brain!” screamed Felix.

Mike scowled. He stomped backstage to look for the gun Felix used as his prop to go back to the school safe, but he could not find it!

It was only the school starting pistol, but it looked like a real weapon. A horrible thought occurred to Mike. Not Felix surely?

Felix came off stage to an agitated Mike.

"Felix, where in the name of thunder is that gun? You know you are supposed to give it to me as soon as you finish your scene!"

"The gun?" Felix was staring blankly at Mike. Then an unpleasant realisation crept upon his face.

"Oh no! They couldn't have! Of all the stupid numbskulls!"

"Explain! Who's got it? Felix this is deadly serious!"

"Well, it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't have messed up that scene change earlier! Instead I gave the gun to..."

"STAND AND DELIVER" a voice boomed from the quad, followed by maniacal laughter.

The laughter turned into gasps of horror from the two third form boys Felix had foolishly entrusted the gun to, with strict instructions to give it to Mike. The third form boys, Kent and Marwick had intended to scare the life out of Gray, one of the "wets". Unfortunately, Kent and Marwick had jumped upon the bad tempered Mr Holland!

Two yelps of pain were heard and two protesting boys were dragged into Mr Fenwick's rehearsal by the ears. Mr Fenwick was annoyed at the dramatic entrance of Mr Holland. "Fenny" and "Holly" were old enemies.

"MR FENWICK! MR FENWICK, SIR! I WISH TO COMPLAIN IN THE SEVEREST POSSIBLE MANNER!"

Mr Fenwick was diplomatic, but severe. Kent and Marwick were sent to the Head for "six" each, under the smug eye of Mr Holland. Then Mr Fenwick turned upon his unlucky cast.

"Which unspeakably foolish boy entrusted the school starting pistol to those two morons?"

Fenwick's voice had a cold, scolding whisper like quality. Terrified, Felix raised his hand.

"You?!" Mr Fenwick could not believe his ears.

"Maynard?"

Mike stepped forward.

"Sir, Felix meant to hand it to me as he was supposed to, but I was doing that scene change, please sir, it's my fault!"

Mr Fenwick silenced Michael with such a glare.

"He should have waited until you had finished that scene change then!"

There was a nasty pause. Mike eyed his little brother. The Maynard family were never very demonstrative or emotional. Mike and Margot were indeed the least emotional of the eleven, but Felix seemed to have all the sensitivity and emotional anxiety of his brothers and sisters combined. Mike had tried to step in and protect Felix. Oh what would happen to the poor boy now? Mr Fenwick, who was not in the best of moods thanks to Mr Holland, spoke more in anger, but his next words broke Felix's heart!

"Do you want think you should be in this play at all if I clearly can't trust you with such a dangerous prop?"

Felix nearly fainted. This was too much for Mike, who took an assertive step forwards. Fortunately Mr Fenwick's anger abated. He would never give in to being an unjust pompous old goat like Mr Holland!

"I think it would be a good idea if you went straight to bed young man. Just don't do that again!"

"Yes sir, I'm sorry sir!" Felix allowed his older brother to practically drag him to his dormitory.

Felix was off lessons for the next two days he was so exhausted.

Mike took the opportunity to perfect his stage management skills and he was starting to look forward to the school play himself. He had never tried drama before and it would be a feather in his cap to do something different. He did not plan on emulating his mother by throwing hammers at science teachers and then jumping on them from ladders! Nor did he plan to emulate his sisters' excitements by setting the stage and scenery on fire (although they weren't to blame for that incident!)

Felix returned to school a happier young man. He had just raided the tuck boxes he and Mike shared. A beautiful cake of a delightful Tyrolean recipe had arrived all the way from Switzerland! Mike found Felix in the common room, stuffing his face.

"Ah, glad to see you're better F! I thought I might have to eat all that cake by myself! You know what Dad says about wasting food!!"

Felix grinned.

"I saved the soft part for you!" he spoke with a cheeky smile.

Mike gave a mock "offended" look which did not fool his brother in the slightest.

"Ready to murder Maria Marten?"

Felix nodded. he stood up with a flourish and broke into one of the play's songs,

"I am the villain as soon you will see,
No maiden is safe within miles of me,
For I simply revel in salacity,
A double dyed villain that's me!
All together now with me,
Three hisses for villainy!"

Mike smiled. "Who's strangling the cat?" he muttered under his breath as a joke.

The first night. Felix was under a mountain of foundation, black hair dye and false beard and moustache. Mike ahd offered to pull the moustache off at the end of the show, whereupon Felix informed him that if he did, he stuff the moustache somewhere painful on Mike.

"We need a pantomime version of Macbeth next year, with those three gypsies!"

"Did you see Felix Maynard? He got all those lines word perfect!"

Were just some of the comments at the end of the show.

Mike couldn't help noticing a hunched figure in the audience, in raincoat, aht and scarf. The man was there every night and always disappeared into a taxi at the end of the show, as if he didn't want to be seen! There was something familiar about him. Something Mike couldn't quite name.

The production runs had gone perfectly from Monday to Friday. It was the last night on Saturday and Mama and Papa were coming. Len, Con and Steve would be attending too!

As a result, Felix was a bundle of nerves. He knew Papa's views on the theatre!

"What if Dad says something really bad Mike? I know he will! He'll say I shouldn't be wasting my time on silly play acting and I should be doing extra maths!"

"Don't think about it F! Just don't! This is your night, Dad won't begrudge you that! Anyway Mama can talk him round! Honest! Just go out there and act!"

Felix prepared himself, but came running back to Mioke as the audience were let in.

"Where are they Mike?"

"Sitting in the front row! Now Felix, concentrate on your acting! Never mind Dad! Unless you want your understudy to do your part! Shall I call Mr Fenwick?"

Mike's brusque words made Felix pull himself together. The curtain went up and the greatest farce of a school play in the school's history was produced that night!

Directors of school and amateur plays have said since time immemorial that the last night of the play should not be "hammed up".

It was highly unfortunate that the boy who was helping Mike with the scene changes was sick and a substitute had to be hurriedly arranged. The substitute was somewhat in awe of Mike and easily panicked by Mike's brusque talk. So a small pantomime emerged. Mike brought the stage right "forest scene" flat on as was required, but the stage left flat brought on was of the inside of a cottage!

The audience were treated to Mike jumping up and down in rage and ordering his terrified deputy to get the right "flat" for the scene. Once the error was corrected, Mike grabbed the unfortunate boy and made him take a bow to raucous laughter from the audience.

As Felix was singing a rendition of "Curse the girl!", he was meant to fire his gun into the air, unfortunately he saw his father, made eye contact with him and it looked like he was shooting his own father! Fearful of a thrashing, Felix finished his song and legged it off stage as fast as he could! Mike was nearly wetting himself with laughter!

The wrong music cue had been given for "I am the villain as soon you wil see", so in true panto style and completely in character, Felix had bellowed at the music box. "No idiots! My song! Play it again!" By this stage there was not a dry eye in the house!

To crown it all, some silly boy had acquired some left over wine from the interval. Some of the cast members had indulged, particularly the boy playing Old Mr Marten, father of the murdered Maria. In the scene where old Mr Marten finds his daughter's body, he gave sucha melodramatic performance, he fell off stage! he scrambled back on saying to the audience, "There be big holes in this barn!"

In the murder scene itself, Felix's gun failed to fire, so he pretended to strangle the unfortunate maiden. He then went offstage, came back on and shot the body, saying, "Oh that's how it works!"

The applause at the end was deafening and a chant of "Felix! Felix!" was heard and Felix came on for extra curtain calls.

"Well done son!" was Mike's comment to his brother.

"You weren't too bad yourself!" was Felix's reply.

The crew stayed to disassemble the set, whilst Felix and the cast spent ages scrubbing their faces of thick make up and peeling off their sweaty costumes. As each member of the cast emerged, they were greeted to wild applause from the sudience. Relatives and friends swamped their "little stars" then Felix emerged.

Everyone wanted a piece of him. He was kissed by girls from age seven to seventy, he shook hands with countless men, one of whom was a boxer and had a grip like a vice as Felix later said. Hundreds of little boys wanted his autograph, then he saw a familiar face.

"Steve!" He shouted with joy.

"F! Get over here now!" he shouted.

Stephen Maynard had to extricate his little brother from the tentacles of the crowd. He himself was grabbed by an ex biology teacher, Miss Lucas who was very interested in what Steve was up to these days!

Shrieks of joy were uttered from Len and Con! Finally there was Mama who enveloped her son in a welcoming cuddle.

"Darling I'm so proud of you!" she whispered.

Felix held onto his mother. Then he had a sudden thought.

"Papa?"

"He's behind you dear!" was his mother's reply.

Felix turned round to see his father making his way towards him.

Felix trembled. What would Papa say?

Jack's expression was forbidding. Felix felt the life drain out of him. He knew his father's opinion on the theatre!

A nightmare vision appeared before Felix! He could see endless corridors of hospital beds! The sanitised stench of bleach and disinfectant and the smell of antiseptic! Crisp white starched uniformed nurses demanding his attention, Patients crying out "Dr Maynard, help me! Your father would help me! We need more Dr Maynards!"

Felix stumbled and collapsed into the arms of his mother.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

He woke up in the sick bay. His mother anxiously watching him.

"Dad wants me to be a doctor Mamma! I don't want to be a doctor, I just don't have the skill! Please Mamma, please tell him! He won't listen to me! Papa doesn't listen to us! Please make him understand Mamma! You understand! You really do!"

Joey bit her lip. She knew Jack loved his children, but he had come across as a martinet to Felix. It was difficult for Felix going to school abroad. The boy needed to talk more with his father. She kissed her son as he sank into the arms of Morpheus (fell asleep to dream).

"How is he Joey?" Jack's face was anxious. It was beginning to dawn on him that he had not handl;ed his son's situation very well.

With a tear in one of her eyes, Joey turned to her husband.

"Jack, your son is frightened of you!"

Jack was horrified. "I don't believe it!" he said weakly.

"Why are his letters home so short, why do you persist in bullying him into medicine when you know his does not have the aptitude for it?"

"I just want what's best for him!"

"Maybe Jack we should run the risk of letting him go into the theatre! He may not make it, but let's do a deal! He gets his A Levels and O Levels and then he goes to drama school! Accommodation costs shouldn't matter, the family have propoerty in London, the only thing to pay would be course fees! It's the same as a university course! Jack, you saw the play! Some things did go wrong on the last night, but you can't fault his acting! Please Jack!"

Jack Maynard was silent.

"I watched him on the other nights too. He was brilliant. I crept into school to see him perform every night. He was superb."

"So that's where you went every night this week!"

Jack nodded.

"Mike nearly recognised me one night, I had to hurry away. I had even spoken with Felix's teachers, they agree he tries hard, but is no scientist. I so want a son to go into medicine."

"But Jack, Margot is a doctor!"

"But we never see her anymore! I so wanted a son to go into medicine too!"

"There's still Geoff!"

"But in the theatre, there is so much cut throat competition!"

"Please Jack let him try!"

"When Felix wakes, I shall let him know. You're right, I must talk to him some more."

Felix woke up again. The play had taken a lot out of him, but it was worth it! What he was really frightened of was the reaction of his Papa, who loomed in the boy's mind as a terrifying judge, jury and executioner. From his earliest days he could remember Margot and Mike expecially always being in floods of tears after a run in with Papa.

Jack Maynard was just beginning to realise what a terrifying figure he was in his son's eyes. He had been uncompromising in discipline and his will was as hard as granite. He was never wrong and he knew what was best for his wife and children! He had seen the look of despair as Felix saw him during the play and the boy had simply collapsed after the show, partially from exhaustion, partially from something else. Fear of his father.

Jack had spoken with the boys teachers who insisted Felix would never make it in medicine or dentistry for that matter. He simply did not have any talent in that area. One of the younger science teachers became quite defensive and asked the great Dr Maynard, "If you doubt my word as a qualified teacher, how would you like me to come to your hospital and doubt every clinical decision you make?" Dr Maynard too the young teacher's point, although the head of science made his younger colleague apologise for rudeness.

So Jack was sitting beside Felix's bed and gazed upon his fourth son as he stirred from his slumber.

"Felix."

"Dad?"

"Felix wake up and look at me." Jack said firmly but gently.

It was not easy for Jack to break from the tradition of boys blindly following their father's footsteps in absolutely everything. For one moment Jack felt like begging with his son to take up medicine, but this would be foolish.

Felix looked at his father cautiously. It looked like a good sign, Dad was not wielding a slipper or belt, nor was he about to explode. And the gallows was nowhere in sight. Always a good sign.

"I've made a decision Felix. I've spoken to your science teachers, I've spoken with Mamma and I've watched you every night of the show and I'm so proud. You can go to drama school my boy. You needn't go into medicine. Papa still loves you. I'm sorry I was so hard on you."

Felix just held onto his father weeping tears of relief.

"You'll work hard at your A-Levels won't you? Get some good qualifications to back you up! Do that for me?"

Felix nodded.

"I was so afraid of you going into the theatre. There's so much that could go wrong! It's very cut throat, it's a case of 'who you know' not what you know. There's people who just take an instant dislike to you and talk behind your back! Friends can turn to enemies! I'm so afraid for you! It seems like the worst thing to go into!"

"But Dad, I have to make my own way in life and my own decisions. That's what Mama, Auntie Madge, the trips and even Uncle Jem says!"

"Yes I know. I've become too possessive of my younger ones in my old age."

"Dad?"

"Yes?"

"Whatever mistakes you think you've made, you are and always will be the best Dad in the world. I'll always love my Dad, because I can come to him and talk when things are tough!"

Father and son were reconciled to each other's careers now.
