Sian, the last two years have been extremely hard for you, I know, so I thought a special Christmas story just might help re-dress the balance a little. Enjoy! :D

NB I did start posting this in St Therese but apparently, if a drabble has a CBBer in, it has to be in St Clare. Please don't expect zany humour or anything  as it isn't that sort of drabble at all.

A Christmas Wish Come True

Mary drove through the imposing gates, dawdled along the narrow road through the park so she and Sian could enjoy the sun shining aslant through the trees, and finally came to rest in the great house’s car park. She looked around in some surprise.

“Hmm! Very quiet for such a lovely summer’s day. Where is everybody?”

“Left it all for the ducks and us to enjoy in peace,” remarked Sian with a chuckle, indicating the small lake that lay between them and the National Trust house they had come to visit.

Mary slung her bag over her shoulder and locked the car doors. “So let’s make the most of the peace while we have it. The place looks so empty we can imagine we’re the long-dead owners and disport ourselves accordingly.”

“Dressed in lace and stays, no doubt,” giggled Sian. “No thanks! I prefer my modern fol-de-rols – much more comfortable and far easier to keep clean!”

Mary tucked her arm through her friend’s. “You’re impossible! Come on!”

They meandered along the track past the lake and watched the ducks hurtle over with loud quacks in the hope of some crumbs. Shrugging their shoulders and shouting “Sorry!” the two women continued on their way, leaving the ducks swimming round in angry circles and squawking indignantly after them.

Reaching the large front entrance, they found the door closed and no ticket office available. Strange! They pushed the stout, wooden door but it didn’t move. Sian searched the door for some sign of a bell and noticed a curious brass knocker set into the dark wood.

“A fir tree! With a star on top! Weird!” she muttered.

Mary shrugged. “Never mind – let’s give it a whirl!”

Sian cautiously lifted the brass tree, let it fall and was astonished at the loud boom which seemed to reverberate through the air. Nothing happened, however, and she had lifted her hand to do it again when the door opened with an abruptness that nearly toppled her over the threshold.

Steadying herself, she peered inside, but could see nothing, at first, against the brightness of the sun. Putting her hand up to shade her eyes, she saw two tall women slowly take shape in the dimness of the interior. They were both smartly dressed, although their clothes seemed somewhat out of date, if far more elegant, than her own light summer skirt and blouse. But why were they dressed for winter, when it was hot as could be outside?

“I’m so sorry for keeping you standing there,” said a most beautiful, mellow voice. “Do come in out of the cold!”

Cold? Startled out of her skin, and feeling strangely nervous, Sian looked round for Mary, but she was nowhere to be seen. Sian’s eyes searched everywhere frantically. Where had Mary gone? She turned back to the two women and licked her lips in sudden fright.

“I…I… seem to have lost my friend,” she stuttered “Maybe I should….”

The sturdier of the two women took matters into her own hands. She stepped forward and hauled the unwilling Sian over the threshold, while the other woman closed the door, shutting out the bright sunshine. Sian shivered uneasily. What on earth should she do?

“Please don’t be scared,” said the woman who had drawn her inside. “Mary brought you here as a surprise. She knows how fond of us you are and she thought you might enjoy a visit. Regard it as a sort of Christmas present from her.”

Sian gasped. “But it’s not Christmas! It’s the middle of summer out there…..”

Her voice trailed away. She was becoming more accustomed to the dim light now and she stared in utter disbelief. She knew these two women! Or at least something about the sturdier woman seemed familiar, though she was sure they had never met before.....

Mary, some of my drabbles have CBBers in them and I've never been asked to move them to St Clares - is this a new ruling? In any case wouldn't St Scholastika (sp?) be more suitable?

I moved this thread as we thought Sian going to the Chalet School wouldn't really fit in well in Ste Therese. Sorry! Lesley - IIRC your CBB characters were minor ones.

Thank you Mia - though considering one of the CBB characters was me I'd hardly consider them minor  However it would seem that that this does not really fit St Clare's - more St Scholastika's if it has to be moved - that's the one that's for 'Crossovers, slightly random stories, stories that are neither fish nor fowl nor good red herring.'

I appreciate St Clare's states it's for CBBers but it's used as a comedy forum.

Very good point, abbeybufo! I think it's shaping up to be a cracker (pun entiirely intentional). People who enjoy Mary's drabbles will find it in New Posts and it might pick up some St Clarites who haven't had the pleasure of reading Mary's drabbles heretofore.

Anyway I'm off to bed! I spent last evening at the Scottish Trad Music Awards in Perth , concert finished after midnight, spent an hour or so kissing the winners, chatting to friends, enjoying the music, then found the car park was locked, and had to summon a taxi from Dundee to get us home.......rolled in round 3am much to the amusement of SLOC!

There's an option to 'View new posts' at the right-hand end of the light grey bar under the darker one that says 'Board Index' [or wherever you are at the time]. On my screen, when you are at the Index, it's the middle of 3 choices on the lower of 2 lines.

Will be looking forwards to more as and when you are ready Mary. I have so many questions which need answered... Is my guess as to the identity of the two ladies correct? What are they going to say to Sian? Where are they going to take her - given I doubt they're likely to hang round in the hall all day!?! How come it's Christmas when it was Summer just a few minutes ago... What else have you got planned to follow on this peaceful, yet thought-stirring post?

Hmmm - did I review before now? *shrugs* Guess I forgot to say a few things!

Since you put it so politely, shesings. :D

The part-sentence in italics in the description of the entrance hall is taken from The CS Goes to It.

Sian gasped. “But it’s not Christmas! It’s the middle of summer out there…..”

Her voice trailed away. She was becoming more accustomed to the dim light now and she stared in utter disbelief. She knew these two women! Or at least something about the sturdier woman seemed familiar, though she was sure they had never met before. That white hair, those dark eyebrows and mischievous, clear grey eyes, the exceedingly determined chin, that no-nonsense voice….

“Nell Wilson,” she whispered in shock, her eyes round as glass marbles. “How… where….?”

The grey eyes laughed at her, and then swung round to her silent companion. Sian’s eyes followed, knowing already what she would see. She took in the keen, watchful blue-grey eyes, the clear-cut features and sensitive lips, the firm dimpled chin. She recalled the musical voice she had heard at the doorway…

“Miss Annersley!” she gasped, and then clutched her head. What was happening?

“Hey, what’s with the nonchalant ‘Nell Wilson’ and then the respectful ‘Miss Annersley’?” queried a brusque voice. “We’re all equals here, you know.”

Mellow laughter rippled round the hall. “Behave, Nell. You mustn’t scarify people, not when they’ve just been dragged roughshod over our threshold and are totally flummoxed and all at sea.”

“Harumph,” complained Nell. “That austere composure of yours gives you an unfair advantage, Hilda Annersley. No one would ever dare be familiar with you without permission.”

Sian giggled but Hilda merely replied, in the blandest of tones, “Oh, there’ve been one or two – and there’s a person not a million miles from here who takes unfair advantage all the time and gets far too familiar, just when I’m at my most serious and trying to impress people!”

Nell smirked, but before she could make reply Hilda turned to Sian. “Yes, I’m Miss Annersley, but my friends call me Hilda, so please….”

They shook hands. “I’m not really your friend, though, am I? I do appreciate the kindness,” Sian said, and then turned to Nell. “I apologise for my rudeness, Miss Wilson.” Nell smiled and waved her hand to indicate all was well. “But I still don’t really understand. What am I doing here with you?”

“What did Nell just tell you? Mary arranged it all with us. You are to spend the day with us, meet whoever you like, see the concert…..”

“It’s just not possible. You’re….. characters in a book… you’re not real…. the school’s not real…. so how can I be here?”

“Well, I like that!” muttered Nell. “We are real, young lady - so real to our readers that we’re as real as you. Feel my flesh. Pinch it, if you like.”

She held out her arm and Sian grasped her hand as though it were a lifeline. “But – how did I get here?”

“Let’s just say it’s a spot of Christmas magic and leave it at that,” remarked Hilda gently, and nodded towards the door Sian had just been pulld through so unceremoniously.

Sian had been concentrating on the two Headmistresses to the exclusion of all else, but now she looked round – and then looked around again. The whole thing truly was impossible! She must be having a particularly vivid dream. Here in the hall she could see artificial light, a roaring fire in the great fireplace, dark panelled wood and an enormous, decorated Christmas tree. Back outside there – bright sunshine and trees in full leaf. High summer!

She gave it up as being beyond her understanding and gazed round the hall once more, instead. A strip of rich green matting with gold border ran from the front door to the double doors at the other end of the hall. These doors were underneath the great gallery which led from the noble staircase and ran round three sides of the hall. The staircase banister was wreathed in greenery and red velvet ribbon to match the beautiful tree standing near the front door. It was a most welcoming entrance, the fire and lights adding lustre to the polished wood of floor and walls, and sparkling off the glass-fronted cabinets dotted here and there, some containing books, others gleaming trophies and cups.

Sian stared and stared until she could contain herself no more. She heaved a huge sigh of mingled rapture and bewilderment. She’d always wanted to be part of the stories – now she was! She had passed through time and space to get here, simply by walking through a door. But how?

She sought Hilda Annersley’s kindly eye. “I recognise this place. I’ve read its description so often. This is Plas Howell, isn’t it? Has the war finished?” Hilda nodded. “What time of day is it?”

“Nearly break time,” answered Nell. “And the snow’s started, so the girls will be wild with excitement.”

“Snowing? It’s hot as burnt toast out there,” stammered Sian, pointing to the door. “That’s why I’m wearing these clothes.”

Hilda’s eyes sparkled. “What clothes?” she teased. Sian glanced down at herself, and then clutched Hilda’s arm in shock. She was wearing a black skirt and a thick red sweater! She gaped up at the Headmistress.

“Come on into the library,” Hilda said gently and led the way through one of the doors. Sian followed after and then stopped short and gasped out loud. She could see snow dancing and swirling madly through the tall windows. Yet when she walked up to the school, the sun had been shining down from a clear blue sky! Shock upon shock seemed to be piling in on her.

“Please explain,” she whimpered. “Christmas magic isn’t strong enough for this.”

Hilda took her by the arm and settled her on the sofa. “I can’t explain it, really, any more than you can. You’ll just have to suspend your disbelief for the day, my dear. Don’t ask how it happened. Just accept that it has, that you are living your dream – and enjoy it.”

Sian gazed into the beautiful eyes and relaxed. She drew in a deep breath to steady herself. Nell smiled to herself. Hilda had done it again. Sian’s eyes roamed round the library-cum-study. She had read about it in the books but it was somehow grander and yet far more welcoming than she had ever imagined.

Another lovely Christmas tree graced the wood-panelled corner between the huge fireplace and the tall window; an enormous log burned merrily in the hearth and be-ribboned garlands decorated the mantelpiece. The faded Chinese carpet with its gloriously muted colours, the bulging bookshelves climbing to the ceiling, the tall windows on three sides and the shabby, comfortable seating each added their widow’s mite to the gracious charm of the room. Hard to believe Hilda or Nell could ever dispense justice in a room that lifted one’s sprits so!

“Oh, we manage,” murmured Hilda, reading her mind. “Like you, we feel the loveliness of it, so I do hope you will remember its charm when you have left us – and imagine us trying to be severe in such surroundings. Think you’re relaxed enough now to enjoy it for the rest of the day?” she teased.

“Oh yes!” Sian sighed with ecstasy.

“Hmm, you might be changing your mind by the end of the day,” put in Nell caustically, “after a hefty dose of girls and mistresses – and Headmistresses.”

She winked, but Sian was having none of that. “Oh, no, I shall want to stay forever. How could I not? You two are my heroes.”

“Oops!” chuckled Nell. “Maybe we should kick her out now, Hilda, before we fall off our pedestals and spoil it for her.”

Hilda gazed at her for a long moment, before adding softly, “Not at all - you’ll just have to behave for once in your life, Nell, dear. How I’ve longed to see this day.”

“Me behave? How about you, you unmitigated wretch?” cried Nell, and threw a cushion at her friend, nearly upending several coffee cups in the process.

Hilda tossed the cushion in her hands, and grinned impishly at Nell. “You’ve just rather proved my point, I fear. Childishness doesn’t begin to cover it.”

Fortunately, at that moment the bell rang for the end of break. Nell shot out of her chair and dived for her books on the other side of the room. A word from Hilda, however, pulled her up short.

“I don’t have a lesson just now, Nell, so I might take Sian round and show her off. Shall we pay you a visit? Keen to display your fancy footwork in the lab?”

Nell grimaced like a gargoyle. “I’ll give you fancy footwork, my girl. I’m careful and sober in the lab, I’ll have you know.

“Well, it’s the only place you are!” murmured Hilda.

“As I was about to say, before I was so rudely interrupted, the girls will be high as the proverbial kites today so I was going to keep it simple and do some notes and some clearing up – but I could get them to do some experiments, I suppose, in honour of the royal presences.”

Hilda wasn’t quite sure she liked the wickedness lurking deep in the grey eyes but there wasn’t a lot she could do in front of a visitor. She smiled over at Sian, her eyes twinkling. “Is there anyone or anything in particular you’d particularly like to see – or will all of it do?”

“Oh, all of it, of course,” Sian exclaimed, clasping her hands together in joyful anticipation. “I don’t suppose there’s any chance I could hop across and visit Joey, as well – or Lady Russell?”

Hilda shook her head. “Impossible, I’m afraid. One step outside the door and the magic ends, immediately.”

“Bit like Cinderella and her coach, you mean. I’ll turn into a pumpkin?”

“I’m afraid so! Just don’t leave behind any glass slippers.” Hilda smiled then rose to her feet. “We’re procrastinating, and you haven’t got all the time in the world, so let’s make a start with Rosalie.”

When being introduced to Rosalie Dene, Sian was surprised at the secretary’s youth. She seemed like a schoolgirl herself. Of course – it was still some years until the end of the series. Hilda eyed Sian speculatively as they left the office.

“Er, you’ve obviously read all the books, since you seemed surprised by Rosalie’s youth. Any chance you could enlighten us as to our future?”

Sian considered the problem for a moment or two while following Hilda through a door in the wood panelling, then asked somewhat tentatively, “Would you have wanted to know in advance about your accident?”

Hilda shuddered. “Hardly – although I suppose I could have tried to avoid it if I had known. I take your point, though. It’s wiser not to know. Forgive me. I shouldn’t have put you on the spot like that.”

Sian suddenly stopped in the middle of the corridor and closed her eyes. When she opened them again Hilda saw she was frowning. “D’you know, Hilda, I couldn’t tell you even if I wanted to,” she murmured. “It’s gone, like a door has slammed shut in my mind. It’s as though I haven’t read anything beyond this point. I’m sorry….”

“Don’t be! You’re right. Knowing in advance is a dreadful idea. Anyway, we all know that when our creator dies, or stops writing, then we will die with her.”

Sian seized Hilda’s arm. “But that’s just not true. She did die, years and years ago, but you’re still alive even now to thousands of readers. Not just children but adults, as well. While you have even one reader who cares about you all, Hilda, you can’t die – you might never grow any older, but you’ll go on and on.”

“Hmmm!” mused Hilda, as she ushered Sian through a door. “Reminds me of an insect caught in amber.”

Another update! How wonderful.

How lucky Sian is to be able to have this time with Hilda and Nell... And how lifelike they are too! :D I love the way the pair of them tease each other. And Sian's answer regarding telling them the future.

So... She can't go see Madge and Joey, but I wonder if Mary and the others can arrange for a visit from them? Or is this just going to be a time spent with the school and those of them there?

Thank you Mary - for an update which raises almost as many questions as it answers! :D

That was lovely - like Lesley, I was in the room with Sian throughout that scene.

Among so many other touches, I loved the way Sian's 'memory' of the Chalet School future was suddenly wiped from her mind, as if it had never been there.

And it may be 40+ years (1969) since EBD died, but it's certainly true that there are still many of us who care about her, her books and her characters and will continue to do so.

Thank you, Mary - I think we are all enjoying reading about Sian's experiences just as much as she is, and just as much as you are clearly enjoying writing it. :D I will be looking forward eagerly to the next instalment. :) :)

Please can I meet Jesanne Gellibrand ?

Your magical word picture brought to life the lovely library-cum-study at Plas Howell. I'm very jealous of Sian being in that room with both Hilda and Nell and as for all those books, that is definitely a book lovers paradise. I wonder who Sian will be introduced to next, Matey perhaps

I don't know whether I'd be swooning with rapture or terror at being in such an intimate situation with Hilda and Nell, but this is a terrific story, Mary. I, too, liked the way Sian's knowledge of the future was wiped out (clever) and the way she was able to assure Hilda that they were still very much alive. And yes, we all know they're real :D .
I deeply mistrust that glint in Nell's eye, though, I wonder what she's got up her sleeve - but what utter joy to be at one of her lessons, whatever happens.

Sian, I'm sorry to keep you waiting but RL has been extra-busy of late. This piece is a hasty additon to what was already there, so hope it does its job and realises your Christmas wish... :D

....."While you have even one reader who cares about you all, Hilda, you can’t die – you might never grow any older, but you’ll go on and on.”

“Hmmm!” mused Hilda, as she ushered Sian through a door. “Reminds me of an insect caught in amber.”

Sian caught a glimpse of sadness in the fine eyes, but then saw what was going on in the form room she had entered and forgot all about it. Bespectacled Miss Burnett was conducting a lesson on the history behind some of the Christmas customs, to judge by the pictures on the board. After being introduced and realising the girls in the form were Juniors, Sian rapidly scanned the girls’ faces. Almost immediately she spied a face she recognised from the author’s descriptions – a fresh-faced, pigtailed Mary-Lou Trelawney, looking her usual perky self. With mounting excitement, Sian then spotted pretty Vi Lucy and tiny, fairy-like Verity-Anne Carey. Oh, wow! She hugged herself in sheer delight and saw Hilda nod at her in complete understanding.

For the next hour or so Sian felt as though she was living a dream, a particularly vivid and exciting dream. She peeped into another Junior form and saw lovely, dark-haired Gillian Linton reading a story; she shook hands with Jeanne de Lachennais whom they met in a corridor; she watched Pam Slater conduct a riotous Maths competition with Lower Fourth; they peeped in on Jacynth Hardy having a cello lesson, and heard singing emanating from the Hall.

She was only allowed to have a peek in at the door, as some of the girls were having a last quick rehearsal for the concert that afternoon. What a thrill it was to see tall, spare Plato in his quixotic finery, and Grizel Cochrane playing the piano for him. How pretty she was!

She hugged herself time and again, so ecstatic with delight was she at seeing so many of her beloved characters coming to life before her very eyes. All it needed to complete the day was for Jesanne Gellibrand to appear. One of Sian’s favourite tales was the mystery of Dragon House, but she knew she had been beamed into the wrong year. Jesanne would be well above school age by now. She had probably finished her years at college with her friend Lois and was back at home in Dragon House, which belonged solely to her. For some reason, the whole tale had always thrilled Sian and she had wanted to know the rest of Jesanne’s story – but that would never happen, alas.

They left the Hall and walked down a long corridor with doors on both sides. Sian turned to Hilda to ask her a question but, as she did so, she caught a flash of movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head quickly, but there was nothing and no one ahead or behind them. And yet she could have sworn…

With a shrug, she turned back to Hilda but had barely opened her lips when she caught that flash again. She whipped round to look behind her – and gaped.

“Sian?” Hilda spoke anxiously. “Are you alright? Sian, speak to me. You’ve gone quite pale.”

Sian clutched Hilda’s hand. “C…c…can’t you see her?” she gasped, eyes still staring towards the end of the corridor.

“See whom?”

"Jesanne!” Sian whispered. “She… she’s standing against the wall where the corridor turns….and she’s smiling at me! Oh, oh, did I conjure her up just by thinking of her? Are you sure you can’t see her?”

Hilda held the cold hand firmly between her warm ones and shook her head. “I can’t see anything out of the ordinary, dear. But that doesn’t mean I doubt you. How do you know it’s Jesanne?”

“Oh, I’d know her anywhere. She’s so small and yet so regal, and has such dark, dark hair and dark eyes, huge eyes. She’s not pretty, though, she’s more…. interesting-looking. Though that jaw speaks volumes for her determination. Reminds me of Miss Wilson’s.”

She heard Hilda chuckle dryly beside her. “Ah! Yes, I’ll give you the jaw – in fact, I’ll give you the lot. She’s exactly as you describe her, a most unusual and very determined young lady, with great responsibilty resting on her young shoulders, but she is more than equal to the task.”

Sian freed her hand and held it out invitingly but the small figure just smiled and shook its head. It wasn’t quite substantial enough to be real but it – Jesanne! – was there, welcoming her to the Chalet School. For a moment or two longer, the vision was there, and then – it wasn’t!

But on the wall, before which where Jesanne had been standing, there appeared, as though on a cinema screen, a house…. a large, grey stone house, with wings which stretched out back and front, so the shape was that of a wide capital H. On the tops of the pillars that marked the boundary walls at intervals were carved great Welsh dragons….

Even as Sian absorbed the wonder of the house and dragons, the vision slowly faded and the wall was once more blank. Sian let out such a sigh as she turned to Hilda that the latter held up her hands with a disconcerted laugh.

“Careful, or you’ll blow me away. Has she gone?” Sian nodded, unable to speak. “I can see absolute delight in your eyes so I take it you really did see her. Strange – we don’t usually have such eerie goings-on…”

Sian simply beamed at her, still half-dazzled by what she had seen. Hilda caught her visitor’s hand to steady her. “I think, my dear Sian, that there’s more Christmas magic around than I had realised. Did you just see Jesanne – or was there more?”

“I can’t believe it…. Jesanne Gellibrand…. just standing there, smiling at me,” breathed Sian in wonder. “And she showed me the house, Dragon House…. It was… Oh, wow, it was just out of this world.”

“I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there,” Hilda said wryly. She put an arm round Sian and guided her gently on down the corridor, though Sian kept turning her head round to make sure the vision hadn’t re-appeared. “Jesanne always was a very sensitive and generous person. Maybe her spirit answered some deep and secret call from yours. I don’t think I’ll mention when I next write to her, though. There have been enough mysteries in her short life.”

They walked on silently and Hilda was pleased to see Sian’s face recover some colour. “Feeling more yourself now?” Sian nodded, still smiling blissfully, and Hilda laughed, as though in sympathetic understanding. “Come on, then. Miss Wilson is next on our list and she’ll soon knock any mystery on its head. I’ll guarantee that.”

Lovely for Sian to be given that taste of Jesanne and Dragon House - it's clearly the best sort of magic.

That was really, really lovely - I'm another who has always had a very soft spot for Jesanne, and for Sian to have had that glimpse not only of her herself, but also of the Dragon House, must have felt really special. No wonder Miss Annersley is momentarily bewildered, but I'm glad she doesn't simply dismiss what Sian sees as a figment of imagination. I have no doubt that Nell will provide the leavening agent needed here!!!

Thank you, Mary - I was there, along with Sian. I am having great difficulty in banishing the picture of that special Christmas episode which is part of the Dragon House tradition from my mind.

Mary... As many other commenters have said, that was a beautiful bit of writing. How lovely for Sian to be granted a peep in at the various happenings at the school, and to know instinctively exactly who she is seeing - from ML and her friends to Jacynth at her lesson. And then, to crown it all, a sighting of her favourite character, showing her the glory of a house she cannot visit. I would imagine that this is beyond what Sian herself could hope for - maybe a visit from Jessane, which in itself would have been lovely - but to be granted a heavenly perspective on the house and be welcomed in as she was... just out of this world!

And how matter-of-factly Hilda takes it... though as she points out herself, given how extraordinary this particular occasion is, disbelieving in this isn't exactly an option!

I'm looking forward to hearing what Nell has to say now.

Thank you Mary. :D

I always like to pretend she wrote it just for me, as it is dedicated to Mary and was published in the year of my birth 1946. Ah well, one can dream. *sighs*

....They walked on silently and Hilda was pleased to see Sian’s face recover some colour. “Feeling more yourself now?” Sian nodded, still smiling blissfully, and Hilda laughed, as though in sympathetic understanding. “Come on. Miss Wilson is next on our list and she’ll soon knock any mystery on its head. I’ll guarantee that.”

A few moments later, they fetched up at the laboratory. At their entry, a quick word from Nell Wilson had the girls scurrying to remove their books from the science benches and place them near the door. Hilda’s eyebrows climbed into her hair, though she said not a word, while Sian was too absorbed trying to recognise the girls to take note of the gleeful glint in the grey eyes.

Nell waved her arm at Hilda and spoke airily. “Miss Annersley, of course, you all know and admire, girls. But Mrs Lewis* is a visitor to the school, so I thought we might entertain her by conducting one or two experiments.”

She reached behind her, placed an empty tin on the workbench and removed the lid, which she held up. “As you can see, I’ve punched a hole in the lid of this treacle tin, which I purloined earlier from the kitchen.” Her eyes twinkled at Hilda when the girls laughed at her sally. “Now, Mrs Lewis, I wonder would you like to hold the tin for me? Got a steady hand, I hope.”

With a lop-sided grin, which Hilda distrusted intensely, Nell handed over the tin to Sian and turned to the girls. “If you’d be so good as to turn on the Bunsen burner, Tom, our visitor will hold the tin upside down over it for a few seconds. Perhaps you’d better use these gloves, Mrs Lewis.”

Hilda was watching every move intently, ready for anything. Mischief was rife in the air. Sian upturned the tin over the Bunsen burner, taking in short-haired, long-limbed Tom Gay the while. Another of her heroines!

“Know what you’re filling it with, do you?” asked Nell, in some curiosity.

“Um, gas? Isn’t that what comes out of Bunsen burners?” asked Sian.

Nell nodded. “Right, let me just light this spill, and then off with the gas and on with the lid, please, Bride.” Quickly, this was effected, and Nell held the lighted spill. “Who can now tell me what will happen if I hold this flame over the hole?”

“The gas trapped in the tin is escaping through the hole,” replied a girl who Sian thought might be Julie Lucy. “The flame will ignite it.”

“Correct, Julie. And then?” No one filled the silence. With a shame-faced glance at Hilda, Nell gave an urgent command. “Everyone over by the walls, please – now!”

The girls and Hilda and Sian scattered to the four walls. They watched Nell hold the lighted taper to the hole. Another flame immediately sprang into life as the gas ignited, just as Julia had predicted. Quickly, Nell blew out her own flame and withdrew to a wall opposite Hilda – and breaths were held all round. Hilda’s quick eyes searched for the fire extinguisher.

With a loud and heart-stopping suddenness, the lid parted company with the tin and flew up to the ceiling as though intent on boring through the roof. Several startled shrieks were heard and most people instinctively ducked, then straightened with rather red faces as the lid hit the ceiling and fell back to earth with a clatter. Breaths were exhaled, girls grinned at each other – and Hilda glared at Nell so hard that the latter feared for her friend’s eyes. Why didn’t they fall out?

“Don’t touch it!” Nell exclaimed sharply as one hardy soul reached out to the lid. “It will still be scalding hot, girl!”

She gathered them all back round the table and glanced at Sian. “Any idea what happened, Mrs Lewis?”

“Apart from getting the fright of my life, you mean? No idea, I’m afraid!”

The answer came from a surprising source - surprising to Nell, that is. “As the gas burned off inside the tin, the space filled with air and mingled with the heated gas to cause an explosive mixture.”

“Thought you didn’t know any science, Miss Annersley?” Nell’s voice would have curdled cream.

“I do believe you once agreed with Charles Lamb, Miss Wilson, that in everything that relates to science I am a whole encyclopaedia behind the rest of the world,” Hilda replied, her face impassive.

Someone snorted, at which point giggles overtook the girls. Hilda’s gaze swept the room and then returned to Nell. “So perhaps I picked it up by osmosis – and I’ll leave you to explain that to the girls.” Her eyes dared Nell to argue as she added blandly, “Fancy footwork indeed, Miss Wilson. Whatever happened to falling off pedestals?”

Nell’s eyes twinkled. “Ah! I knew we should have sent our visitor home!”

“Well, I’ll take her away before you give her a heart attack, shall I?” asked Hilda sweetly. “Good morning, girls. Please keep an eye on Miss Wilson for me. I would like a school to return to next term.”

The girls chuckled as she swept out with Sian, and then they clustered eagerly round Nell requesting another experiment.

Walking down the corridor, Sian examined Hilda’s face. “You weren’t really angry, were you?”

“Sian, that piece of theatre was put on expressly for your and my benefit, in the hopes of seeing us run for cover,” laughed Hilda, her face relaxing. “No, Nell Wilson knows exactly what she’s doing in her lab and wouldn’t put a hair of anyone’s head in danger – except, maybe, mine,” she added thoughtfully. “Come on. A small sherry before lunch will do us no harm at all. Just keep it away from the fire!”

*Sian is travelling under a pseudonym here - and I suspect I may have belittled her knowledge of Science. Sorry, Sian.

Whatever Nell's intent was, I'm still giggling, and this is already the 3rd time I've read this episode!!!! The vision of all the girls, Sian, Hilda and even Nell herself 'running for cover' was just great - I could see it all!!! And Sian's enjoyment of it all comes through loud and clear - I love the way she is playing 'spot the CS individuals' as she encounters them.

Thank you, Mary for allowing us to experience it all along with Sian.

Oh! Why didn't I see this last night!!! That was wonderful! But how... cheeky of Nell to do such a thing! Poor Sian - and Hilda! And what an amusing classroom scene! Flammable material, fire, and enclosed space really do not mix together well... As for that image of Hilda glaring so hard Nell wonders why her eyes don't fall out... She's certainly got a fertile imagination, scientist or not!

Of course Nell knows exactly what she's doing - and how she is enjoying the sensation she's created. I'm not surprised that Hilda is less than ignorant, either, I can't somehow imagine her being content with not understanding.

Little did I suspect when I said “as we know her lessons at times, go with a bang!!!!!” after your previous post, that that was exactly what Nell had in store for both Hilda and Sian. In fact I’ve been giggling at intervals ever since I first read it, Mary.

Nell is just a naughty schoolgirl at heart herself and I loved the way Hilda knew that something was up and how she checked for the fire extinguisher. Nell is lucky that Hilda did not turn the contents of said fire extinguisher over her!! If I were in Sian’s shoes I think I’d be in need of more than one sherry after that little episode. I’d also be wondering what will happen when Nell and Hilda see each other next. Mind, Hilda might be more in need of it, what with former pupils turning up in ghostly form, to say nothing of Nell’s spectacular experiment.

Thank you Mary, I’m looking forward to seeing who Sian will get to meet over lunch.

Hmmm, wonder no more, Menna....

Nell eyed Hilda from under lowered lashes as the Head said the short Latin Grace a little later in the dining-room.

“Sorry, Hilda, my sense of humour got the better of me! Give you a shock?”

“Let’s just say I knew you well enough that I was searching for the fire extinguisher even as she blew!”

Nell laughed out loud. “Can’t ever get one past you, can I?” she moaned. “You’re a dark horse, though. Where on earth did that gem come from?”

“What gem? You mean the quotation?”

“No, villain that you are - the answer to what happened back there…..”

Hilda shrugged. “Even I have a modicum of intelligence, my dear, and I’ve worked with you long enough to know certain things by heart.”

“And I thought you never listened!” moaned Nell.

Sian began to giggle. “Oh, it’s grand to hear you joshing each other. I love it in the books when you get going. I remember when the stove exploded in Lavender…..”

Hilda gazed at her with some hauteur. “What makes you think I was joking at that point in time, Sian? Nell here might have thought the resulting mess was amusing….”

“I do believe I called you a tragedy queen,” interrupted Nell dreamily, and suddenly Hilda nodded and chuckled into her soup.

Waiting for her main course, Sian kept an ear open for the two women’s joking conversation while her eager eyes roved around the tables, searching for faces she might recognise. Fortunately, she could see most of the room from where she was sitting. It had been a real thrill to be in a lesson with Tom Gay, Bride Bettany and their associates. Who else was here? As she gazed, she encountered grave, dark eyes looking back at her.

“There’s Jacynth Hardy again.”

Nell nodded. “And over there are her other selves, Gill Culver, our Head Girl, and Gay Lambert.”

Sian crowed with delight at seeing Gay’s yellow curls. “She’s the one who imported German measles into the school.”

“Please don’t remind me.” Nell shuddered. “Hilda was taking it easy elsewhere at that time and missed all the fun,” she added, although her clear grey eyes were dark with remembered pain.

“Don’t, Nell,” Hilda murmured. She turned to Sian. “Recognise any others?”

“Well, I’ve already seen Mary-Lou and Verity-Anne. But isn’t that Clem over there?” and she indicated a girl with the long red-brown plaits and eyes almost the same colour as the hair. Hilda nodded. “And that girl with the red hair must be Sybil. She’s just so pretty.”

“The girl beside Mary-Lou is Josette, Sybil’s sister,” Hilda pointed out.

“Mary-Lou and her classmates are somehow going to be very important to the school as they grow older – but don’t ask me how,” remarked Sian.

“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” laughed Hilda, her eyes thoughtful as they rested on the Juniors’ table. “They’re a lovely bunch of girls, even if they are up to every mischief in the book.”

“Plus some that aren’t in the book, or not any book I’ve ever seen,” Nell added dryly.

After lunch there was coffee with the staff. Sian simply sat and stared as these people she had only read about came to life before her very eyes. She enjoyed every mouthful of Jeanne de Lachennais’ famous and delicious coffee while listening in on the many conversations going on around her. Just wait till she got back home and told Mary! Maybe they could write a new fill-in about it.

There were lots of nervous comments and complaints about the play to come, but Hilda and Nell seemed to calm and re-vitalise the atmosphere, one with her soothing remarks and the other with her comic capers. Nell’s rendering of the explosive treacle tin caused much merriment.

“Saving it for a special occasion, were you, then, Nell?” giggled Mary Burnett.

“But of course! Have to keep my co-Head on her toes!”

“Oh, your co-Head was on her toes long before you lit that fuse, my dear,” smiled Hilda peaceably. “I could smell the mischief in the air.”

Nell grimaced at her and then replaced her cup on the tray. “Have we time to show Sian the rest of the place, Hilda?”

Hilda looked at her watch and round at the mistresses. “The girls will have had their rest by now, so I think we could start moving them across to the church and be getting them ready. I’ll take charge of that while you finish the tour, Nell.”

So while quiet hustle and bustle went on downstairs, Nell conducted Sian round the dormitories upstairs, where the visitor sighed over what could never be; round the bathrooms and one or two of the mistresses’ rooms, including Nell’s own; then over to the san, where they found Matron Lloyd scanning her linen cupboards. Her spare countenance relaxed into a smile of warm kindliness when she saw Sian.

“Come up to your expectations, have we?”

“Oh, you’ve all well and truly exceeded them, Matron,” Sian beamed. “How can reading about you all compare with actually being here? But, tell me, where are your tart tones, your withering glare? I expected to be on the carpet within two seconds of meeting you. I’m a very untidy person.”

Nell giggled reprehensively. “There, Gwynneth – your reputation goes before you. Even I and my sarcasm weren’t greeted like that.”

“But, Nell, you were true to form as soon as we met,” Sian retorted, “lobbing cushions at Hilda, calling her names – and nearly killing her with exploding tin lids.”

“So – whose reputation was it you were poking fun at, Nell Wilson?” Matey asked, in tones tart enough to delight even Sian’s heart.

Nell looked very pointedly down at her watch. “I think it’s time we made a move before we feel the rough edge of Hilda’s withering tongue.”

Thank you for another highly satisfying meal for the imagination! Those conversations!!! I was there, watching it all take place again. It wouldn't have surprised me if one of them had suddenly turned round and addressed a comment to me!

The section where they were discussing the girls that Sian was recognising was brilliant - I particularly liked the comments as to how important Mary Lou and the rest would be to the rest of the series - and the kind of trouble makers they were. It was also good seeing a little more of Jacnyth and co! Oh! And Clem! :)

Another lovely piece - I am enjoying taking part in Sian's encounter with the school *so* much!! I love to see her recognising the various girls and staff members, and her obvious enjoyment of the exchanges between Hilda and Nell over lunch. Also enjoyed the second part of her 'guided tour', this time with Nell as her guide, while that exchange with Gwynneth had me giggling madly again, as did Nell's last, barbed comment about 'Hilda's withering tongue'!!

Sian was not the only one giggling at the joshing between Nell and Hilda. I rather suspect that Nell though, had been wondering what exactly Hilda would have to say about the incident. I’m surprised though that Sian managed to eat anything during that lunch, what with listening to the comic duo next to her and people watching, at least she did manage a cup of coffee.

Like Elder, I too enjoyed the second half of the guided tour, as for Matey, how typical of her, as I’ve said before in New Dreams, a Welsh dragon with a heart of gold :D She probably recognised Sian as a fellow Celt

Post subject:  Re: A Christmas Drabble for Identity Hunt. p5 Fri 17/12/10

Sian, I'm so sorry to keep you waiting but this is the first time I've had chance to open my laptop since Friday.

They found Hilda waiting for them at the foot of the grand staircase, wearing her coat and tapping her foot. “There you are! Only we four left now, so I thought we would be lazy and take my car.”

Sian suddenly stumbled as she reached the door and looked at Hilda with a tragic face. “How can I go with you? I’ll turn into a pumpkin if I step outside that door.”

“I’ve thought of a way round that,” Hilda held out what was folded over her arm. It was her black MA gown. She wrapped it round Sian and settled the red silk hood over her hair. “I’m a little taller than you, so it practically reaches the floor and covers you from top to toe when the hood’s up. To make sure the magic still works, keep it wrapped tight around you and let nothing show. You’ll be warmer as well.”

Sian huddled inside it and stroked the material happily. To be wearing something of Hilda’s, especially her very own university gown….. what joy! Maybe something of Hilda’s gentle spirit would pass through to her from its warm folds.

Hilda patted her on the shoulder as though she understood. “No sneaking off with it when you leave, my dear,” she muttered with a laugh. “It’s the only one I have and I need it.”

Sian spluttered. “As if I would, much as I might like to! But I wouldn’t mind a photo of myself in it,” and she held out the camera which she had been using almost non-stop since she arrived.

The photo having duly been taken, Hilda hustled them out of the building and into the car. Sian stared out at the snowy mantle transforming houses and fields into a magic wonderland. She didn’t want this ever to end. Lighted windows spread their golden glow onto the snow like festive table-cloths and up above the stars were beginning to twinkle and shine.

However, all journeys have to end some time and Sian looked around with intense eagerness when they walked into the church. People were slowly filling the rows of seats and she guessed they were a mixture of parents and villagers. She wondered if some of the doctors and nurses from the great San were there. She soon forgot all these musings, though, because they were accosted by a tall, dark lady with a most delightful smile and a chubby baby asleep in her arms.

“Joey, why on earth didn’t you leave Michael at home with Anna?” Nell cried, hauling the baby out of Joey Maynard’s arms and giving him a loving cuddle.

“Anna wanted to see the concert, too,” Joey pointed out. “Don’t you dare wake up that child, Nell Wilson, or you’ll be the one holding him during the concert. He’s fed and changed and should sleep all the way through, but I’ll sit here at the back just in case. Here, hand him over.

“Joey, I’d like you to meet a friend of ours before you take him back,” said Hilda. “Sian, this is Joey Maynard, of whom I know you’ve heard a very great deal. Joey, this is Sian Lewis, who’s visiting us for the day.” They shook hands, Joey bestowing a friendly smile on the ecstatic Sian. “We’ll leave you for now, though, as I suspect they’re about to start. Sure you won’t sit with us?

Joey claimed her son and sat down at the end of the back row. “No, I’d rather not have to disturb everyone, if I do have to take him out. Enjoy yourselves, and be sure that either Madge or I will be writing a proper play again next year for you.”

The four ladies moved to the front row and took their places, Sian seated between Nell and Hilda, with Matey to the right of Nell. Almost at once, Grizel Cochrane took her place at the organ and the audience rose to sing God Save our King, not with a rousing patriotism but in a mood of prayerful gentleness. The memories of war were too near, and the many revelations of brutality too horrifying for there to be any triumph in their voices or hearts. All they could do was thank God for the peace that was now theirs, and ask Him to help re-build shattered lives and ravaged countries.

The music died away. In the silence, Hilda left her seat and mounted the steps before the altar as people settled back in their seats. Her mellow voice cast its beauty to the furthest corners of the church, while her quiet smile lit up her fine face.

“Ladies, gentlemen and children, welcome to our annual Christmas performance. We don’t have a play for you this year, but a joyful festival of carols and readings which we hope will convey the very essence of that first Christmas night. So, please, do enjoy it and, at the end, take the spirit of the season with you, not just into your homes but out into a world that still has much need of the love and peace that the infant Christ came to bring us all.”

Sian absorbed Hilda’s gentle wisdom, her rich and velvety voice, her unself-conscious dignity and grace – and was moved to tears. What an example she was to the girls! How could one help loving her?

“She always gets it just right,” murmured Nell, and Sian could only nod in agreement. Hilda returned to her seat, the curtains swung back and the music began.

How wonderful to be here, Sian exulted, as she listened with rapt attention, even while her eyes roamed the girls' faces, searching for any she might recognise. There were carols and sacred music from all four corners of the world, including an Irish carol, Christmas Day is Done, and a tender carol by Bach, O, Juselein süss, O Juselein mild.

Interspersed with the music, like ribbon woven through a tapestry, was spoken a selection of poems, extracts from novels, verses from the Bible, all dwelling on the beauteous night they were celebrating. At one point, Mary-Lou’s grave little girl voice repeating Henry Vaughan’s ‘On Christ’s Nativity’ was to be heard all over the Hall.

Oh Mary!!! I'm sorry, but while I enjoyed that whole scene, I couldn't help but hold in my head that image of Sian being wrapped in Hilda's gown to be able to venture out of the house, while reading through the rest of it. I think it was the dual ideas of first and foremost Sian's joy at being allowed to wear the precious garment of one of her beloved characters, but also, the thought which has gone into letting her attend the performance alongside everyone else.

And so, she has been able to meet Joey - that's lovely. Also - in such a setting that Jo can't overwhelm her, but has to stay in a rather piano role herself.

Thank you Mary - I can't think of anything which could have made that better.

.....There were carols and sacred music from all four corners of the world, including an Irish carol, Christmas Day is Done, and a tender carol by Bach, O, Juselein süss, O Juselein mild.

Interspersed with the music, like ribbon woven through a tapestry, was spoken a selection of poems, extracts from novels, words from the Bible, all dwelling on the beauteous night they were celebrating. At one point, Mary-Lou’s grave little girl voice repeating Henry Vaughan’s ‘On Christ’s Nativity’ was to be heard all over the Hall.

By the time the usual finale of the Nativity scene appeared and girls and audience had joined in the singing of Adeste Fideles, there were tears in many eyes, not just Sian’s, and a poignant mixture of joy and sadness in many hearts. There was no applause, just a gradual fading away of the music into a thoughtful silence.

Sian herself was stunned. It had been miraculous. What a privilege to have been allowed to experience it! She tucked one hand into Hilda’s hand and the other into Nell’s and squeezed both gratefully.

They understood and smiled, then rose to their feet, giving the signal to the audience that they could do likewise. Soon, quiet conversation filled the air. Refreshments were served and the girls came out to join their parents and friends, who were gathered in groups around the body of the church. Sian herself stood in the midst of the many groups and turned slowly round and round, taking everything in and storing it all in her heart and mind, to be taken out and examined after this was all over and she had only the books to remind her.

A happy, peaceful atmosphere reigned - and it came to Sian that now was the time to leave. She didn’t want to go, but to return to the hustle and bustle of the school after this wondrous afternoon would be an anti-climax. So, with deep regret in her heart, she looked around and saw Hilda and Nell standing together by the altar, silently observing the scene before them. She walked slowly across to them and reached up to kiss each of them on the cheek and to whisper farewell.

“Going already?” Hilda asked in her soft voice.

Sian nodded, and handed over the MA gown. “I think it might be wise, don’t you? It seems… right, somehow. I’ve loved every single moment and have it all stored away in my heart. Thank you both for everything. You made it all quite perfect. Whenever I read about you, after this, it will mean so very much more.”

They smiled at her once more, their eyes peaceful, and each held her close for a long moment. Her face contorted as she tried hard not to weep. Taking a deep breath, she pulled herself reluctantly away and moved through the throng to the door, Hilda’s “God bless you and keep you, Sian,” falling gently on her ear. She would not soon forget that deep and beautiful voice.

She turned to look at them one last time, then opened the door and slipped through….

……to find herself walking out into the benevolent heat of a sunny afternoon, Mary standing there waiting for her with a face wreathed in smiles. She held out a hand and Sian grasped it as though it were a lifeline.

“I’ve been there myself, so I don’t need to ask if you’ve enjoyed every moment,” Mary murmured, “nor how sad you now feel.”

Sian shook her head, suddenly blinded by tears and totally unable to speak. Mary led her away, back to the real world.

The photos were developed – and proved to be strangely blank, all except one, which showed Hilda and Nell standing beside Sian in the school hallway. The latter was swathed in Hilda’s MA gown, the red hood pulled up over her hair so she matched the velvet ribbon decorating the garland on the banister. The Christmas tree twinkled in the background, the fire sang in the hearth, and Sian was sure she could hear the echo of sweet voices singing:

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie.
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light.
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight……

Wow!

And you actually think I'll be able to string words together after reading that?

Mary, that was amazing. I felt like weeping along with Sian as the time she had with Hilda and co came to an end. I'm so glad that the picture of Sian wearing Hilda's gown came out, if very little else did - am sure she'll treasure that for all the memories it holds for her. What a privilege to be able to go and share this time with everyone.

Thank you for letting us share in it as well - as usual with your writing, I found myself playing far more of an active part than I sometimes do, as I tended to be actually present for each of the scenes as you posted them.

Thank you so much for allowing us all to become involved in Sian's visit through your writing Mary, I think that I think that I would have loved the experience, but am afraid that I might have been so tongue tied that I would not have known what to say.

That was definitely the right time for Sian to leave, wasn't it? And *what* memories she will take with her, even though only one of the photographs survived.

It was a truly unforgettable experience, and one which we've all been able to enjoy vicariously with Sian, thanks to your descriptive powers, Mary. Thank you for allowing us to share it with her.

The perfect ending to a perfect afternoon, Sian was right to leave when she did, leaving as we say in Welsh “yn ei flas” – with happy memories - when everything is just right and cannot be bettered. And although only the one picture survived, Sian has the complete set imprinted in her memory.

Thank you Mary, for allowing us to follow Sian through the doors of Plas Howell as she enjoyed such a special Christmas treat.

Mary,

Although the admission is being wrenched from the very depths of me, because I do so want this to carry on and on, this truly was the perfect place to end the visit, and on such a special and glorious note at one of the high points of the School's year :D

I know how incredibly busy RL has been for you in the last few weeks, and I am so very appreciative of you finding time to craft this specially for my delectation :reading:

Going right back to the beginning now, to savour every moment!

As every one else has commented - a perfect place to conclude this wonderful story!

I can't add anything more to what has already been written as it's all been said so all I can do is add my agreement to the comments and say 'thank you' Mary for letting us all share in this magical visit to Plas Howell.

Thank you! :)
