Post subject:  CHRISTMAS - Day 24 - completed - page 7

I'm very sorry  that through circumstances beyond my control  (and there are some things that even the elves can't fix  ) this has appeared two days late.

Day 1
Three aeroplanes have been chartered. One will depart from the Pacific coast of the United States, and collect girls at requested points throughout the USA and Canada before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to collect any girls from Ireland and Scotland before landing at Gatwick Airport. A second will leave New Zealand, and collect further passengers in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Qatar and Eastern Europe before landing at Gatwick Airport at approximately the same time as the first one. A third will leave South Africa and make any necessary stops in Africa and Western Europe en route to Gatwick. They will be met by a fleet of motor coaches, which will have come from all parts of England and Wales, collecting the rest of the party on the way.

The first stop on the tour is to allow the girls to lay a suitably Christmassy floral tribute for a well known author of stories for girls, whose grave lies in Redstone Cemetery in nearby Redhill. Suitable respects having been paid, the girls clamber aboard the buses for the next stop on their tour. The owner of a house in Staines is slightly surprised by the large number of guests who have turned up for her Christmas Party, but in true Chalet fashion, the house is elastic enough to accommodate them all. Anna has appeared in the kitchen and quickly rustles up plates of Welsh cakes and lemon biscuits while Karen produces little meat pies accompanied by jugs of her own lemonade. After everyone has eaten her fill, party games are enjoyed by all until it is time to board the buses for the next stop.

Day two sees the fleet of motor coaches arriving at Cadbury World. The girls are thrilled to be following in the footsteps of some of their heroines, as well as being given chocolate bars by Father Christmas, himself! There was a minor mishap, as someone nearly fell into a vat of chocolate, but fortunately she was pulled out in the nick of time!

Feeling rather too full to walk far, the girls climb aboard, once more, as the buses set off for Hereford, better known as Armiford, and the Golden Valley. There is great excitement as the girls try to spot The Round House, Plas Gwyn and Plas Howell.

If anybody has any other tales to tell of their adventures on this trip, please feel free to post them here.

The third day of the trip sees the fleet of buses arrive in Hay-on-Wye. The people are somewhat bemused by the hoards of girls who descend on their little town on a quiet Monday morning. As word spreads, any bookshop owners who have thought about having a day off, quickly arrive and open their shops to cater for the eager purchasers.

Laden down with their new books, the girls board the buses, once more, and travel to Tenby on the Welsh coast. Nobody is quite certain whether it is really Carnbach, but everybody keeps an eye open for Cartref and Glendower House anyway.

So that's Dawn happy, then! :D
Lesley, if you'd stayed in that vat, you'd have had to miss out on the rest of the trip. Would you really have wanted that?

Day four is spent rather more quietly exploring the Bosherston Lily Ponds, Pembroke Castle and Caldey Island, which will be open by special arrangement. Only one girl managed to fall into the ponds, but she was quickly pulled out by the others, and dosed with the remaining Cadbury’s chocolate, and some brandy which somebody had had the foresight to bring. She thus escaped Matey’s clutches, and was able to continue with the trip.

The fifth day sees the coaches heading towards the port of Weymouth. There is just time to build sandcastles, or play a game of rounders on the beach, before getting fish and chips for lunch. One of the buckets goes bobbing off to sea, and the rounders ball seems to have vanished without trace, but they are soon replaced in the local shops. Then it is time to leave the fleet of buses behind and catch the ferry to Guernsey.

I'm glad you seem to be enjoying the trip. I hope you've dried out, now, Torri. Hang onto that Schnapps, JackieP - knowing you lot I expect it could be needed.

Day six is to be spent exploring Sark. However the sea is a little choppy, and there is nearly a shipwreck on arrival. Only a bit of very quick thinking on someone’s part saves the day, and everybody manages to get ashore in one piece, if a little damp in some cases. After warming up and drying out with hot chocolate in the hotel, the rest of the day is spent exploring the coves and beaches, before a somewhat calmer return journey. The evening is spent in exploring the attractions of St. Peter Port.

I'm sorry about the uninspiring weblinks - I've had the elves at work all day, and that was the best that they could come up with!

Day seven and time to move on a again. A quick head count shows Elbee to be missing. Further enquiries reveal that no-one has seen her since the previous afternoon, when she was heard to be muttering things about caves and doctors and rescues. An escort elf is quickly despatched to see if he can find her again, otherwise she will miss the rest of the trip. The remainder of the party make the most of the sunshine, and set off to see the rest of Guernsey. Can anybody spot Sarres, Bonne Maison or Les Rosiers? A sheltered spot is found for a picnic lunch atPleinmont, then everyone returns toSt. Peter Port for the ferry to St. Malo. There is just time for a quick look at the old town before heading for the station and Paris. There is great excitement when somebody realises that she has left her book on the bench on the platform at Rennes, and dashes across to fetch it – she is hauled up onto the train by the rest just as it is pulling out of the station.

I'm not quite sure how we managed to lose you at Swansea Railway Station, fio. I thought everybody was aboard the fleet of buses in England and Wales. I've dispatched another escort elf to fetch you. There is an early morning flight from Bristol to Paris, so you can join the rest of the party there. Please make sure you're ready and waiting when he gets to Swansea to take you to the airport.

I'm still waiting for news of Elbee. Obviously there weren't any doctors to rescue her, and the elf is having to search every cave till he finds her.

The rain failed to dampen the spirits of the excited girls as they prepared to spend a couple of days in“the gayest city in the world”. The first stop was a visit to Les Invalides. Then some people prepared to spend the rest of the morning at the Louvre, while others preferred the Eiffel Tower. One small teddy bear got very worried when his owner decided that the latter looked like fun, and wondered if there were any handy parachutes.

The afternoon was spent buying postcards and other small mementos of their visit, followed by a visit to the Luxembourg Gardens. After a good walk, the girls had worked up an appetite for dinner and a cruise along the Seine.

Day 9
Dodging the showers, most of the the girls enjoyed a trip to Versailles. Sadly two people were in bed with streaming colds after an accident in the Seine the previous evening. There was almost an accident with a chandelier, but fortunately it was averted by some quick thinking on someone’s part. A game of hide-and-seek in the grounds was a bit more worrying, though. Two people were found to be missing when it was time to return to Paris afterwards. An escort elf was left behind to carry on searching, while the rest of the party made their way to Notre Dame. There was plenty of time to look around the great cathedral, before those who wanted to stay, attended Vespers and Mass. Then it was time for dinner and bed. There would be a very early start in the morning.

Day ten saw everybody up and ready to depart before daylight. New high-speed trains mean that it is no longer possible to get an over-night sleeper to Basle from Paris without taking a very devious route and changing trains at some unearthly hour! However a good breakfast on the train meant that everyone was ready for a sightseeing trip round Basle on arrival. Then it was time for another train to Schaffhausen and a visit to the Falls of the Rhine. When it was time to depart, it was discovered that some of the accompanying soft toy animals had become a bit over-excited by the water, and had almost been left behind playing in the river. Fortunately none of the girls actually fell in, although it did look as though some of them were trying to.

Lake Thun was not quite as blue as it might have been, but a trip was made to the Harder to see the animals. After lunch the party walked to Unterseen. Then some people retired to a café for a hot drink, while others constructed a large snowman. Only minor injuries resulted from the evening’s snow fight!

The lakes really are blue, aren't they! It was cold and wet last time I went to Interlaken so I didn't really get to see the lake.

(Very Chalet moment when my daughter and I took the cable car up the mountain: my daughter, who does not read the books, suddenly said, 'I wonder what would happen if there was a power cut.'!! She wondered why I burst out laughing! )

Day 12
Although the forecast was for snow, the girls were lucky to have a clear day for a ride on the Jungfrau railway. On the return trip everyone got out at Wengen to see if they could detect any similarities to the Gornetz Platz. One person thought she saw Freudesheim, but there was no school conveniently next door, nor was anybody bowled over by the St. Bernard who came to meet them. Two girls thought another building might be a sanatorium, and hung around hoping to stage an accident should any doctors happen to pass by. They were so engrossed that they missed the coffee and cakes, and only just caught the last train down the mountain.

Day thirteen saw the excited girls arrive at Innsbruck. Eagerly they follow the footsteps of their heroines as they explore the Hofkirche. Then everyone tries to spot the Mensch’s apartment in the Mariahilfe. Next it is time to see the famous Golden Roof. After a last walk along theMariatheresien Strasse in the moonlight it is time to go back to the station again. It seems as though a day has passed without incident or mishap for once.

Day 14
The first stop of the morning is a visit to the church at Jenbach, which the girls keep calling Spärz to the bemusement of the local residents. They can see no sign of any steps under the altar, so they have a look outside to see if they can find a secret passage up to the mountainside.

After that it is time for a trip on the specially chartered train up the Zillertal to Mayrhofen. A few brave souls venture up to the glacier at Hintertux, whilst the rest content themselves with a stroll around the shops in the town before having coffee and cakes in one of the many cafés around.

I'm sure doctors have better things to do, than pull girls out of lakes when they keep falling in! I've despatched another escort elf to rescue you, Fiona. Another will have to stay behind in Innsbruck to look for the girl who failed to turn up at the station on time last night. I do hope nobody has any accidents on the glacier today - the elves have other duties at this time of year, too!

Day 15
On a sunny, but very cold morning the girls assemble at the station to catch the train on the little mountain railway up to the Achensee. There are mixed feelings on arrival at Seespitz – the lake isn’t yet frozen, so there can be no skating, but it does mean that there is a boat waiting to take them on the next leg of their journey to Pertisau, or Briesau as many think of it.

A chalet close to the lake has been taken for the week. It may need a little more work to make it really comfortable, but the elves have done their best for you. There will be plenty of time for expeditions to the dripping rock and the Sonnalpe amongst other places.

Please try not to have any more accidents – the nearest hospital is at Schwaz, which is well on the way back to Innsbruck! I believe there is a doctor who practices in the area – Josephine Russell is the daughter of a David Russell who retired recently, but she is very busy with her normal duties. I really need to take the elves back to the North Pole now; it’s one of our busiest times of year, you know, and I have had to take far too many elves off their usual activities to rescue girls who’ve got lost along the way. If we work doubly hard next week, we may just catch up in time to make the expected deliveries on Christmas Eve! The elves have installed some cameras for me, so I can keep an eye on things while I’m away.

Day 23
The elves and I have now caught up with all of our work. We just need to pack up all the toys and deliver them tomorrow night. I hope you have all enjoyed your week at the Achensee. Today I have chartered a fleet of motor buses to take you all to Kufstein. After a walk around the old town you should have plenty of time to see the old fortress. We’ll finish the day with a cruise along the Inn.

Day 24
Today there is just time for a quick tour of Salzburg, including seeing the locations of the Sound of Music for anybody who wants to. Then it’s off to the airport where the aircraft are waiting. I have left one escort elf who will make sure everybody catches the right flight home again. The rest of them have come with me to help with the deliveries, which we have already started.
