Margot sat on the back of the sled, and hesitated, a sudden surge of unease came over her, and she stood up. ‘No, Emmy! We mustn’t! Emmy - don’t!’
But Margot’s words were not enough to discourage Emmy. ‘Funker! Baby!’
Emmy lifted her heels, and felt the sting of the icy air rushing past her face as the sled gathered speed over the crisp, frozen snow of the run. The sled caused tiny pieces of ice to be sprayed up over and around her as it made its way down the mountain. Margot had started screaming, and Mary-Lou, further down the slope had dropped the rope of her sled, and started to climb up at a great pace. Mary-Lou began to shout instructions. ‘Steer to the right.’
Emmy realised that unless she changed course she would send the sled into the crowd of girls who had already been thrown into the snow in the earlier incident. At the same time, Mlle de Lachennais cried out that everyone should stop, and move no nearer. Emmy felt a wave of panic, and pulled on the ropes of her sled, sending it off course, as Mary-Lou came closer up the mountain.
The sled hit a snag hidden under the snow, and the momentum threw Emmy across the run in an arc towards Mary-Lou. She felt the breath knocked out of her, as the flying body hit her full in the chest, and carried her backwards into a pine tree. Then everything went black.
At the top of the run, Margot began to cry, and then to run toward the site of the accident, she felt the cold, salt tears running down her face, as she watched Vi pulling Emmy away from Mary-Lou. Biddy had rushed to the scene, and with Vi’s help, her touch was shaken but tender as she turned Mary-Lou onto her back, her unconscious weight heavy in her hands.

I liked that, Cat, but no idea as to the author...

I wrote it with a copy of one of his books open beside me, and lifted a few of the phrases directly, but he doesn't have a madly distinctive style, really.

Think hugely popular, and fairly recent.

Complete guess and at the risk of looking stupid - Dan Brown? (Would it be nasty to him to say it looks too well written for the guess to be true?! :) )

Well done James! I used The Da Vinci Code for reference, and the title was intended as a sort of play on Angels and Demons (which I've never so much as opened, but I was a bit stuck for what to call it without making it screamingly obvious...)

I wouldn't worry about being nasty to DB - I don't think he does badly out of his books! I mentioned this whole thing to someone, and she said that a lot of the way he writes is intended to translate directly into a screen play - hence, I suppose, all the 'she turned her head' stuff and "insights" into what the characters are thinking and feeling.
