There was a knock on the door.
“What is it now?” groaned Catherine, looking up yet again from her newly-acquired copy of Peace Comes to the Chalet School. It really hadn’t been her day: no sooner had she settled down with her book, having put Elijah down for his afternoon nap, than there had come a steady stream of interruptions: first her husband had dashed back in, having forgotten some vital piece of equipment for his second exam of the day, then there’d been two wrong numbers in a row, then the postman dropping off a parcel for next door… all in all, Catherine was starting to wonder if she’d ever make it past the first layer of her special box of chocolates-for-reading-Chalet-books-by.
Reluctantly she forced herself off the sofa and crossed the room. The knock sounded again.
“OK, OK, hang on!” she grumbled. She struggled briefly with the lock, which seemed to have stuck, before finally managing to wrench it open, to behold –
No-one.
Muttering under her breath, Catherine was about to slam the door when she spotted a tattered envelope lying on the path. She picked it up and turned it over: there was no address, just her initials, CS, written on it. Puzzled, she carefully slit it open. Strange – it seemed to be an alphabetical list of charity shops – a whole range, both large and small, mostly in Scotland but some in northern England too. She looked closer: each was numbered, but apparently at random, from 1 to… yes, 58. What could this mean?
She read on: at the bottom of the page was scrawled a lime-green message:
“CS originals – free to a good CS home! Tell no-one! Happy ChristmaS!”
A grin spread over Catherine’s face: she turned and ran into the house, threw a few clothes for herself and Elijah into a bag, scribbled a note to her husband – “Away for a while – urgent CS business – good luck for the rest! Should be back by Christmas. Love CS.” – and, picking up her son, scrambled into the car to begin her epic journey.

Enjoy them, Catherine!

Oooooh. Thank-you thank-you! I've just found this just now. I must admit I did blush at the 'grumbled' bit. I am a bit like that at the moment! And, actually, hubby has just dashed out the door to catch the 9.54 train to his exam (and Elijah is perched on the hard-drive, trying to crack the code to my phone lock). That's just fabbity. Thank-you, Secret Santa, for the best, most cheering gift!

P.S., Hands off my books, Susan!

Oh excellent! So is there a list floating about anywhere for *those* charity shops in Ireland? *assumes innocent look*
Love the lime-green scrawl at the end Laughing
