Post subject:  An Action Explained - A Gather Drabble

As some are aware I managed to leave my drabble at home when I went to the Gather last weekend! So on the Saturday afternoon I wrote another one - inspired by some of the talk at breakfast.

“Mary Lou! How wonderful to see you again!”

Joey Maynard’s golden tones washed over the tall girl and she found herself being dragged into the Saal of Freudesheim. She gave her coat, hat and gloves to her smiling hostess and went and stood in front of the roaring log fire burning brightly at one end of the large room. With a sigh she turned, allowing the fire to warm her back, and gazed at the snow capped peak of the Jungfrau. She looked across as Joey re-entered the room,

“Oh it’s lovely to be back, Joey,” she said. “I have missed all of you.”

Joey swept Mary Lou into her arms, “And I have missed you, the entire School misses you too.”

“Oh I’m sure the School is managing perfectly well,” Mary Lou said with a smile, “I’m just pleased that the wedding went well.”

Joey’s expression changed, “I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there,” she said, “I really wanted to but Jack was quite insistent that I should not travel. Hilda tells me the service went well?”

Mary Lou nodded, “Yes, it did, and Alan is a wonderful partner for Verity.”

“More than a partner,” Joey replied, “I’ve always said that Verity is a broken reed, it’s good that she has a strong man to lean on – it really wasn’t fair on you. You looked after her almost all of your school life, didn’t you?”

“Well yes, but...”

“I always thought that such a pity,” Joey continued blithely, “that she relied on you to ensure that all her chores were done.”

“Oh it wasn’t really like that,” Mary Lou began; she was not allowed to finish her sentence, however...

“I felt it showed just how strong you were, Mary Lou, and, unfortunately, also showed just how weak and feeble Verity-Anne became...”

“Oh stop, stop, stop!” The plea from Mary Lou was unexpected and stopped Joey in her tracks,

“Why Mary Lou, what on Earth is the matter, child?” Joey looked across in astonishment. Mary Lou shook her head and sat in silence for some time. Eventually she took a deep breath and gazed across at her mentor,

“I suppose it doesn’t matter now,” she began, “I mean it’s not likely that Verity will ever find out – you must give me your word that you will never tell a soul about this.”

“Why of course,” Joey said airily, “you know me, Mary Lou; I’m the soul of discretion.”

Mary Lou raised an eyebrow, “I do know you, Joey,” she said with some emphasis, “so I’ll have your word that you will tell no-one about this, not Jack, not any of your children, adoptees or wards, not your servants, not anyone from the School, no-one.”

“Oh but...”

“I mean it, Joey,” Mary Lou’s voice held more than a hint of Head Girl and Joey subsided,

“Oh very well, you have my word,” she said sulkily, “so, tell me.”

Mary Lou took another deep breath, “Have you never wondered where the idea that Verity 'mooned around' came from?”

“Of course not,” Jo replied, “she was always in a dream, always needed looking after...”

“Not always,” Mary Lou replied, “when we first started at the school she was a stubborn little thing with some funny ideas – but just as sharp as any of us.”

Jo thought for a moment, “Why, so she did, then what changed?”

“It was a few years later and Verity had become tired of all the jobs we had to do in the dormitory. She asked me to do them for her – I refused, told her not to be so lazy. That’s when she did it.”

“Did what?” There was silence, so Jo repeated her question, “What did she do, Mary Lou?”

Mary Lou bit her lip, “Well let me put it this way, Jo,” she began, “rather than have her repeat it I was willing, for the rest of my school life, to do all her jobs, to tidy up after her and basically be her willing slave.”

“But what did she do?” Joey asked impatiently.

“She mooned me!”
