Something was different about the office. Alison looked around, trying to work it out. The computer looked quite normal – screen, keyboard, mouse. The chair was much the same with casters on the bottom, and levers to make it tilt or swivel. The desk was just a desk with stationery and a filing tray as well as the computer on it and drawers underneath. Even the pen pot looked like any other pen pot. It did seem to be very well equipped having writing pens with red, green, blue and black ink, highlighters in yellow, orange, pink, green and blue as well as ordinary pencils, coloured pencils and felt pens in more colours than Alison had ever seen before. There were also rubbers, sharpeners, sticky tape dispensers, drawing pins, blu-tack, staplers and those cunning things for taking the staples out again. Nothing unusual, but plenty of everything that might be needed in a well-run office.

Everything seemed very bright, but that was probably because of all the light streaming through the big window. Sunshine was reflecting off a blanket of pristine white snow. The light was catching the coloured baubles and silver tinsel on the fir tree standing in the corner next to the window. Coloured streamers were strung across the room and a bunch of balloons in each corner gave it a very festive appearance. Well it was still only just after Christmas, but could this really be Manchester? Alison could hear music from the corridor outside. Strains of ‘Jingle Bells’ with lots of voices singing along to it. What would the boss have to say?

Just as the music stopped and a loud bell was heard pealing the door marked ‘I’m the Boss!’ opened.

“Ho! Ho! Ho! That’s the bell for elevenses!” A man in a red suit emerged and told Alison. “If you don’t mind, I thought we’d have it in my office this morning so I can run through your duties.”

“Of course not!”, Alison replied, and got up to follow the boss into the office, just as a tray was brought in. It was lavishly laid with a jug full of steaming hot chocolate and marshmallows or chocolate curls to be sprinkled on top, as well as a plate of delicious looking gingerbread biscuits. While they sipped their drinks and nibbled on the biscuits, the two put their heads together over the paperwork. It all appeared quite straight forward to Alison, although the boss seemed a bit bemused by it at times. They’d just finished going through it all, when the bell pealed again.

“Lunch time!”, said the boss with a grin. “Come on – I’ll take you to the canteen. Then I’ll get someone to show you around all the rest of the place this afternoon. There’s no need to come back here till tomorrow morning. Take your time to get to know everybody and get settled in.”

Delicious smells were wafting from a big room at the end of the corridor. Alison suddenly realised that she was very hungry despite the snack she’d just eaten. She looked longingly at the steaming plate full of stew, vegetables and dumplings she’d just been given.

“It’s all right, my dear! Go ahead and enjoy it!” A beaming round-faced woman stood next to her. “He doesn’t realise it”, she said with a nod in the direction of the boss, “but since I married him I’ve been introducing a low-fat healthy eating plan, so go ahead and tuck in. There’s fruit jelly and ice cream afterwards, too.”

Alison found a place to sit at the end of one of the long tables. Someone came and sat next to her.

“Are you Alison?”, he said diffidently.

“Yes, I am!” Alison smiled back at him.

“I wanted to thank you for all your help”, he went on, shyly. “With the carols, I mean. I was in such a muddle, and time was running out before Christmas.”

“I was happy to help.” Alison realised that this must be the elf she’d heard about from Santa.

After lunch, the elf showed Alison all over the toy workshops. Although they weren’t producing any toys, the elves were hard at work on the annual maintenance session. Then they went outside. Alison was shown the large shed that housed the sleighs. They were being checked for any signs of wear and tear, and re-furbished when necessary. Finally Alison was introduced to Rudolph and the other reindeer. They were having races around their snowy paddock, to keep fit, the elf explained.

“That’s tea!”, said the elf as the bell pealed again. They went back to the canteen and Alison was given a bowlful of savoury soup and some crusty bread, still warm from the oven, to go with it. Then there was fresh fruit and slices of cake, too. Afterwards the elf showed Alison the library, the video room, the gym, the swimming pool and the big hall. He explained that they could spend their free time after work in any of those places or they could go to their rooms.

Alison was beginning to feel quite at home, now. Even her room reminded her of student days – just enough space for a bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers as well as a desk and chair, a bookcase and a comfortable chair. From the window there was a snowy expanse stretching as far as the eye could see, and the en-suite bathroom was spotless, end equipped with a pile of fluffy white towels and a basket of toiletries containing everything she could possibly want.

Alison was beginning to wonder if it was time to go to bed and curl up with a good book when the elf spoke again.

“I hope you don’t mind me saying, but I think you look really pretty! That blue suit matches your eyes and the crimson cap, belt and shoes match the roses in your cheeks. I like the silver buckles and buttons, too.” Alison was pleased that she’d chosen the gentian blue outfit instead of the brown one. It felt good to have someone telling her that she looked nice.

“We’re going to have some dancing in the big hall, now. Would you like to come with me?” The elf was starting to feel a bit less shy of Alison, now. “Please!”, he added.

“Of course I will!” How could Alison resist him when he’d asked so nicely.

“Oh, good! Thank you!” The elf took her by the hand and they danced off down the corridor together.
