Post subject:  Advent Drabbles 2009. Intro and 1st day - Verity-Anne Carey

This year we have not been able to produce a set of amusing tales to entertain you in the count down to the holidays. Our offering this year is, unfortunately, rather more serious and, on occasion, macabre. Through diligent research a number of quite disturbing crimes committed by members of that formerly well-known and renowned establishment know as the Chalet School have come to light. Will they change your views on this hot-bed of criminal activity? Only by reading these can you make that decision for yourself. While many hundreds of crimes were discovered there were twenty four individuals who merited particular mention – these individuals all managed to commit a crime before arriving at the Chalet School, during their time attending the School in whatever capacity and then after leaving the School – or, in the case of some individuals, after the last of the original histories had been written.

As there have been three researchers assigned to these cases they will all be detailing their own work. Therefore, for each day you will have the crimes of a particular individual in three parts, those parts will be designated Prior to the Chalet School, During the Chalet School and After the Chalet School. They may not be in that, or indeed any, particular order.

Verity Anne – Before attending the Chalet School

This file is subject to the official secrets act and must not be released until all persons involved have died or fifty years have passed. They are however to be kept active by the security services and a level one surveillance is to be maintained.

The statement from the cook was to the effect that “Miss Verity” was a very self contained creature, old fashioned in her outlook, and very precise in her manners. When she returned from Church on Advent Sunday and mentioned a friend of the Curate's who knew her father and was interested in seeing some of his maps the cook did not question but accepted this at face value, and prepared a tea tray as requested.

The maid who took the tray into the study said that the visitor was 'a gentleman' and obviously was rather taken with him, describing his features as 'like a film star' and his speech as 'one of those voices that makes you listen'. She also added that “Miss Verity was showing the gentleman some of her father's maps, and the drawings he had sent home from his current trip. She is very proud of her father.”

The local curate claims that the gentleman, whom we have yet to capture, was not known to him before this last few days, but that he met him while out during Parish Visiting. It appears that 'Mr Grey', no doubt a pseudonym, had said he was interested in cartography and was able to show the curate several hand drawn maps of the local area he had made. This lead to several discussions about the locality and eventually about local personalities, including Commander Carey. He then introduced him to Verity-Anne on the Sunday as 'A gentleman interested in your Father's work.' The curate has been thoroughly investigated and cleared of all suspicion. He knows no more of Commander Carey other than that he is a renown cartographer on a well publicised expedition.

What exactly transpired between 'Mr Grey' and Miss Carey we do not know. We do know that they met twice and that on the second occasion Mr Grey took copies of some of the recent maps. These are the maps which we believe are coded and the originals are now attached to this report. There is the possibility that Mr Grey deceived the child, and this is the explanation we have been at pains to spread amongst the locals. However there is also the possibility that Verity-Anne was acting according to her Father's instructions, although we have no evidence of this. Indeed we are not sure if 'Mr Grey' is working for the same people Commander Carey is suspected of working for, or if he works for one of the other interested parties. We do know that he is not working for His Majesties Government and is acting against the interests of this country at a very fragile time in International Relations. There is also the worrying thought that Miss Carey was fully aware she was passing on sensitive information and did so for her own reasons.

We may never know the full story, especially as it involved such a young child, and yet the possibility remains that Miss Carey was not an unwilling dupe, too young to understand the consequences of her actions, but was at eight years old already very skilled at presenting a believable persona to the world that would get her exactly what she wanted. Given her father's background and our suspicions of him, she requires careful treatment and we recommend placing her in the Chalet School as soon as possible where several of our operatives are already at work and a vigilant watch can be maintained as it is on several other suspect young women. Keeping them together is risky as they may form alliances between themselves, but it enables us to not only keep a tight surveillance and restrict their movements, but it also provides us with an opportunity to educate these young women and try to turn them while they are young enough to be moulded.

If our suspicions are correct then it is to be expected that over the next few years Miss Carey will be seen to be pedantically patriotic, maybe even looking for an opportunity to affirm to the world around her that she is a truly patriotic English girl. This is should not be taken at face value.

Verity-Ann Carey - after she left the school

Verity Trevor, once Verity-Ann Carey of the Chalet School, and now the loving mother of 20 daughters, all of whom were attending her old school, checked that she had all the equipment that she needed safely stowed in the boot of her car. With all her girls away in Switzerland and her husband at work she had plenty of time, time for what she needed anyway.

This was not the first time she’d made a trip like this. The first had been many years ago, when her ‘sister-by-marriage’ had been at university and her step mother had just died. Then she’d been able to put it down to her grief. She had rather collapsed, she knew that. She also knew that many people thought of her as weak and needing support. She smiled to herself at the thought. Weak was she? Well she’d beaten Jo Maynard at her own game, hadn’t she? Including producing the quads that Jo had never managed. That first time had been the most frightening, as she was feeling her way, and also she had people wanting to look after her. But she’d done it, escaped them all and done it, and all before her wedding too.

With Mary-Lou out of the country so much after she’d left university, the opportunities had been slim, but whenever she was in the country, Verity had struck. Poor Mary-Lou had wondered what bad fortune was stalking her, never thinking that it could be her weak little sister. But Verity had resented Mary-Lou running around after her at school. She had protested once or twice, but Mary-Lou had ridden rough-shod over her protests, declaring that she’d never be ready in time if she was left to her own devices. So she’d slowed down even more, taking all the time she needed to bath and dress, but all the time harbouring a deep-seated resentment that she was at pains to hide.

Now Mary-Lou had returned to take up a post at her old university, and had been having a wonderful time getting a house ready for herself. She and Verity had finished redecorating only last weekend. The house was detached, with garden all around it, a suitable place of residence for a professor of archaeology. it looked lovely too, even though none of Mary-Lou’s personal possessions and ornaments had yet been installed. Verity turned into the drive and parked her car facing the road. Then she let herself into the house with the spare key and checked that it was empty. It looked wonderful, with the Christmas tree already up and decorated, and the streamers criss-crossing the room. Once she was sure she was alone, she gathered her equipment from the car and set about her task. Her final act was to light the carefully laid fire in the grate and leave the house, locking the door behind her.

She was at home when the phone rang. Mary-Lou was in a real state.

“Verity! You’ve got to come! It’s happened again!”

“What has Mary-Lou. You’re not making a lot of sense.”

“Nor would you if it was your house that had caught fire! Luckily someone saw it before it had got really going and called the fire brigade or Heaven knows what would have happened.”

Verity cursed under her breath and out loud made all the right noises.

“I’ll be right over, Mary-Lou,” she said. “It was fine last time I saw it. Do they know where it started?”

“It looks as if it was in the Drawing Room. They say it spread from the fireplace, but I haven’t lit a fire there before, so how could it?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t suppose all the Christmas decorations helped much did they?. I’ll come over straight away Mary-Lou. Just let me get my coat and leave a note for Trevor.”

As she settled into her car for the second time that day, Verity hummed a little tune to herself. Days like these were always good days.

Verity-Ann Carey - During the Chalet School

Verity-Ann Carey was exceedingly annoyed, though to look at her you would never have known it. She still appeared to be the same slight elfin-like girl with the long golden hair as always. Still spoke in the same light, 'silvery' voice that, although not strong nevertheless had the knack of immediately attracting attention. However, though she was still recognisably the same person, now she was fourteen, she had definitely grown from the new girl of four years earlier. As Verity-Ann had entered her teenage years one of the things she had found more difficult was getting up in the mornings. It was not that she couldn't get up in the mornings – it was that she didn't want to. And she had arranged a perfect solution – Mary Lou was always short of money, while Verity-Ann managed her extremely well – so why not allow Mary Lou to 'run around' after her in the mornings so that Verity could get an extra thirty minutes sleep? The arrangement worked well, Mary Lou was happy with the extra cash and Verity-Ann had a nice leisurely start to the day. Then it all went wrong – Matey interfered – said that Mary Lou was not allowed to help, that Verity-Ann must get up on time and do her own jobs. And all this only weeks before Christmas? Verity was getting more and more tired and Mary Lou was getting desperate, she had been relying on the money from Verity to pay for her Christmas presents. Verity-Ann thought deeply for some time before making plans.

Mary Lou had been puzzled at Verity's actions over the last few days; she'd watched as Verity had calmly complied with Matey's orders and forced herself to get up on time each morning then, out of the blue, Verity had been rude to one of the Prefects and been punished by having to forgo her Saturday evening entertainment and spend the time hemming sheets with Matey. Then, about a week later Verity pulled Mary Lou to one side,

“I managed to get some pictures developed when in Interlaken yesterday so we can go back to our former arrangement. Starting tomorrow, alright? Here's something on account,” she pressed some notes into her friend's hand.

“But what about Matey?”

“Don't you worry about Matey,” Verity-Ann said with a smile, “I've fixed her, Matey always has a large pot of tea brewing in her room. Well last Saturday night I added a little extra – a small bottle of vodka I swiped from Aunt Joey – Matey seemed to enjoy it! Here, take a look.”

Mary Lou looked down at the picture Verity was holding, Matey was stripped down to her underclothes and swinging from the light fixtures, “You mean?”

“I mean that Matey knows that if she interferes again then copies of this will go to Madame and the Abbess.”

It's all mixed up, we are all doing some before, some during and some after. That is one reason why they won''t be posted in chronological order.
