No one every thought about her. She might as well not have existed. Yes, they knew her name, they knew who she was...well sort of...but only on very general terms. From the time she was born she was overlooked. When her mother was discharged from the nursing home she got half way to the car before she remembered she was meant to be carrying a baby. And that was how she thought of her? Him? It? The baby.

Samaris knew she wasn't invisible. Her needs were taken care of, although there was a degree of routine to it and she sometimes thought that if she had not been there her meals would still be prepared as regularly as clockwork, but as she grew a little older she appreciated being left largely to her own devices. There are some advantages to being the person who can sit on the front row in class and still never be called on to answer a question.

Welsh Chapel blood running through her veins it was a long time before Samaris thought much about the advantages her special brand of peculiarities gave her. She didn't feel the need to be sneaky, to take matters into her own hand until the day she had been refused a second helping of cake. She couldn't see why she shouldn't have and when her parents started discussing the price of bread she calmly helped herself to a large slice. No one noticed.

Over a period of several years, Samaris experimented. It seemed to be connected to three things, firstly the distraction provided by other topics, such as a discussion about the weather with the gasman; secondly the amount by which someone else could be considered responsible for her or for the situation; and thirdly the level of noise she made, esp in relation to background noise. However the more she thought about being invisible, the more she was. She often wondered how useful it would be as she grew, what it would be like to be able to go totally invisible at will although she rarely gave any thought as to why she had this skill, presuming it was just a natural talent.

It wasn't until she was old enough to walk to school by herself that she ventured to try out her talent on anything more risky that the odd piece of cake or unlearned homework. It started out almost by accident, if choosing to break the law can ever be called accident. She forgot her purse one day, and knowing that her favourite magazine would sell out before the next day just walked out of the shop with it. Her heart was beating like mad, but she concentrated and was not stopped. From then on she never paid for another magazine. Nor chocolate.

How interesting! If only I could get away with such behaviour, especially with regard to magazines and chocolate, but such is NOT my luck. I can't get away with anything.

Samaris Davies checked over the items laid out on her dining room table, and nodded. Everything she needed was there - instructions, wire hangers, tinsel, tape, small metal lids, and candles. She settled down to her task, cutting the hooks off two of the hangers and wiring each to one of the others, before fixing both sets together. Then she wired the lids to the four corners of her frame, and one in the base. Once this was complete she began to wind the tinsel around the hangers. While she worked, she thought, and her thoughts were not pleasant. Specifically she was contemplating battle, murder and sudden death.
It had started the day she'd visited the doctor's surgery for the first - and, she vowed - the only time. Doctor Masefield was only a few years older than she was, and had formed a violent attachment to her on sight. An attachment that was far from being reciprocated. Since then he'd taken to calling round whenever he was 'in the area'. At least, she thought, it was only during the day. He knew that she was out most evenings playing with the orchestra, so the only time he could pester her was in daylight. He had been there only that morning, and she'd felt, as usual, that she had to offer him a cup of tea, even if it was only out of politeness. Her tea varied enormously on these occasions. Some days it was a weak as dishwater, and on others it was so strong that it could have supported the tea spoon. Today had been a strong day, and as usual he had ignored the fact that the brew was virtually undrinkable, and complimented her on it.

"You always make such a good cup of tea, Miss Davies," he said in the voice that made her want to throw up.

"I'm so glad you like it," she replied. "I'm sorry I have no cake or biscuits to go with it, but I really wasn't expecting visitors."

By the time he finally took himself away she was ready to hit her head against a wall in anger and frustration. He never touched her, or even tried to, but she felt as if he had, since his eyes did the job for him. Now she was thinking hard about how to deal with the problem; to get rid of him once and for all without any repercussions falling upon herself. She looked at what her hands were making and smiled slowly. An idea had come to her, and now it only needed to be carried out successfully.

A few days later her pet hate called round again. She had hung the Advent Crown in the hall, and as the doctor was finally leaving she grabbed it and pulled it over his head and round his neck, pulling hard and twisting. It didn't take very long, and then he was lying at her feet, still, grey, and very, very dead. She left him lying there, and putting on her coat and hat left the house, only returning at her normal late hour. Opening the front door, and revealing the still, cold body of the doctor, she screamed loudly and ran out into the street. Throughout the investigations she maintained her innocence, and lack of knowledge. She had no idea how the doctor had got into her house, nor how the Advent Crown had come to be around his neck. Although being the obvious suspect, since there was no sign of forced entry by either the doctor or his killer, there was no evidence either, nor any possible motive, and the police decided that they could not even charge her.

I think there are plenty of people on this board who would have found a difference use for that doctor! How extravgant to waste one like that.

During the Chalet School

Samaris Davies scowled to herself; she was still getting comments from the rest of Upper IVb about her visit to see Nina Rutherford in the San. Not all the girls, it was true, but a larger percentage just wouldn't let it go. No matter how many times she said that it was Mrs Maynard who had decided to take Samantha van der Byl and herself to see the ex-pupil who was recovering from a bad road accident it just did not seem to be sinking in. It was time they all learnt a lesson, the idiots were not even sharing any treats or cakes with her and any girls who supported her. For a while Samaris was not sure what she could do, then a sudden thought came to her and she smiled,

'Perfect, just perfect,' her smiled faded, 'only, where do I get the ingredients? Oh, I know.'

That night, after all, even the Staff, had retired to bed, Samaris crept out of her dormitory and across to Matey's room. With just a small torch to light her way she found herself in the main room where Matey kept all her pills and potions, the ones she wanted were locked up but Samaris used an old lock pick of hers – one fashioned as a hair grip and easily opened the door. She swept a number of small tablets into her hand.

A few days later nearly half Upper IVb were suddenly struck down with a terrible bout of sickness and worse, strangely the illness only affected those girls who had been so unpleasant toward Samaris.

“I can't understand it,” Matey said in some frustration, looking round at her full San of groaning teenagers, “it doesn't seem to be infectious yet how have fully half the class gone down with something? They all eat the same things.”

Samaris smiled to herself, she knew that the girls would refuse to share the toffee that had appeared a few afternoons ago – the toffee had a label stating it was for all from Nina in appreciation of Samaris' visit. However Samaris had made certain to leave the toffee where only the other girls would find it, knowing they would eat all of it and not share with the rest of the class. She blessed her Welsh Grannie and her recipe for 'relieving obstructions' as she so delicately put it.

Matey continued talking to herself, “If I didn't know better I would say the girls have all taken an overdose of senna tablets.”

Brilliant idea. Serves them right. I never really understood why the rest of the girls minded so much - they'd hardly have known Nina. Glad they got their comeuppance.

I agree that that was one wasted doctor! But good on her afterwards; maybe not a True Chalet Girl, but certainly an entertaining one. Thankyou!
