Odette walked sedately into the bank. Briefcase in hand; suit not only smart and fashionable, but uncreased and worn 'just so', all the lines falling exactly where she wanted them; shoes with high heels, drawing understated attention to her legs. She looked in charge. She had a good education behind her and it showed in everything she did.

Initially school had been hard, she missed her mother and was so homesick she made herself ill. However the ethos of the school had soon put a stop to that and she had learned to hide her feelings and thoughts away beneath many layers. Her deep eyes now gave away no clues as to what she thinking or feeling and she appeared composed as she walked across the marble floor, around a tall Christmas tree surrounded by fake presents towards the teller.

Another useful skill she picked up at school was her ability to think and speak in several languages. Although she spoke only French when she started at the Chalet School, their famed trilingual curriculum had swiftly ensured she was also fluent in both German and English after a term and after several years she could chatter away like a native in several European languages. Not that she was prone to chatter. Her own people, those who worked for her rarely heard her speak of anything outside of business. Having said which that was the nature of their business, you didn't pry into people's personal life. That too was a lesson learned at school, what happened at school was kept there, and what happened at home was kept there. You didn't ask questions if someone wasn't forthcoming. Today she employed these skills by swiftly stating her demands in German, since she was in a German bank.

Yes, her demands. She was not here to make a deposit, but a withdrawal. A large withdrawal. A large and unauthorized withdrawal to be precise. After stating her demands she opened her briefcase and withdrew a gun. A swift look around showed her that her people had all been in place and had done the same. The teller, following protocol, slowly filled the briefcase, slipping in an ink pack.

“Take the ink pack out,” ordered Odette, again in perfect German, “or I shoot.” Her voice was cold and clipped.
The teller gulped and did as she was told.

There was a movement to one side, a security guard trying to inch closer. Oddette turned and shot, taking his knee out with a single bullet. As much as she had hated games at school, they too came in useful, accuracy with a cricket ball was just the same as accuracy with anything else, including a bullet.

Briefcase filled with high denomination notes, Odette clicked the clasp and strolled to the door. She waved her people to withdraw, all the time keeping her gun trained on a random cashier. As the alarm began to sound she checked her watch. This had been timed to the second, she knew exactly when the automatic alarm would go off and her timekeeping was impeccable. The limo drew up to the front of the building as she walked through the door and she opened the door and climbed in.

Touching up her lipstick as the car sped away towards the autobhan she reflected on the many advantages of an English boarding school education.

The Chalet School as a school for international criminals? That could have gone well.

Well, I'm pleased to see that she's putting her good education to some use!

Thankyou.

This has a slightly different take on that young lady!

Kathie Ferrars walked out into the courtyard just in time to see her car disappearing through the entrance. She stopped in shock, wondering who on earth could be driving it. Nancy was in the staff room, she knew that as she'd only just come from there herself. Jack Lambert she'd passed in the corridor, and anyway, she knew Jack would never go off with it like that. She'd asked Jack to check the oil and water for her, as she was going down into Interlaken to do some Christmas shopping, and to leave the keys in the ignition. This was usually safe, as there was no crime on the Platz, but this was clearly not the case now. Kathie hurried back into the school and rang the police.

Meanwhile the car was being driven a bit erratically down the steep hillside from the Gornetz Platz. The driver seemed to be inexperienced, for the car's pace varied between too fast on the straights, and too slow round the many corners, sometimes only just managing to get round the hairpin bends. Nevertheless it was making good time, and head got all the way to the valley floor before the police helicopter picked it up. Even though it was now on relatively straight dual carriageways it seemed as though the driver found it hard to make it go in a straight line, for the car was behaving as though the driver was drunk, weaving from side to side. A couple of police cars picked it up and followed, sirens wailing, but the car didn't pull over. Just kept on going, round the lake to Thun and then out on the road north towards Berne. Once clear of built-up areas the police cars boxed it in and guided it to a halt at the side of the road. In the car they found a teenage girl, in the uniform of the Chalet School, sitting slumped at the wheel, with tears running down her face. She was helped from the car and into the back one of the police cars, where she was joined by one of the men. He offered a box of tissues and she took one, mopping ineffectually at her eyes.

"Now suppose you tell me what your name is and exactly what you were doing," he said gently.

"I'm Odette Mercier, and I was going home," she sniffed forlornly. "Mummy's not well, and I was going to see her."

"I see. Did you know that it was wrong to take someone's car?"

"Yes, but I was desperate."

"Do you have a driving license?"

Odette shook her head.

"So that's taking a car and driving away. Driving without due care and attention. Driving without insurance. Driving without a license. That's a lot of charges young lady."

"I'm sorry. But I had to do something. What if she died without me being there?"

The policeman thought for a moment. "I think we should go back up to the school and talk to your Headmistress," he said. "Maybe she can help. And if the owner of the car doesn't press charges, we may be able to let you off with a caution in the circumstances."

Odette nodded, tears still trickling from her eyes,as the car pulled away for the drive back up the mountain.

Poor Odette - she didn't really get a great deal of support, did she?

Now is that the truth or was she heading off to commit some nefarious act like the bank robbing she did later?

Before the Chalet School

Odette sat in her bedroom staring blankly at the walls; everything had changed in such a short space of time. Only last week she had been so happy, she lived with her mother in a rambling old château, she had lessons every day from a governess and spent the rest of her time with her mother, the pair so close and nearer to being friends than mother and daughter. Then her governess, Mademoiselle Petitbon, was called home as her stepmother had died and her father needed her help. Then, instead of seeking another governess her mother had taken the advice of Madame de Bersac and decided that she, Odette, should be sent to school!

Odette sighed, being sent to a school where she knew no-one would be bad enough on its own – but she had managed to discover the real reason why her mother was sending her away.

It was completely unintentional, she had left her Mother and Madame de Bersac talking while she went down to the kitchen to help Cook with the afternoon tea. On her way back carrying a tray of cups she had paused outside the door while she attempted to balance the tray in one hand so she could open the door – but her hand had frozen when she heard Madame de Bersac speak,

“And you have no other relations, Madame Mercier?”

“None, my husband died during the War, as you know, and neither he nor I have any living siblings. I believe there are some second or third cousins on my husbands side but I have no way to contact them.”

“Then you really must think to Odette's future.”

“I know, I know,” Madame Mercier sighed, “I had thought that she and I could continue here – she is a quiet, shy girl and we love each others company...but...”

“But now you have seen the doctor you must make provision for her,” Madame de Bersac said firmly, “you don't know how long you will be able to keep going.”

“I know, I know,” Odette's mother said sadly, “I will do as you suggest.”

Odette gave another sigh, she had planned to tell her mother that she knew about her illness, had planned to do that that very day. Then her mother had said that Madame de Bersac had kindly offered to drive her into town – that she would be back before dark, so Odette had lost the opportunity. And since then...well....something had happened.

The very next day Odette was walking in the nearby field, her mind confused and barely concentrating on her surroundings. So when, suddenly, a man had appeared in front of her she had given a start,

“That's alright little miss,” the man said, his hands out from his sides in a conciliatory gesture, “I won't hurt you. I'm here to speak to a Madame Mercier – does she live near here?”

Odette stepped back, the man was dressed roughly, was unshaven and dirty, yet his speech was cultured, “Why do you wish to speak to Maman?”

“Maman?” The man laughed, “You're her daughter? Wait a minute,” he reached forward swiftly and caught Odette's arm, “yes, you're the right age, you even look a bit like me. I'm your Father.”

Odette struggled free and moved away from the man, “No, no, Papa was killed in the War, he was a hero of France.”

The man laughed, “No, the man you're thinking of is someone I met in a bar – I stole his papers, left him my own. I didn't know he was with the Resistance but when he was killed later that night it suited my purpose to be thought dead. Unfortunately though I wasn't so lucky a couple of years later and the Magistrates sentenced me to ten years in prison.”

“Prison?”

“That's right, but I'm home now and I'm going to be the man of the house – I'm due some luxury now. Your Mother will just have to put up with it.”

“No, no you can't,” Odette cried, “Maman is ill, very ill – a shock like this could kill her.”

The man shrugged, “Her problem, I mean to claim my rights.”

Odette shook her head; time and time again she had gone through what happened next, her pleading with the man, him laughing, intent on walking up to the château and delivering a shock to his wife that could, literally, end her life. Then, as if in a dream, she had found herself picking up a spade, swinging it round, hitting the man square on the head. Odette took a deep breath, the man had fallen into a ditch and Odette had run off. She had waited and waited for sounds of pursuit, or discovery, but heard nothing. Eventually she realised that no one would be looking for him, no one knew he was there. She had got away with it.

Thank you, ADs.
