Before

She couldn't resist running her hands down the sleek red body. A murmur of appreciation escaped her lips for the well shaped form beneath her hands. She let her hands slide over the curves, before they came to rest on the black leather of the seat. A Morgan 4/4, 1,122cc Coventry Climax engine with 34bhp and a 4 speed Meadows gearbox. Beautiful. She walked around the car, unable to stop her self from touching the gleaming metalwork around the grille and headlights.

She had long admired the 3 wheeled Morgan, but this was something else. Not only a good runabout, but a sporty number, made to be driven. Powerful with with a lightweight aluminium on wood body, it was designed for speed. Open top, two seater and ready to be raced. This was fresh from the factory, hardly used. Well it wouldn't be would it, with them having only gone into production this year. She had read the specs for this, heard about it, but this was the first time she had seen one and Nell Wilson was in love.

She couldn't see a driver. She was out for a hike that day and had come across the car in, of all places a country lane. She climbed onto a nearby wall, looking across the fields in all directions. No one. This was the North Country, and not exactly a well populated area. She knew there were no farms, no cottages and nothing apart from the most glorious scenery in the world to bring anyone there. Her attention returned to the car. It couldn't be abandoned, no one would leave such a prize for the taking. Would they?

But they had, there was no one around. Maybe the car had broken down. She looked again, the tyres were all in good order. Maybe...she let her eyes drift up and down the road, then hopped in and noticing the keys on the floor put them to good use. She sat listening to the engine, it purred beautifully. Putting her foot on the accelerator she revved the engine slightly. It responded exactly as she had hoped. Slightly confused she looked around again. No one had appeared on hearing the noise. She let in the clutch, put the car in gear and slowly moved it forward, then tested the brakes. They worked fine. Nothing seemed to be wrong.

She sat in the car, stationary at the side of the road. The feeling was wonderful, she couldn't stop her hands caressing the wheel. Then caution to the wind she started the engine once more. Slowly she pulled out onto the road. Changing up through the gears she increased the speed and drove to the top of the hill. With the fells before her she looked at the empty open road, and then let rip. The speed made her hair stream behind her in a chestnut wave, her cheeks took on the same colour as the wind hit them. This was glorious. For a few minutes she felt so alive.

A bend approached and she slowed, again changing through the gears. The gearbox and clutch responded smoothly. This car was a dream. She took a right hand turn, seeing how the car handled on a road that now twisted and turned downward. It held the road well, was light enough to steer easily and took the corners with no spin on the rear wheels. Another right turn and now she started to climb the hill again. She selected a low gear, but the engine withstood the strain of the steep hill well.

Maybe just as well, as she turned to climb the hill she passed a telephone box, and the man coming out of it in driving gear looked very confused. Nell giggled, lucky he hadn't been able to see her face. She reached the spot where she had found the car and parked it neatly at the side of the road once more. She grabbed her rucksack from the bush where she had left it and made to make a quick departure. The hill was steep and she knew she had time to disappear before the man made it back up, but then she turned back. She couldn't resist this.

There was a handy tree and Nell shimmied up it in a moment. There were not many leaves on the branches by now, but hopefully she would remain out of sight. The man came puffing back up the hill, and catching a glimpse of his car as he turned the corner slowed down. He walked over to it and looked inside. Shaking his head he walked round before putting his hand on the bonnet. He could feel that the engine was still warm, but could see no one. He looked over the walls, poked in the bushes, but fortunately for Nell did not look up. Then obviously baffled he got in the car, started the engine and drive off.

Nell jumped down. What an early Christmas present. It may not have lasted long, but they had been the most glorious twenty minutes of her life.

Go Nell! Pleased to see that she returned it, though - I was worried another character was about to be slandered!

Thankyou.

Not sure whether you'd call this slanderous ir not, chubbymonkey!!

After

Nell Wilson walked into Dingles, the great department store in Plymouth, with a degree of anticipation. Not just because she was meeting an old friend either. She hadn't seen Hilda since they had both retired from the Chalet School, and this meeting was long anticipated. The other reason for anticipating this meeting was that at last she was going to be able to do something about the lack of spice in her life. For most of her working life she had been at the school, from shortly after it was founded by the shores of the most beautiful lake in the Tyrol to the War years spent in England and finishing with running St Mildred's the Finishing Branch high in the Swiss Alps. What she most missed since her retirement was not the girls, nor the teaching, but the spate of accidents that had marked the years. Floods, avalanches, storms had come on a regular basis, and though there had been no real catastrophe she missed the added thrill they had given to her life. Now she was going to start something that would give that back to her, in the form of a small spray hidden in her bag. She made her way through the store, gay with Christmas decorations, past the signs for Santa's Grotto, to her destination.

Hilda was already there, sitting at a table for two in the store's restaurant, and pouring herself a cup of tea. Nell made her way to the servery, taking the small bottle from her bag as she went, and helped herself to a slice of cake, operating her spray as she took the plate from the display. Then, after collecting her own pot of tea, she walked across to join her friend. They were soon deep in conversation, but Nell kept an eye of the servery and noted the number of people taking cakes with a small smile. The strong emetic contained in the spray was very swift acting, even in the small doses that each cake had received, and she was confident that the effects would very soon show themselves.

"Is something the matter, Nell?" asked Hilda after a time. "You seem to have difficulty concentrating today. Old age getting to you at last?"

Nell grinned. "Not at all! Any more than it's getting to you, anyway. No, I'm expecting something to start happening fairly shortly, that's all. And before you ask, no, I'm not going to tell you. You wouldn't approve at all!"

Hilda raised her eyebrows, but said nothing more. She knew that it would be useless to try to get anything more out of her friend. At that moment a woman at a nearby table suddenly went pale, and rose to her feet very quickly, almost running from the room. Shortly afterwards the gentleman sitting opposite her did the same thing. Then someone else stood up, quickly followed by a general exodus, all heading in the same direction. Nell grinned but said nothing.

Some days later, she was involved with a fund-raising event at her church. This time it was the urn of boiling water that received her little concoction. The queue for the facilities was the longest ever seen, and then the shortest as those afflicted headed for the open air. It was this event which triggered an enquiry, rather than the restaurant. Nell thought discretion was the better part of valour and refrained from her little tricks for a while. However, the added excitement that they brought to her life finally got the better of her, and she developed a useful purgative mixture. While the immediate results were not as good, since it took some time to work, the thrill of managing to administer it without detection was the same. The outbreak made the local papers, in much the same way as the previous outbreak had, and caused Hilda to comment when next they met.

"There seems to be a lack of basic hygiene at one or two establishments in the region," she said as they settled down in a small cafe in Exeter one day. "I do hope that this place is better run."

"I'm sure it is," responded Nell, knowing that there was no chance of getting at any of the food or beverages served there.

Hilda looked at her friend with sudden intensity.

"Nell. Do you know anything about these outbreak?" she asked accusingly.

"Of course not," said Nell, hoping that this was one time that she would be able to pull the wool over Hilda's eyes. Her hope was, as usual, in vain, for Hilda possessed an almost inhuman ability to see through any prevarication.

"You are to stop this at once Nell," she said. "I know why you're doing it of course. Life is very pedestrian without all the mishaps and accidents to which we have grown accustomed. But this is not the way to deal with it."

Very glumly Nell agreed, wondering what she could do instead.

Can't understand why anyone would consider any of this slanderous - the Advent Drabblers are merely reporting facts.

Slight change of mood.

Hurrying as fast as they could the party from the Chalet School followed the passageway. Ahead were Maria Marani and Hilary Burn while Evvy, Cornelia and Jeanne de Cadoulec followed. Behind them came Joey Bettany helping young Lorenz Maico and, at the rear, Miss Wilson with Daisy Venables on her arm. They had been walking for what seemed like hours, in the dark, feeling their way along dank walls and through puddles of cold water. Escaping from that mob. Nell Wilson shook her head in disbelief, that this should happen – she knew some of the men, boys really, in that mob. Had seem them grow from cherubic babies into, what? She didn't like to think about just what they could be capable of. She urged the girls on, fear in her heart as to what might happen should they be caught. A slight noise behind her caused her to stop suddenly,

“Miss Wilson, is something wrong?”

Nell smiled, “Nothing wrong, Daisy-girl, just have to tie my shoe, you join Joey for a time, I'll catch up,” she watched as the twelve-year old did just that then turned back. She retraced her steps for about thirty yards, until she reached a slight bend then stopped – the noise, a sharp sound of metal on rock, was heard again and, at the same time, a guttural voice swearing. Before Nell could react a man appeared in front of her, a young man, barely eighteen, dressed in the normal attire of an Austrian townsman. His face brightened on seeing Nell,

“So, I am proved right, you did come this way, no, don't go, Fraulein, we want to speak to you,” as he spoke he reached forward and held Nell's arm in a cruel grip.

“Take your hands off me,” Nell said quietly, “you've got no right to...”

“I have the right,” the man said, “I am authorised by the Staatspolizei to detain all enemies of the state.”

“I'm no enemy of the state, I'm a school-mistress.”

“You are an enemy, Fraulein, you and all the girls with you. Come with me, I know this tunnel, there is a short cut. I'll contact my colleagues and they will be waiting for your girls.”

“No,” Nell attempted to resist but the boy was strong, “let me go!”

“Don't struggle, Fraulein, you don't want your girls to be hurt now, do you? I can give that order you know?”

“Let me go!” With a superhuman effort Nell swung the youth round and threw him away from her. The man lost his grip on her arm and staggered back a few paces before tripping over a small rock. He fell backwards to the floor, smacking his head on the wall with a dull thud. There was silence, Nell, breathing heavily, watched for him to rise but, when there was no movement she slowly moved toward him. There was a small amount of light from a lantern set high up on the wall, it was enough for Nell to see that the man would never rise again, his head lay at an unnatural angle, his eyes open and glazed.

Oh, that's chilling. Poor Nell. :( And so very plausible, too - she was absolutely hard enough and brave enough to do it if necessary.

I've been spending the morning reading these - which really is a very bad idea with the family (4 generations for the first time!) about to descend and a ton of stuff still to do. Thanks, ADs, I've had a lovely time reading them all, but this is my favourite. Hooray for Nell! :D :D
