Before

Matey. That was her preferred name. As pseudonyms go it was an appropriate enough one. She hadn't picked it herself, somehow it had been bestowed on her during her prison sentence. A decade had passed since then and although she had not been arrested since the nickname had stuck . Everyone knew her as Matey and people meeting her for the first time presumed it was a title, that she had medical training. This was not true.

Matey had never seen the inside of a hospital, well apart from the prison hospital where she had been on work duty several times. She had no first aid training and no idea what went on inside someone. It is doubtful she could have found a pulse on someone when she was first given the nickname. Finding it useful though she had managed to pick up a little here and there and was very resourceful. She could make you think she knew exactly what she was doing.

That was how she got away with things. She was confident. Confident enough to stop anyone arguing with her. Not that anyone had ever got away with doing so. In prison she appeared to most like an old lag. She seemed to know her way around the system and to cope without trying. It wasn't long before she had her own set up. She found ways of getting booze in, and quickly adopted some of the younger and more impressionable first timers. Her speciality was cover up, when they had hangovers making it seem as if they had colds or stomach upsets. They paid extra for that of course but very few of her customers were caught. That was how she landed the soubriquet Matey and how she landed the cushy job in the prison hospital.

When she was released she expanded her operations a little. Inside she had made some interesting contacts, now she put that to good use. She found a detached house with a small but very enclosed garden, making the house very secluded. She then set up a programme of 'rest cures' for her very wealthy clients who would pay through the nose for what they put up their nose. For the casual passer-by it appeared as if she provided a haven for stressed and over-wrought businessmen and society flappers. Well, she provided for them but it wasn't nursing, it was cocaine and a safe environment in which to take it. An environment which supplied not only the drug, but also a cover story.

She ran this establishment for ten years before being arrested in conjunction with it. On a charge that did not stick because it was false, that of prostitution. However she realised that the police knew something was happening at the house, just not quite what and decided to leave the country for a while. She had always fancied travelling and thought she would start with Austria.

After

Respected school Matron found guilty of malpractice

Gwynneth Lloyd, Matron at the Chalet School, a well-known girl's school, has been found guilty at the local magistrate's court of malpractice, and sentenced to two years in prison and a ban on ever working in any medical capacity again. The case has caused some degree of interest, involving as it did one of the former pupils of the school and her husband. Doctor Maynard is Head of the Gornetz Sanatorium, and a well-liked and respected member of the community. His wife Josephine is an author of predominantly children's books. Lloyd has been Matron at the school since it's early days when it was situated in the Austrian Tyrol. Her fall has shocked all who knew her.

"I would never have believed it of her," said Miss Annersley, the Headmistress of the school.

"I am profoundly shocked," declared Lady Russell, the school's Founder, and wife of the eminent TB specialist Sir James Russell.

Investigations have proved that over the last few months Lloyd studied anatomy and a particular surgical technique that was required to carry out her diabolical plan. She has admitted - quite brazenly - to practicing her technique on animals that she trapped. As she said herself at her trial, "I needed to be sure that I wouldn't make a mistake."

When she was certain she knew what she was doing, and that she could carry out the procedure quickly and efficiently, she struck. Inviting Dr Maynard to the school during half term, when staff and pupils were away on trips, she dosed his coffee, rendering him unconscious. Whilst thus deprived of his senses she made sure of his cooperation by administering an anaesthetic. Then making use of one of the dining room tables for her fell design, she performed the operation of which she was accused. As many readers will be aware, this particular procedure takes very little time to complete, and Dr Maynard woke naturally about an hour later, being for the moment none the wiser, though naturally feeling a little sore and tender. He was able to make his own way home where he investigated the site. The neat stitches told their own story, and the poor man immediately called the police.

Asked before sentencing why she did it Lloyd declared that her motive was strictly altruistic.

"I did it for Jo, for her Christmas present," she claimed. "Eleven children is enough; more than enough for any woman to bear. She was talking of having quads next, and that I couldn't allow to happen."

And there you have it readers. The Maynard family will remain at eleven.

Matey was very busy most evenings – oh not doing what you all thought she was doing, no, she was busy doing something for which she had wide acclaim, making jam. Matey's jam making would start when the fruits themselves were in season; she had tried many different fruits including strawberries, gooseberries, apples and blackberries. She would sometimes pick the fruit herself, other times she would prevail upon some of the girls from the Chalet School to bring her the fruit they gathered when on their rambles. None of the Staff objected – they knew that jars of the newly made jam would find themselves on the breakfast table for all to enjoy.

Matron prepared carefully; first she would ensure that her jars, pans, spoons and funnels were all sterilised prior to using them. She would use the kitchen in the evening after the domestic staff had finished their work and was always careful to clear up completely after herself. She would use mostly ripe fruit with a little that was not quite ripe so that more natural pectin would help the jam to set. Weighing out about five pounds of fruit she would crush it and simmer in a pan for about half an hour.

Next she would add caster sugar to the mix, approximately the same weight of sugar as fruit, making sure all the sugar had dissolved. Then increase the heat so the mixture would come to the boil. She would occasionally add powdered pectin to help the setting process. Just before the jam was reading she would stir in a couple of spoonfuls of her secret ingredient and remove any froth or scum from the surface of the jam. After turning off the heat and waiting for fifteen minutes Matey would then transfer the setting jam to the jars, five pounds of fruit was generally enough for six standard size jars. She would then cover the jars with some greaseproof paper and seal.

Oh Matey's jams was always well received by all and, try though they might, no one was ever able to make her reveal her 'secret ingredient' – 'after all,' she thought, 'it would not do for others to learn her secret and anyway, lysergic acid diethylamide was a real mouthful, she could never remember it.'

Thanks A.D.s - I'm a little worried that two of the stories contained Matron the Drug Baron: perhaps there is a grain of truth in them after all!

Damn, I wish my junior school had offered scholarships to the Chalet School; I'd have loved the French and German and I could have learned to make jam properly too. (SLOC is the jam/marmalade maker round here, must suggest that secret ingredient to him)
