During.

Miss Annersley looked up at the rather sharp knock on her door. This was the time she set aside each day for any of the girls to visit her if they had anything they wished to discuss, but they would normally knock quietly, not give rap loudly. She called out for the person to enter and watched as Mary-Lou Trelawny made her way over to stand in front of the desk. She was just about to ask Mary-Lou to sit when she noticed with a start that she was already beginning to.

“Mary-Lou. You seem to have mislaid your manners.”
“Oh I don't think so.”
“Don't you. This may be a time when you are free to come and speak to me, but that does not mean you can bang on doors, nor does it mean you may sit before I invite you to do so.”
Mary-Lou did not appear abashed, “Actually, for me I rather think it does. I think that there are going to be some special rules for me from now on.”

Miss Annersley let her deep grey eyes look into Mary-Lou's. She may never have needed glasses, but she could not read what was in the child's face. She decided that maybe she would be able to help more if she probed rather than admonished.

“I presume you think you have a good reason for that, but you must know by now that we treat all our girls the same. No one gets any favours, even Madame's children.”
“They are not me.” Mary-Lou appeared to be enjoying some private joke.
Miss Annersley spoke quietly and gravely, fearing for her pupil's sanity. “That is so Mary-Lou, but why do you think you merit special treatment that the others do not.”
Mary-Lou smiled. “I thought you would never ask. It's because I know something that they don't.”

Miss Annersley raised a questioning eyebrow.

Mary-Lou said nothing, she just slipped an envelope from her blazer packet and passed it to the head. “All copies of course, I have the negatives.”

Miss Annersely looked through the photographs, growing pale as she realised what they showed and when they were taken. She put them back in the envelope and returned them to Mary-Lou. There was no use burning them, she had no doubt that Mary-Lou spoke the truth when she said she had more. For a moment there was a thoughtful silence. Mary-Lou had no need to break it, she could wait.

Finally the head spoke, “What exactly is it you want. You are an intelligent girl, you must realise that I can only go so far.”
“From those photographs it looks as if you can go very far.”
Miss Annersley blanched. “I am sure we can come to some arrangement, but I cannot allow you to ride roughshod over the school.”
“Well let's see, you can start by making me head of my form. I think I can be head of form all the way through school more or less. Oh, and Auntie Joey was talking about someone the other day who was Head of Middle School. I think it is time we brought that back.”
“For you of course,” Miss Annersley said dryly.
“Of course.”
“That will be difficult, there is Vi Lucy to consider. She makes a fine form prefect.”
“I don't care. That is my first request.”
“You have others?”
“Yes, get used to the term, 'Oh it's not cheek, it's just Mary-Lou.' and make sure all your staff know it. I don't expect to be told off for any comment I may choose to pass. I will become Head Girl in due course, that is only to be expected”

“What will you do if I choose not to comply? Not to be blackmailed?”
“Let's not use that word, it is rather ugly. Let's just say that you are mentoring me. If you don't meet my requests then these photographs will find their way to Auntie Madge, possibly via the Sunday Tabloids, depending on how I feel.”

“I am sure there is no need for anything quite so drastic.”

“Only you can decide that.”

Mary Lou smirked as she walked to the door and left without making the customary curtsey.

Hilda Annersely sat at the desk with her head in hands. What had she unleashed on the school.

Post subject:  Re: Advent 12 - Mary Lou Trelawny

Mary Lou sat back in her chair and sighed; in her third year at Oxford and still enjoying it just as much. Oh there had been a steep learning curve when she first started – she'd had to learn quickly that a manner that was perfect for her school did not sit well at university. There had been a couple of rather nasty scenes with people in her first term or two before she discovered that other people could perfectly well manage their own lives and did not appreciate having a stranger interfere. At the same time, though, she had made some very good friends among those who appreciated Mary Lou's honesty and integrity. Her willingness to always be there if a friend needed her. Her sigh just now was not one of unhappiness, more one of some frustration that the essay, the last before the Christmas shutdown, was being so difficult and...

She stopped her musing as she heard a very timid knock on her door; there was only one person who was so polite and, sure enough, a very quiet voice called out,

“Mary Lou, are you there?”

Mary Lou immediately opened the door, “Phyllis? What's the matter?” There was reason for Mary Lou's question as her friend Phyllis Montgomery, had obviously been crying. Her make up, normally very tastefully applied, was smudged and her collar torn.

“He's tried again,” Phyllis said, her head down.

Mary Lou could feel herself starting to get angry, there was no need for her friend to say who she meant – 'he' could only refer to one person – one Anthony Harrison, the Honourable Anthony Harrison – though there was nothing honourable about his behaviour. Phyllis was a very sheltered girl, far more so than even Mary Lou had been, and she had absolutely no interest in Anthony Harrison. He, however, felt it his duty to keep trying to 'educate' her. A number of complaints had achieved nothing and so Mary Lou decided she was fully justified in her next actions.

A while later saw Harrison opening his door to a terrific hammering, he scowled,

“Oh, it's you,” he said on seeing Mary Lou, “sorry love, not interested – send your little friend over,” he tried to shut the door but found his way blocked by Mary Lou's foot.

“I'm not here to complain, Anthony,” Mary Lou said firmly, “nor am I here to threaten. I'm here to give you a present.”

“A present?”

“Yes,” Mary Lou shifted her balance slightly then lifted one knee, slamming it into the man's nether regions, “every time you upset or annoy one of my friends I'll be back with another.”

She left the man writhing on the floor and walked back to her room, 'Had she interfered too much? She didn't think so – good of Miss Burnett to include that move in her last gym lessons.'

Before (just!)

Mary-Lou Trelawney stood patiently beside Mother and Gran as they discussed where they would go for their needs. They had come in to Armiford on the early bus, and already Mary-Lou was bored. She looked the picture of a demure schoolgirl, with her hair neatly tied in two plaits, her brand-new school blazer worn over a simple cotton frock, and straw hat on her head, and gloves on her hands. She knew better than to fidget, for Gran always came down on that like a ton of bricks, so she stood quietly, suppressing her sighs. She looked around her and saw to her delight that one of the big blue police boxes was standing on the other side of Mother. She had an incurable need to know about things and had always wanted to see inside. She knew that anyone could use the phone to contact the police in an emergency, but that only the police had keys to get inside. She was therefore curious to see what was there. Carefully sidling around the two adults, she looked at the front of the box. The door was slightly ajar! Greatly daring, she pushed it a bit further open. It was dark inside and she could see nothing. Casting a quick look around, she slipped through the narrow gap she'd made and went inside. Lights came up as she entered, and she gasped in shock, for the inside was nothing like anything she had expected. For one thing, it was much much bigger! Far bigger than the outside. For another, there was a strange machine in the middle of the room, covered in knobs and dials, with a clear column rising up from the middle. To one side was another door, and she crept across to it, wondering where it led. She pushed it open a went through, and none too soon either, for the main door opened wide and two people came in.

"We must go now, Susan," said a man's voice.

"Yes Grandfather. It's important that we check things out. I'll take my coat off and come straight back."

Mary-Lou froze in horror as the door she had just come through opened and a girl a few years older than herself came through.

"Who are you?" she exclaimed. "What are you doing in the Tardis?"

"Tardis?" asked Mary-Lou.

"This is the Tardis. What are you doing here?"

"The door was open and I wanted to see inside. I'll go now if you want."

"It's too late, we've moved already."

"Susan! Who are you talking to," came the irritated voice from the other room.

"I've found a stowaway, Grandfather," said Susan, pushing Mary-Lou back into the other room.

"Well, young lady. What have you to say for yourself, hmm? Hmm?" said the man standing in front of her. He was old, with whote hair that came down to his collar - something Mary-Lou had never seen before. He wore a black frock-coat, a shirt with a wing collar, a floppy cravat and a yellow waistcoat. And he was looking very stern, just as Gran so often did. There was a funny noise coming from the thing in the middle of the room, and the column in the middle was moving up and down.

"I'm sorry. I just wanted to see inside," she said nervously.

"Well you've done more than that, young lady. And we can't take you back just yet. We've things we must do first."

"Mother and Gran will wonder where I am," she said, feeling more and more frightened.

"Don't worry about that," said Susan. "We can take you back to when you came in here. that's what the Tardis does you know, travel in time and space."

Mary-Lou just gaped at her, not understanding at all what she meant, but reassured that they could put things right.

Where are we going," she asked after a minute.

"Egypt," said the old man. "Ancient Egypt to be precise. And here we are." The noise died away, and Susan pointed to a funny-looking window high up on a wall.

"Look there," she said.

Mary-Lou could see a street of white-washed buildings baking under what was obviously a hot sun. People in odd-looking clothes were moving up and down, and she stared in fascination.

“we have to go outside for a little while,” said Susan. “Stay here and you can watch the people without being seen.

Once she was alone, Mary-Lou got tired of watching that one stretch of street, so she opened the door a crack. There was no one in sight at that moment so she slipped outside, leaving the door slightly open. Then she looked around her. It was very hot even though she was in the shade. Immediately opposite a door into one of the buildings was standing open, so she went across and peeped in. The place was sparsely furnished, with a table and a couple of chairs. Under the window was a long bench and over the bench was what looked like a small ornamental beetle hanging on the wall. Mary-Lou checked that no one was watching and crept in to look closer. It was beautifully enamelled and she was very tempted to take it. Before she let herself think about it properly she reached up and lifted it down. It was just small enough to fit into her pocket, so she stowed it away and raced back to the Tardis, getting inside only a few minutes before the other got back. Very soon after that they were back in Armiford, and Mary-Lou was able to rejoin Mother and Gran before they had even noticed she’d gone. But her interest in archaeology stemmed from that moment.

I love her at university! Pleased to see where her interest in archaeology comes from, as well, though I'd love to know what the TARDIS was doing in Armiford!

I love the self-defence lessons and so great to see Mary-Lou settling arguments physically again (was a bit boring once Phil Craven left and there weren't any more girl fights  ).
