It was a hot day and Jack was fed up. The summer holidays were proving boring. Most of her friends had gone to the seaside, but because of her dad's work they were going later this year. Anne, her elder sister always had her head in a book and Jack was left her own devices. At 10 this was hard. She mooched around the house, settling to nothing and complaining loudly of being bored. By lunchtime everyone in the house was tearing their hair out in frustration with her. Anne was not all surprised to hear her mother say at lunchtime,
“You two can both go out this afternoon, take your nets and go up to the stream, see if you can catch some tiddlers. The sunshine and fresh air will do you both good. Jack you need some exercise and Anne you've been frowsing in your room all morning you need the fresh air.”

There was no arguing, Anne might not like the idea, but she was a good girl. Not that good that she didn't slip her book into the picnic basket they were given though, and she 'accidently' forgot her net.
“It's ok, you can borrow mine,” Jack was, despite many faults generous.
“Don't bother. I have no intention of paddling, I'll sit on the bank and read.”

Anne settled down, quite the little lady with a rug, a picnic basket, cushion and her book all neatly arranged. Jack threw her shoes and socks off any old how and splashed into the stream. For a little while all was fine. Jack found a few tiddlers and put them in her bucket and then picked up some of the flatter stones and skimmed them expertly across the water. This was fine for five minutes, but the far bank was not actually that far and she didn't really have a good enough stretch of still water to skim on. This meant she soon bored of that activity and began to wander downstream. Anne raised her eyes, saw her dabbling at the water's edge as she meandered and was soon lost in the story again.

Jack meanwhile picked up a stick and dragged it in through the sandy earth at the side of the stream. She turned a corner and poked a few stones rather listlessly. It was still hot. She was still bored. A little further downstream was a building. She had never been down that way before and decided to explore. Reaching it, she pulled up on a stone and looked through the window. It was a garage, just beyond was a gate and entry to the road. The door was open and inside was a car that had obviously just been worked on. Jack called out a hello, but there was no answer. Wandering inside she had a look around. There was a toolbox on the workbench and an oily cloth. There was also a wheel with a tyre in shreds.

“Must have been changing the wheel”, Jack drew the obvious conclusion. She bent down for a closer look, imagining herself doing the job. Half in play she took the wheel brace and applied it to the nuts, turning each of them. She thought she was tightening them, but not really knowing what she was doing she actually loosed them. Finding this fun she wiped her hands on the rag and then feeling brave decided to look under the hood. There was lots of oil, lots of wires and lots of screws. Jack felt a thrill as she adjusted a few things, tightening and loosening things, straightening wires and generally playing.

“When I am grown up I'll own a garage,” she thought. “There is nothing to it and it's lovely to get messy like this.”

It was about twenty minutes after she had entered the garage that Jack began to feel thirsty and that drove her from her game, back up the stream towards Anne and the lemonade in the basket. She wiped her hands as best she could and although Anne exclaimed at the sight of them, she never noticed it was oil and not dirt. Maybe a pity as with her extra few years Anne would have realised that a car is not a plaything, not for children anyway.

Jack went home and dreamt of cars and engines. She never knew what her 'play' had caused. The fatal accident that night, caused by a mixture of faults with the car and put down at the inquest to poor repair.

Well! Poor the owner of the car, though in a way thank goodness that Jack never knew.

Thankyou.

For some reason I've always really disliked Jack - and this doesn't make me any fonder!

And it's all so feasible too - I can remember my kids when they were little "helping" with all sorts of things and us going round checking just what they'd done...

After

Jack Lambert stretched out her hand to answer the phone.

"Good morning, Lambert Scooters," she said.

"Buon giorno, Jack. Come sta?"

"Bellissimo, grazie. What can I do for you?"

"I wanted you to know that a new load was dispatched this morning, and should be with you in a few days."

"Grazie, Marcello. I will be ready for them."

Jack put the phone down and smiled to herself. She had a good business supplying Vespas and Lambrettos to the local Mods, and it had an added and lucrative side to it. The company that provided her with new models direct from Italy also had a sideline in second hand machines. These had been 'liberated' from the original owners, provided with false paperwork by the Mafia, and exported to England for sale. A nice profit for all concerned.

The business had started in a small way, with Jack taking a lease on a small garage and forecourt, where she displayed a number of scooters for sale. At this time they were genuine imports, with some local second hand machines as well. It was only after she had been in business some time that Marcello had come across from Italy for a chat. She quickly saw the mutual benefits, and became an eager partner in the scheme, much to Marcello's satisfaction. Far better than putting pressure on as he'd had to do with other clients. From that time onwards jack's business had thrived, and she had been able to open a bank account in Switzerland to take her profits. As she agreed with Marcello, better safe than sorry should anything go wrong.

And something quite drastic was about to go wrong.

The delivery of scooters arrived on time, and Jack personally checked the second hand ones, knowing that this would be where any problems might arise. Besides, she liked to keep her hand in and get out of the office from time to time. It was a week later that trouble erupted in a big way. She had just sold a top of the range scooter and was returning to her office when two police officers came into the show room.

"Excuse me, we're looking for a Mr Lambert," said one of them.

"There isn't a Mr Lambert here," said Jack. "Could I help you?"

"Perhaps we'd better step into the office, if you don't mind."

Jack led the way into the office and waited for the police to state their reasons for the visit.

"Would you tell me who is in charge here?" asked the other officer.

"At the moment, I am," said Jack cautiously.

"And you are?"

"Jacynth Lambert," she replied, seeing no help for it.

"So you own this business Miss Lambert?"

Jack nodded reluctantly, guessing what was coming.

"Then I am arresting you on the charge of receiving stolen goods, and selling said goods. Anything you say may be taken down and used in evidence. Please come with us."

Jack left the showroom between the two men, knowing that this was where her nest-egg came into its own. She would have something really good waiting for her when she was free.

Yes, apologies for this not being posted last night - but the snow and thunder caused a power cut in my village and I had no power/lighting/heating for about ten hours. :bawling: House slowly warming up again now though!

The Headmistress, Miss Annersley, looked across at the angry girl in front of her and shook her head, the tale did not get better with repetition,

“Have you anything to say, Jacynth?”

Jack Lambert winced both at the coldness of the voice and the use of her full name, “Didn't mean it,” she mumbled.

“You didn't mean it?” Miss Annersley repeated, “you mean you assaulted Jane Carew by accident?”

Jack shook her head, her dark eyes hard, “She woz doing my job,” she burst out, “'s my job to clean the car, not hers.”

Miss Annersley reflected that it was a good thing that she had managed to discover what had happened between Jack Lambert and Jane Carew. She planned to have some serious words with two of her staff, Nancy Wilmot and Kathie Ferrars, for attempting to keep this from her, for 'covering it up'. She also intended to reprimand her Head Girl and Len and Con Maynard for trying to explain the behaviour away as a minor misdemeanour and even blaming poor Jane for being assaulted. For now, though, there was one Jacynth Lambert to deal with, she took a deep breath,

“You have already been given one Head's Report this term, haven't you?”

There was no answer.

“Haven't you?” This time the tone caused the girl to jump and flush a deep red.

“Yes, Miss Annersley,” she said quickly.

“Then I have no choice, you are aware of the fact that you could have seriously hurt Jane, you have expressed no sorry for your attack, no remorse. This entire term you have been bullying and a thoroughly nasty little girl. Unfortunately you also have an extremely unhealthy influence over the rest of you class – girls who would, otherwise, be decent human beings. I'm sorry Jacynth, but I'm afraid I can no longer keep you here at the Chalet School.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that I am expelling you from this School,” Miss Annersley said solemnly.

“You can't do that!”

“Yes I can, Jacynth – I do not want your influence in this school a moment longer.”

“You can't do that,” Jack repeated loudly, “you can't you...you wait there, wait right there...I'll be back,” she turned and ran out of the Head's Office, slamming the door behind her. Miss Annersley sat in some surprise for a few seconds, then lifted the telephone to speak to Matey. After a moment though she replaced the receiver, curious as to just what Jacynth meant. A short time later she heard running footsteps and an even more dishevelled Jack Lambert reappeared, she ran up to the head's desk and triumphantly flung what appeared to be an old scrap book toward the Headmistress,

“There, that's why you can't expel me.”

Miss Annersley took the scrap book with a feeling of some dread, she opened it and saw a cutting from a magazine,

“That's a nineteen twenty-six Bentley,” Jack continued, “it has a 4 ½ litre, four cylinder engine, it won the Le Mans race.”

Hilda Annersley looked across at her pupil, “I know,” she said quietly, having a good idea where this conversation was heading.

“I wasn't interested in who all the people were standing round, until I read the caption saying that it was the first time the race had been won by a woman, a Miss Gladys Wallington – that's you, Miss Annersley, isn't it?”

Considering that the photograph showed her extremely clearly the Head just nodded. Jack Lambert smiled,

“Do you want Lady Russell to see this, Miss Annersley?”

The Head took a deep breath, “I think we can come to some arrangement,” she said.

Yes, please do something nasty to Jack. (And while I think of it, surely Jacynth is pronounced Jass...?)

No doubt it was the change of name that Hilda was more concerned about - will we learn what Miss Gladys Wallington had done to make that change necessary? [other than winning the Le Mans 24, of course  ]

Trust Jack to notice that sort of detail... hmm, wonder if we will find out about that name change.
