During.

Hilda Annersely surveyed her reflection in the mirror. As headmistress of the Chalet School her appearance had to reflect the dignity and status of her position. She normally wore a twin set, pleated skirt, and sensible low heeled shoes. A row of plain pearls or a tasteful broach, her seal ring and a wristwatch being the only jewellery. All this would be topped off with her MA gown and hood. She carried herself with a natural air of authority and looked every inch the Head Mistress.

That was how she usually looked.

This time however she looked rather different. The image she saw in the mirror was not the prim and proper headmistress. It was not the prim and proper anything. The four inch heels were higher than anything she had worn in a long time, but they gave the right effect. They were followed by stockings with a seam that ran right up the back of her still shapely calves. The brown skirt was cut in pleats to be sure, but was rather shorter than others in her wardrobe, being short enough to reveal the top of her stockings and edge of her suspender belt when she bent over.

It couldn't reveal any other item of clothing because there was no other item of clothing underneath it.

This ensemble was topped off with a white shirt, cut with low reveres and with darts beneath her cleavage. It was untucked and tight to her waist. Hilda smiled as she studied the effect and then grabbed a few other items, to wit a school tie and blazer and her MA gown before heading downstairs.

It was holiday time and she had Plas Howell to herself. She looked out of the window as she came down the stairs and saw a car pulling up outside the school. Pausing for a moment she watched the gentleman unload certain pieces of equipment. Her appointment had arrived. She descended the rest of the stairs and opened the door.

The shoot took place mainly outdoors, in the school grounds. Some shots showed her wearing the blazer and tie, others wearing her MA gown. The snow on the ground made a nice contrast against the black of her gown. Then more shots were taken in her study. At least one of those included her wearing only her MA gown!

When she received the photographs about a week later, she carefully placed a lipstick kiss on each one before mailing them out to a list of 'gentlemen' who had responded to a carefully worded advertisement to a PO Box and paid her several pounds each.

It was just a pity Hilda didn't know who was to get her hands on some of these photographs in a few years time.

:D Naughty Hilda, although it does sound like a good way to make money, at least for the short term.

Before

Margaret Pearson looked at the woman seated opposite her in the train, marvelling at how similar they were. Both about the same height, with golden-brown hair done in a bun at the neck. Similar features too, similar enough that they could be mistaken in a passport photograph. The only real difference was the colour of their eyes, Margaret's being a blue-grey colour that could change with her mood, and the other's a light hazel. They were both teachers too, though Margaret had certain other skills, skills such as forgery, that had brought her to this journey in an attempt to escape the consequences.

"So where are you going to teach?" she asked.

"The Chalet School, I hope" came the reply. “It's in the Austrian Tyrol, on the Tiernsee. But it all depends on the interview; I may not get it, of course. What about you? You say you teach too?"

"I'm going to a school in Paris as English mistress," Margaret replied glibly.

They got no further, for at that moment the brakes came on hard, and the train began rocking violently. Margaret threw herself onto the floor and rolled under the seat, while above her the other lady screamed and hung onto the arms of her seat. Then an especially violent rock flung the carriage over onto its side, and there was a sudden silence. Margaret found herself standing on the side of the carriage, with the other woman crumpled beside her. She was bumped and bruised, but the other was in a far worse case, and looked dead. Her bag was lying beside her, and Margaret made a swift decision and picked it up. When the rescuers arrived she was ready, and was hauled up through the broken window above her. Someone let themselves into the carriage and checked the other woman, shaking his head at the lack of pulse.

“This one’s beyond help I’m afraid. What a time to die, a week before Christmas. Were you travelling together. Miss....?”

“Annersley, Hilda Annersley. No, we had only met on the train. Is there any way to continue my journey? I have an interview for a post in a school abroad, and I really do not want to be late.”

Whoops, late again - but not as bad as yesterday's one. This time I was late because I got completely carried away with the story - decided to link in with the Jack Lambert one! Enjoy!

Just a few days before the end of the Christmas term Miss Annersley was standing and looking out at the mountain known as the Jungfrau, on her desk was a parcel. At the knock on the door she murmured a quiet 'Come in!'

“You asked to see me, Miss Annersley?” the words were polite enough but, as always, the Head could hear the insolence behind them, knew that, when she turned, she would see the knowing grin on Jack Lambert's face.

“I did,” Miss Annersley turned to look at the girl, Jack Lambert was now Head Girl, had been for one term, “sit down please. Would you like some water?

“Sure, what's this all about?”

Miss Annersley rose and walked over to where a jug and glasses sat on a sideboard, she poured out two glasses of water and placed one in front of the girl before sitting back down again, “I wish to discuss your recent request.”

“My request for funding to see me through university, you mean?”

“Yes, I will be retiring at the end of this school year, Jack – don't you think continuing to use your knowledge to blackmail me has gone far enough?”

“You'll still have a pension, won't you? You don't want Lady Russell to find out about your past, do you? I've got lots of plans for the future, you know, once I've got my degree in engineering I'm going to be opening a business – I'll want funding.”

Miss Annersley nodded to herself, “I see,” she said quietly, she paused for a time then added, “tell me, Jack, did it never occur to you to ask why I changed my name? Why I was so keen on Madge Russell never discovering my secret?”

Jack shrugged and drained her glass, “Not bothered, I just knew I was onto a good thing – am still onto a good thing – I mean suppose Miss Wilson gets to hear you're not who you say you are?”

“She won't hear,” Miss Annersley replied, “no one will - but don't think that means you can continue to use me, Jack. I will not permit it, no more.”

“How are you going to do that? I told you, my information goes straight to Lady Russell if you dare try anything.”

Miss Annersley smiled slightly though her eyes remained hard, “Gladys Wallington was a crook, a thief and cocaine addict. Less than a year after winning the Le Mans she stole a car and led the police of five counties on a chase that lasted nearly four hours. She was sentenced to three years in prison. During that time her cellmate, who was herself a teacher, helped her to stop taking drugs and introduced her to the Anglican church and to the love of teaching. On her release she changed her name and vowed to never again break the law. It was a vow I had kept – until today.”

“Very commendable,” Jack said with a smile, “now I know even more about you – there'll be records of you changing your name, won't there?”

“There were,” Miss Annersley replied, “they no longer exist. The records in Somerset House were really rather easy to access and I still have friends within the criminal fraternity.”

“What about prison records?”

“They will show that a Gladys Wallington served a three year sentence, yes.”

“Well then,” Jack said triumphantly.

“But there will be no link with me, Jack,” Miss Annersley said softly.

“Yes there will,” Jack replied, “that magazine I've got.”

Miss Annersley shook her head, she pushed the parcel across to Jack, “Open it, you'll find it is a copy of the reference book held in the British Library detailing the winners of the Le Mans, read the winners of the nineteen twenty-eight race,” she rose and gathered up the glasses and rinsed them in the sink, once she had returned to her chair Jack had finished reading in the book. She looked puzzled,

“It says the winners were Woolfe Barnato and Bernard Rubin, but it was you and Rubin.”

“Not according to the British Library. You've cost me rather a lot of money, Jack, but I was able to contact some friends of mine, also crooks, who made some pertinent changes.”

“You can't have changed everything,” Jack replied, “I'll get an investigation, look into all records.”

“No you won't, Jack,” Miss Annersley said softly, “because no one will believe you,” she reached into her desk and withdrew a small box, “I've been planning this all term, once I realised that even being Head Girl wasn't enough for you. Matron Lloyd was performing a routine check of drawers and discovered this,” she opened the box, “in case you don't recognise it, the substance inside is cocaine. Matey was able to identify it and reported it to me.”

Jack shook her head, “That's not mine,” she said, half in shock, “you planted it. You got it from some drug dealer and planted it.”

Miss Annersley inclined her head, “Quite true – but I will deny all knowledge of it. And when the Police get here they will have proof that you are the only one that has had contact with drugs.”

Jack stared for a time then her gaze spun round to the glasses on the drainer, “The water? You put something in the water?”

“Also true,” Miss Annersley replied, “but I believe the pertinent phrase here is 'prove it'. You are eighteen years old, Jack, and the drug laws in Switzerland are quite harsh – especially as the amount will be considered proof that you intended to sell it. I would think you'll be looking at a sentence of between two to four years – and of course you cannot expect to go to university now, or ever be able to start a business. Oh and, as a thought to take with you, I will officially expel you. I always felt Jose Helston would be a far better Head Girl.”

“It's all a lie, you're the crook, not me.”

“Yes,” Miss Annersley smiled, “but just who do you think they will believe?” There was a knock on the door and Miss Dene ushered in two members of the Swiss Police Force.
