During

Daisy was every inch the English schoolgirl, athletic, honest, a hard worker, and loyal. She was, what Tom Gay once called 'a gentleman.' She was now head girl of the Chalet School and was working hard towards her goal of studying medicine. This term had been hard, not only was it exam term, but there had been a great deal of disruption when several members of senior staff, including both heads were involved in a serious accident and a temporary head had been appointed. That had not worked out at all, and before half term the much disliked Miss Bubb had, well none of the pupils were sure, either walked out or been fired. Then there had been measles.

Now though the end of term was approaching, most exams had been sat, the school was prepared for the end of term fun and everyone was feeling happy again. Daisy herself was in a mellow mood, having come to terms with the two way pull of feeling sad at leaving school and yet excited about the new vistas opening up in front of her. She lay in one of the large school hammocks, enjoying the sun. Her lazy musings were rudely interrupted however when one of the middles ran over, and rather breathlessly said,
“Miss Wilson says please will you go to the study because she needs some help with the post because she fell over her crutch and spilt the coffee and Matey says she is to rest and I spread the post out to dry but I can't sort it cos I should be in gym but lost my hanky and...”
Daisy raised her eyebrows, “I am sure that was not quite the message Tom.”
“Well no, but it is what happened because I was there and I saw it. And she did say I was to ask you to and help her.”
“Well you run off, and please keep this to yourself. I am sure Miss Wilson would rather you didn't broadcast details of silly accidents all over the middle school,” she admonished, adding privately to her self, “Nor telling your peers how Matey sends the staff to rest.”

Daisy saw Tom run off and then headed over to the study. She knocked on the door and found Matey and Miss Wilson waiting for her inside.
“Ah, Daisy. Thank you for coming. I rather need some help with today's post. I had a little accident and although I have mopped up the results, I don't think I am going to be able to sort out the post and with Miss Dene being rather under the weather and all the staff teaching I need some help. Just sort the girls mail into forms and leave with the registers for the form mistress to deal with. Then you know the usual office piles don't you?”
“Yes Miss Wilson. I've helped with it several times this term.” Daisy looked at the piles, some a little coffee sodden and gave a business like nod.
“Good girl,” said Matey, “We'll be off and leave you to it then.”

Daisy quickly bent to the task. Most of the mail was letters for the girls and enquiries from prospective parents. She quickly sorted most of it and then turned her attention to the pile that had been doused in coffee and spread out to dry. One of these was a little thicker than the rest and as she went to pick it up she noticed it was marked private and for the attention of the head teacher. Normally she would have put this aside, letters marked private were not her province. However as she picked it up to place on Miss Wilson's desk the contents fell out of the still damp envelope. Realising they were certificates she picked them up, thinking to spread them out to stop further damage.

Daisy had every intention of telling Miss Wilson she had needed to do this, and no intention of reading the information on the certificates, but a name caught her eye. Mabel Bubb. How odd, why was someone sending Miss Bubb's birth certificate here. Even odder was not one marriage certificate but two.
“Peter Slater, wonder if he is related to Miss Slater in any way,” mused Daisy.

She knew it was wrong to read all the names, but once she had begun it didn't seem to make any difference. It all looked very confusing, there was a marriage certificate between Miss Bubb and a Tristram Denny as well, but surely that couldn't be Plato. Even so, she would have just left it all for Miss Wilson and confessed to reading it if it hadn't been for what she found next. There was a birth certificate. A baby girl with mother named as Mabel Slater nee Bubb and father Peter Slater. That was a mystery in itself, but the girl's name was Jacynth, quite an unusual name. Daisy had never come across a Jacynth until this term.

Never thinking it was any more than a co-incidence she spread out the final piece of paper, a letter. Although covered in coffee and still wet it was on good quality paper and typed and so had suffered less. It was from a solicitors and basically stated that following the death of her Aunt, these certificates had been found and seemed to relate to the young girl currently in their care, Jacynth Hardy, formerly known as Jacynth Slater. It was thought that the aunt was the sister of her father, but the case seemed to be rather confused and could the school or the girl herself cast any light on the matter. They would leave the matter with the school as they had just been employed to clear out the house and dispose of the contents, with any proceeds going to Jacynth.

Daisy thought it was clear. Miss Bubb was Jacynth's mother. How dreadful for the poor girl. She obviously didn't know and Daisy pitied any child, never mind one as sensitive as Jacynth who ended up in her care. She knew that the school governors, her aunts had decided to provide for Jacynth and ensure she had all the training she needed. Why should she be blighted by discovering secrets in her past. She was just beginning to blossom now, her friendship with Gay Lambert was helping them both. Daisy didn't think, she acted on impulse and ripped all the documents and the letter to pieces, shredding them beyond recovery and then shoved them into her pockets. She would bury them later in the grounds. Jacynth may have lost a few pounds as the enclosed cheque was also shredded, Daisy being unable to explain it any other way, but at least she would never know the truth about her mother.

Thank you for tying up the daughter loose end but I feel so bad about Daisy doing this (one of my favourite characters).

I was laughing until the serious end! I am pleased that she did it, though, I think Jacynth would be much happier not knowing that. Thanks for clearing it up!

Before

Daisy Venables was decidedly cross! They had arrived on Bribie Island a few days ago, staying in a small house part-owned by Nellie Rickards. They were going to spend the whole of the Christmas week here, and Daisy had been thrilled to learn that she could at last learn to surf, for the beach on the island had surf suitable for children to ride. The day before they had spent on the other side, where it was safe to swim, and they had had a wonderful time. Today they had come to the surfing beach to make enquiries about lessons for Daisy. The tall man in charge of the surf school looked at Daisy measuringly, then turned to her mother and Nellie.

“I’m sorry Ma’am. I know we cater for kids here, but Daisy is just too small. Next year, perhaps, when she’s grown a tad. Now, well she just wouldn’t have the strength.”

“I see. Thank you very much,” replied Margot. “Come along Daisy. We’ll find something else that’s fun instead.”

Daisy hid her feelings, not wishing to upset her mother and spoil the Christmas break. It was such a wonderful change from the plantation life that even this disappointment could be hidden. But it festered inside her, and Daisy decided that she would get her revenge before they went home.

The rest of the week sped past. Christmas Dinner on the beach was unusual, but much better than sweltering in the heat inland. All the Venables had a fantastic few days, bringing colour to their faces and the bloom of health to them all.

On the last night of their stay, Daisy crept out of the house after she’d been put to bed, but before it was completely dark, carrying the implement that she’d secreted away earlier that day. Then she headed for the surf beach, which was within reasonable walking distance even for her short legs. She was lucky, for she went and returned without any other member of the household being any the wiser.

The next morning they turned the radio on as usual while they ate breakfast. The main news was just ending, and the local news had a headline concerning the island.

“Mystery at the Surf School” said the announcer. “Last night an intruder broke into the store where the surf school’s boards are kept. Whoever it was had a hand axe, and carried out a concerted attack on the boards. Although little force was used, not one of the boards is fit for use today. Anyone who has any knowledge of this attack is asked to contact the police.”

All the tales detailed within the Advent Drabbles are completely true. I don't write fiction.

Going back to work had seemed to be a good idea at the time. She and Lawrie had discussed it once their youngest was old enough for school. Lawrie had been very supportive and encourage Daisy in her studying so that she could catch up – even though she had been out of circulation for only a few years she felt she needed to get herself up to scratch with all the latest treatments, drugs and theories. Her speciality was children's medicine and, recently, Jack Maynard had been looking for someone to head up the newly built paediatric ward and the San. This ward, consisting of eighteen beds, would incorporate the very latest designs, the most up-to-date methods. Daisy spent some time with Jack Maynard going through exactly what was needed and the staff required. A dedicated team of specialist nurses was recruited and Helen Graves, as Matron of the entire San, introduced the nurses to the community and saw that they were well settled. She also introduced Daisy as the Paediatrician in charge. Jack had appointed two more doctors to help Daisy to run the department having both of them on a six month contract with Daisy herself then having final say on whether or not the doctors would be offered a full contract. She had managed to meet one man – a newly qualified youngster with a great deal of enthusiasm and willingness to learn. The other doctor was due that morning and Daisy was waiting to meet him.

In the department the first of the sick children were just starting to arrive and the nurses were kept busy preparing beds and introducing the child and his or her parents to the facilities. Daisy sat in and watched as the doctor that had already arrived went through the procedure of fully admitting the patient. Making sure a full history was taken, a thorough examination carried out and the child and parents were fully informed. When he had finished Daisy had smiled, happy that she felt able to rely on this doctor and making a note to compliment him on his bedside manner – not all doctors were able to relates well to children. She hoped the other doctor was as good. The sound of the swing doors opening alerted Daisy to the fact that the second doctor had arrived. She rose from her seat and walked over, hand outstretched,

“Doctor Deeney? I'm Daisy Rosamon, welcome to the Gornetz Platz. Did you have a good trip?” Daisy's words of welcome faded as the man strode arrogantly past her and over to the Ward Sister,

“I'm Doctor Deeney, have one of your girls bring me a cup of tea, would you? Is Doctor Maynard about?”

Sister Lucas looked dumbstruck and it was some seconds before she was able to respond, “Doctor Maynard is out today,” she said coolly, “however Doctor Venables is here. I'm afraid you will have to make your own tea, Doctor, my staff are too busy taking care of our patients.”

The man scowled, “You do as you're told,” he snarled, “I'm second in command of this department and I'm as ambitious as Hell so if you want to keep that job of yours...”

“Doctor Deeney,” Daisy could feel her temper starting to rise but kept her voice calm, “you are being totally unreasonable and unprofessional. The nursing staff are here to look after the patients not pamper to the doctors.”

“Well that'll soon change,” the man shot back, “now, if you don't mind I'm busy - I've no time for any relationship and even if I did – you're a few years too old – so go away and stop bothering me, there's a love,” he went to step past her but Daisy stopped him,

“Who are you looking for, Doctor?”

The man smiled insolently, “The boss of the department, a Doctor M Venables, he's the only one that can tell me what to do, not a bunch of silly women.”

Daisy nodded, “I see, excuse me a minute,” she stepped away slightly and stopped a young nurse in the process of carrying a full glass bottle to the sluice room, “may I just borrow that a moment? Thank you.” She walked back to stand in front of Deeney, “I did think that letting Jack Maynard do all the interviews would be alright,” she said converstionally, “I mean he knew the type of qualifications I wanted for my staff, was astute enough to see if they knew their stuff. Unfortunately though, he had no way of checking as to their attitude towards women.”

“And your point is?”

“My point, Dr Deeney, is that my name is Daisy Rosamon – as I told you – but I practice under the name of Doctor M Venables – that's right, your boss.”

The man paled suddenly, “Dr Venables? I didn't know, I'm...”

“Sorry? Yes, I expect you are. It's not everyday that a man can be fired before he's even started the job, is it? But then it's not every day that I discover a man living in the Middle Ages.”

“Please, you can't...”

“Yes I can, Doctor,” Daisy replied, she looked down at the almost full bottle and smiled, “and I can also do this,” so saying she threw the bottle toward the man, the yellow, slightly pungent liquid flew out in an arc to land on the man's face and drip down his suit, she looked over at Sister Lucas, “sorry, I'm afraid someone will have to clean that up.”

Sister Lucas smiled, “I'll do it myself,” she said, “it was worth it to see that.”
