After.

Con Stewart sat in Australia and fumed.

Her fuming was hot enough to raise the temperature of the entire continent.

She was furious.

Why was she so angry?

Joey of course.

It was always Joey. When she taught it was Joey, and even now, all these years later it was still Joey.

This time it was a phone call. Raising money for the school again. Of course she would want to contribute. Of course she could find the money. Of course...of course...of course. Since she had regained contact with the school in recent years she had been inundated with requests for help, for the sale, for the chapels, for the library, for so many things. The school always seemed to be raising money.

She had worked there, yes, been employed by them for a few years what seemed like a lifetime ago. True, whilst she was there she built some good friendships, but as far as she was concerned that was as far as it went. She married and moved to the other side of the world. The war happened. Her family happened. Why would she obsess over a school she was never a pupil at, girls she taught, an employer? She had girls of her own and had never seen the need to seek out the Chalet school, to send her girls abroad for their education. There were schools it's equal in Australia, just as there had been in Singapore. Not that Joey ever believed that.

Her private opinion was Joey was not quite sane on the subject of the school. Sometimes the way she spoke reminded Con of some things she had read recently about cult members. The idea of the Chalet School as a cult was ludicrous, and yet....and yet there was something there she could not quite shake off. This should mean she felt compassion for Joey, and yet Joey had the knack of reducing her to plain fury with her casual expectations of donations, time, and anything else she saw fit to demand.

Con decided enough was enough. Saying no didn't work, ignoring it didn't work. They just came back. This time it needed something a little stronger. She thought for a long time and the glimmer of idea came to her, something that would get Joey and the school off her back for good. She sat down at her typewriter and began to type. When she had finished she wrote a cheque, and then her evil side kicked in, she crumpled it up, smoothed it out then pricked her finger on a needle and smudged a corner of it. Joey would get her cheque.

About three weeks later Joey was sat presiding over the family breakfast when Jack arrived with the post. He doled it out and sat down with his coffee. Joey eagerly took her bundle of letters and started regaling Jack and everyone else with details of people they had never met. It didn't matter, they weren't listening. Suddenly though they did realise she had gone silent and when Jack looked up she was biting her lip.

“It's from Jock Stewart, in Manley,” she whispered. “Con's dead. She was run over by a bus on the way to the post office to send us a cheque for the swimming pool fund. He's sent us the cheque, is that blood on it?”

Should I be worried that I guessed the outcome of that one before Con even started writing the letter...?

It'll take more than death to stop Joey, surely? She'll be asking Jock to set up the Con MacKenzie Memorial Scholarship!

During

Con Stewart rose early, and after a quick breakfast of rolls and coffee set off for the long walk down the mountain to Jenbach. She had a whole weekend free, and was making the most of it, booking herself into the Europe Hotel in Innsbruck for the night. It was the ideal opportunity to do some Christmas shopping before heading home for the holidays, and she was looking forward to it. It was still dark as she set off, but she had a powerful torch which showed her the way. It was a clear night, and bitterly cold, but Con was able to walk briskly due to her nailed boots and spiked walking stick, and so kept as warm as toast.

she checked into the hotel as soon as she arrived in Innsbruck, and changed out of her nailed boots into something more suitable for shopping. The windows were gay with Christmas decorations, and the streets rang with the sounds of the bells on the sleighs that ran up and down. She window-shopped for a while before making any purchases, but was soon loaded down with a number of packages. Returning to the hotel for her evening meal, she changed and descended to the Speisesaal. She was shown to a table near the windows, and was soon eagerly scanning the comprehensive menu, being on vaguely aware of another diner being seated at a neighbouring table. It was only when she had given her order and had leisure to look around her that she noticed the newcomer. Then she nearly fell out of her chair with shock. Though she had never met the lady herself she had heard enough descriptions to know who this must be. Frau Berlin! The size of her coupled with the loud tartan that had never graced any Scottish clan left no doubt about this. Con let her gaze rove around the room while she thought rapidly. There was nothing to link her to the school, which would certainly be a cause of conflagration. On the other hand, she was British, and from what she had heard that was reason enough for that lady to explode.

Her meal arrived and she thankfully busied herself with her food, ignoring her neighbour. In fact, it was not until the coffee stage that Frau Berlin realised that her neighbour was one of the hated race. Even then she was amazingly forbearing for her, merely muttering something uncomplimentary under her breath and stalking from the room. Con finished her coffee slowly to give the lady time to clear the foyer, then she made her own way out of the Speisesaal. She saw no more of her that day, as she spent the evening at the theatre. She rose early the following morning to go to Mass and by the time she had returned for her Fruhstuck most other diners had already eaten and left. Con checked out and caught the train for Jenbach thankful to have evaded any further encounters.

Leaving the station at Jenbach she made for the long path up the mountain to the Tiernsee. But before she had left the outskirts of the little town trouble struck.

"Englanderin," came the shouted epithet, and Con turned to see Frau Berlin standing only a few feet away from her, red in the face and furiously angry. "You belong to that verdammt school," she continued.

"yes, I do," replied Con, feeling she had to say something, but not wanting to escalate the encounter any more than it already was.

She could have saved her efforts, for with a roar Frau Berlin ran towards her, waving an umbrella in a menacing way. Con dodged to one side, and the woman swung round to attack again. In despair Con raised her walking stick to try to deflect the umbrella. Frau Berlin ran towards her again, and before Con knew it had run straight onto the end of her stick. The sharp spike sank into the front of Frau Berlin, there was a loud popping noise, like a balloon being burst, and she shot away into the night sky with a diminishing whistling noise. Con stared after her in stunned disbelief, shook herself, and set off back to the school, knowing that there was nothing she could do for Frau Berlin.

Thank you, thank you!

Mind you, Con would probably have been like me, have a fit if called English but perfectly willing to get in a scrap to defend the southern neighbours against all-comers!

It was as she was returning to her car that Con Stewart was nearly caught; the job had gone well, very well. The house was an expensive town house situated in possibly the richest part of Aberdeen. The family, owners of the nearby mines and factories, extremely wealthy and extremely conceited. They took every opportunity to flaunt that wealth and ensure that the rest of the town were aware that, in comparison, they were all paupers. Con had marked them out as possible victims more than six months ago,

'They could have given me a chance before this though,' she thought to herself, 'six months I've been waiting for the chance and it finally comes just days before Christmas.' She shivered as a piercingly cold wind whistled round her shoulders, then bent to the task at hand, namely that of retrieving a large sack from inside the room and then clambering back out onto the roof. The family were all over at the Town Hall, attending a function at which the main object seemed to be trying to show off the most wealth possible. Because of that the main jewellery and finest clothing would not be there – but then Con never went for the ostentatious anyway. The things she wanted were all the small items, easily disposed of, not easily recognisable. She had to stop quickly when, just as she was about to climb down the drainpipe, she heard voices and watched as two 'rozzers' slowly walked past. She could actually hear one of them suggest they return to the station for a 'cup o tea and a dram'.

Later, sitting in the only slightly warmer back office of her 'fence' she waited while the petty crook went over all the loot,

“Some nice pieces, Miss,” he said.

“You know me, I don't deal in rubbish.”

“No, and you always ensure that the items are not too hot for me – how long until they notice they are missing?”

“Probably a week or two, I left no signs.”

“Excellent,” the man handed over some coins and notes, added to them when Con looked disapproving, he took a deep breath, “might be worth your while to lie low for some time,” he observed.

“There still problems from that Jenkins place?” Con shook her head, she'd been lucky there – one of the children had woken, half seen her.

“Some, I had the police in here yesterday asking if I knew a woman thief.”

“What did you tell them?”

“That I didn't know no woman thief,” the man grinned, “'course I didn't add that I knew a gentlewoman thief, did I?”

Con smiled, “Maybe it's time to move on anyway,” she said, “I was thinking the continent. Central Europe.”

“I've got some contacts in Salzburg if you're interested?”

“Maybe, I'll let you know,” Con peeled off one of the notes, “here, Merry Christmas.”

“Thanks, most of that going to the Children's Home?”

“Yes, I'll keep a little, enough that I can show the family I've been paid for giving extra tuition in the evenings. Perhaps I should look at getting a full time job teaching? You never know, I might actually be good at it.”
