A noise in the night

Matron was reputed to always be the first to wake if anything was amiss in the school at night, and that was generally true. Prudence Dawbarn complained that she heard if a girl so much as put a toe on the floor in the middle of the night, while Barbara Chester once claimed that if you sniffed at the other end of the building, on another floor, with umpteen doors closed in between Matron would be there seconds later with her patent cold remedy.

In the middle of this particular night, Matey suddenly awoke and sat bolt upright in bed, her ears pricking for the slightest sound, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. Was that a sound from the roof? Surely since Jack Lambert and Gillie Garstin had had their little escapade it had been impossible for anyone to get out there? She listened even more intently. No, that sound was definitely coming from within the school.

Pushing her feet into her slippers and pulling on her dressing gown she left the room and started a tour of the school in search of the malefactor.

Unfortunately as soon as she thought she had located the source of the sound and got there, she heard it again somewhere else. She chased around the school until she realised she had visited all but two of the dormitories, so hearing a sound from Gentian, she made her way to Bluebell and waited.

Sure enough someone entered the room and went into a cubicle. With an exclamation of triumph she followed. “What do you think you’re doing here at this time of night?” she demanded as she swung the figure around to face her.

Suddenly confronted, not by a naughty middle as she had expected, but by a man who looked ageless, despite his wrinkles and snowy white beard, Matron’s mouth fell open in speechless disbelief. Her shocked eyes took in the red suit, the stocking full of presents hanging from the convenient hook in the curtain pole.

“Where else would I be on this night, Gwyneth?” he replied. “Now you know if you’re not asleep in bed I can’t visit you, so don’t you think you’d better get back there?”

Still without a word, Matron left and went back to her room, where she quickly fell asleep.

Waking the following morning, she was convinced it must have been a dream, but there was a stocking, hanging on the inside of her door. Curiously, she read the note attached.

Matron, surely you know that this is the one night in the year when you must ignore strange noises. Happy Christmas!
