I wrote some of this before, but some is new. I'm not sure how much you can post at once, so I'll divide it up.

“But why?” said Dan.

Lisa sniffed and cuddled closer to him. “Because he’s my dad and that’s what he does.”

“But it’s stupid,” said Dan.

“You’re telling me,” said Lisa.

Dan’s voice was unsteady.“Is there no chance he’ll change his mind?”

“Why should he?” said Lisa. “He never changed his mind about anything before.”

“But Switzerland!” said Dan. “It’s on the other bl**** side of the world.”

Lisa almost smiled. Dan never had been any good at geography. But then she blinked back more tears as she realised it might as well have been on the other side of the universe.

“At least if they’d sent you somewhere in England,” said Dan, “or Scotland, or Wales, or maybe even Ireland, I could have come to see you.”

“You don’t have enough money,” said Lisa.

“I’d get a job, then,” said Dan.

Lisa stroked his hair. “You’re only fourteen,” she reminded him gently.

“Well, I’d get an extra paper round, wouldn’t I?” said Dan. He sighed. “But Switzerland... At the... Shallow School?”

“The Chalet School,” said Lisa. “My mum went to there, and so did my aunt – my dad’s sister.”

Dan stared at her. “You never told me your mum lived in Switerland.”

“She didn’t,” said Lisa. “There used to be a branch in England.”

“Well, your mum didn’t get into university or nothing, did she?” said Dan. “So it can’t be a very good school. And your dad’s always going on about your grades...”

“Her grades were okay,” said Lisa. “She would have gone to the Sorbonne if she hadn’t married my dad.”

“The sore what? The sore bum?” Dan made a face. “Doesn’t sound so great to me.”

Lisa did smile then. “It’s a top university, Dan.”

“Well, it doesn’t sound like anywhere I’d want to go,” said Dan decisively. “So what are we going to do about this Switzerland rubbish, then?”

“I don’t think there’s anything we can do, really,” said Lisa. “Just – make the most of the time we’ve got.”

Dan thought about it. “Couldn’t you just not do any work and get expelled?”

“Then they’d probably send me to school in New Zealand,” said Lisa. She kissed him. “But you know I’d do it if I thought it would do any good.”

“I know you would,” said Dan. “But even if you could, well, you can’t mess up your chance to go to the Sore Bum just for me.”

“It is good for languages,” Lisa said unwillingly. “Well, my mum said they speak three languages a week. But I don’t care. I don’t want to talk any languages if I can’t talk them to you.”

“Well, how about I get a job in Switzerland?” said Dan. “Boys start work at fourteen in primitive countries. I’m sure I’ve read something about that.”

“Dan, I don’t think-“ Lisa broke off and looked at her watch. “I have to go soon. I have to try my new uniform on. It’s horrible. Really old-fashioned. And I’m not allowed to wear a bra until I’m sixteen. Can you imagine?”

“I’m imagining it right now,” said Dan. “Can I come and watch you try it on?”

“You know you can’t,” said Lisa. “And don’t say things like that. If my dad heard you, he’d never believe we weren’t having sex.”

“You’re dad’s mental,” said Dan. “We’re only fourteen. I’m sure it would be very nice and everything – well, kind of brilliant, actually, and I’d be lying if I said I’d never thought about it, and in some ways, it would be so completely worth the risk...”

Lisa wriggled away from him. “Dan! How can you think about that now?”

Dan came back down to earth again. “I wasn’t thinking about anything. It was just my hormones. Okay. Where were we?”

“Switzerland,” said Lisa. “Or rather, I will be.”

“Not if I can think of a plan,” said Dan. He hugged Lisa close. “Now, you’re supposed to be the brainy one of us two. You’re the one who’s in all the top sets. Hey. How about if I dress up as a teacher?”

“But your voice hasn’t broken yet,” Lisa reminded him. “You’d be better as a-“

“A what?” said Dan.

“Mary-Lou!”

“Christiane!”

“Wie geht’s?”

“Christiane!” scolded the girl called Mary-Lou. “It’s English day today – or have you forgotten?” Mary-Lou was very small with blonde hair and an appearance of delicacy, but she had clarion tones to wake the dead – or at least a sleep-walker.

“But Mary-Lou, it is not yet term,” said Christiane, nevertheless slipping into the desired language. “The rules have not yet started.”

“I know, but my aunt says it’s as well to get into the habit of using the rules right from the start,” Mary-Lou said severely. “Besides, you know you need all the practice you can get.

“Yes, that I know well,” Christiane sighed. She envied Mary-Lou’s easy fluency between the languages. Christiane was, or so it seemed to her, one of the few girls in the Chalet School whose mother hadn’t been a pupil there. But she was too excited about being back at school to be despondent for long. “So how, then, was your holiday?

“Mary-Lou!” A third girl joined them. “Guten Tag, Christiane. Have you reported to my mum yet?”

“Rebecca Richardson, you know you mustn’t call her that in term time,” said Mary-Lou.

“It’s not term time yet,” said Rebecca with a smile. She knew her Mary-Lou.

“I was thinking just that,” said Christiane, “but Mary-Lou, she say I must my English practise.”

Rebecca laughed. “Isn’t that just like our Mary-Lou?”

“I wonder whether there’ll be any new girls this term,” Mary-Lou said thoughtfully.

“But they take pupils not often during the Easter term,” said Christiane. “And we are nearly fifteen years. They take not many pupils of nearly fifteen.”

“But there are going to be some!” Rebecca was thrilled to know something before Mary-Lou. “Mum says there are going to be three new girls.”

Mary-Lou looked confused. “But Auntie Jo said nothing...”

Rebecca stopped smiling. “They haven’t told her yet. They don’t want to tell her until they’re sure she’s up to having parties. She’s not young you know, Mary-Lou.”

“But she’s Auntie Jo,” said Mary-Lou. “She is the Chalet School. I’m going to ask Auntie Len for permission to phone her as soon as we get to school.”

“She won’t let you,” said Rebecca. “And,” she added, not without a smile of satisfaction, “you’re not supposed to call her Auntie Len in term time.”

“So what are they like?” asked Mary-Lou, as though Rebecca hadn’t spoken. “Are they all for us? Are you sure your mum didn’t make a mistake?”

Rebecca sighed. “Look, I know my mum’s a bit of a mooner sometimes, and, speaking of which, I probably should go and help her with the new girls, but...”

“Auntie Con’s not so bad,” said Mary-Lou. “At least she can do her job. My mum can’t do anything. Auntie Mary-Lou has to do everything before her. It’s only really escort duty Auntie Con can’t do, and the mistresses are practically falling all over each other not to do that. But I actually think escort duty must be quite easy. It’s just a matter of organising people.”

“One of your greatest skills,” Rebecca murmured with more than a hint of sarcasm.

“Yes, that’s what Auntie Mary-Lou says,” Mary-Lou said happily. “So, what I suggest we do-“

“She comes!” Christiane grabbed Mary-Lou’s arm. “Mrs Richardson, she comes now.”

“Rebecca, there you are.” Con Richardson was relieved. She had volunteered to do escort duty in an effort to challenge herself, but had regretted it as soon as she had seen the crowds of girls. She’d been glad of Rebecca’s help – until she’d glanced up to find her daughter had vanished. “I thought you were with me. Oh, hello, Mary-Lou, Christiane.”

Mary-Lou and Christiane greeted their mistress politely, but their eyes strayed to the new girls on either side of her.
Mrs Richardson ushered the new girls forward. “Here are two of the new girls for your form – Lisa Allen and Daniella Groves. Lisa and Daniella, these are Mary-Lou Trevor, Christiane Henschel and my daughter, Rebecca.”

Mary-Lou looked them up and down. Lisa was attractive – small, with brown curls and a very nervous look in her eyes. Daniella was tall, with rather large shoulders, her arms hanging rather awkwardly by her sides. Mary-Lou thought she would probably be good at lacrosse. Mary-Lou herself, being small and slight, was not good at lacrosse, but she was sure she would make a great lacrosse captain.

“Welcome to the Chalet School,” said Mary-Lou formally.

“What, do you own the joint?” said Daniella.

In Mary-Lou’s opinion, she pretty much did own the school, but, as it was, she was too unfaniliar with the slang to be quite sure what Daniella was talking about. She carried on with her introduction. “I’m your form prefect, so I’ll look after you, and if you have any questions, you can ask me.”

She looked at each od them closely. Daniella went very red, and seemed to be trying to hide behind Lisa. Lisa muttered something that might have been: “It’s nice to meet you”.

“Shall we then go?” Christiane said into the silence that followed.

Lisa nodded with surprising eagerness for someone who was looking so terrified. “I’d like to get settled on the train.”

“Have you said goodbye to your parents?” said Mary-Lou.

Lisa nodded again.

“Daniella?”

Daniella didn’t appear to hear, but then Lisa gave her a sharp nudge. “What? Oh, right. Parents. No. They stayed at home. Couldn’t be bothered with all that rubbish. Can we get on the train now?”

“Yes, Daniella,” said Lisa. “Let’s get on the train.”

“I’ve got us a compartment,” said Mary-Lou. “I left my lacrosse stick in there. Do you play lacrosse, Daniella? You have the shoulders for it.”

“Oh, yes,” said Lisa. “Shoulders. Um, is this the door?”

“Yes, come in, both of you,” said Mary-Lou. “We don’t encourage mooning here – as Auntie Con knows!.”

Lisa looked absolutely appalled. “I wasn’t mooning.”

“Of course you weren’t,” Rebecca said quickly. She knew Mary-Lou hadn’t meant anything by it, but perhaps it wasn’t the kindest thing to say to a new girl. Lisa was nervous enough already.

“What did you say she was mooning for?” said Daniella. “You’re weird. Trust me, if she’d done something like that, I’d have noticed.”

Lisa said something to Daniella under her breath that sounded a bit rude to Mary-Lou.

They stepped onto the train. Christiane found herself behind one of the new girls. “Daniella, you have been to boarding school before?”

“No,” said Daniella. “And can we stop with this Daniella lark? It’s Dan, okay?”

“That’s not very feminine,” said Mary-Lou.

“Right,” said Dan. “I’m not very feminne as I reckon you’re going to find out very soon.”

Lisa stepped backwards onto his toe.

“Aaaargh! screamed Dan.

“Be careful,” Mary-Lou said imperiously from in front of them.

Dan grabbed Lisa’s arm and made her stop walking. “I can’t do this.”

“Of course you can,” said Lisa. “You’ve got this far.

Christiane looked at them both, worried. “There is a problem?”

“No. No problem,” said Lisa. “Is there, Daniella?”

Dan shook his head. “Well, my toe hurts from where someone trod on it, and this uniform makes me look like a-”

“I like the uniform,” cut in Lisa.

Christiane looked from one to the other, confused. “You have met before?”

Dan was preoccupied with adjusting his hated skirt. It looked great on Lisa, and not too bad on this Christiane bird, but on him... “Of course we’ve met-”

“We met when we got here,” Lisa said firmly. “Before we met you.”

They were interrupted by clarion tones. “I thought I told you not to moon! It’s just not done here.”

Dan’s fists clenched, but he said nothing. He just followed Lisa. Christiane followed him, wondering whether to be worried about the two strange new girls, or happy that it looked like being such an interesting term.

 That's so funny, thanks Michelle. I hope there's going to be lots more, because I'd love to read about Dan's time at the Chalet School. And I loved all the daughters of old girls and how they've got such striking family characteristics!
